The History of the
Human-Animal Bond
Mark Goldstein, D.V.M.
President of the San Diego
Humane Society and SPCA
with his dog Ren.
As we enter a new year and many of us reflect on where we have been and where we are going, I would like to
share with you a topic that is very important to me: the human-animal bond. This bond is represented by the
unconditional love we receive from our pets and the love and care we provide them in return. Our relationship
with animals can be traced back over 15,000 years to the domestication of the dog, who served first as our hunt and
workmates, then as protectors, service animals and finally as our companions and family members.
As I write this message, the Chinese New Year will start off 2006 as the “Year of the Dog.” The dedication of this
year to canines exemplifies how the human-animal bond crosses geographical, cultural and generational boundaries.
In fact, many of us learned our first lessons about life from Aesops fables, Mother Goose Rhymes and stories like Black
Beauty and Lassie. Through their behavior, animals teach us about patience, love and compassion and in turn we
become better human beings. This process is exemplified in the evolution of the treatment of dogs: they went from
being chained outside, to being allowed as our companions into the garage and living room and then eventually to
competing with us for space in our beds. It is during this time as our cherished pets that the notion of the humananimal
bond has truly grown and transformed into what it is today. Of course, this bond is not limited to our canine
companions, but also includes cats, small animals and other pets, who were domesticated more recently than their
canine cousins.
The depth and breadth of the bond between people and pets can be seen by the recent trend in spending on our
pets’ needs and desires in the form of toys, clothing, bedding, training, etc., and in the celebration of their lives
through birthday parties, pet photography and even in memorials.
In 1943 psychologist Abraham Maslow proposed that living beings have a “hierarchy of needs,” beginning with the
most important physiological needs: food, water and shelter. For our pets, and ourselves, I would argue that other
basic needs also include quality medical care and love. It is our responsibility as part of the human-animal bond to
provide these needs to our pets.
Our animal friends deserve to have their medical needs met with proper nutrition, daily exercise, and veterinary
care that often extends beyond basic vaccinations. And as you’ll see in this issue’s cover story, the San Diego Humane
Society concurs that pets deserve quality care. We ensure that all of our animals receive exceptional care and perform
advanced veterinary procedures when needed.
As you can see, the human-animal bond that we share with our pets has taken thousands of years to develop into
the wonderful and diverse form in which we experience it today. To everyone who has ever loved an animal, you can
understand why our mission at the San Diego Humane Society is to enhance this bond in our community.
Finally, I would like to invite you to witness how our organization works to promote this bond during our 9 th
Annual Telethon, which airs live on March 4 from noon to 5 p.m. on FOX Channel 6. We will be highlighting many
stories of people who have developed this bond with a Society pet and how all our programs and services enhance
the person-pet relationship. I hope you will join us and want to thank and remind you that we cannot provide these
services without your support.
Dear Humane Society,
I wanted to send some updated photos of
my two kitties that I adopted from you, now
named Compay and Alfie. They are wonderful
cats and we love them, but boy do they get into
trouble sometimes! Thank you again for all
your help in adopting our beloved boys.
Take care,
We wanted to let you know how Hopper
is doing. He’s a very happy boy who loves to
sleep in-between us every night (if we don’t
let him, he’ll cry). We take him to the beach
almost every day and he loves everyone he
meets. Thank you so much for helping us
find our best friend!
I adopted Squeekers (now Snickerdoodles) from the Humane Society in
November. She was sick when she was brought to you, but she is now much
better. She and our first guinea pig, Oreo, have become best friends and her fur is
now soft and shiny. She is quite a little character; very “nosy” and always checking
out everything that is going on. Thank you for all the wonderful care and love that
you gave Snickerdoodles - she shows us each day how happy she is to be alive and
with us in our home.
Thanks again,
“
Bring me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses…”
though this phrase adorns the pedestal of one of our nation’s
monuments, it might well be the mantra for the San Diego
Humane Society and SPCA’s medical staff who are always up to treating
veterinary challenges.
Dr. Katie Kangas works on the teeth of Rascal
the rabbit. Many rabbits need regular dental
care, including cleanings, extractions and tooth
trimmings, and this is just one of the many
procedures Humane Society veterinarians
perform to keep pets at their healthiest.
c o v e r s t o r y
Each day, this dynamic team of a
dozen staffers (veterinarians, technicians,
and assistants) sees and treats pets of
different species, ages, and suffering
from a variety of medical conditions.
From basic spay and neuters to special
surgeries and advanced diagnostics, the
Humane Society provides quality and
thorough medical care for all its animals.
And it’s a good thing, especially for
Keeza, who recently received knee
surgery for torn ligaments. Keeza is a
five-year-old female German Shepherd
who was relinquished to the Humane
Society with a limp. Upon examination
and X-rays, the Medical Department
discovered she had been suffering from
her injury for a significant amount of
time.
“It’s exciting and challenging,” said
Dr. Katie Kangas, Humane Society Sr.
Veterinarian. “Now we’re able to provide
more specialized care for the animals
that come to us. In the past, there was
very little we could do for pets like Keeza.
With the expansion of the department
and the additional equipment, we can
offer a much higher level of care.”
This Department, whose staff and
caseload has tripled since the Humane
Society moved to its Gaines Street
location in 2003, sees over 7,000 pet
patients per year. In addition to full
medical examinations, vaccinations
and micro-chipping for all Humane
Society animals, all dogs and cats over
the age of seven receive a full blood panel
analysis. The Veterinary Medicine
Department also routinely performs dental
cleanings and extractions, digital x-rays,
ultrasounds, blood pressure monitoring
and urinalysis. They also can diagnose
and treat animals with allergies, heart
problems, and orthopedic conditions. Last
year, the Department provided specialty
surgeries or medical treatments (not
including spay/neuter) for approximately
40 percent of the animals they examined.
After her knee surgery Keeza will have
a recovery period at the Humane Society
of three to fours weeks and then be made
available for adoption. She will also go
home with a set of physical therapy
exercises that her new pet parents can
use to help build the strength in her knee.
The Department’s 2,300 square foot
clinic includes a pharmacy, evaluation and
treatment areas, isolation ward, surgery
suite, and recovery room. Additionally,
animals that have medical conditions
that can’t be corrected at the Humane
Society, are often sent to outside specialty
hospitals so they can be treated and made
ready for adoption.
“It’s a major accomplishment that we
have such great relationships with San
Diego specialists, including the doctors at
Mission Valley VCA Hospital, Veterinary
Specialty Hospital of San Diego and
South Coast Veterinary Imaging,” Diane
Tally, Humane Society Hospital Manager
said. “They will often perform procedures
that we can’t, due to lack of resources or
equipment, for a highly reduced fee.”
For example, thanks to the generosity
of the community and these specialists,
animals that have been hit by a car or
who have suffered abuse can now receive
the surgeries they need to start their lives
over again. Initial diagnoses and X-rays
can be done on-site at the Humane
Society and then the pet may be sent to
Photo: Simran Zilaro
a specialist to complete the treatment.
“We spend a lot of time on pain
management with our animals. It’s been
shown that if you can stop pain before it
starts, as opposed to providing medication
after the fact, animals remain a lot more
comfortable and happy after the surgery,”
remarked Dr. Kangas. “In fact, that is
why all the animals we prep for surgery
receive pain medication both before and
after their operations.”
With the growth in staff, the
Veterinary Medicine Department has also
increased its capability to treat small and
exotic animals. Guinea pigs, parakeets
and iguanas can all be found gracing the
halls of the Medical Department to be
examined and treated prior to their
adoptions. The most common medical
problems for these animals show up in
the form of skin conditions and mites.
“We also no longer focus soley on ‘herd
health’,” Kangas continued. “Of course
any shelter has to worry about contagious
diseases, which is helped by our isolation
wards and air filtration systems, but we’re
now able to provide more individualized
healthcare for these pets which means we
can adopt out healthier animals.”
Shedding A New Light On Shelter Medicine (continued from page 5)
Dr. Jim Babbitt scrubs his hands before
Keeza’s surgery. The sterilization of the surgery
environment, including the surgeon’s hands, is
paramount to reducing infections in patients.
Additionally, relaying and explaining
an animal’s medical history to a potential
adopter is just as important as the actual
medical treatment. A consultation with a
Humane Society veterinarian is a required
part of the adoption process for any pet
that has a medical condition, special needs
or that underwent a significant treatment
while in Humane Society care. Last year
the Medical Department held 358 medical
consultations with potential adopters.
Photo: Simran Zilaro
“We are dedicated to providing as
much pet medical history as we can to
the public. These consultations are vital
because they give potential adopters an
idea of what they are getting into,”
said Dr. Jim Babbitt, Humane Society
veterinarian. “We review the pet’s
medical problem and what current or
future care the pet might need. We also
discuss the financial commitment and
the care the pet may require so the future
owners have a full understanding of the
pet’s health when they adopt. The more
information we provide ensures that
adopters have fewer medical surprises
and also helps to guarantee that we have
found the right match for the pet.”
Many wonderful companion animals
like Keeza, that have manageable health
conditions are adopted from the Humane
Society on a daily basis, and thanks to
advances in the Veterinary Medicine
Department these animals have a second
chance at a loving home!
“The days of providing shelter
animals with sub-rate health care are
gone,” remarked Tally, who has worked
for the San Diego Humane Society for
20 years. “We have vastly upgraded our
general medical care, pain management,
and anesthesia procedures so they are
safer and easier on the animals. I am
very proud to work for such an amazing
organization and for what we have
recently accomplished. We’ve gone from
pre-historic to state of the art!”
In fact, the Department has even
participated in several research
studies in conjunction with UC Davis
in the hopes that our findings can help
advance shelter medicine across the
country. Of course, such progress could
not be made without the help of the San
Diego community who is equally as
committed to the health and well-being
of our furry friends!
Thanks to the knee surgery performed by Humane
Society veterinarians, Keeza now has a brighter
and healthier future.
Puppy Peddlers Still Selling Heartbreak
In the summer of 2004 the San Diego
Humane Society and SPCA began
receiving calls from people who bought
sick puppies from peddlers on the streets.
Each caller had a heartbreakingly similar
story about purchasing an adorable “purebred”
puppy in a parking lot, swap meet or
street corner for $300 to $1,000, only to find
a few days later that the puppy was very
ill. Sometimes the puppies lived, but they
often died despite expensive veterinary care
and the seller was always long gone.
After talking with other animal welfare
and control agencies, it became clear
that these incidents were not isolated to a
few sellers or even one region. To combine
resources and information the San Diego
Humane Society and SPCA formed the
Border Puppy Task Force (BPTF) with
14 other California animal welfare and
law enforcement agencies. In December
2005, the BPTF announced the results of a
two-week operation conducted at the Otay
Mesa and San Ysidro ports of entry.
During the two-week study the BPTF
found that 362 puppies under the age
of three months were brought into the
United States from Mexico. While bringing
animals across the border is not illegal,
a majority of these puppies are sick, too
young to be separated from their mothers
and littermates, inhumanely transported
and usually intended for resale.
To combat this problem, a California
state law went into effect January 2006
punishing individuals with a $250
maximum fine or a misdemeanor for
selling puppies who are less than eightweeks-old.
The law is only applicable if
the sale has taken place and the dog has
been transferred to the new owner.
If you or someone you know is
planning on purchasing a pet from
a private party, here are some tips
to keep in mind:
• Think adoption first! There are
many wonderful and healthy
companion animals available
at the San Diego Humane Society
and other area shelters.
• Make sure the animal has been seen
by a veterinarian.
• Be wary of people who sell animals
from a strange or temporary location
(i.e. parking lots, swap meets, etc.).
• Ask questions about the animal’s
history, health, temperament, etc.
• Do not pay cash and ask for a receipt
with legible information, including the
seller’s name, phone number, address
and driver’s license number.
• Ask for a health guarantee and find out
if the animal can be returned
• Don’t make an “impulse purchase”
– unscrupulous sellers rely on people
who don’t think through their decision
when they see an adorable puppy.
• Do not purchase an animal that seems
ill, depressed or lethargic.
“Border Pups” All Grown Up
In 2004 Cathy and Clyde Bacon
adopted former “border puppies”
Margarita and Nacho from the San
Diego Humane Society and SPCA. Both
dogs had struggled for life with various
ailments after inhumane treatment by
puppy peddlers who imported them from
Mexico to the United States for resale.
Over a year later, both dogs are healthy
and except for a minor digestive problem,
have no medical side effects from their
rough beginnings. The dogs are full-time
RV travelers and have driven across the
U.S. with their new owners. Thanks to
the determination of Humane Society
Investigators and Veterinary Department
staff, these dogs are now happy and
healthy, bringing their pet parents joy
every day.
confidence building. And not to worry,
older dogs will learn new skills too!
“Your dog doesn’t have to be a
Border Collie or a Jack Russell
Terrier to benefit from agility,” said
Andrea Ashbaugh, CPDT and Humane
Society Senior Behavior Trainer. “Some
students may go on to competitions, but
what’s more important is how agility
can build the bond between you and
your dog.”
The rapidly growing sport of Dog
Agility demonstrates a dog’s physical
strength as well as his ability to react
and negotiate new and challenging
obstacles. Most importantly, however,
agility training offers dogs and their
Dog Agility can take years, “Agility” will
exciting sport.
The Calm After the Storm: A Hurricane Katrina Follow-Up
Although Hurricane Katrina may be a distant memory
for some, we will never forget how it touched our lives
through the animals that needed our help. In recent
months the Humane Society has continued to help Hurricane
Katrina animals and their families:
Reunion Weekend
On November 12, 2005 the San Diego Humane Society and
SPCA brought four families from across the United States to
San Diego to be reunited with dogs that were brought to San
Diego after the hurricane. The dogs’ displaced owners were
found after hours of dedicated research via the phone and
Internet by Humane Society staff and volunteers. To date the
Society has reunited 16 dogs with their owners.
A New Home for Honey
Certain that they had found the dog they lost during
Hurricane Katrina, a Florida family waited anxiously at the
airport for the arrival of their dog and a San Diego Humane
Society and SPCA staff member. They were soon devastated to
realize that the dog that had made the cross-country trip from
California to Florida was not their missing pet. The dog, a
yellow Chow Chow mix named “Honey,” flew back to the
Humane Society and awaited adoption.
On December 22, 2005 Honey was adopted into her new,
forever home where she is doing well. Her new pet parent
Diana says that Honey is the “perfect companion” and has
adjusted well to her new environment. Diana says that Honey
loves to be brushed and to cuddle on her lap and she is happy to
provide her with a stable, loving home.
Helping Out Our Southern Friends
In addition to reuniting and adopting out animals displaced by
Hurricane Katrina, the Humane Society has began helping Gulf
Coast shelters by bringing their adoptable animals to our Sherman
Street facility for adoption. Residents of these hard-hit areas are
focused on rebuilding their lives and are mostly unable to adopt
pets. As a result, local animal welfare agencies are having a
difficult time with overcrowding. The Humane Society’s Sherman
Street facility will continue to take in animals from the Louisiana
SPCA (along with animals from other county shelters) as long
there is a need to find these animals new homes. Additionally,
the San Diego Humane Society and SPCA will be providing funding
to the Louisiana SPCA and the Humane Society of Southern
Mississippi from remaining Hurricane Katrina funds in an effort
to help them rebuild and return aiding the animals devastated by
this disaster.
Too Young for a Will?
Photo: Tricia Macri
Many people put off writing a
will because they feel they
are not old enough to need
one. They say to themselves, “I’ll take
care of this when I retire.”
Actually, there are several good
reasons for having a will earlier in life.
First, there is the possibility, though
remote, that death could come by
accident or illness. And this means that
having a will makes good sense.
Second, having minor children makes
planning for their care extremely important.
Through a will, you can name
custodians for dependents and trustees
(Please complete and return this reply form.)
of family trusts. You can also designate
guardians for any pets you may have.
Third, though your estate may be
modest, you still have the right (and
obligation) to make your own decisions
regarding the disposition of your assets.
This includes designating bequests, for
organizations like San Diego Humane
Society and SPCA, that reflect your
interests and values.
Fourth, getting your first will in
place while you are younger will make
it easier for you to adjust it later as the
need arises.
Finally, peace of mind is a wonderful
blessing at any age. Having a valid
will in place will give you a sense of
accomplishment and satisfaction. You
will appreciate knowing that you have
cared for one of the most important
responsibilities in life.
your will. For these no-obligation booklets,
A: Thank you for your question, this is the reasons why your dog digs, make
In addition to the
I wish you the best of luck in
A Wedding Celebration Shared with the Animals
On October 22, 2005, Louise
Belisle and John Zettner,
Jr. were married at the
Handlery Hotel & Resort in Mission
Valley. Unlike most newlyweds, they
did not want another toaster, or a set
of satin placemats or even brand new
china plates. They wanted to do something
that honored their marriage in a
truly special way…by giving back to the
causes they loved most.
In lieu of wedding gifts, they asked
their guests to donate to one of two
charities, one being the San Diego
Humane Society and SPCA and the
other being the Children’s Hospital
of San Diego. Louise’s love of animals
(and their two cats) and John’s love
of children were both beautifully
represented on the gift table at their
reception with information about both
worthy organizations. This charitable
act brought in $1,000 to support the
people and animals of San Diego
County and beyond.
The Humane Society feels honored
Louise and John’s two cats Beazer and Bo.
to have been a part of Louise and John’s
grateful we are for their kindhearted
dedication and support.
