SHARING THE GOOD NEWS OF JESUS WITH ONE MILLION IN HAMPTON ROADS – 23rd YEAR

By Anugrah Kumar, Christian Post
A new study conducted among more than
1,700 pastors has found that clergy are at far
greater risk for depression and anxiety, mostly due
to stress, than those with other occupations.
The study by the Clergy Health Initiative (CHI)
at Durham-based Duke Divinity School
interviewed over 1,726 United Methodist pastors
in North Carolina by phone and through online
surveys. It found that the clergy depression
prevalence was 8.7 percent and 11.1 percent
respectively, significantly higher than the 5.5
percent rate of the national sample.
The study, published this week in the Journal
of Primary Prevention, also found that anxiety
rates among clergy were 13.5 percent, and more
than 7 percent of clergy experienced both
depression and anxiety.
"Pastors may have created a life for
themselves that is so strongly intertwined with their
ministry, that their emotional health is dependent
on the state of their ministry," CHI research director
Rae Jean Proeschold-Bell was quoted in the
study. "So it's possible that when pastors feel their
ministry is going well, they experience positive
emotions potent enough to buffer them from
mental distress. Of course, the converse is also
true.”
Depression and anxiety are caused mainly
due to stressful activities pastors are required to
undertake, such as grief counseling, fulfilling the
competing demands of church members and
delivering message every week during the worship
service, the study noted.
“It's common for public health professionals to
ask pastors to offer health programming to their
congregants," Proeschold-Bell remarked. "These
findings tell us that we need to reverse course and
consider how to attend to the mental health of
pastors themselves.”
Pastors should take time off ministry, form
friendships outside of the church and seek
counseling when required, but others can also
help, Proeschold-Bell said.
Seminaries can mentally prepare their
students to expect stress and train them to
negotiate conflict, Proeschold-Bell recommended.
Leaders of denominations should also understand
and compliment pastors serving churches with
conflict. Even church members can encourage
their pastors by taking up responsibilities so that
the clergy can take time away from the church.
“It's concerning that such a high percentage of
clergy may be depressed while they are trying to
inspire congregations, lead communities and
social change ventures, even just trying to do
counseling of their own parishioners," Proeschold-
Bell said. "These are responsibilities that you
would really want a mentally healthy person be
engaged in, and yet it may be the challenges of
those responsibilities that might be driving these
high rates of depression.”
The research is scheduled to continue over
the next three years.
Note: You can read two features on depression in this
issue of The Church Guide, beginning on page ten,
and again on page page 15.
The Internet, now in its 30s, is moving on from
common top-level domains like .COM and .ORG,
and the American Bible Society is fully in tow.
According to Scott Wennermark, director of
strategic advancement for the American Bible
Society, the .BIBLE top-level domain will allow the
197 year-old nonprofit to make the Bible more
accessible in “new and relevant ways.”
The .BIBLE domain has yet to be fully finalized
by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names
and Numbers (ICANN), the private, nonprofit
corporation that controls name spaces on the
Web. Those seeking to claim their own corner of
the Internet with .BIBLE as a main URL likely will
have to wait until 2015. The American Bible
Society states that it intends to protect the .BIBLE
from inappropriate use, and make it available to
individuals and groups who respect the Bible.

Exerpts taken from an interview with
Melissa Barnart of the Christian Post
Silas Merritt Robertson, who’s
best known as “Uncle Si” on A&E’s
most watched reality television show,
“Duck Dynasty,” has written a new book
titled, “Si-Cology 1: Tales and
Wisdowm from Duck Dynasty’s
Favorite Uncle,” available Sept. 3rd.
Si’s mastery of storytelling runs
throughout his descriptions of the
Vietnam War and how he met his wife,
Christine. The always jovial Uncle Si
also speaks candidly about the
difficulties he and Christine have face,
and how God has blessed and
sustained them throughout their 43
years of marriage.
Marriage Advice From Uncle Si
According to Si, marriage is a
union between two imperfect people
who are destined to make mistakes.
But at the end of the day, their love for
each other and faith in Jesus Christ will
bring them through every hardship and
enrich the most joyous times of their
lives.
"People have got to understand
that you've got to learn to laugh at
yourself when you make a mistake," Si
advised. "Don't get mad and fly off the
handle, OK. We're all human, and we
make mistakes.”
“What I tell young couples that are
getting married is: you're going to have
quarrels, and on some things, you're
just going to have to agree to disagree.
And when you go to bed at night, kiss
each other and tell each other that you
that He gave His only begotten son."
But they don't know nothin' about 17. It
says Jesus didn't come to condemn
us. If anybody had a right to condemn
someone, it would be the son of God. If
he didn't do it, then hey, we definitely
are not qualified to do it.”
When he meets atheists or those
who are agnostic, Si said he illustrates
his belief in God by reflecting on nature
and the world He's created.
“A person asked me one time,
‘what's the evidence that God is there?'
And I said, I'll go out here and pick up an
acorn from under a tree. You put it in the
ground and water it, and 40 years later
when you come back, there might be
an oak tree as big around as a pick-up
truck. Inside that little acorn is the
resurrection power. That has to come
from somewhere. It didn't just exist.”
Elaborating on his Christian faith
and the challenges it's brought him and
Christine through, Si commented that
he doesn't know to whom or what
people turn to if they don't believe in
God.
"I don't know what a person does
that does not have a relationship with
God. When he goes to the doctor and
the doctors says, hey, you've got less
than two months to live and there's
nothing we can do for you. Who do they
turn to when you're given something
that earth shattering?" he asked.
"Like me, personally, I know who
I'd turn to. I would be talking to the one
who created me. He's the one who
created us, and we're wonderfully
made. There've been numerous times
that a prayer has been requested for
someone who has cancer, and the
prayer was said, and the next thing the
person was told is: hey, you can go
home, we can't find nothing."
Are you discouraged and chaffing in the “position” you are in today? Does
it seem like this could not possibly be what God had in mind when He put His
vision in your heart? Then you need to understand the Biblical principle of God's
positioning process.
God's positioning process doesn't look anything like what we thought it
would—or what we want it to look like. If you perceive the positioning process with
natural eyes only, you are likely to get discouraged, and you may even give up.
Part of God's positioning process for Joseph was the pit—a minor detail that was
left out of the original vision God gave him concerning his destiny for the Lord! It's
during those days of the positioning process that God prepares us by working on
our hearts, our attitudes and our faith and trust in Him. The positioning process is
designed to do something in us so that, later, the Lord can do something through
us.
You don't have to understand
God's positioning process, but you
do have to trust God. Proverbs
3:5–6 says, “Trust in the LORD
with all your heart, lean not unto
your own understanding. In all
your ways acknowledge him, and
he will direct your paths.” When we
finally get to the point in our walk
with God where we understand
that we don't understand, God can
really use us.
God had already spoken to
Joseph about his ultimate destiny,
and so, when Joseph found
himself in the pit, he knew it was only temporary. No, God didn't allow Joseph to
know all of the details, or the fine print of the “road map” to his destiny, but He gave
him what he needed—the final destination. I believe God sometimes does it that
way so that we won't decline to take the trip before we even get started.
While Joseph was hanging out in the pit, it didn't look like he was
positioned to prosper. It actually looked like a dead end. In reality, it was a direct
route to his palace. You can be in what looks like a dead end situation or position.
Yet, like Joseph, you can find favor everywhere you go when you are obedient to
the Lord, because you know that He will position you to prosper in every area of
your life. The LORD was with Joseph and he prospered, and he lived in the
house of his Egyptian master. When his master saw that the LORD was with him
and that the LORD gave him success in everything he did, Joseph found favor in
his eyes and became his attendant. Potiphar put him in charge of his household,
and he entrusted to his care everything he owned. (Genesis 39:2–4)
As Jesus was growing up, He “grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor
with God and men” (Luke 2:52). I pray this Scripture over myself regularly, and I
would encourage you to do the same. I say, “Lord, I thank You that, just like Jesus
did, I grow in wisdom, in stature, and in favor with God and men today.” This was
not just for Jesus; it's also for you and me today. When you have the favor of God,
you can't help but have the favor of men.
There are four important keys to favor—where, when, what, and why. You
open yourself up to the favor of God when you are where you are supposed to be,
when you are supposed to be there, doing what you are supposed to be doing,
and doing it for the right “why”—the proper heart motive. That's what happened to
Esther. She had exceptional favor with the king because she was where she was
supposed to be (the palace), when she was supposed to be there (during the
search for a new queen), doing what she was supposed to be doing (following
whatever the palace staff told her to do), all for the right heart motive (for the
purpose of saving her people, the Jews). As a result, she made history!
As we submit to the will of the Father and allow ourselves to be led by the
Holy Spirit, we will step into God's favor and abundant provision. “For I know the
plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm
you, plans to give you hope and a future.” —Jeremiah 29:11
God has placed many
spiritual laws into existence,
just as we have many natural laws
(such as gravity). It is impossible to
please God without faith, this is a
spiritual reality. Faith is the substance
of things hoped for but not seen. Faith
means trusting in God and His Word.
To trust in God we must truly know
Him. We have to spend time in His
presence; fellowshipping with Him by
the Holy Spirit. We also must renew
our minds and study His Word. Faith is
not about our believing with our mind.
Faith is believing with our heart (spirit).
We have to submit our intellect to the
authority of the Word of God and then
ask the Holy Spirit to increase our
ability to believe beyond our
circumstances.
Our spirit must be so united with the
Lord that we know deep inside our inner
most being that God's promises are yes
and amen.
Many times people believe for
healing with their heads but do not allow
the Holy Spirit his rightful place to lead
and direct their paths. God will require
many of us to go after root issues in our
past that has produced the sickness or
disease. We may be required to go to
certain conferences or read specific
books, only the Holy Spirit can lead
each of us into our way of escape.
God is the God of the individual and
He has a specific way of escape from
every trap of the enemy. Many believers
try to choose the way of escape that
they want to take (like an instant
miracle).
However, the Holy Spirit has a
plan that must be followed in order to
actually walk into our victory. To the
believer that is mature God will have
greater requirements for them to enter
into their Bible promise. We can not
compare ourselves to one another only
the Holy Spirit has the action plan for
victory in each individual's life.
The spiritual laws are too
numerous for us to try and walk out
without the leading of the Holy Spirit.
God is looking for a people who will be
lead by His Spirit. Trying to make the
Bible work in our trial will never
accomplish the objective that God has
for us: He wants a people who know
Him.
To find the healing that the Bible
promises and that Jesus took stripes
on His back to secure for us, we must
be obedient to the Holy Spirit. He may
require that we face a fear head-on,
thus someone may have to go through
medical treatment that they are afraid
to tackle. God's grace can take you
through medical treatment. You may
have judged someone or made a
personal vow concerning someone's
decision to have or not have medical
treatment and thereby opening a way
for satan to have authority to bring the
same situation to you.
God is the God of the individual
from every trap of the enemy. Many
personal vow concerning someone’s
decision to have or not have medical
treatment and thereby opening a way
same situation to you.
One thing that you can know for
certain, is that God's Word is true.
Jesus is the healer and the Holy Spirit
knows your exact path to deliverance
and healing. Allow your opinions and
judgements to be laid at the cross and
follow the Lord. The Lord is faithful
even when we don't understand due to
our wrong thinking. The Lord wants us
to cry out for understanding and
wisdom. He is willing to teach us the
deeper truths of His Word and helps us
to walk in His ways.
It is wonderful to know as believers
that death has lost its sting. We go
directly into the arms of Jesus when we
leave our earthly tents. Every question
is answered and every tear is wiped
away. Let's live our lives with the
intention of growing in our knowledge
of this wonderful Jesus. Our God is
faithful.
The recent Zimmerman trial
divided many Americans by their views
on race, guns, and self-defense.
The unparalleled massacre of
innocent children at Sandy Hook,
divided many Americans on gun control
laws and the right to bear arms.
And recently, few issues
in American society have
provoked such polarized and
heated responses as the
same-sex marriage issue.
When you combine all of
these headlines, you quickly
discover that Babylon, a
system that tries to convince
people that they can make it
without God ... is crumbling.
Didn't we pledge, "One
n a t i o n , u n d e r G o d ,
indivisible with liberty and
justice for all?"
Christians are not exempt from
the propensity to react emotionally.
This is not surprising since our places
of worship remain some of the most
segregated institutions during service
times.
Why the perplexity? Haven't we
read, "God created man from the dust
of the ground" and housed that "man"
in a body? So then, we are all created
by God with just different shades of
dirt.
Proverbs 29:18 (NLT) says,
"When people do not accept divine
guidance, they run wild." Racial
tension is a sign of people not knowing
who they are in God and therefore run
wild with jealousy, comparisons, anger
and hatred. We are all one in God
created to fulfill a divine purpose
before we leave planet earth.
Americans have a constitutional
right to bear arms. Guns have no
volition or willpower to choose. A gun
is not evil. It cannot shoot by itself. It
did not ponder and finally decide to
shoot 26 people at Sandy Hook. A gun
is just an instrument.
However, when it gets in the hands
of troubled people, it does some pretty
sick stuff.
Many argue that no
person is aware of how they
will respond in times of
pressure. Today, times are
tough and hard to bear. What
does it take to make a person
snap? You do not want to get
to this point.
A man of understanding
(one who knows God) has a
Dr. Belinda G. Moss
calm and cool spirit. And
should you meet the one who
is under pressure, Psalms
91:7 says,” Though a
thousand fall at your side, though ten
thousand are dying around you, these
evils will not touch you.”
Furthermore, because bad things
can happen to good people, when you
are “under God” even in death there is
no sting. You simply change locations.
Finally, regarding the sanctity of
the "traditional" family, Malachi 4:6
promises a return of the fathers to the
children and the children to the fathers.
Why is this priority for God? It is
because societal ills and dysfunctions
have coincided with the breakdown of
the family unit.
For example, statistics on human
criminality overwhelmingly indicate that
broken homes are a major influence on
those who become lawless. Broken
homes are major contributors to drug
use, illegal sexual activity, inability to
secure gainful employment, jail
sentences, and almost every other
societal ill imaginable, including
immorality.
A family unit's glue is love — first the
love between husband and wife, and the
love among family members. Without
love, family cannot exist.
It is no wonder marriage and
relationship alternatives are sought
when there is no vision for the traditional
family unit.
Therefore, instead of attacking
these alternative lifestyles, why not
solidify the family unit as defined by God
and present an enviable example that is
undeniable.
Without a vision, the people perish.
Here is a vision: let us return to God; it is
the only system that guarantees total life
prosperity.
Finding Your Way Out of the Wilderness
When God delivered the Israelites from slavery in Egypt, they had to go
through the wilderness to get to the Promised Land He had for them. It was an
eleven-day journey, but they spent 40 long, painful years wandering in the
wilderness before any of them entered the land. And in the end, many of them
died in the wilderness.
We tend to shake our heads and think, “What was their problem? How
could they miss it?” But the reality is, many Christians today are wandering in their
own wilderness, rather than living the abundant life Jesus died to give them.
Identifying the Real Root of the Problem
The Israelites' slavery in Egypt is the equivalent of our slavery to sin. God
sent Moses to deliver them from bondage, and He sent Jesus Christ to set us free.
And just as the Israelites had to take a journey to possess their Promised Land,
we have to take a journey to possess the promises of God for our lives.
Now the Israelites thought their enemies—such as the Canaanites and
Amorites—were the problem that was keeping them from the Promised Land.
However, it was actually their thinking that kept them in the wilderness for so long,
because God was on their side. And if God is for you, who can be against you?
(See Romans 8:31.)
Well, we have our own brand of “ites”: sickness-ites, poverty-ites, grouchy
neighbor-ites, frustrating husband- or wife-ites… And we tend to think these
“enemies” are our problem.
But the truth is, God is on our side, and our problem is really in our thinking.
See, it's impossible to be happy and think sadness and depression. It's
impossible to be free from the bondage of sin if you think you are still in bondage to
sin. For example, thinking things like, “I'll never get over what happened to me,” “I
can't forgive them,” and “I can't overcome that; it's too hard!” keeps us from victory
over sin.
The good news is, if we will learn to think the way God thinks, we can
possess the freedom to have and enjoy life in Christ.
Your Journey Through the Wilderness of Your Soul
When you accept Jesus Christ as your Savior, your sins are forgiven and
you become a new creature in Christ (see 2 Corinthians 5:17). You are born
again! Romans 6:2 (AMP) says, “…How can we who died to sin live in it any
longer?” Jesus took our sins to the cross so we could be dead to sin and alive to
righteousness.
There's a part of you—the born-again part, your spirit—that's dead to sin.
That's why it bothers you now when you sin. The “wilderness” part of you—your
soul—is your unrenewed mind, out-of-control emotions, and stubborn will. The
journey you take through the wilderness is learning how to let the Holy Spirit
invade your soul (mind, will and emotions) and get into every part of your life: your
relationships, entertainment choices, profession, finances…
Romans 6:11 says, “Consider yourselves also dead to sin and your
relation to it broken, but alive to God [living in unbroken fellowship with Him] in
Christ Jesus” (AMP). I love this, because the word “consider” represents a
process in the mind. So this verse is essentially saying, “Now think you're dead to
sin; believe you're dead to sin.”
With the help of the Holy Spirit, you can control your thoughts and renew
your mind with God's Word. Instead of blaming everyone and everything else for
your problems, pray for God to help you take an inventory of what's been on your
mind so you can think about what you've been thinking about.
As you pray for the Holy Spirit to make you aware of thoughts that come
into your mind that don't line up with God's Word, you'll begin to realize when
those thoughts come and you can renew your mind with the Word.
I'm not saying it will always be easy to do this, but God will give you the
ability to do what you need to do if you will lean on Him. No matter what has
happened to you in the past or what is going on in your life right now, it has no
power to keep you from having an amazingly good future if you will walk by faith in
God. God loves you! He wants you to live with victory over sin so you can possess
His promises for your life today!
The Church Guide is a media ministry
reaching out to One Million of our neighbors
who do not know Christ and do not attend
church of any kind. We are called to fulfill the
Great Commission and that begins right here
in our back yard. We also strive to inspire, lift
up, encourage and help equip our brothers
and sisters in Christ in order that they might
be all that God has called them to be. For
those in need, we want them to know that
they are not alone and strive to provide a
listing of Christian outreach ministries who
desire to be of assistance.
It’s so important that Jesus be in all aspects
of our life … not only in our churches, but also
in our schools, in our work, in all of our daily
thoughts and actions. Our goal is to provide
you with current and vital information of
Christian interest. By doing so, we hope to
better enable you to select and support your
“home of worship,” and to find trustworthy
ministers in the marketplace to patronize and
conduct your business. We also present
extra-ordinary schools that can provide the
proper educational challenges for your
children and yourself.
I worked for the Virginian-Pilot
newspaper for twenty years, and we
had lots and lots of deadlines
throughout the day in order to put out
the various editions of the newspaper
and other products.
I enjoyed those deadlines. They
gave me structure, a point of purpose,
and at times a little stress.
I’ve always done well when
working on things at the last minute.
Some people say that “I work well
under pressure.”
Until today, as I was writing this
article, I would of said that I agreed with
that. That was the old me.
Now a days, I rely on God to help
me. I rely on His timing and His
purpose.
I’m sure you’ve heard plenty of
people share how God seems to do
things at the very last minute. Whatever
they might be going through, whatever
they might be praying for ... God comes
through, He does what He promised ...
but it is at the very last minute.
I know I can say I’ve seen that
plenty of times in my life.
Take for instance the publishing of
The Church Guide. I purposely do not
like to work on any of the pages, layout
or design until the very last moment.
Maybe the last five days of the month.
I like to wait upon the Lord.
I like to see what He is going to do
that month with His newspaper. I like for
whatever appears in the paper to be
fresh from Him. Good news from the
Holy Spirit.
It is not that I like to work under
pressure, because to work under
pressure is to rely on your own devices.
I’m not under pressure. I’m just
waiting to see what God is going to do,
and how He is going to use me that
month.
Typically, I give myself the last five
days of the month to put out the
following month’s issue of The Church
Guide.
But it never works out that way. I
might give myself five days, you know
just in case something happens ... well
something ALWAYS happens.
Somehow every single month
something occurs to steal my time
away from me. Some people have
even told me that the devil is trying to
stop me from publishing, because
whatever I am preparing is scaring him
and he’s trying to stop it from printing.
I don’t know about that. If I don’t
know what I’m publishing until God
shows me, how in the world does the
devil know. What I do know is that God
ALWAYS shows up.
Yes, like you, I used to say He
showed up at the very last moment. But
that’s not true.
It’s all in God’s timing. And what
this old believer has finally learned is
that God doesn’t need as much time as
I do to get The Church Guide published
Thankfully, he always stretches
the time a bit because He knows that
He’s relying on me to be His hands, feet
and mouth. And I’m not that smart and
surely not that fast anymore.
A few months ago, God told me to
publish a paper addressing Suicide ...
Choosing Death Over Life. It was one
of the most read issues to date.
Well two weeks ago, I had no idea
what the September issue’s feature
story was going to be. But then He
shared with me that it would be about
depression. It’s a hidden problem in the
church, and He wanted to penetrate
the darkness.
With five days left in the month, I
began to organize my files for the
September issue. At that time, He told
me that I would be writing the feature
article about depression on Thursday
(I began my five days on a Tuesday).
After the first day of laying out
what ads and stories would go where, I
started by second day with a major
surprise .... my computer crashed. It
promise to you.
would not boot up. I couldn’t get to ANY
of my files I needed.
I called my good friend David
Shepherd for help. He’s a neighbor two
doors down, and a man of God. He tried
everything he knew for three days, but
kept getting messages that files were
missing and if we continued we would
damage my computer.
The old man in me ordered new
system operating files (I use Windows
XP). You know how hard it is to find
brand new operating files with a license
that are that old? Well I did and I
ordered them off eBay around midnight
Wednesday, paid premium for over
night shipping because I knew that with
the Labor Day weekend approaching, I
had to do everything I could to get those
files. My timing was critical. (I thought).
Well needless to say, the files
came late Friday, they didn’t work and
after FOUR days of being dead in the
water, David gave me a new computer
system (new to me, it has Vista ... Ha).
So with God’s timing, I have a
newer, faster computer, I had all day
Thursday to write the article in this
paper for Him (what am I saying, He did
most of it) ... and by 8 pm Saturday, I
had all my fonts loaded and I was ready
to go. You are holding the paper in your
hands aren’t you. that’s my God for ya!

Emmanuel Episcopal Church has been
faithfully serving the Kempsville area for almost
170 years. Our membership is diverse,
exuberant, and filled with the fruits of the Holy
Spirit: love, kindness, gentleness & joy. We are
a strong, vital and vibrant parish and observe
our faith in Jesus Christ seriously, yet joyfully.
At the heart of worship is the
desire to meet God. As we seek
God in worship, we recognize
that He is here and working in our
lives. If you are seeking His
presence and power, The Church
Guide invites you to visit a
church this Sunday. There are
many invitations found right here
in these pages, but more can be
found on our website located at
www.TheChurchGuide.com.
God promises that all who seek
Him will find Him.
“‘Then you will call upon me and
come and pray to me, and I will
listen to you. You will seek me
and find me when you seek me
with all your heart. I will be found
by you,’ declares the Lord.” ~
Jeremiah 29:12-14
Have you recently said any of the
following: “Oh, your grandma is sick?
I'll pray for her,” or, “Oh – you want to
sell your home? I'll keep you in my
prayers!” I'm almost sure we have all
probably said something along these
lines, (and with every intention to
follow through,) yet somehow in the
end have forgotten to pray for the very
things that we agreed to lift up.
This is not to condemn
anyone, as we can probably
all attest to being busy or
just forgetting to pray. So
what do you do when you
have multiple requests, but
are rushing from place to
place and finding that your
prayer time is falling to the
wayside?
One way to keep this
from happening is to set
aside time away from all
other distractions just to pray. Sign off
from Facebook, turn the TV off, and
wait for a time when you're all alone.
Maybe it's before or after the kids are in
bed, or perhaps it's when the house is
still quiet before anyone is awake.
Whenever it is, make sure that you can
find a moment, (or hopefully longer,)
when it's just you and God.
For myself, I like to pray in the
morning when I wake up, as well as
before bed. These are the times that I
specifically set aside to pray, read my
Bible, and listen to God's voice. (That
doesn't count all of the times that I pray
while driving, at work, or even while in
my family room, but you get the idea.)
The word tells us to pray without
ceasing, (1 Thessalonians 5:17,) so
even if we're not praying out loud, we
can always pray silently no matter
where we are.
If you are looking for some extra
time just for prayer, this month, the
Crisis Pregnancy Center of Tidewater
is hosting a 24 hour prayer gathering,
and it will be a wonderful
time to come out and lift up
requests of all kinds. It can
be day or night, a few
minutes or a few hours, or
alone or with a group. Join
when you can and stay as
long as you feel led. Invite
others and help to spread
the word. Pray at the altar
and leave with warm cider or
hot cocoa. Since prayer will
be going on from Friday,
th
Saturday, September 21 at noon, you
can come during your lunch break,
before you go out to eat on Friday night,
or on Saturday morning after you run
the kids to soccer practice or swim
lessons.
While individual prayer is powerful
too, sometimes it's nice just to come
together as a group in prayer, so this
will be a wonderful opportunity to join
forces in lifting up life as well as any
other requests before our Lord. Join
Thanks to all of the modern day
conveniences, we live in a society
where the world is literally at our
fingertips. With the development of the
internet, we can fulfill an entire day's
work with just the click of a button. From
shopping for clothes or groceries, to
meeting and dating new people, the
possibilities are endless. It's a wonder
we ever lived without it!
Especially when it comes to
meeting people, the internet has
become a more widely accepted
means of doing so. It can be a bit
difficult to expand your social circle
when your hectic schedule barely
allows you time to breathe. The
challenge is especially great when your
search for friends is narrowed to
individuals that share similar Christian
beliefs and values. With the
development of online chat rooms, that
I saw the passing of a famous
news reporter become an event
covered by all the major news outlets.
Her entire professional career was
chronicled and displayed for all to see.
Her coverage of national and
international news became legendary.
Especially remarkable
was her assignments to
cover no less than ten United
States Presidents. As her
fellow journalists gave her
accolades, one phrase
echoed repeatedly. “She was
one of a kind.”
S o m a n y u n i q u e
individuals have come and
would be talked about in her memory.
She was one of a kind.
In modern times we have men
such as Billy Graham, another one of a
kind who brought the gospel of Christ to
millions around the world.
Then of course there's Lord Jesus
who gave up the splendor of
heaven and His life there with
Father God to come to earth
and become one of us, the
son
gone in our lifetime, sports
Gene Markland
figures, actors, politicians, National Prayer Center
and explorers, some of which
went to the moon and back.
They, the most unique and famous,
were all called one of a kind.
Through Bible history we also
learn the stories of other very unique
individuals. We discover people such
as King David. He was a mighty warrior
for God who slew Goliath, the giant
enemy of God's people. God used
David to forge a nation, the people of
Israel.
David was a man of great spiritual
depth and understanding, yet a man of
fiery human passion and fallibility.
However, he was a man after God's
own heart. He was one of a kind.
Remember the story in the Bible of
the woman who brought expensive
perfume, her personal fortune, and
anointed Jesus by pouring it out over
His head? After a disciple chastened
her for wasting it all, saying it could
have been sold to help the poor, Jesus
said that wherever the gospel is
preached around the world, her deed
challenge has been slimmed down to
almost nothing!
Chat rooms are a popular place to
visit and get acquainted with Christians
from all parts of the globe. People can
meet together and chat in real-time
without having to spend a fortune
calling long distance. It's a comfortable
setting to discuss current moral or
political issues, as well as lift and
inspire others through Christian
conversation. The advantages are
many, not to mention the countless
inspirational stories of people finding
the support and camaraderie they've
been lacking.
There are even individuals that
actually fall in love and marry one of
their chat buddies! Chat rooms can be
an excellent way to broaden your
horizons and find yourself choosing
from the pick of the litter.
Although there are a lot of benefits
of man. He did this to become
the legal sacrifice for our sin.
He became our kinsman
redeemer.
He took our place on the
cross and became sin for us
thereby enabling us to
become the righteousness of
God in Christ (II Corinthians
5:21 NIV). Yes Jesus is one
of a kind!
Then there's you dear Reader. Yes
you! God's word says that you are
fearfully and wonderfully made, (Psalm
139:14 NIV) formed by Him in your
Mother's womb (Job 31:15 NIV). God
doesn't love you because of what you
do. He loves you because of who you
are…His child.
Your heavenly Father loves you so
much in fact that He gave His only
begotten Son that you would be saved
and have life everlasting (John 3:16
NIV). He did this because He wants
you for Himself. Imagine that! He wants
you! He loves you so much that He is
absorbed with every detail of your life.
Even the number of hairs on your head
draws His attention (Luke 12:7 NLT).
Why, you may ask, does God love
you so much? Why? Because you are
His child, and are truly one of a kind!
Gene Markland is a Coach in the National
Prayer Center at the Christian Broadcasting
Network, and a staff writer for cbn.com
to online chatting, there are still
precautions to take in order to keep
your experience a safe and positive
one.
First of all, just as a general
reminder, it's wise to prohibit your kids
from going to chat rooms. There's no
way to tell who people really are, so it's
essential that your kids are protected
from any danger. This is applicable to
adults as well.
Of course you should be able to
relax and enjoy yourself, but be
cautious about who you correspond
with and don't trust too quickly. It's not
safe to give out your personal
information such as your real name,
address, phone number, etc. If
someone starts asking inappropriate
or personal questions, just close the
chat session. "Dirty talk" isn't
tolerated, so you don't have to put up
with it. Use your judgment and keep in
mind that if anyone makes you feel
uncomfortable you are entitled to
leave at any time.
If you should decide to meet
someone face to face, make sure you
have been in contact long enough that
you feel you sincerely know the
person. Arrange to meet in a public
place during the day, if you can, and let
a friend or family member know your
plans to ensure safety and security.
Trust your instincts on these things
because your gut sometimes knows
better than your head!
Like anything else, there are
going to be pros and cons to online
chatting. But, overall, Christian chat
can be a positive, beneficial
experience. If you simply follow the
safety tips, and go into it expecting to
meet friends and have a great time,
that's exactly what you'll find.

If this is the first time you have read
The Church Guide, or if you have
never taken this survey ... please
take a moment to quickly answer
the following ... (thank you!)
1. Has anyone ever told you that
God loves you and has a great
plan for your life? Yes No
2. If today were your last day on
earth, do you know for sure,
beyond a shadow of a doubt that
you would go to Heaven?
Yes No
3. If you answered, “yes” to the
above question, is that because
you are a good person and/or
because you attend church
regularly?
Yes No
4. Have you ever heard that the
Holy Bible reads, “for all have
sinned and come short of the glory
of God.” And “For the wages of sin
is death but the gift of God is
eternal life through Jesus Christ our
Lord.” And “Whosoever shall call
upon the name of the Lord shall be
saved?” Yes No
5. Did you know that you are a
“whosoever”? Yes No
Here’s a quick prayer for you; Lord,
bless each person who reads this
survey that they have long and
healthy lives. Jesus, do a quick
work in their heart and make
Yourself real to them. If they have
never called upon Your name, I
pray that they will do so right now
and continue to say the following...
Dear Lord Jesus, come into my
heart. Forgive me of my sin. Set me
free. Jesus, thank You that You died
for me. I believe that God raised
You from the dead. Fill me with the
Holy Spirit, the peace of God, and
the joy of the Lord. Give me a
passion to reach the lost, a hunger
for the things of God, and a holy
boldness to preach the Gospel of
Jesus Christ. I’m saved. I’m bornagain.
I’m forgiven, and I’m on my
way to Heaven because I have
Jesus in my heart. Thank You
Jesus!
Are you the broken Christian,
whose journey has taken you away
from God, leaving you feeling
unworthy again? Like the younger
son in the Prodigal Son account, He
wants to remind you that nothing can
separate you from His love! He's
watching for you right now.
Are you the Christian
trying so hard to obey His
Word that you're angry
with those who aren't? Has
y o u r o u t r a g e a t t h e
disrespect others are
s h o w i n g y o u r S a v i o r
disrupted your lovingkindness,
as it did the older
brother in that same Prodigal
Son account? God loves
your respect for His word---
and your obedience---but He
wants you to have peace of mind.
Jesus is looking for you, so He can tell
you to let Him (Jesus) judge others; let
Him change them: You be His angels,
finding new ways to break up the
darkness around unbelievers with the
good news that God is With Us!
Are you angry that Christians
aren't what they should be? Jesus is
looking for you, too, eager to let you
discover He's everything you're looking
for when you look at Christians. He's
eager to show you His love, and to
teach you that anger at others only
punishes you. Expecting Christians to
be perfect pressures many of them to
try too hard to be good (Martha) instead
On the way from a doctor's
appointment, I was listening to the
radio. One of my favorite songs blared
life and excitement into my car: "O,
Praise Him" by the David Crowder
Band. I got so excited and started
singing with him!
Listen to some of the
words: Turn your ear to
heaven / and hear / the noise
inside. / The sound of angels'
awe. / The sound of angels'
songs / And all this for a King /
All to Christ we sing! / O,
praise Him O praise Him, / He
is Holy, He is Holy!
Another verse says, "Turn
your gaze toward heaven and
raise a joyous noise. . ." Just as I had
turned my gaze and my ear toward
heaven, three little blackbirds danced
with effortless grace inside my
periphery, while I was rapturously
declaring, "He is Holy! He is Holy!" and I
smiled!
The angels declare God to be
Holy, Holy, Holy -- that's THRICE holy!
That's the ultimate in holiness! That's
Are you the lonely single parent
left to raise your family alone? The
alcoholic who's failed so often even
you don't want to be with you? The
meth addict whose body
has sold your heart out,
robbing you of the
strength to even cry out
to God? Jesus wants you
to know He sees you made
whole---some here and
some not until heaven—
but He wants you to know
He sees you with eyes of
love and not words of
reproof.
Are you the child
whose parents are gone,
or have rejected you, leaving you
bewildered and stunned? Jesus
wants you to know He is with you right
now. He does not want you to feel
abandoned; He wants you to rest your
head on Him.
Are you broken in hidden ways,
desperately afraid someone will
those struggles making you ashamed
to meet Jesus because you know He
knows? He wants you to know you are
There are people in the pews
every week, including ministers,
struggling with depression. So often
the members of a church pretend this is
not a real issue because they have a
difficult time understanding it. They
think, “why don't they just snap out of it,”
or “why don't they just pray and let God
fix it.” Perhaps we say a prayer for
them, or add them to the prayer list, but
that's about all we feel we can do. So
we continue to minister to the “normal”
people in the church or the ones with
“real” problems that we better see the
effects of … like cancer, physical
injuries, heart problems or dementia.
Christians feel guilty about being
depressed. They feel that their faith in
God should prevent such suffering.
They have been hooked by health and
wealth preaching, and come to believe
that the truly faithful should prosper
both physically and financially … so
they reason, if they were truly faithful
they should be free of any mental
problems like depression.
This leads to denial, which only
makes matters worse. Well-meaning
friends, including pastors, who don't
understand what is going on,
encourage them to “rise above it,” and
offer prayer or advice on “becoming
stronger in their faith.”
But what happens after someone
has attempted to “let go and let God,”
and now feels unworthy and forsaken
… They begin to question their faith.
They begin to question their God.
So those who are feeling
depressed feel that they must hide their
sufferings from the brethren. They feel
shamed, so they pull away from the
church, they pull away from their
friends and family, and they pull away
from seeking the compassionate and
professional help that they truly need.
.
Medical statistics indicate that in
the adult U.S. population, approximately
12 percent of the males and 18
percent of the females have had a
major depressive episode at some
time. That's huge. That means that if
you look at the rows of people in your
church, there is probably one person
on each row (or at least every other row)
experiencing some form of depression.
This article in The Church Guide
cannot address all the aspects of
depression and its causes. There are
just too many possibilities that might
contribute to its cause and degree of
intensity. The list includes such things
as: chemical imbalance of the brain,
external (exogenous) causes, stress,
heredity and genetic factors, dietary
contributors, and of course spiritual
factors.
Despite the cause, the most
agonizing fact of this illness is that
darkness takes over the mind. Nothing
seems to be able to penetrate the
darkness. Life and light seem beyond
reach. They are unable to feel loved
and needed. They feel separated from
everything that was near and dear to
them, including God.
Sufferers face diminished interest
or pleasure in activities they once
enjoyed. They may experience
significant appetite changes, insomnia
or hypersomnia, and the inability to
concentrate or focus. They are not as
patient as they used to be. They get
frustrated and angry more easily. Little
things that never bothered them, now
do. They are plagued with persistent
and unshakable feelings of guilt and
worthlessness that are sometimes
accompanied by suicidal thoughts or
belief that life is not worth living (this is
why it is so important to get help for
d e p r e s s i o n ) . A n g e r s e t s i n .
Disappointment sets in. Hopelessness
sets in.
The dilemma is that because
people who are struggling with
depression feel a pronounced absence
of all things good, it can be difficult to
communicate with them and provide
words of encouragement. They don't
feel like being around people anymore,
whether at church or at home.
But isn't it strange that if we were
to get a sore throat or a migraine
headache, we seek and get
condolences from others, and we go to
the doctor and get treated. As a result,
the pain is gone; and the soreness
disappears and goes away. But if we
have a mental condition, like
depression, we view it as a sign of
weakness, there is a stigma attached to
it … so we try to face the darkness
alone.
So let's stop this article right here!
If you, or someone you know and
love, are showing signs of depression
... get help. Yes God will help you, and
we will address that in this article … but
I am referring to help from a counselor,
therapist, or doctor who knows
depression. Preferably someone who
is licensed. They typically have
credentials like LPC (Licensed
Professional Counselor), LCSW
(Licensed Clinical Social Worker), or
PhD / PsyD in clinical psychology.
When you contact them, make
sure that they specialize in helping
those challenged with depression. I
would also encourage you to go to
someone who treats patients and not
the disease. Someone who's
treatment methods follow those of Dr.
Herbert Spiegel (1914-2009) and Sir
William Osler (1849-1919). Osler said
that "It is much more important to know
what sort of patient has a disease than
what sort of disease the patient has."
God has personally put people on this
earth that He has gifted, planned their
calling, equipped them, and prepared
them to help you (or your loved one).
The remainder of this feature
addresses spiritual roots, causes, and
relief from depression. We are
addressing a state of mind somewhere
between “feeling the blues” and
“chronic depression.”
So the truth is that Christians can
and do get depressed. I know that I
have, more than once.
It doesn't mean your faith is weak.
It doesn't mean God is punishing you or
that God has forgotten you. It's not
because you are worthless, because
that's just not true … God loves you for
who you are. He created you ... you are
beautiful in His sight.
Unfortunately depression is an
affliction that makes it more difficult for
the individual to be around other
people, so the individual goes through
a spiritual withdrawal. They aren't
interested in going to church, in
praying, or feeling charitable.
As mentioned earlier, depression
is the absence of feeling anything
good. Can you imagine how that must
feel? Can you imagine for a moment
what life would be like if you felt
stripped of God's love, His blessings,
mercy and grace. Life would be hell.
That's where the depressed are
coming from, that's what they are
feeling … that overwhelming sense of
darkness and gloom.
The first step to overcoming our
depression is to admit we are in
despair.
Jesus said in Matthew 11:28-30,
“Come to me, all you who are weary
and burdened, and I will give you rest.
Take my yoke upon you and learn from
me, for I am gentle and humble in heart,
and you will find rest for your souls. For
my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
Jesus understands our dark
feelings, our discouragement, our
depression. He experienced the same
on the cross. He draws near when you
suffer. And no matter how low you go,
you will find God there to lift you up
again. His desire is to help us, to heal
us. That is because we have a
sympathetic Savior. Even though the
devil tries to oppress us so he can
control us, God uses these things for
good.
Therefore, we must confront our
depression, and bring it under the
control of the Holy Spirit.
Pastor Angus McDonald of
Great Bridge Freewill Evangelical
Church in Chesapeake shared five
questions with me that we should ask
ourselves in order to better understand
the root of our depression, and
determine if there is a spiritual solution.
The first questions we should ask
ourselves: “Is this a call to prayer?”
What you are doing here is asking
God through prayer if your depression
is caused by something you have done,
or is it brought on by someone else.
Is the emotional suffering of
someone else affecting how you are
feeling? There are many ways where
living or knowing someone else with
depression can affect you negatively as
well. Spouses, family members,
friends, co-workers can easily be
dragged down themselves in such colaboring
relationships.
If you are close to someone who is
depressed, you might feel guilty
because you have listened to the lies in
your head leading you to believe that
you are the cause of, or that you
contributed to their depression ... or
that there was something more you
could have done, or something you
shouldn't have done that caused the
suffering in someone else.
Maybe you're co-laboring with a
friend who has lost a loved one, or has
just lost her job, or didn't get into the
college they were hoping for, or any
number of similar events. Once you
realize your feeling down is because
you are sympathizing with the feelings
of someone else, you are on your way
to overcoming your depression. But
realize that if you continue to bear their
feelings, you'll have two people
depressed.
So go to the Lord In prayer and He
will reveal if the cause of your feeling
the blues is that you are overly
compassionate for sufferings of
someone else.
If that is not the cause of your
depression, ask the Lord “Have I hurt
someone?”
Is that why you are feeling
depressed?
Please realize that the hurt could
be legitimate or unfounded. What
matters to the other person is that “they
believe” you did something, said
something or caused something that
hurt them someway, somehow.
When you hurt someone, they can
become bitter. Bitterness opens the
doors for demon spirits like
unforgiveness, revenge, and hatred.
Ephesians 4:26 reminds us to “be
angry, and yet do no sin; do not let the
sun go down on your anger (NASB).
If the Lord shows you that your
depression is because you have hurt
someone, then you need to ask that
person for forgiveness. If it is a
misunderstanding, false accusation, lie
or false belief, then you will need to ask
God how you can correct the problem,
correct the hurt, correct the pain,
correct the lie.
G o d d o e s n o t w a n t y o u
depressed. He will lead you through it
and out of it.
Probably an even more revealing
question that could uncover years of
pain contributing to your depression is
“Has someone or something hurt
me?”
Experiences in life can leave
scars. Some are seen, many are not.
Something as horrific as ongoing
physical or sexual abuse can cause
extensive psychological damage. A
continuous barrage of being sinned
against can cause young men and
women to believe over time, that they
deserve their sad fate … that they
aren't good enough … aren't worthy
enough … aren't smart enough … and
that no one, not even God, could
possibly love them.
If your depression is revealed to
be caused by such traumatic events in
the past, you may need the help of a
professional counselor to assist you in
overcoming the suffering and the
repressed memories of those painful
and traumatic past experiences.
As horrible as those experiences
might have been (or continue to be),
are you also carrying feelings of hatred,
anger, resentment, unforgiveness.
These spiritual demons all need to be
removed in order to overcome your
suffering. Ask God for His help in
forgiving those who have perpetuated
them, ask for His help in curbing your
anger and hatred. Ask for His help in
healing you, and putting the hurts in
your past.
Maybe you are depressed for no
other reason than you have a job that
doesn't utilize your talents, doesn't pay
well, leaves you with no future, or
d e h u m a n i z e s y o u . S u c h
disappointment over time can lead to
feelings of depression.
If God reveals that this is what is
causing your depression, ask Him God
what should you do about it? Should
you get more education. Do you need
the courage and boldness to quit, and
faith and trust in God that He has a
better plan for you? Did God place you
there for a purpose that He is just now
revealing to you?
Sometimes we can get depressed
when we feel disappointment. Maybe
we have prayed for something, but it
didn't happen. If we don't go to the Lord
in prayer and submit our disappointment,
we can end up feeling depressed
or even angry. Whatever the reason …
pray! Perhaps the timing is off, and we
are not mature enough to wait patiently
on the Lord. Pray … what will the Lord
reveal to you.
The Bible says we must discipline
ourselves for the purpose of godliness
(1 Timothy 4:7). Discipline by definition,
means going against our feelings. We
may not feel like dieting, but if you are
disciplined, you do it anyway and you
get the results you and God desire. You
may feel like going on a shopping spree
and buying that big screen TV you have
been longing for, but if you are
disciplined, you set yourself up on a
budget and you live by it.
God has given us the resources to
be overwhelming conquerors in even
the most desperate situations,
including facing death. Romans 8: 35-
37 encourages us to live by faith not by
our circumstances … “who will
separate us from the love of Christ?
Will tribulation, or distress, or
persecution, or famine, or nakedness,
or peril, or sword? Just as it is written,
'For your sake we are being put to
death all day long; we were considered
as sheep to be slaughtered.' But in all
these things we overwhelmingly
conquer through Him who loved us.”
If God still hasn't revealed the root
of your depression, the next question
you might ask, “Have I hurt you
Lord?”
“Is there some way I have hurt
you?” “Haven't I been there for you
Lord? “Have I not been spending
enough time with you Lord? … with
Your Word?
Perhaps your depression is
because you have sinned against God.
Guilt and shame can develop and
persist because of secret or
unconfessed sins in a person's life.
Maybe we feel that we have let God
down in some major way, and we are
wondering if we have stepped outside
of His Will. Maybe we've bought into
the lies in our head that our sin was
unforgiveable, thus bringing about
feelings of doom.
These perpetual feeling over time
can trigger a depressive episode.
In our first question, we saw how
you can be depressed because
someone who is near and dear to you is
depressed. Essentially that is what is
spiritually happening here. Your spirit
can grieve the Holy Spirit. Your spirit is
in despair because the Holy Spirit is in
despair.
We can find the very first example
of depression due to guilt in the book of
Genesis, when Cain's offering to God
was rejected. He became gloomy and
instead of repenting, he murdered his
brother, thus sinking even deeper into a
state of depression. We find the Lord
asking Cain in Genesis 4: 6-7 “Why are
you angry? Why does your face look
sad? You know that if you do what is
right, I will accept you. But if you don't,
sin is ready to attack you. That sin will
want to control you, but you must
control it.”
King David committed adultery
and then sent Bathsheba's husband to
the front lines knowing he would be
killed. He became depressed because
of his guilt, but he confessed his sins
and sought God's forgiveness.
Let's read God's word on this …
“For I said in my haste, 'I am cut off from
before Your eyes; nevertheless You
heard the voice of my supplications.
When I cried out to You. Oh, love the
Lord, all you His saints! For the Lord
preserves the faithful. And fully repays
the proud person. Be of good courage.
And He shall strengthen your heart. All
you who hope in the Lord. Bledssed is
he whose transgression is forgiven.
Whose sin is covered. Blessed is the
man to whom the Lord does not impute
iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no
deceit … I acknowledged my sin to You,
and my iniquity I have not hidden. I
said, 'I will confess my transgressions
to the Lord, and You forgave the iniquity
of my sin. Selah.” –
Psalm 31:22, 32:2, 32:5
(NKJV).
If your depression's
root is in your guilt for
having sinned against
God, David's example
shows that the pain and
suffering can be eased
and overcome by going
to God in prayer and
confessing your sins
and seeking His forgiveness.
John 1:9 confirms
this, “If we confess our
sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us
our sins and to cleanse us from all
unrighteousness.”
Therefore, we need to go to God in
prayer. What will God reveal to you?
But because depression affects
your spirituality, you might be feeling
that God has abandoned you. We feel
frustrated, worried, angry, and feel like
God's Word no longer seems to be
working in our life. We begin to feel that
God doesn't seem to be honoring His
promises. We cannot understand why
God doesn't answer our
prayers. It's a desperate
cry from the heart of many.
Doesn't God see what
we are going through?
Doesn't God care?
These are all lies of
the devil. Fight those
thoughts. Rebuke those
lies. Trust in God, because
He has always been good
to you. The Bible reassures us that God
will never leave us nor forsake us.
“The Lord is the one who goes
ahead of you; He will be with you. He
will not fail you or forsake you. Do not
fear or be dismayed.”Deuteronomy
31:8 (NASB)
“Have I not commanded you? Be
strong and courageous! Do not tremble
or be dismayed, for the Lord your God
is with you wherever you go.” Joshua
1:9 (NASB)
“Casting all your anxiety on Him,
because He cares for you.” 1 Peter 5:7
(NASB)
If you are still seeking the spiritual
cause of your depression, and none of
the other prayers revealed a source,
then you need to consider that you
might just be under attack by the
enemy. Pray, “Lord, is someone
trying to hurt me?” or “has someone
hurt me?” Do I need to change my
circumstances?
Experiences in life can leave
scars. Some are seen, many are not.
Something as horrific as ongoing
physical or sexual abuse can cause
extensive psychological damage. A
continuous barrage of being sinned
against can cause young men and
women to believe over time, that they
deserve their sad fate … that
they aren't good enough …
aren't worthy enough … aren't
smart enough … and that no
one, not even God, could
possibly love them.
Do I need to change
my circumstances?
Are we in enemy territory,
should we get ready for
spiritual warfare? Or should I
just bear with it until He acts?
Sometimes the Lord just
wants us to take steps to get
ourselves out of trouble, or whatever
is causing our despair.
Are you single and looking for
a spouse? Maybe you are feeling
depressed because going to night
clubs isn't working. There are no
singles at your church who interest
you. Your attempt with computer
dating was disastrous. Maybe
God has something different He
wants you to do, that He will reveal
if you come to Him in prayer.
Joyce Meyer preaches
“the battle of the mind.”
Depression, for
many, is nothing
more than our
xxxx
xxxx
xxxxxxxx
xxxxxx
xxxxxx
x xx
thoughts dwelling on a bunch of
emotions, lies, and hurt feelings.
Bearing in mind that because we are
depressed, our feelings have become
distorted, we must strive to remind
ourselves daily that we cannot trust our
feelings nor pay attention to them.
Jesus tells us to keep our mind on Him
and not on the things of this world.
Granted, that can be hard to do if
left to our own devices, but thank God
He has given us His Holy Spirit to
comfort us and direct us.
We Christians need to live our
lives based on truth, not on our feelings
… based upon what we cannot see, not
what is seen. That requires a lot of
faith. Again, if you are depressed, that
does not mean that you are lacking in
faith. What you might be lacking in is
trust, not faith.
By Brad Mattes ~ LifeNews.com
Just when I think I've heard it all,
I come across something that makes
me pause in disgust. I read an article
from the Huffington Post titled, “How
Do You Feel about Sex and Teenage
Sleepovers?”
There's no doubt how I feel, but
let's first take a look at what the author
said. In the first paragraph she asks,
“Why not teach children how to have
sex well, the way you teach them how
to do other things?” She elaborates,
describing parents inviting the
teenager's partner over, having a nice
dinner and then the couple “toddles” off
to bed together. (In reality, that's just
permitting the behavior to take place,
not actually educating.)
Then she goes further stating, “It
seems logical to me that the same way
I try to teach my kids to exercise, sleep
well and be good people, I would teach
them to have healthy sex with other
good people.” Appalling mental
scenarios come to mind, but I'm not
going there. The author's arguments in
the article are built on a number of
faulty premises. I'll address three:
1. Blaming abstinence-only sexeducation
for the teen pregnancy
rate in the US.
Abstinence-only sex-ed has
become increasingly rare in our
schools, instead being replaced by socalled
comprehensive sex-ed. The
truth is, comprehensive sex-ed isn't
working. It fosters an environment of
promoting adolescent sexual activity
by implying that teen relationships
should include sex.
Further, it falsely assumes that
teens don't have the ability to avoid
sexual experimentation. Teens are
actually empowered by embracing
sexual purity. For example, a group
called Healthy Visions has been
welcomed into high schools to tackle
tough issues like promiscuity. They
present teens with the consequences
of sexual activity and empower them to
make better life choices. Through their
n o - n o n s e n s e , s t r a i g h t - f o r w a r d
approach, teens are shown they can
“change their story.” The impact it's had
on students' lives is nothing short of
astounding.
2. Presenting only 2 perspectives:
either abstinence means “sex-isbad”
or promiscuity equals “sex-isawesome.”
Just because a person believes in
abstinence doesn't mean that he or she
thinks sex is bad. In fact, I support
abstinence and think sex is great! But
it's a gift to be given within marriage,
rather than promoting it as something
casual. It's an act that's to be treated
with respect.
Recently, Duck Dynasty stars
Jase Robertson and wife Missy shared
why they chose to wait until marriage to
have sex. Jase told reporters, “We
were both virgins when we got married
until our wedding night. We decided to
do it God's way and basically had a
godly agreement that we would help
each other get to heaven.” Teaching
teens respect and encouraging selfcontrol
reinforces how awesome sex
really is and why it's important to wait
for the right time and the right person.
3. Downplaying the risks of teen
sex, while calling abstinence the
“scare-them-silly” camp.
We live in a highly sex-saturated
culture that mocks abstinence.
Unfortunately, this has made it easy for
teens to embrace casual sex. Yet,
there are consequences for those
actions. No matter how “healthy” and
“responsible” sex is, young people are
putting themselves at risk of sexually
transmitted diseases, unplanned
pregnancies and all but certain
emotional repercussions. This isn't
about instilling a false sense of fear;
there are real dangers that exist and
cannot be ignored. Abstinence offers
the only truly healthy alternative.
Surprisingly, there's one thing that
the author and I agree on—the role of
parents. She writes, “It also turns out
that parents have more influence on
what their kids think and do about sex
than teachers do. Parental attitudes, it
turns out, are far more influential and
meaningful.” That's why it's crucial we
stay engaged in our children's lives
and not be afraid to discuss sexual
purity. We have to be honest; it isn't
easy for teens to remain abstinent.
Olympic athlete, Lolo Jones
shared this about her efforts to remain
abstinent, “It's just something, a gift
that I want to give to my husband. But
please understand this journey has
been hard… Harder than training for
the Olympics, harder than graduating
from college, has been to stay a virgin
before marriage.”
What's not surprising is abortiongiant
Planned Parenthood also openly
advocates for teen sex. From their
perspective, “The solution… is to teach
young people how to experience
sexual pleasure instead of teaching
them not to have sex.” Their motive is
clear. When teens are sexually active,
they need to rely on Planned
Parenthood's services, including their
lucrative abortion “services.” It's a sick
and manipulative approach that fuels
Planned Parenthood's business
model. It's why we must diligently fight
to protect the lives of not just the
unborn, but of our young people.
LOCATED CENTRALLY BETWEEN THE OCEANA, HILLTOP, GREAT NECK & LYNNHAVEN AREAS
Of course when you are suffering
from a host of physical, emotional and
mental symptoms, it is very difficult to
accept that you need to put your
complete trust in the Lord. Recovery is
a process. Even with medication,
therapy and prayer … it takes time.
“Trust in the Lord with all your
heart, and lean not on your own
understanding; in all your ways
acknowledge Him, and He shall direct
your paths.” Proverbs 3: 5-6 (NKJV)
We need to remind ourselves that
“weeping may endure for a night, but
joy cometh in the morning.” Yes, the
troubles in this world are only
temporary. We must cling to what we
know and what we believe … that God
IS with us, that He LOVES us, and that
His Word is TRUE and all powerful.
Feelings can change like the wind.
They are colored by our circumstances
and circumstances come and go.
However, God's Word remains
constant, it never changes.
Go to God in prayer. Seek God
Himself, not just relief.
nd
This is so evident in the 42
Psalm. Here the psalmist suffering
from depression can only be satisfied
by seeking God. His thirst for God
seems to grow in intensity. He desires
nothing more than God Himself. He
puts all of his hope in Him. He is his
help, his comforter.
The psalmist knew God before his
tribulation and depression. He calls
God, “my God (42:6, 43:4); “the God of
my life” (42:8); “my rock” (42:9); “the
God of my strength” (43:2); “God my
exceeding joy” (43:4). The psalmist
spent time with God in the past and
knew God would be his refuge in this
time of despair.
Typically a depressed person
does not feel like praising God, but here
in Psalm 42:8, the psalmist seeks to
praise God. Praise is a command, not
a feeling. If we obey God, we follow His
commands and we often feel better
(43:4). To praise God is to focus on His
attributes and actions and not on our
own despair and emotions.
“Rejoice in the Lord always. Again
I will say, rejoice! Let your gentleness
be known to all men. The Lord is at
hand. Be anxious for nothing, but in
everything by prayer and supplication,
with thanksgiving, let your requests be
made known to God; and the peace of
G o d , w h i c h s u r p a s s e s a l l
understanding, will guard your hearts
and minds through Christ Jesus.
Finally, brethren, whatever things are
true, whatever things are noble,
whatever things are just, whatever
things are pure, whatever things are
lovely, whatever things are of good
report, if there is any virtue and if there
is anything praiseworthy, meditate on
these things.” -- Phillippians 4:4-8
(NIV)
We all will feel variations of
depression in our lives. The cure is a
relationship with God and trust in His
never ending love for you. You need
God. You need to always be seeking
God, praising Him for who He is. You
will find that He IS your only source of
hope and help, no matter how
despairing your circumstances.
“We are hard pressed on every
side, yet not crushed; we are
perplexed, but not in despair;
persecuted, but not forsaken; struck
down, but not destroyed … Therefore,
we do not lose heart. Though outwardly
we are wasting away, yet inwardly we
are being renewed day by day. For our
light and momentary troubles are
achieving for us an eternal glory that far
outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes
not on what is seen, but on what is
unseen. For what is seen is temporary,
but what is unseen is eternal.”
-- 2 Corinthians 4:8-9, 26-28 (NIV)
Final comments:
As we pray about the causes of
depression, especially the spiritual
causes … the church must examine if it
is responsible in any way for creating it.
God's Word delivers people from guilt
and fear. God Himself tells us over and
over … do not fear. It is because of His
grace and mercy that we are forgiven
and our sins (guilt) is forgotten. But
sometimes the overly righteous do not
feel that individuals do not feel guilty
enough to take the gospel seriously.
We preach to them in a way to
make them feel guilty. We throw
scriptures at them to make them feel
guilty. Entire messages are created to
make people afraid … VERY AFRAID.
Sadly, that means some churches do a
better job at making people feel guilty
then they do in delivering them from
their guilt. Is this what Jesus wants
from His church?
You can see this in the “hot
buttons” of today, like abortion,
homosexuality, and gay marriage. The
church shouldn't be trying to solicit
change by generating feelings of guilt
and nonacceptance, the church should
be loving them and bringing them into a
closer relationship with Jesus. He will
make right those things that need
change when they become a new
person in Christ.
Depression affects more than just
the victim, it affects everyone close to
them. People who try to help can end up
feeling rejected and taking such
behaviors and outbursts personally.
They simply don't understand the
dynamics of what is going on. Their
reactions can make things worse … so
there is need for training, support, and
maybe evening counseling.
The body of Christ must support
members in need. Church members
can lift up the needs of the depressed
corporately and through intercessory
prayer. Pastors and friends can deliver
meals, send cards, care for the
children, personally drive them to a
counselor. Depressed people need to
be recognized and urgently cared for,
they need well wishers, they need
human contact even though they are
trying so hard to avoid it.
who has suffered from Bi-Polar Depression for over
twenty years. They are quick to testify that their son's
medications help to stabilize his thinking and mood
swings. Although their son may not have the same level
of trust and faith in Jesus as they do, the most dramatic
and obvious indicator affecting his depression and
mood swings is whether he spends time reading God's
Word.

By Rev. Kevin J. Coward, M.A., L.P.C.
rd
At the very heart of the beloved 23 Psalm is
this profound statement that each of us has
spoken numerous times:
“Yea, though I walk through the valley
of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil:
for thou art with me;
thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.”
I make it part of my practice as a Christian
Counselor to point out to those who come to see
me and have them notice carefully as the psalmist
says, 'walk through'; therefore, the inference here
is that you and I are not to campout down there.
Some folks do get stuck and they need
someone to come alongside and lift them up.
Second to that idea is that the Lord does not
prevent us from going into the valley! Life on this
side of glory will be at times very trying, even
discouraging; the encouragement for each of us is
that He will be with us regardless.
Without getting into a longer discussion
about the causes of depression, it is enough to
know it is driven primarily by stressors (real or
perceived) that we find overwhelming us.
We must search for and seek resolve to those
sources of stress. The good news is that
depression is not only treatable, it is curable.
However, without help in this area those of
the family of God can descend innoxiously
downward in a spiral that leads to more and more
despair, despondency, and eventually
hopelessness. The descent is so subtle
sometimes one does not even realize just how far
they gone. At this point there is danger and
serious harm may occur. If you, or one of your
loved ones, are showing signs like this, please get
them to someone who can assist them in their
journey out of that dark and dreary place.
The way out of depression caused by guilt is
confession and seeking God's forgiveness. Again
in Psalms 32:5 it says, “Then I acknowledged my
sin to you and did not cover up my iniquity. I said,
“I will confess my transgressions to the LORD” —
and forgive the guilt of my sin.”
In addition, we have a dear promise as
believers in 1 John 1:9, “If I confess my sin. He is
faithful and just to forgive me of my sin and
cleanse me from all unrighteousness.” Notice that
it does not say, 'this one, or that one, it says ALL
and all means all!
Psalm 32 goes on further to point out,
“Blessed is he whose transgressions are forgiven,
whose sins are covered. Blessed is the man
whose sin the LORD does not count against him
and in whose spirit is no deceit. . . . Rejoice in the
LORD and be glad, you righteous; sing all you who
are upright in heart.”
We may experience some other difficult
circumstances, but as believers we can take
action and possibly avoid the deep pit. The
Apostle Paul posits in his second letter to the
Corinthians: “We are hard pressed on every side,
but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair;
persecuted, but not ashamed; struck down, but
not destroyed. We do not lose heart. Through
outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we
are being renewed day by day. For our light and
momentary troubles are achieving for us an
internal glory that far outweighs them all. So we
fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is
unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is
unseen is eternal.”
What if a survey was taken at
your job? Would your co-workers
say you are a blessing to be
around? Do you help your coworkers
when needed, or do you
refuse to help them so that you can
maintain a sense of professional
superiority? Are you a source of
d r a m a i n y o u r p l a c e o f
employment? Or do you bring a
calming presence? Do you conduct
yourself in a professional manner
and possess a spirit of excellence?
Or do you just perform your job at
the minimum level until it’s time to go
home, and then leave five minutes
before your scheduled time to get off
work?
These are some of the
questions that we need to ask
ourselves if we are to be a good
witness for Jesus Christ in the
workplace.
Think about these questions:
Do your try to make the most of your
time at work? Or do you waste a lot
of time surfing the Web and doing
personal tasks that have nothing to
do with your job?
Do you do your best to
conserve the resources at your
workplace? Or do you — on a
regular basis — take home pens,
pencils, pads and rubber bands for
your own personal use?
Even though your employer
may not be aware of your behavior,
our God sees everything. He
expects us to do our jobs as if we are
working for Him (Colossians 3:23). If
we steal from our employer by not
giving our full eight hours, it’s like we
are stealing from God. When we
take home office supplies, we are
stealing from God. As Malachi 3:8
says, “Will a man rob God?” When
we steal from our employer, know
that God takes it personally.
Try this one on for size: Do you
get along with your co-workers by
applying the principles of God’s
Word to your relationships in the
workplace?
I remember the time, when I
was a teacher at a local high school,
that I privately confronted the
principal about his excessive use of
profanity in our staff meetings. He
cursed me out and told me he did
not care about my being a Christian.
After that, I decided to apply the
Word to the situation.
The Word says we are to love,
bless, pray for, and do good to those
we call our enemies (Matthew 5:43-
44). I went back to my empty
classroom, prayed for the principal
then and there, and asked God to
cleanse me of any offense. The next
morning, I greeted him with a smile
as if nothing ever happened. I killed
him with kindness in the weeks to
come. I bought him a gift certificate to
his favorite restaurant as a Christmas
present.
The cursing at the staff meetings
stopped. By the end of the year, after
I finished my contract, I told him I was
not returning next year, and he said
that he was sad that I was leaving.
There is a lesson in that anecdote:
The Word works.
The American dollar reads, "In
God We Trust." But do we?
Our ancestors did. They risked
their lives for what they stood for. They
understood the value of trusting and
believing in God and the Bible.
The Bible became the court's
handbook, and was one of the
absolutes that gave them faith and
courage. It was the foundation and
cornerstone from which they structured
the Constitution and built our
prosperous society.
They were aware that money
could become our god, so they printed
those words as a reminder. Our lives
and country will continue to flourish if
we keep ourselves committed to God
and His principles.
Has America flourished? Yes
indeed. Are we still flourishing? Yes, but
it's on shaky grounds. Why? Because
we trust in money rather than in God.
Why will trusting in money take us
down?
First, a heart without the fear of
God has no control from within, and will
become self-willed and rebellious.
Without the fear of God, societies
become self-righteous. They will
c o m p a r e t h e m s e l v e s a m o n g
themselves, and justify their actions.
Money, rather than God, then becomes
the standard by which we value
ourselves, and it will take us down.
The Soviet Union tried it and failed
miserably - and so will any society that
rejects God's law as their standard. If
we want to flourish, we must believe.
and trust in God, and see money only as
a bi-product of certain values and a
medium of exchange.
Second, without trusting God and
establishing right morals and values,
our money will go through our pockets
as if they had holes. Without God's laws
for governing we become unbalanced.
We become wasteful and lose our
sense of productivity, then we want to
raise taxes rather than plug the holes in
our pockets.
What does it mean to trust God? It
does not mean that we stop planning
and working toward our dreams.
Trusting in God should not make us
passive and lazy. It means we rely on
and believe in God to the extent that we
pattern our lives and businesses
around His values. Trust means to
count on or have confidence in. Trust
comes from experiencing and knowing
someone. We can't buy or demand it; it
is earned.
When we experience and get to
know God, we will find Him faithful, allknowing,
honest, and reliable. So we
put our confidence in Him and pattern
our lives after His law and values, which
will give us the good life.
When we trust in money, it is
temporal and perishable. God's laws
are fixed and can be trusted. They are
everlasting; heaven and earth will pass
away before His law does.
Trust in God causes us to live by
the rules that bring prosperity, but trust
in money will cause us to become
greedy and out of balance, which
destroys our character.
By Ron McKinney
The probability of needing Long
Term Care is pretty staggering, in fact,
two out of five Americans over 65 will
need LTC. If you are married, you
need to consider the cost in providing
peace of mine and care in your golden
years. You want only the best for your
spouse … excellent care should they
need it, or freedom from the financial
burdens should it be you who needs
the care. Statistics are indicating that
seven out of ten couples can expect
one spouse will need LTC. The older
we get the greater our chances of
using long term care.
Nursing Home stays in the
Tidewater area average about $
57,500 a year. The average stay in a
nursing home is just under 3 years.
These costs are increasing more
quickly than the national inflation rate
due to legislation requirements and
medical advancements for the needed
care. Most of us will want to stay in our
home as long as possible before going
to a nursing home. Home health care,
a part of LTC, is also costly, as high as
$20,000 a year depending on the
professional level of care
There is a need, what options are
available? Public programs are a
possibility and many people believe
Medicare will cover LTC. Medicare
helps only after a hospital visit for
rehabilitation period. After 22 days,
Medicare no longer provides
coverage. Medicaid will assist
someone, but your assets must be
below the state's poverty level. If
accepted they will send you to a
facility, but it could be across your state
where there is a Medicaid bed
available.
choice.
You have no personal
again that two out of five American
over 65 will need long term care.
There are four basic areas to be
considered when looking for LTC
Insurance?
Monthly Benefit: The dollar amount
to be paid per month. This can range
from $1,500 to $12,000.
Benefit Multiplier: The number of
years the plan will pay. From 2 years
up to unlimited.
Elimination Period: A waiting
period before coverage begins.
Normally 30, 60, 90, 180 days, but it
can go to 1 year.
Inflation protection: A rider that
increases the Monthly benefit to help
keep pace with inflation.
What you choose for these figures
will be the basis for the premium for the
coverage. Keep in mind that LTC
Insurance is a form of health
insurance. Your health and age will
There are numerous
also be considered when computing
the premium. The younger you are,
and the healthier you are, the more
affordable LTC becomes. Investigate
your personal options with LTC now.
The longer you wait, the more
expensive it will become.
Most of us would think of Friends
and Family for Support. At first this is a
good solution, but as time goes on
people realize that this can be a full
time job.
physical, financial, emotional and
geographical requirements that make
this an unrealistic option over time.
LTC insurance is the best option.
Compared to other insurances we
have, we will use LTC. We all have
automobile insurance and the chances
of having a claim is 1 in 100. Our home
owners insurance chances of having a
claim is 1 in 1000. We would not think
of not having this coverage. Consider
