THE MILITARY BUGLE DURING THE CIVIL WAR
Armies have used signaling instruments ever since there have been organized militaries. Trumpets and bugles
have always been utilized to relay important information and as a function in everyday military life. The calls,
sounded on predominantly brass horns, were crucial as they contained, with their musical notes, important
commands to troops preparing for battle and were essential for maneuvering bodies of soldiers on the battlefield.
Historical records tell of great battles heralded by trumpet blasts. As the American military came into existence,
English and French bugle calls were borrowed for use by the United States Army. Jari Villanueva will
demonstrate many of the calls and explain their usage during the Civil War. Villanueva, considered the foremost
authority on "Taps", will discuss the origin of the famous call, performance practices and the myths associated
with it.
The Modern Corno da Caccia
I am pleased to introduce this exciting new instrument to you. The modern corno da caccia is a hybrid innovative instrument
somewhere between a fugelhorn and a horn, and is played by trumpeters and horn players. I discovered the instrument in the 1980’s
with recordings of Ludwig Güttler playing baroque repertoire. Since 1988, I had been asked to perform on flugelhorn high horn parts of
Bach and Handel in the Louisville Bach Society. I love playing the flugelhorn, but in the extreme upper register, the flugel can be very
scary in terms of accuracy, much like waking a tightrope. The modern corno da caccia is sometimes called a piccolo horn, and it
allows players to explore the upper register of the horn timbre and to perform Bach and Handel as well as more obscure Baroque
repertoire that is currently neglected by modern horn players.
In the 1990’s, I discovered the incredible German Brass and the playing of Matthis Höfs. Höfs, in addition to performing
trumpet magnificently, played the corno da caccia in the group, and I fell in love with sound. The maker of his instrument, the Thein
Company of Bremen, Germany, has undertaken to develop and introduce a modernized version of the corno da caccia, which allows a
player to perform all types of repertoire with a superior sound and accuracy. I am proud to perform today on a Thein corno.
At this point in time, I have traveled far and wide playing this instrument, and have recorded 2 CD albums, a la Chasse, and
Out of the Forest, both on the Centaur label. And now I am embarking on a commissioning project to show the instrument’s
capabilities in modern repertoire.
Choices in the Undergraduate Brass Methods Course in Music Education: A Critical Look at Content and Materials
Among the most common university teaching responsibilities are (brass) pedagogical courses in the music education curriculum for
undergraduates. Faculty charged with teaching these classes may or may not have public school experience, and a wide variety of
perspectives are to be expected. Indeed, many different approaches typically result. One variable in these situations is a course text,
as the content and progression of a collegiate brass methods class is sometimes dependent on a particular source written to address a
variety of needs and accommodate numerous instruments. Conversely, method books used in the public school classrooms in which
graduating undergraduates will teach can approach objectives quite differently. While the two environments may not share all goals
and objectives, some relationship and reasonable amount of experience in the pedagogical materials for the young player would seem
to be a common expectation. This session will present a brief overview and comparison of a variety of method books written for use in
public schools, focusing on broader musical content and research-based approaches. Brief content analysis will be presented, with a
particular emphasis on approaches to melodic material (sound-to-symbol, for example), song selections and the historical relevance and
inclusion of folk and original source materials, as well as the use of solfege, differentiated rhythmic counting systems,
accompaniments, and improvisation. Select specific method book examples will be critically viewed and considered. Extant research
on specific method book(s) utilization by public school teachers will also be presented.
Francois Dauverne’s Collection de VI Solos pour la Trompette Chromatique: A Modern Performance Edition
François Georges Auguste Dauverné (1799-1874) was a considerably influential nineteenth century pedagogue and trumpeter. In 1833
he was appointed as the first trumpet instructor at the Paris Conservatory, where he remained for over thirty-five years. His students
included Jean-Baptiste Arban and Louis Saint-Jacome, both of whom became well-known in their own right for their contributions to
the development of the trumpet and the standardization of modern trumpet technique. As a performer, Dauverné held several posts,
including a prestigious position as first trumpeter with the Paris Opera Orchestra, for which he held for over thirty years. In 1827, he
performed a concert in Paris on an F trumpet with a newly-developed valve system, becoming the first individual to use valved trumpet
in a public setting (referred to as trompette modern or trompette chromatique).
It is for this instrument that Dauverné composed his Collection de VI Solos pour la Trompette Chromatique for solo trumpet and
chamber orchestra, which I have compiled in a modern edition for trumpet with piano reduction. This edition has been accepted for
production by Carl Fischer Music, and will be released in March of this year with accompanying recording, foreword, preface, and
biography. This edition takes on special importance for modern trumpeters for the following reasons:
• Dauverne’s position as the first trumpet instructor at the Paris Conservatory (teaching Arban and St. Jacome), and his importance
in the promotion of modern trumpet technique.
• Dauverne’s method book, Methode pour la Trompette, has been recently translated and includes the most comprehensive history
of the trumpet to that time (1857).
• A thorough biography of Dauverne has not been written, but it is my understanding that one is currently being done, which will
cause much interest in his music.
• There is very little music known by this very important pedagogue, composer, and performer, and no solo music has been
uncovered until this project.
Adding Dauverne’s solos to the body of available trumpet literature has been a very important and worthwhile endeavor, and I am
interested in presenting this music, for the first time in public, at this year’s ITG conference. I will discuss the aspects of these works
which define the idiom of chromatic trumpet music, and how these solos influenced other solo and chamber works for trumpet in
subsequent years. I propose to show the music, together with representatives from Carl Fischer Music, and also briefly discuss the
process of compiling and editing. I will address such questions as: 1) Why make the edition, 2) Why is a piano reduction important
(from original chamber ensemble), 3) What was the process of making the reduction, 4) How did I locate the music, and 5) What was
the process of publishing (acquiring a publisher, formatting, etc.). I believe this music will prove to be one of the most significant finds
for solo trumpet in recent years, due to the stature of the composer and quality of the music, and the presentation (together with
accompanying handouts and materials) will provide participants with an exciting view of a trumpet legend, his previously unknown
music, and the process of making the music into an edition that can be shared throughout the world.
Uncovering New Solo Trumpet Music from Minas Gerais, Brazil
Although academic research with regard to Brazilian music is becoming more intensive and productive each year, little is still known
about trumpet music produced in Minas Gerais and the composers residing there, and almost nothing has been written concerning
technical suggestions on the performance of these works. As a direct result of this deficiency, this presentation aims to reveal new
trumpet works written by composers from Minas Gerais, Brazil since the mid-19 th century, and to discuss the technical interpretation of
these works. The presentation will explain my research, which is being conducted in three main steps:
• A survey of materials by Minas Gerais composers of trumpet music
• A technical/analytical interpretation of two selected works
• A performance of the music being studied
Of the 17 works that I have uncovered to date, I will be presenting two specific works as representatives of the body of literature that is
being studied: Concerto No. 1 para Trompete e Banda Sinfonica, by Edmundo Villani Cortes (b. 1930), and Concerto para Trompete e
Orquestra, by Jose Felipe de Carvalho Torres (1912-2004). These works require advanced technical abilities and musical concepts, and
combines these requirements with Brazilian styles not normally part of the body of literature available to modern trumpeters. Specific
and unique music devices contained in these pieces include Brazilian popular musical concepts in rhythm and style, unusual intervallic
content, and distinctive sound concepts. Specific examples of this will be provided in the lecture.
The purpose of my presentation is: 1) to introduce works written for solo trumpet by Minas Gerais composers, 2) to further introduce
two specific compositions representative of quality Brazilian solo trumpet music, and 3) to provide a performer’s guide for these
works. In so doing, it is my hope that awareness will be raised about the existence and quality of this wonderful music. The
International Trumpet Guild Conference is an important venue to present a new discovery such as this, and is especially significant this
year because of the concert featuring Brazilian trumpet professors. It is my wish that this presentation coincide nicely with this event,
and serve to collectively represent the wonderful music and musicians from Brazil at the same venue.
Oral Anatomy of a Trumpet Player: Prediction of Physical Talent
In this study, the relationship of the oral anatomy to performance skills of trumpet players is examined. Seventy-one subjects were
recruited from trumpet students at 12 universities in the Midwestern United States. After being given a questionnaire, participants
played a series of exercises demonstrating selected performance skills on their instrument while being audio and video recorded. The
questionnaire was designed to ascertain musical and medical background of the participants, and includes questions pertaining to
practice routine, equipment used, placement of the mouthpiece, technical strengths and weaknesses, as well as history of allergies and
dental procedures. Performance skills were assessed via an audio and video recorded skills test that includes exercises demonstrating
tone production, flexibility, articulation, range, intonation, and endurance. MatLAB software was used to analyze the audio recordings
on characteristics such as frequency, harmonic content, and amplitude. During the second phase of data collection, oral anatomy
characteristics (dental structure, volume of airways, and facial figure−see figures for sample images) of participants were examined
using 3D cone-beam tomograms (three dimensional x-rays) and 3D photographs, taken by orthodontics specialists at a collaborating
School of Dentistry. Images obtained have provided craniofacial measures such as length, width, inclination, and crowding of the teeth;
volume of the oral and nasal cavity, sinuses, and pharynx; thickness and width of the lips; and distances across the face. Data collection
has recently been completed and this presentation will provide some initial results. Results focusing on relationships among the oral
anatomy measures, questionnaire items, and the performance skills test are planned.
Effects of Expertise on Intra-oral Air Pressure during Trumpet Playing
Playing trumpet is a physically demanding activity that involves generation of exceptionally high levels of intra-thoracic pressure.
High intra-thoracic pressure is associated with cardiovascular changes such as increased heart rate. Previous research has shown
distinct differences in cardiac responses of trumpet players as a function of expertise. The purpose of this study was to explore the
possibility that those differences might be accounted for by differences in intra-thoracic pressure (as indexed by intra-oral air pressure)
between the two groups. Four professional and six college student trumpet players played a standard series of exercises, the same eight
segments in two keys. The exercises ranged from a sequence of sustained tones to major scales and arpeggios, slurred and articulated.
Data collected were intra-oral air pressure, mouthpiece air pressure, and loudness. Intra-oral pressure was measured from a small
capillary tube placed in the corner of the mouth. Air pressure within the mouthpiece was measured by a tube connected to a specially
designed mouthpiece. Each tube was connected to a pressure transducer. Loudness was measured by a sound level meter placed
approximately 6 feet from the trumpeter. All three measures were collected using a Vernier Labpro with Logger Pro software. All data
were recorded at a rate of 10 samples per second. Total playing time was about 24 minutes; each of the 16 exercises took exactly 1
minute and there were 30 second breaks between exercises. Precise timing was maintained by use of a metronome. The resulting data
was summarized at the individual level by computing baseline pressure values and obtaining difference scores between baseline and
segments when the participant was playing. Medians and interquartile ranges were used to control for the non-normality of the
distributions. An additional measure of intra-oral pressure was derived by regressing intra-oral pressure on loudness and computing the
residuals. Analysis of intra-oral air pressure and pressure corrected for loudness showed: (a) intra-oral air pressure increases with
pitch; (b) higher pressures are associated with articulated as contrasted with slurred exercises; (c) the effect of articulation is more
pronounced at higher pitches. Professionals maintained lower intra-oral air pressure than students for slurred exercises especially for
higher pitches. These results suggest that professionals are more efficient in use of air which in turn may contribute to the lower
cardiovascular reactivity found in previous research.
