Dear Readers and Colleagues,
We are proud to present our new releases for the autumn of 2013 under our new name, AMBRA VERLAG.
We hope you find our list of publications as good as we do!
About AMBRA VERLAG
AMBRA | V is the result of the takeover of the Architecture, Art and Culture division from Springer Verlag by
Medecco Holding. The team you know, consisting of Angela Fössl, Mag. Angelika Heller, Tanja Szabo und myself
shall continue to be in charge of making the publishing ideas of our editors and authors a reality with the same
high quality and worldwide distribution services.
With AMBRA, we would like to continue along the path that has proven so successful to date, while also keeping
an eye on the possible innovations our new publishing house offers for our work.
Modern Construction Envelopes
The second edition of the popular textbook on building shells by Andrew Watts, the London-based façade
specialist (www.newtechnic.com) is due to be released this fall. The book has been updated and received a new,
crisp layout in line with that of the recently published third edition of the Modern Construction Handbook.
Dense Atmosphere
There has been a lack of actual construction density values and insights when it comes to creating the most
pleasant living spaces possible until now. The new volume on this subject by Dietmar Eberle (ETH) and Eberhard
Tröger was conceived to address this need. It is of inestimable value as a planning aid for our cities, which are
increasingly becoming the preferred sites for our planet’s population.
I wish you great success with our list of new releases for the upcoming autumn season and enjoy reading our
catalogue for starters!
All the best,
The city and its density: a quality of life indicator
solche Lage zieht, sucht ganz bestimmte Qualitäten.
Umgebung. Vor diesem Hintergrund entwickelte Ebenezer
Howard am Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts die Idee der Gartenstadt.
Vom industriell besonders belasteten Grossbrittannien ausgehend
Urban density defines the quality of life
The first comprehensive study: from the
outskirts of cities to their centers
Photo-documentation and schematic
figure-ground diagram renderings for
visualization purposes
Die durchgrünten Stadterweiterungen ergänzten eher fragmentarisch
und pragmatisch die bestehende Stadt. Entweder
grob in zwei verschiedene Katagorien unterscheiden. Einerseits
drängten schon früh wohlhabende Bürger in landschaftlich
Jahrhunderts
besonders wichtige Selbstversorgung sichern.
22 23
In view of progressive landscape use and
the growing flow of traffic, the discussion
of the reasonable degree of construction
density is becoming increasingly heated.
Actual values and insights on which form
of development creates the most pleasant
living spaces are still missing. This book
offers a thorough study of the relationship
between the characteristics of construction
density and the ensuing atmospheres,
distribution of uses and their value. 36 case
study examples in Zurich, Vienna, Munich
and Berlin were documented and assessed,
from the outskirts to the center of the city
with photographs and detailed map material
according to nine (9) density categories
that take public space into account. This
leads to a unique compendium on the character
of Central European urban spaces!
the first book on Ibos – Vitart
One of the most interesting, emerging
Lean and sustainable architectural and
urban design
Beautifully designed book by Ruedi Baur
Ibos-Vitart stands among the most amazing
architecture offices in France and
among the few who have an international
following. Jean Marc Ibos and Myrto Vitart
started their career working with the office
of Jean Nouvel, where they were in charge
with some of his key projects. Soon after
they left Nouvel, their first major work, the
extension and remodeling of Lille Fine Art
Museum, won the l’Equerre d’argent,
a prestigious award in France. Their design
is the result of a deliberately restrained
attitude. It is rooted in their profound
consciousness of the responsibility of the
architect in society. Delivering lasting buildings,
that value and enrich a place while
serving present and future users and inhabitants
is their goal.This book documents
15 projects extensively – and was designed
by Ruedi Baur.
Monograph on a young Austrian architecture
office from Salzburg
23 realized buildings
Office structures, remodelling of existing
historical buildings, single-family housing ...
LP architektur has created a richly varied
body of work in the ten years it has existed.
The office’s breakthrough came at the 2006
Winter Oympics in Turin with the emblematic
Austria House, in which Tom Lechner,
the LP managing partner blended tradition
with modernity. LP Architektur has won a
number of Austrian architecture awards
since then. In an area defined by turbotourism,
the Salzburg office’s buildings
have become beacons of regional identity
that now reach beyond the borders of
Salzburg. LP architektur sees its designs
as psychograms that are the reflections of
the individual desires and dreams of their
clients. This selection of 23 buildings complements
the works presented in the first
monograph published in 2006 and shows
how broad the spectrum of the architect’s
work has become in the meantime.

The second edition of Modern Construction
the two books by Andrew Watts, Modern
Construction Roofs and Modern Construction
Facades . Both volumes were gathered
into one single volume and consolidated in
terms of content, which permits the consideration
of facades and roofs as envelopes.
Using current examples by renowned architects,
Watts presents the constructive and
material-related details. This presentation
is based on a text, photos, and standardized
of the components. The new edition
has 3D views that are easier to understand
than the first edition, with sharper images
and more key explanations.

An inspiring expansion of the contemporary
discourse on space
A2— ALFREDO BRILLEMBOURG & HUBERT KLUMPNER
GRAN HORIZONTE: CURRICULUM FOR A NEW CITY
closely. In the favelas, the bulk of the population is disadvantaged
in one way or another. The lives of children with autism
or Down’s syndrome are particularly difficult, as few public
and private spaces are designed or adapted to fit their needs.
In locating the school for autistic children, known as FAVA, on
a sloping site, it was important for us to leave open as large an
area as possible for a park, which is something rare in the center
of the city. Therefore, we designed the building as a compact
volume and set it in one corner of the site. As a result,
the spatial program extended to a five-story structure. In Caracas,
however, lifts are service-intensive installations and would
make a building of this kind unsuitable for the students, many
of whom experience increased anxiety in elevators. Our solution
was to build a long ramp around the outside of the building.
Access to the first two floors is via the sloped topography.
The development was financed from a new tax conceived to
flow into structures with a social role. Companies can donate
up to 100 percent of their annual tax to finance such schemes.
We work in a complex environment that calls for simple
solutions. That means using available local materials and labor.
Most people believe that low-cost construction must be inferior
to expensive forms of building. We wish to overcome prejudices
of this kind as well as outdated ideas regarding how a
project should be developed. Only if we shift our expectations
away from a product, to a process, and reconsider traditional
development strategies, will we be able to find economically
feasible solutions for the masses of people in the slums. And
only if we do that will we have vibrant cities for every stratum
of society that lives in them. Looking at our Earth as a whole,
we find a new vision for our urban planet, and for all of us who
live within it.○
As the subject of earnest discussion, the
meaning of space reaches far beyond the
horizon of a single discipline. Lukas Feiriss
has assembled a collection of international
contributions for Space Matters, a publication
of the space & design strategies study
of the contemporary discourse on
space. The publication addresses cultural
resarchers and readers in creative professions
– architects, artists, curators, scientists
and students in all the related fields
as well as those members of a broader
audience that are interested in the incorporation
of space and the pratices with
which it is designed in cultural, social and
humanities-oriented contexts.
What is the architect doing in the jungle?
How can architects and natural scientists
immerse themselves in a fruitful dialogue to
generate new insights for cross-disciplinary
innovation? This volume contributes to the
current discussion of arts-based research
with the interdisciplinary research project
BiornaMetics – Architecture Defined By
Natural Patterns. Biornametics is an emerging
contemporary design practice which
explores a new methodology that interconnects
scientific evidence with creative
design in the field of architecture. The word
biornametics is generated from “ornament”,
referring to the famous Austrian architect
Adolf Loos, and biomimetics. It concentrates
on the detection of the principles
behind processes of emerging and dissolving
patterns in animate and inanimate
nature. Reflections on the architectural direction
of Biornametics, issues of arts and
science collaboration, and the application
of the methodology show a diverse world of
thoughts and approaches to the topic.
Contributions by internationally recognized
experts from different specialized fields
such as architecture, art, philosophy and
biology
“The Power of Design” provides a compact
introduction to the current eleven UNESCO
Cities of Design. Each individual city is
briefly portrayed with important statistical
information and detailed facts relating to
its development of design. The highly varied
approaches of the individual cities in their
use of design as an engine for current and
future development are then described in
more detail through concrete and well
illustrated examples. In addition, there are
interviews with designers, activists, organizers
and critical observers, which the
author conducted either during his travels
or through extensive correspondence. The
result is a richly illustrated and handy book
which combines hard facts with personal
impressions and points of view.
Art in Public Spaces in Styria
Fourth and final volume in the Art in Public
Timeline of the development from art in
construction to art in public spaces since
1930
Features around 30 contributions by
Marlene Streeruwitz, Werner Fenz and
Public Think Tank, among others
The fourth and last volume of the series of
publications of the Institute for Art in Public
Spaces in Styria, 2006–2011, focuses on the
perspectives for the future of art in public
spaces. Experts from arts, literature and
theory address the meaning and possibilities
of art in public spaces in the society of
today and tomorrow. International initiatives
and the different approaches they
employ in their support for art in pubic
spaces is another central theme of the
book. 24 projects that were realized as art
in public space in Styria in 2011 are documented
with a variety of images and text
contributions. For the first time, a timeline
traces the development from art in construction
to art in public spaces in Styria
since the 1930s to facilitate the understanding
of this complex topic.
The period between 1970 and 1979 led to
far-reaching social change in Austria, the
themes and positions of which were reflected
in the currents that influenced the
contemporary art of the time. The effects of
the Realities exhibition held at the Viennese
Secession in 1968 were still being felt at the
beginning of the new decade. The influence
of actionism also faded, whereas art with a
feminist orientation gradually took center
stage in the public’s interest. Artists used
photography and video for their work, which
also showed a performative dimension.
“New media” successfully emerged in an
artistic context during the 1970s. Towards
the end of the decade, the art of figuration
and ingenious gestures experiences a
revival. The individual catalog contributions
bring light to the development of the collection,
the political culture and the cultural
artist, who died in Australia in 2009. Born in
Vienna in 1943, he left school at the age of
15 to become an artist. During the sixties he
captivated the art scene with his unconventional
paintings and world of music as the
co-founder of the avant-garde “Masters of
covers his complete works as a painter.
One of the high points of his creative output
was the monumental painting, “The Big
An outline of an epistemology for cultural work
chapter i
course about private and public virtue” (Ibid.). If we assume that cultural
work might be on the verge of a new period of intellectual and educational
accomplishment, a number of issues such as human excellence
and a new ecological-cosmopolitical understanding (Sloterdijk 2010:37)
of what we do and how we act pose fundamental challenges for the
post-industrial cultural workplace. In order to create an awareness of the
consequences of our behaviour, as well as to contribute to more sustainable
foundations for a global society and culture, 20 the particular challenge
lies in developing a new compass that could help us to shift values,
“reprogram” our destructive pursuits, and rethink accumulated habits and
collective aspirations, as Reto Ringger suggests (2009:20). 21 However, the
underlying question regarding the future of social, economic and ethical
practices is whether the imperatives of globalised consumer culture
and the forces of commodification and marketization—to which the production
and dissemination of knowledge are vulnerable—have rendered
the world incontestable. 22 Different authors have problematised these
issues from social, economic, political and ecological perspectives (for
example, Altvater 2007; Capra 2002; Castells 2000; Gibbons et al. 1994;
Horkheimer and Adorno 1947). While some have suggested “remoralising”
social, economic and educational practices in the “search for place”
(Banks 2007:145), others have called for future paths towards a renewed
ethic of civic virtue.
20 I do not attempt to provide much elaboration on the term culture, which, especially in recent
years, has undergone yet more transformations of meaning. I use the term in a broader sense to
refer to ways of life, the arts, the media, political, educational and religious culture, and attitudes
to globalization. For the purpose of this book, I suggest that culture, as it is expressed in the arts,
literature, film, and different practices of mediation and representation, draws from and participates
in the construction of culture as a system of human values, beliefs and behaviours.
21 Ringger is a Swiss pioneer of the concept of sustainability investments.
22 Banks notes: “Yet, even now, ongoing transformations in the structure of capitalism appear to
provide cultural industries with the opportunity to obtain even greater shares of wealth, power, and
control (...) [T]he social and economic impacts of globalization now appear to have exacerbated the
scale and scope of the cultural ‘standardization, commercialization, and rigidification’ that Adorno
(...) first identified in the high-modern period” (2007:25). In an essay published after his death,
Adorno in fact reiterated that the “entire practice of the culture industry transfers the profit motive
naked onto cultural forms” (1981; 1991:99), thus anticipating the commercial control of all kinds of
social practices that we can observe today.
The Fragmentation of the Humanities and Arts
Introduction
Since World War II research and education have focused overwhelmingly
on science and technology, which has resulted in the marginalization
of the humanities with negative repercussions for both knowledge
and the human community. While the humanities appear to play an ambi-
Fig. 1.1
valent role in modern culture, their intellectual values are at the same time
formed by the social context in which they evolve and are practised, and,
according to Gibbons et al., thus become entangled in markets in a “more
diffuse sense” (1994:91). Formally and academically, the humanities represent
our usual human activities as well as the meaning and values that we
construct in different ways by looking at the world and thinking about life.
Yet, the work of the humanities and the knowledge which they involve are
not one particular thing. Their outcomes and the many forms of knowledge
that they provide are all around us and present in our daily lives. They are
the newspaper we read, the news we watch on television, or the exhibition
we visit in the local art museum. Whether we watch an episode of
Star Trek, read Stefan Zweig’s biography of Marie Antoinette, listen to the
Ritual Orchestra and Chants of the Khampagar Buddhist Monastery, or visit
San Francisco’s Exploratorium, these activities are all part of the humanities.
The humanities are always a manner of commitment that embraces human
knowledge with a central concern for human beings and our self-conscious
awareness of how we know, what we know and how we act. In short, the
Cultural work and knowledge are central
topics of this book
In-depth inquiries into the practices, nature
and theory of postindustrial cultural work
and the humanities
Epistemological, ecological, ethical and
political dimensions of cultural work
2 3
The book conducts in-depth inquiries into
the practices, nature and theory of postindustrial
cultural work and the humanities –
and arts – based civic dialogues which cultural
work promotes. The aim of the book is
to outline an epistemology for cultural work
as well as to reflect upon the prospects for
educational cultural work practices.
A major focus of the book is on the epistemological,
ecological, ethical and political
dimensions of cultural work. This includes
the prospects for a new form of communal
workspace for knowledge and cultural
learning. Cultural work and knowledge are
the central topics of this book.
