EDITORIAL

This second issue of the TREND newsletter has been much delayed, due to the tragic sudden loss of

Fabio Neri, the man who conceived the TREND project and coordinated the proposal submission and

the NoE activities until his death. Fabio passed away in the early afternoon of Saturday April 16, during

a mountaineering trip, probably because of a heart attack. His death left all of us shocked and

speechless, and it took some time to recover and get back to work, always with sadness in our hearts.

The TREND team at Politecnico di Torino will do its best to continue the project management, trying

to follow Fabio’s steps. He surely deserves our commitment.

TREND Plenary Meeting in Paris

France Telecom hosted the second plenary meeting at Orange

Labs premises in Paris on 1-2 March 2011. The agenda included

a general project presentation and discussions on WPs activities

plans. Three Collaborating Institutions were introduced:

Politecnico di Milano, Università La Sapienza di Roma and

Fondazione Ugo Bordoni. Michele Albano (IT) presented the

C2POWER project.

TREND at INFOCOM 2011

TREND co-organized the Workshop on Green Communications and Networking at IEEE INFOCOM

2011, April 10-15, 2011 in Shanghai, China.

General Co-Chair: Marco Ajmone Marsan.

TPC Co-Chair for Green Wired Communications and Networking Track: Yabin Ye.

Several TREND partners were members of the Technical Program Committee.

TREND at IEEE WCNC 2011

Prof. Marco Ajmone Marsan (PoliTO) organized a Panel on "Wireless Green Networking" at IEEE

WCNC on March 28-31 2011 in Cancun, Mexico. The panel focused on the main issues and challenges

in the area of wireless green networking, with the contribution of academic and industrial researchers

from the US, Europe, and China. Mario Pickavet of IBBT was one of the panelists.

PhD Course on "Energy-Efficient Wireless Networking"

In April 2011, Prof. Izhak Rubin (University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA)), an IEEE Life

Fellow, has held a five-days course on energy-efficient wireless networks at Politecnico di Torino.

The teaching material of the course is available on the project website.

PhD Course on "Green ICT"

In March 2011, Michela Meo (PoliTO) held a 10 hour course for PhD students at the Hellenic International

University in Thessaloniki, Greece. The course covered most of the main issues related to

this topic, from economical motivation to the design of energy efficient technologies, to solutions and

open problems in wireless and wired networks.

TREND Special Issue on "Energy-Efficient Networking" for IEEE Internet

Computing.

The proposal for a special issue of the IEEE Internet Computing magazine on energy-efficient networking

has been submitted by Alberto Conte (A-LBLF) and Michela Meo (PoliTO).

TREND in EC Concertation Meetings

The TREND NoE has been presented by Prof. Fabio Neri at the 7th Future Networks Concertation

Meetings in Brussels in February 2011. There were interactions with the project leaders of several

other projects, including those specifically focused on energy-efficient networking (EARTH,

C2POWER, ECONET). There is an agreement on some integration actions across these projects.

Collaborating Institutions

Applications for the role of Collaborating Institutions (CIs), participating in TREND with no budget

allocation, were collected. Two CIs, namely University of Rome and Politecnico di Milano, already

formally accepted to participate in TREND as CI at the Plenary Meeting that was held in Paris on

March 1-2, 2011. During the meeting, the CIs presented their ongoing research activities, proposed

possible contributions to the WPs and discussed possible joint activities with other partners, as well

as the best means for effective collaboration.

TREND and Politecnico di Torino (PoliTO)

The Telecommunication Networks Group is part of the Electronic Engineering

Department at Politecnico di Torino (TNG - http://

www.telematica.polito.it/) and participates in the TREND NoE with the

expertise of wired and wireless networking, switching architectures, optical

technologies, and Internet Measurements. PoliTO provides the project

management and participates in technical activities related with energy

efficient wired and wireless networks, and switching architectures.
