Project summary Since 2001 there has been an increase in fusarium head blight (FHB)
caused by Fusarium graminearum and a corresponding increase in the
concentration of mycotoxins produced by this species, namely
deoxynivalenol (DON) and zearalenone (ZON) within wheat grain.
European legislative limits for these mycotoxins were introduced in
2006 for cereals and cereal products intended for human
consumption. Legislative limits for fusarium mycotoxins HT-2 and T-2
are currently under discussion within the European Commission.
The current project investigated Fusarium development in the growing
season and the mycotoxin content of harvested grain at harvest.
Mycotoxin content in harvested grain was modelled against
meteorological data to provide a greater understanding of the
important parameters involved and to provide models to predict
mycotoxin content (DON and ZON) of harvested wheat at national,
regional and farm scale based on agronomic and meteorological data.
The extension to this project will allow the continued monitoring of
fusarium mycotoxins over the next two harvest and a validation of the
mycotoxin risk model that has been developed over two different
seasons and from archive data from 2001-2005 collected from a
previous project.
In addition, data will be used to advise the cereal industry of the
seasonal risk of fusarium mycotoxins where legislation already exists
(DON and ZON) and the potential risk for fusarium mycotoxins where
discussion limits exist, and legislative limits may be introduced during
the period of the proposed extension (HT-2 and T-2).

Project summary
Fusarium head blight (FHB) is a destructive disease of wheat generally
caused during warm and wet weather at and after anthesis follows by
more rainy days and high precipitation before harvesting. The disease
results in mycotoxin contamination of grain and leads to the significant
qualitative and quantitative losses. Fusarium mycotoxins are toxic
secondary metabolites produced by Fusarium spp. During infection of
small grain cereals such as wheat.

Project summary
The anchorage of free standing crops depends upon the mechanical
properties of the rigid basal roots together with the shear strength of
the soil. A plant’s ability to develop a strong anchorage system will
depend upon the amount of rainfall during the growing season, which
affects the shear strength of the soil during development. The
anchorage strength of a cereal crop is important as varieties’ lodging
susceptibility is related to it. Improving anchorage strength, therefore,
either by improving the anchorage root system or by increasing the
shear strength of the soil will improve lodging resistance. Whilst the
properties of the plant and the conditions which cause lodging are well
researched, little attention has been made directly to investigate how
anchorage can be improved by enhancing the soil physical properties
of the top 10cm of the soil which contributes to anchorage strength.

Project summary
One agronomic approach of improving crop water use efficiency
(WUE) is the use of film anti-transpirants to reduce water loss from
plants. The aim of this study is to determine an optimum application

Project summary
To investigate the mechanism of PMAA formation and to regulate the
PMAA activity by altered hormonal response (ABA &GA) in developing
grains
Objectives:
To determine the endogenous levels of ABA & GA in developing grain
at different time courses in cold shock and control wheat plants
Application of exogenous hormones to cold shock and control wheat
plants to study their effect on PMAA production
To determine the response of developing grains to altered
hormone(ABA & GA) conc.
