SECONDARY GRADING CHANGES Background Information A committee was established in November 2010 with the goal of reviewing current grading policy and practices, developing specific guidelines (principles) for fair and effective grading (make recommendations to Instructional Council), creating a gradual phase-in of a policy – develop a timeline, and proposing a district-wide secondary level grading practices. The purpose of grading is: • To encourage student growth • To reflect on student knowledge – to know what students know • To reflect on the effectiveness of educator practice and programs • To communicate student achievement ( for students, parents, educators, colleges & universities) • To progress monitor by providing accurate reflections and feedback on student progress (for students, parents, and other stakeholders) The below answers to frequently asked questions will be updated periodically over the summer. What’s changing for the 2013-2014 school year? Current U-46 Grading Scales for Middle & High Schools 100-90 A 89-80 B 79-70 C 69-60 D 59 and below E Scales Middle and High Schools May Choose From for 2013/2014: 0-5 Scale 50-100 Scale 5 A+ 100-90 A 4 A 89-80 B 3 B 79-70 C 2 C 69-60 D 1 D 59-50 E 0 E Under the new scale, a passing grade is still a passing grade (60% or higher), and a failing grade is still a failing grade (59% or below).
