his integrated multimedia program has been carefully developed
to meet the needs and learning styles of Science 14 and
Science 24 students. It helps students fulfill each of the Alberta
Learning outcomes by featuring many visuals, hands-on activities, and a
simplified reading level that makes the material accessible to students
who have difficulty with mainstream courses.
Features
Internet Connect activities guide students to the Internet, where they
can download worksheets and visit web links that help them
understand specific issues or content.
Both the Internet Connect and Disc Connect features help students
meet many of the province’s ICT outcomes.
Student Multimedia CD-ROM
Multimedia applets (referred to as Disc Connects) handle concepts
that are difficult to teach using a print resource.
The applets use interactive features such as drag and drop, lab
simulations, tutorials, and question and answer format. The combined
animations and videos bring concepts to life.
Teacher Support Material
The Teacher’s Resource CD-ROM includes science background for
most text sections and activities, answers to all text questions, extension
activities, blackline masters, ICT masters that guide students through
the Internet Connect and Disc Connect activities, and assessment
masters.
Biology is an authoritative majors textbook focusing on
evolution as a unifying theme. In revising the text, McGraw-
Hill consulted with numerous users, noted experts and professors in the
field. Biology is distinguished from other texts by its strong emphasis on
natural selection and the evolutionary process that explains biodiversity.
The new 8th edition continues that tradition and advances into modern
biology by featuring the latest in cutting edge content reflective of the
rapid advances in biology. That same modern perspective was brought
into the completely new art program offering readers a dynamic, realistic,
and accurate, visual program.
New to this edition
Dynamic Author Team—This new team is comprised of Jonathan
Losos, Evolutionary Biologist—Harvard University, Ken Mason,
Molecular Biologist—Purdue University, and Susan Singer, Plant
Geneticist—Carleton College, have joined forces to thoroughly revise
the textbook. The new author team successfully modernized the
content, while maintaining the historical context to the subject matter.
Entirely NEW Visual Program! The entire art program was
redone involving a variety of specialists, artists, and medical illustrators
who worked very closely with the author team to provide a phenomenal
Biology combines the talent of four active researchers and
experienced textbook authors to create a comprehensive
modern text featuring an evolutionary focus with an emphasis on
scientific inquiry. Four active researchers, four experienced text authors,
comprehensive and modern approach, evolutionary focus, emphasizes
scientific inquiry, realistic, integrated (3-D) visual program
Features
Evolution—A strong evolutionary approach. It delivers a clear theme
of evolution through natural selection through out each chapter by
use of genomes and proteomes.
Content—Top notch and break through content provides the most
accurate and up-to-date reference book on the market.
Investigative Approach—The author team guides the reader
through how the investigation of living things leads to discoveries
that no one would have imagined. This is emphasized in the Feature
Investigation boxes throughout the text. Each Feature Investigation
highlights important experiments in the various fields of biology and
the relevance to the discoveries.
Art—Instructive visuals. The student can understand what is going
on in the figures/photos without necessarily reading the narrative.
Visual learners will especially benefit from the clear and concise
art/photos. Brand new art, all consistent!
Integrated Scientific method—You get the traditional TOC, but the
benefit of integrated feature investigations throughout the narrative.
Balanced pedagogy—Everything in the book is important and the
student is not overwhelmed by lots of pedagogy.
applies chapter material to a real-life situation.
Inquiry into Life has four types of boxed readings.
Health Focus readings review procedures and technology that can
contribute to our well-being.
Science Focus readings describe how experimentation and
observations have contributed to our knowledge about the living world.
Ecology Focus readings show how the concepts of the chapter
can be applied to ecological concerns.
Bioethical Focus readings describe modern situations that call for
value judgements and challenge students to develop a point of view.
Digital Content Manager CD-ROM contains 60 pieces of active
Physics
• Jacobs, Schulman • © 2005
PHYSICS
College Physics was developed from the notes and experiences
of authors sitting next to students in study labs explaining
physical principles on a daily basis. Students were able to grasp principles
much more easily, completely, and remember those principles when
discussed within the context of something students were familiar with.
The “Conceptual Framework” approach was developed and all physics
concepts are presented to students in such a fashion. Every example
includes strategy, solution, discussion, and practice problems (with
answers at the end of chapter).
New to this edition!
Revisions to Problem Sets: more variety added to the end of chapter
problem sets.
Review and Synthesis: A completely new set of problems and
exercises has been added. Eight reviews and Synthesis sections now
appear throughout the text, following groups of related chapters.
overview of environmental geology. It looks both at how the
earth developed into its present condition and where matters seem to
be moving for the future. It is hoped that this knowledge will provide
the student with a useful foundation for discussing and evaluating
specific environmental issues, as well as for developing ideas about
how the problems should be solved.
Teen Health Modules
Courses 1, 2, 3
• Grades 6-9
Course 2 Modules
Abstinence
This module is designed to help students take a close look at their
choices and decisions they make in their relationships and to recognize
the value of practicing abstinence from sexual activity before marriage.
Tobacco, Alcohol, and Other Drugs
This module describes the direct effects of substance abuse on a
person's physical, mental/emotional, and social health. It describes
skill-building activities that give students the motivation and techniques
for implementing a drug-free lifestyle. Refusal skills, communication
techniques, and responsible behaviour come alive in activities, roleplaying
scenarios, and interviews with experts.
Safety and Injury Prevention
The booklet opens with a lesson on safety habits and the foundations
of risk-taking among teens. It then moves on to an examination of
safety in the home, at school, on the road, during leisure activities, in
the face of natural disasters, and to ward off physical threats. The final
lesson outlines key first-aid procedures, including rescue breathing,
CPR, and first aid for choking.
Course 3 Modules
HIV / AIDS
In this module, students are given a clear understanding of the nature
of the disease, its causes, its prognosis, how it can be prevented,
and what is currently being done to find a cure and/or vaccine.
Violence Prevention
From this module, students acquire information on violence in
schools, guns and gangs, and the difference between conflict and
violence. Students are presented with strategies they can use to
help diffuse a potentially violent situation.
Healthy Relationships and Sexuality
Designed to help students take a close look at the choices and
decisions they make in their relationships, this module provides basic
