PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
Transcona Collegiate….
Where Character Counts
The 2010-11 school year is rapidly drawing to a close. With this time of year come all sorts of
activities that bring closure to programs, highlight students and their successes, and facilitate a
conclusion to Semester Two courses.
Exams are just around the corner. For most courses, students are expected to write examinations
as part of the assessment and evaluation process. Please note the dates of both the examination
periods and the grade 12 standards exams elsewhere in the newsletter. Exams are worth 30% of
the final grade in any course.
In addition to course work and examinations, we are also preparing for Student Council award
ceremonies on May 20 th and graduation ceremonies and award presentations on June 28 th . It is a
busy season, but one that makes us proud of our students’ many achievements.
In this newsletter, you will find the Honour Roll list for mid-term reports in Semester Two.
These students have achieved an overall average of 80 % or better. Well done!
Final reports for the 2010-11 school year will be available on June 30 th from their TA from 8:45
a.m. to 10:30 a.m. If a student is unable to pick up his/her report, please ensure that the office
has a self–addressed envelope in which the report can be mailed. Should a student fail a course
and is interested in summer school, this information is available in the newsletter.
LOOKING AHEAD TO 2011-12
Registrations are now in for the upcoming school year. We are presently timetabling and
planning class configurations. Once this information is complete, parents and students will be
informed as follows:
- For Grade 9 students in 2011-12: Letters will be sent home in late August detailing
the arrangements for the first day of school (September 7 th , 2011). Timetables will be
distributed to all grade 9 students at school as part of the orientation to school.
- For grade 10-12 students in 2011-12: Letters will be sent home in late August.
These letters will contain information about the first day of school (September 7 th ,
2011) and a copy of the student’s timetable. Should any changes be necessary,
counselors will be available August 31 st , September 1 st and 2 nd .
TRI-SCHOOL CAMPUS INITIATIVE
The Tri-School Campus Initiative Committee, made up of a committed group of community
members along with students, staff and administration from Radisson Elementary, John Gunn
Middle School and Transcona Collegiate, have joined forces to revitalize the school’s
community recreational space.
The committee is working hard to provide a quality recreational space for our community
members and schools. Revitalizing the green space is essential to meet the evolving needs of our
area residents and students who represent all ages and abilities. So far, the committee has
obtained funds to construct an outdoor basketball court, and soccer field, and upgrade the
outdoor track facility. The committee is extremely pleased that the community is making good
use all of these facilities.
Last year it was brought to the attention of the committee that one of the older play structures at
Radisson Elementary School was deemed unsafe and needs to be removed. The committee’s
current goal is to replace this play structure with a new one and at a later date, plant trees on the
South and West sides of the play structure to provide shade for the children and
parents/grandparents who may be supervising. To date, the Tri-School Campus Initiative
Committee has raised $60,000 towards a play structure that costs $76, 709. We are hopeful that
we will obtain additional funds so that we can achieve our goal. We are planning our 2 nd
Annual Spring Fling on the tri-school grounds on Friday, May 27 th (5 – 8 p.m.) in hopes of
matching what we raised last year…$4500.
Please join us for our Annual Spring Fling on May 27 th , 2011 from 5 to 8 p.m. on the trischool
grounds! The event will include bouncers, low organized games, dunk tank,
entertainment, BBQ, face painting, henna tattoos and more!
Student Council News Wrap-up
School spirit lived out in so many ways! As we’ve gone through this year our one unifying theme
has been TITAN pride. When we decided to hold a dance, we wanted something that would really
epitomize our year and what we stand for, so we selected the theme Titanize. The students had a great
time at our final dance of the year and it really was a night to remember.
During the month of May, we have some great activities planned. On May 11 at 7:00 p.m. at
Radisson theatre we have TCI’s Got Talent. This is looking to be the best talent show ever with a
spectacular line-up and a few surprises thrown in! Tickets are $2.00 at the door. The election for the new
student council will take place on May 19 followed by our annual Student Council Awards on May 20
where we recognize the contribution that students have made to the school. Way to go Titans! The
Awards are followed by the year-end BBQ where we plan to have a couple of the local music acts and
some interactive activities. Hotdogs, drinks, and chips are on the menu and hopefully lots of sun. And
speaking of sun, at the end of this month on May 26 th we are doing Shades of Fun. This is a fundraiser to
support CNIB where, if you bring a dollar, you get a wristband and can wear your sunglasses inside all
day. This is sure to be another awesome day at TCI.
2010-2011 has gone by in a blur and I would like say that it has been an absolute pleasure being
your President. This has been my favorite year as a student at TCI and you are all a part of that. I would
especially like to thank my fellow members of the student council and the teachers that were ever-present
to help with our every need. Thank you for making this the best possible year.
Stuart Fletcher-Cook
President
The fundraising activity for 2010-2011 was introduced. This is the Shelter Box project. Shelter Boxes are
large boxes that contain tents, food, water purification system, clothing and other emergency supplies.
These are stock piled around the world to provide disaster assistance to a region in less than 48 hours.
One box will cost $1200 and we are trying to raise enough to purchase a Shelter Box.
tirelessly with the Big Brothers/Sisters Club of Winnipeg. This venture is the first of its kind in
Canada, where Big Brothers Big Sisters has partnered with a high school for mentoring purposes
and has now expanded to include other high schools in the city.
Princess and the Pea
Congratulations go out to the cast and crew of Princess and the Pea for a successful run
of the children's classic. In all of the performances, 5 shows sold out to audiences, most
of which were Early Years schools from our community. About 1500 enjoyed the mishaps
of the Paragonian Royals in their pursuit of a suitable bride amidst some fun and unique
princesses.
Special thanks go out to the students who worked on and coordinated the design and
building of the show as a complete volunteer effort. It couldn't have taken place without
you. As a final reminder to any cast member who would like to purchase a video of the
Music Notes
Our TCI Musicians have been very busy over the past few weeks, performing and traveling to perform in
Manitoba and even further. Keep reading for some highlights of our activities for the past while...
Chicago Music Tour
The Grade 11/12 Concert Band (with some grade 10s) and the Grade 10-12 Concert Choir
travelled to Chicago at the end of April to perform at the Heritage Music Festival. The students
all performed and behaved at the high level we've come to expect from TCI students and they
were rewarded with a special award at the festival. Our students were presented with the Spirit of
Chicago Award, an award that recognizes the group that best represents their community. It was
great to receive that award because we spend a lot of time at TCI emphasizing the importance of
character and this was a nice recognition of our students' character in action!
Music Friday Concert
On Friday, May 6, the TCI Bands and Choirs hosted our local elementary and middle schools for Music
Friday at TCI. Radisson, Joseph Teres, Westview, and John W Gunn all brought musicians and we each
performed a few pieces for the other groups before joining together at the end for a group song. This
concert was intended as a celebration of music in our school community as a part of the international
Music Monday event (we were in Chicago on Music Monday).
R.D. Parker Collegiate Jazz Bands to Visit TCI
We were excited to welcome the R.D. Parker (Thompson, MB) Jazz Band to TCI on Monday, May 16 for
a few hours to play with and for each other. They were embarking on a spring music tour and asked if
they could drop in to hang out and jam with us.
Final TCI Jazz Concert
Our Jazz Bands and Vocal Jazz Group will be performed on Tuesday, May 17 at 7:00pm at Abundant
Life Baptist Church (1396 Plessis Rd.). Thank you to everyone who came out to support our student
musicians! A silver collection was taken with proceeds going to the Music Parents Association.
Spring Fling
Come out to the Spring Fling on May 27 to watch the TCI Jazz Band and Vocal Jazz Group, as well as
groups from Radisson and John W Gunn. TCI will also be represented by rock bands Premonition and
Kobalt, which both feature TCI students and alumni.
Final TCI Band and Choir Concert
Our final concert for the year will take place on Wednesday, June 1 at 7:00pm outdoors on the tarmac by
the west side of the academic wing here at TCI. Bring a lawn chair and cheer on all of our Concert Bands
and Concert Choirs!
FUN IN THE SUN – KNOW THE RISKS
While outdoor activities are part of a healthy lifestyle, there is a danger you can’t see –
ultraviolet (UV) radiation. UV is part of the spectrum of light that comes from the sun. Most of
the dangerous radiation from the sun is blocked by ozone in the upper atmosphere, but small
amounts still come through. Natural sunlight is important to good health, but too much exposure
to UV rays increases the risk of sunburns, skin cancer and cataracts (a clouding of the lens of
the eye).
PROTECT YOURSELF AND YOUR FAMILY
Everyone loves to be outdoors when the sun is out. When enjoying the warm weather, a little
SunSense can protect you and your family. Take precautions between 11 am and 4 pm when
the sun’s rays are at their strongest, or any time of day when the UV Index is 3 or higher.
Check the UV Index before you go out on your local weather station
Cover your arms and legs.
Choose clothing that is loosefitting,
tightly woven and
lightweight
Wear a wide-brimmed hat to
protect your head, face, neck
and ears
Stay in the shade – under trees,
an awning or an umbrella
Wear sunglasses with UV
protection for your eyes
Use sunscreen with an SPF of
15 of higher on exposed parts of
your body. Apply it at least 20 minutes before going outside. Don’t forget your
ears and neck!
