<strong>spotlight</strong> on
Throughout 2009/10 the College supported many good causes
and raised thousands of pounds for charity. Below are just some
of the highlights from the year.
6. College donates printers to Malawi
Last year the College decided to donate some of its older
computers which were coming out of service to Fisherman's Rest,
a charity operating in Malawi. Once in Malawi, local school children
helped build a classroom to house the computers and solar panels
were installed to run them. For many it was the first time they had
seen a computer.
7. Students help orphanage in Madagascar
A group of ten students from Pembrokeshire College undertook a
month long expedition to Madagascar. During their trip the group
helped a local orphanage to construct a nature trail through
woodland to help the children gain a better understanding of their
natural environment, and encourage them to preserve the flora
and fauna that the island is famed for. The students made huge
strides in developing their range of skills including team-building
and communication, but most importantly their confidence.

8. Cancer charity benefited from hair-raising experience
Male staff at the College went through the agony of hair-waxing to
raise funds for breast cancer research.
Touched by the plight of colleagues who have experienced the
trauma of being diagnosed and treated for cancer, a hair waxing
session was set up for male members of staff, who volunteered to
provide foundation year beauty therapists with hands-on experience
- and in doing so, found themselves relieved of the hair on
their backs, chest, legs and face. A total of £1,100 was raised for
breast cancer research projects.

9. Students ‘wake up and smell the coffee’ for charity
Staff and students across College took part in The World’s Biggest
Coffee Morning, the UK’s third biggest fundraising event. With the
perfect excuse to indulge, College hospitality and catering
students baked delicious cakes and biscuits whilst college caterers
Chartwells donated free cups, milk and sugar and Preseli Coffee
donated coffee beans.
