They want something to remember of Smith, 20, who died Saturday, Jan. 16, a day after a car struck her on North Tryon Street. Charlotte-Mecklenburg police say Christopher Breeding, the south Charlotte man who was driving the car, was intoxicated and have charged him with driving while impaired. The Charlotte woman was “caring, friendly and smart,” friend Samantha Barrett said. “She was one of the nicest people I’ve ever met. “She was kind and always had a smile, and she could always make me smile.” Breeding, 28, of 6625 Cow Hollow Drive, off Pineville-Matthews Road, was driving a Mazda passenger car south in the 7600 block of North Tryon Street, just before midnight according to a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department report. Smith and a friend left the In-Town Suites motel, where they were visiting a friend to walk to Walmart, news reports Breeding said. For the first time since his election, Mayor Anthony Foxx came to the coalition’s monthly meeting, and Claire Green Fallon, the group’s president, (See Monroe, Foxx on page 13) Avery, a 2-year-old Haitian girl being adopted by a University of North Carolina at Charlotte kinesiology lecturer and her husband, has had to sleep on the street after the orphanage she was living in collapsed in the 7.0 magnitude earthquake on Jan. 12. The young girl and several of the children living in the Maison Des Enfants de Dieu orphanage have been on the street since the quake and the youngest of the children are living in the back of a truck for shelter. “It’s been tough knowing that, because there’s nothing we can do,” Tracy Bonoffski said of the child. “We’re hoping there will be some help to them soon.” Tracy and her husband, Mike Bonoffski, the marketing director for the Cabarrus County Visitor’s Bureau, were scheduled to fly to Haiti last weekend to sign more adoption papers. The earthquake has put an indefinite hold on those plans. The couple learned Avery wasn’t injured within the hour following the quake, but (See Parents wait on page 12) GET THE MOST out of your gadgets!
