Districting referendum up for debate Proposed committee could decide election process, number of commissioners by Deborah Parkhill Mullis news@unioncountyweekly.com Even though a mammogram can be a life-saving procedure, most women don’t look forward to the low-dose X-ray examination designed to detect breast cancer in its early stages. But annual testing is recommended for women over 40, and Charlotte Radiology’s Monroe Breast Center is doing its by Brian Carlton brian@unioncountyweekly.com Union County residents could see a referendum on district representation as soon as 2010 if the board of commissioners votes to establish a committee to look into the issue. The board of commissioners held a special work session Jan. 13 to discuss creating a Commissioner Governance Advisory Committee, suggested by Commissioner Tracy Kuehler. The committee would study and recommend how many commissioners the county should have and how they (more on page 8) best to counter anxiety about the procedure by focusing on comfort, convenience and digital technology. The center began by consolidating and relocating all mammography services to the new Carolinas Medical Center-Union Medical Plaza, 1550 Faulk St., last November. “The experience for women coming to Monroe will be different now that (the center) does screening mammography and diagnostic mammography,” said Shawna Platé, the practice’s community outreach manager. “Before, diagnostic procedures were done at the hospital.” (more on page 10) Federal commission proposes gas tax hike 10-cent increase would shore up revenue, but local officials question value by Brian Carlton brian@unioncountyweekly.com The cost of a tank of gas could rise once again if a federal transportation commission has its way. But local officials aren’t convinced it would help their projects. In a report scheduled to be released Tuesday, Feb. 10, the National Surface Transportation Infrastructure Financing Commission will suggest raising the federal gas tax 10 cents per gallon to offset declining revenue as fuel-efficiency standards are implemented, Chairman Robert Atkinson said.
