WHO IS ELIGIBLE?<br />
•3 Years of K-12 teaching experience<br />
•Access to at least 6 students in the area in which<br />
you are attempting certification<br />
•License to teach in the state<br />
•Possess a baccalaureate degree from an accredited<br />
institution.
WHAT SUPPORT DOES WESTERN<br />
OFFER?<br />
• Ten or more cohort meetings with an experienced mentor<br />
from September through May.<br />
• Small cohorts offer individualized support. Facilitators<br />
provide feedback on written entries and videos,<br />
organization, assessment center help, and retake support .<br />
• No additional fees charged for retake support.

FEES AND FINANCIAL SUPPORT<br />

• Application fee -- $65<br />
• Initial fee -- $500 Program materials sent to candidate<br />
• Full payment of remaining $2,000 due January 31 st , 2012<br />
(with Extended Payment Plan due March 31 st , 2012)<br />
To <strong>Western</strong> <strong>Washington</strong> <strong>University</strong>:<br />
• $575 fee for facilitated support due September 17, 2011<br />
OSPI offers conditional loan of $2000 for beginning the NB<br />
process
WHY DO IT?<br />
…significant, measurable, positive impact on student learning and<br />
teacher performance<br />
• Financial reward: historically a $5,000 annual bonus, increases<br />
annually with inflation (subject to 2011-13 biennial budget);<br />
factors into retirement<br />
• Additional $5,000 bonus for NBCTs who work in high -needs<br />
schools with a set % of students receive free/reduced lunch<br />
• Clock Hours 45 after 10 entries complete<br />
plus 45 more when you pass<br />
• Professional Certificate granted<br />
• Transferable certificate 42 out of 50 states
UPDATE ON BONUS FUNDING<br />
FROM OSPI<br />
OSPI wishes to make it clear that, even after the Governor’s cuts,<br />
there is still some funding available to pay bonuses. OSPI will<br />
advocate for NBCT funding to be provided and believes that<br />
Legislators will be supportive. Legislators are is special session to<br />
determine the amount of the bonus.
EXPECTATIONS: CANDIDATES<br />
Candidates will…<br />
• Attend and participate in cohort sessions<br />
Failure to do that may jeopardize a candidate’s<br />
scholarship or conditional loan<br />
• Have sole responsibility for all portfolio contents<br />
• Be supportive of other candidates<br />
• Not use another NBCT’s portfolio<br />
• Avoid evaluative statements about other’s entries<br />
• Submit four portfolio entries and complete the<br />
Assessment Center exercises
EXPECTATIONS: FACILITATORS<br />
Facilitators will…<br />
• share insights about the process and help<br />
candidates identify clear, convincing,<br />
consistent evidence<br />
• highlight key tasks and monitor milestones to<br />
help candidates stay on schedule<br />
• Guide – but stay neutral.<br />
Facilitators are not reviewers and are not<br />
qualified to know how an entry will be scored<br />
• Not write or rewrite any part of any entry

• …ask a NBC teacher what their qualifying score was<br />
• …include part of another’s entry as part of their own materials<br />

enough to “pass”<br />
• …enlist the assistance of colleagues to develop the content of<br />

• …create conceptual lessons and results that show that the<br />
candidates understands the teaching/learning process without<br />
needing to actually implement the plan<br />
• …give, ask for, or receive information on secure assessment<br />
materials or information<br />
• …share, publish, electronically post or otherwise reproduce<br />

THREE TYPES OF WRITING REQUIRED<br />
Descriptive: Descriptive writing is a retelling of what<br />
happened in a classroom situation.<br />
Analytic: Interpretations the teacher made of what<br />
happened, examination of why the elements or<br />
events described are the way they are.<br />
Reflective: A particular kind of analysis, always<br />
suggests self-analysis, or consideration of practice.<br />
Reflection includes written consideration of what a<br />
teacher will do next based on his/her analysis of<br />
what happened.
