2013 Annual Awards Celebration
A signature event of the Hillsboro Chamber of Commerce

Emma C. Mckinney Distinguished Citizen Award
Since moving to Hillsboro
over 25 years ago, Debbie
Clark has been actively
involved in the community,
devoting both time and
energy to programs and
organizations she is passionate
about. “Hillsboro is blessed
to have someone so dedicated
to the public good and so
effective in securing funding,
positive votes and goodwill
for the city, its library, the arts
and the medical community,”
noted former library director
Debra Brodie.
In 1997, Clark began her
first of two four-year terms on
the Hillsboro Library Board,
for six of those eight years, she
was the Board Chairman. When her terms on the
Library Board concluded in 2005, Debbie put on a
different hat as a director on the Board of the Library
Foundation of Hillsboro. The next year, she rejoined
the Hillsboro Library Board and currently is again its
Chairman, while she continues to serve on the Library
Foundation Board as both its President and its Capital
Campaign Director. It was she who orchestrated
and led the $1 million capital campaign for the new
Main Library building on Brookwood Parkway that
opened in 2007. Currently, she is focused on yet
another capital campaign, to finish the second floor
Debbie Clark
of the Main Library and to
completely remodel the Shute
Park Branch Library.
She is also on the Board
of the Tuality Healthcare
Foundation, and was Chair
of the Foundation’s Capital
campaign to raise 1,000,000+
for new digital mammography
equipment and renovation of
the breast health center.
On top of that, her civic
engagement goes well beyond
fundraising. She has or
continues to serve on the boards
or committees of the following:
Oregon Medical Association
Alliance, Ronald McDonald
House Charities of Oregon,
Hillsboro Arts and Culture
Council (to establish an arts endowment fund for
Hillsboro), Hillsboro Downtown Advisory Committee
and the Oregon Medical Education Foundation
(providing grants and scholarships for health-related
projects and careers.) She has also worked to bring the
Portland Chamber Orchestra to Hillsboro and has
been actively involved in Hillsboro schools.
A 2011 article in the Hillsboro Argus said Debbie
has “written her own chapter in Hillsboro’s service to
mankind history annals.”
Debbie and her husband Dr. Edward Clarke have
three children and several grandchildren.
Noelani “Nui” Gonzales is currently ASB President at Glencoe High
School (past ASB Vice President and historian), taken a rigorous course load
and is on track to graduate valedictorian. In addition, she is President of her
school’s Key Club, member of the National Honor Society, won the Youth Merit
Award from the Rotary Club and is Historian of the Hillsboro Youth Advisory
Council through the City of Hillsboro.
Says school counselor Brooke Nova: “Noelani is one of the most schoolinvolved
students that I have ever met. She’s a Renaissance woman; with
accomplishments ranging from her independent photography business, a varsity
athlete in several sports and has won awards for her vocal abilities.” From Track
and Field and Lacrosse, to choreographing the main dance numbers for the Mr.
Glencoe school competition, she is actively involved in her school.
In addition, she has donated countless hours to the community. She was
one of four finalists selected from the state for the 2012 Prudential Spirit of
Community Award for her raising $3000 making and selling t-shirts for “Hope
for Japan,” to benefit earthquake and tsunami victims. Her efforts have also
supported the March of Dimes, Doernbecher Children’s Hospital and Ronald
Noelani Gonzales
McDonald House to name a few, and she was student coordinator for the
school’s Canned Food Drive. She even raised $1000 through the Sparrow Club
to help raise funds for a fellow classmate’s kidney transplant.
Noelani plans to attend the University of Oregon in the fall, with a double major in Nutrition and Communications
receiving the Summit Scholarship and Journalism Program Scholarship from the school as well as a scholarship from the
Elks Club. She aspires to one day be Communications Director for a health Organization. Nui wishes to thank her parents
for recognizing her true potential and always pushing her to work hard and never settle for less.
First Responder award
The Chamber is pleased to present Ben Roby from the Hillsboro
Fire Department with the first annual First Responder’s Award. Originally
from Redland, Washington, Roby was transferred to Hillsboro through his
previous employer, Intel. With a background in fire science, Ben decided
to change careers and pursue his calling. He joined the fire department in
April, 2004.
Through hard work and tenacity, Ben was promoted to Engineer
in 2010 and has headed the EMS Operations Committee for the last two
years, helping to guide the department’s EMS system towards a place of
prominence, priority and excellence within the organization. He was recently
selected by his peers to receive the 2012 Firefighter of the Year award.
“Ben’s performance as an EMT-Paramedic is top-notch. His
aggressive but reasonable approach to each situation is a model for EMT-P’s
across our organization and beyond. His skill set simply makes those who
work with him better in every facet of the job,” said Chief Greg Nelson.
In addition to firefighting duties, Ben serves as a member of the
Apparatus Committee and was a key part of the team that designed and
Ben Roby
assembled the department’s latest brush rig, BR2. Through many hours of
on and off duty work, Ben and several others were able to create a great
looking, practical and well-equipped piece of apparatus that will serve the community well for many years.
“Ben Roby consistently demonstrates all of the qualities Hillsboro Fire and Rescue is known for: quality customer
service, a strong work ethic, teamwork, outside-the-box thinking and professionalism in every aspect of his job. He is
truly deserving of this recognition,” said Nelson. He and his wife Erin live in Hillsboro with their two Weimaraners,
several years, he became employed with the corporate office at Windermere,
company. Eventually, Matt opened his own office in Hillsboro in 2001 and
became the Principal Licensed Broker in residential sales.
Matt oversees 30 brokers in Hillsboro and 2 in Pacific City and is
committed to building the community through the spirit of abundance,
teamwork and fidelity within the organization. Each year, he and his brokers
put on their work gloves and participate in service events throughout the area
for the Windermere Foundation. A few of the organizations that have benefited
from his team include: improving the grounds of the shelter at Community
Action, packing food boxes for the Oregon Food Bank, cleaning up Hillsboro
city parks and providing food to the Family Resource Center. He and his team
also made cash donations to Ruth’s House, One Name, Make it Better and
many more. These actions are beyond the monetary contribution that every
Matt Crile
broker in Matt’s company commits to from every transaction.
In addition, Matt serves on the Hillsboro School’s Foundation Board and
helps out with the Annual Gala, golf tournament and phone-a-thon. He served on
the Hillsboro Chamber Board from 2008-2011, has been on the Hillsboro Rotary for over 10 years and is a Paul Harris Fellow.
Said Windermere President, Brian Carlson, “In all the time I’ve known him, I’ve never seen him waiver from his
commitment to his family, community and the ones who work with and for him. Matt, as anyone who knows him will
attest, always wears the largest smile in the room and always has a minute to listen when you ask.”
Almost as soon as Doug Johnson moved to Hillsboro, he
became involved in the community. A Pharmacist and recent
graduate from the University of Washington, Doug began work
at Hillsboro Pharmacy in 1973, eventually purchasing it in 1978.
Working in the heart of Hillsboro, Doug became immersed in
various committees in the community, and was committed to
strengthening the core of Downtown. He was involved on the
planning committee for “Western Days” through the Chamber
of Commerce and a few years later helped start the Downtown
Business Association, serving on its Board and twice acted as
President. He also worked to get a grant from Oregon Main
Street Association, (Hillsboro was one out of five cities in the
state to be selected) to form a local improvement district to
rebuild infrastructure and sidewalks.
Doug Johnson
Johnson’s passion for the community can be seen through
the many organizations and committees he has been involved
that he started the Oregon Chorale which Kuehn formed with members of that group.
In 2003, he served on City Council for two terms, and was chair of the Finance Committee, appointed to the Vision
Implementation Committee (Hillsboro 2020) and the Hillsboro Library Board and remains a member of both today. Through
his investments in the community, Hillsboro has new event space in the Main Library, a mid-week market (an effort he is most
proud of) and an improved vision for the future of Hillsboro.
