Almost there! How many times have you been on a drive and you

we are happy to report that we are in the final stages of the clinic

great job of keeping on top of the project and pushing it forward. This
is truly a great environment for the residents and they are extremely
appreciative of your support. The current third year class has been
through the transformation and can attest first hand to how much
the new clinic and lab has enhanced their learning experience in the
program.
As we come to the end of another year, we hope that we can count on
your continued support of the Alumni Association and the Department.

Annual Alumni Dues
This mailing represents our annual call for Alumni Dues. Please complete the enclosed remittance
envelope along with your $200 payment to the “Orthodontic Alumni Association of Illinois.” We
would like to again remind you that there are NO administrative costs to the association, and all of
the dues are used to fund alumni activities as well as to support the orthodontic program.
ALL donations collected during this mailing are given directly to Carla and the Department.
The Association provides additional funding for some of renovation expenses and also supporting
departmental activities for the residents. Last year we collected $12,850 in donations which was

This event is just another benefit of membership! The AAO alumni reception was
held at a local restaurant/bar since it was a rare occurrence for the AAO to be
hosted in Chicago. We had alums and guests from all over the world gather
for an evening of food and fun. There were almost 200 people in attendance
representing pretty much every generation of graduates of the Northwestern,
Loyola and the University of Illinois programs. There was a full house until the end.
The atmosphere was great, the food delicious and there were many memories to
catch up on!
We are really excited to get as many people involved and excited about coming
to our gatherings. It’s not only about dentistry but friendship as well. Grab your
friends and colleagues and bring them out to our upcoming Alumni Meeting in
2012!

the Saudi Alumni Association which consists of
graduates from UIC. Over the years we have had
numerous alums return back to their country, but
they have still remained active in supporting the
department and have maintained connected though
fellow alums.

We are in the final stages of the clinic
renovation and are working on furnishing the
new classrooms and administrative offices.
The Brodie Library was completely dismantled
and remodeled with new ceiling tiles, carpet
and refinished cabinets. One of the existing
conference rooms has been refurbished
receiving new flooring, a copper ceiling and

matching wall coverings and has been named
the Graber Gallery in honor of Dr. Tom Graber
who was a faculty member in the Department
from 1994 until he passed away in 2007. The
Ricketts Room has been relocated and had a
makeover of paint, new lighting and flooring.
It will also receive new tables and chairs. This
conference room is the largest and has seating

for 40 to accommodate all residents and faculty
and is the main lecture room for our guest
lecturers. A new faculty area next to the clinic had been designed to have 4
work stations to allow instructors and residents to privately meet to discuss
cases or treatment plans. Finally, four administrative offices including Carla’s
office and a reception area were added.

We are also thankful to faculty member Ashok Kothari (LU ’83) who has also made a generous
donation to help furnish the faculty area. Ashok works 1/2 a day a week in the clinic donating
his time and talent and passion for orthodontics. It should also be mentioned that the
Alumni Association has also provided a significant amount to help fund the completion of this
project. Just another example of how important your membership is helpful in supporting the
Department!
4th Annual Schneider Golf Outing
Special thanks to 3rd year resident Mike Everson, who
organized the 4th annual Schneider Golf Outing at Foss
Park. We had over 20 in attendance including Bernie and

a 3-peat for the winning group: Lawrence
Voss, Mike Everson, Mike’s fiancé

of Dentaurum. The Alumni Association
board has voted unanimously to banish
this foursome from playing in next year’s outing. We were grateful
to our cooperate sponsors: Dentaurum, RMO and Unitek. We look
forward to seeing everyone next year!

Orthodontic Practice Transition

meeting! It is never
too early to prepare
yourself for the transition
of your practice. What
does the future hold for
your staff and patients in planning a practice
transition? Even if you are not currently
looking to expand or retire, this fast paced
one-day presentation will provide a general
understanding of the necessary framework
and important topics to consider in planning
a transition. With proper preparation,
instead of simply selling, retiring and
hopefully walking away, you can take steps to
ensure the practice remains strong and viable
as the buyer succeeds. In order to have a
successful transition between the buyer and
the seller it is paramount to understand the
process. Case reports will be presented to
highlight keys to success and deficiencies
that led to failure. No matter where you are
in your career, this presentation will help
prepare the foundation for the transition
process.
The program will be moderated by attorney
and practice transition authority Randall
Berning and will include a panel of experts to
review the framework of a successful practice
transition. Randall and his firm, Berning and
Affiliates, Inc, have specialized in practice
ownership transitions and expansions for
over 25 years and he has authored over 100
articles and paneled numerous AAO and
other presentations. In addition we have
Paul Baumann, CPA, ABV, CFF, ASA who will
provide material on practice valuation as part
of the program. Paul has extensive expertise
in providing valuations of orthodontic
practices and he is accredited in Business
Valuation. An overview of orthodontic
practice valuation essentials will be detailed
during his presentation.
We are also fortunate to have on our
panel, Dr. David Musich and his practice
administrator, Beth Barrett, who will discuss
the role of the orthodontist as CEO and
leadership in planning transition. Having
recently through the transition process,
they will offer insight to help identify the
important steps to consider during the
process. Beth will address what doctors
need to know about the role of key staff
during each stage of the practice transition
and why. Plenty of checklists and other
useful handout materials will be provided.
As an added bonus, you will also be
able to invite a close dental colleague or
spouse. Your referring dentist will greatly
appreciate the topic and your invitation
to the program can signal that you are
