want are Trichocentrum (some), Sigmatostalix
(now Oncidium – some), Erycina (including
Psygmorchis – all), Capanemia (all), Macroclinium
(all), Psychopsiella, Ornithocephalus,
Chytroglossa, Zygostates (most), Telipogon
(many) and Trichoceros (most).
The huge pantropical genus Bulbophyllum, definitely one of the
largest genera of orchids, and possibly of all plants, has more than
a thousand species of which hundreds are miniatures. We illustrate
two Cirrhopetalum group species, B. pecten-veneris and B. frostii,
as well as the distantly related B. pardolotum and B. weinthalii. A
wonderful related genus is Trias with several species.
Again a New World group, the Zygopetalinae has a relatively low
percentage of miniature species, but one genus of which is truly
charming, Promenaea. All approximately 20 species are miniatures
that come from the Atlantic Rainforest of southeastern Brazil. Other
lovely genera include Stenia and Kefersteinia, both of which have
some real gems.
The Maxillariinae is a huge
group of Neotropical plants, with
the large genus Maxillaria and its
segregates comprising the vast
majority of species. Of these we
introduce you to Maxillaria
huancabambae, Ornithidium
sophronitis, and Christensonella
