tological information, but may result in temporary<br />

suppression <strong>of</strong> spermatogensis.<br />

Epididymes Each epididymis has a head, body and<br />

tail (Fig. 11.4) which are quite closely attached to their<br />

adjacent testis. The two epididymes are normally <strong>of</strong><br />

the same size and consistency. Very occasionally, part<br />

<strong>of</strong> the epididymis becomes detached from the testis.<br />

The organ may become enlarged and painful to the<br />

touch in the presence <strong>of</strong> infection. Each epididymis<br />

should be methodically palpated commencing with<br />

its head, which is usually slightly firmer to the touch<br />

than the tail. The body <strong>of</strong> the epididymis runs<br />

down the medial side <strong>of</strong> the adjacent testis, becoming<br />

quite narrow and difficult to palpate in places. The<br />

tail <strong>of</strong> the epididymis contains the fluid-filled ductus<br />

epididymis which is quite compressible. The epididymes<br />

can be readily assessed ultrasonographi-<br />
