Aloha from our CEO
Our Mission:
Eliminating Racism.
Empowering Women.
Founded in 1900, the
YWCA of O‘ahu is the
oldest and largest
women’s organization
in Hawai‘i. The YWCA
of O‘ahu cultivates
opportunities for women’s
and girl’s growth and
leadership. Over 2 million
people participate each
year in YWCA programs at
more than 1,300 locations
across the United States.
power in the YWCA.
Flex your muscle and show
your W to help us continue
our work—empowering
women and eliminating
racism.
Be a part of our semiannual
giving campaign.
Include the YWCA of O‘ahu
in your year-end giving.
Donations of any amount
are much appreciated.
December, 2012
Mahalo for being part of the YWCA of O‘ahu,
the oldest and largest women’s organization in
Hawai‘i. Because of your active involvement and
support we are able to continue empowering
women and eliminating racism.
In 2011, our Board of Directors and team members
worked diligently to stabilize the organization by
retiring the debt and cutting costs.
In 2012, it was our challenge to demonstrate
our relevance to the community. We did so by
expanding our legacy programs and starting new initiatives to meet
enduring and emerging community needs. We established strategic
partnerships for greater impact.
And we are investing in our future. Our facilities have experienced muchneeded
renovation and have had new life breathed into them. Likewise,
we are investing in our team, repositioning some and providing training
and development opportunities for all. In October eleven of us attended a
capacity building conference hosted by our regional leadership.
This month we not only close out our fiscal year, we also conduct staff
and board retreats to set direction and develop strategies for 2013. While
I can’t say for certain what the new year will bring, what I do know is that
we’ve set a firm foundation and our future is bright.
We look forward to, along with your help, continuing the 112-year legacy
of the YWCA of Oahu. Thank you for being part of our history.
With warmest regards,
Transitional Housing
Impact of the YWCA
“Fernhurst was there when I
needed a place to stay and
I’ve always appreciated
that. I have many fond
memories—I’m still friends
with the woman who was
my roommate in 1979! I
will always be grateful to
the YWCA and Fernhurst
Residence. You were there
when I needed assistance.”
-Jeanne M.,
former Fernhurst Resident
Fernhurst Residence
Located in Makiki, Fernhurst
Residence has been a
residential community
for women and children
since 1912. It is the oldest
all-women’s transitional
residence on O‘ahu.
Each year, Fernhurst
provides more than 11,000
bed-nights for women and
children.
From students to snowbirds,
women of all walks of life
have enjoyed the amenities
of the Fernhurst community.
A 900-square-foot garden at Fernhurst
is the result of a community partnership
started in 2011.
The yield from the garden contributes
to meals served at Fernhurst, where
women and their children are
provided breakfast and dinner.
Residents are assigned plots and
tend to the garden, which is growing
lettuce, mixed greens, herbs, green
peppers, chili peppers, cucumbers,
eggplant and tomatoes.
“The community garden represents the
peaceful sanctuary we strive to create
for the women at Fernhurst,” said
Rhonda Jones, supervisor of Fernhurst.
“From a practical standpoint, we are
helping our residents be healthy and
contribute to the sustainability of the
organization.”
Homebase at
Fernhurst Residence
Homebase at Fernhurst is
a program that provides
women with affordable
housing—and the chance
to transform the course of
their futures.
This YWCA program
offers eligible women
financial support and the
opportunity to prepare for a
transition from challenging
life circumstances to
permanent housing.
Through the Homebase program,
women receive mentoring and
job readiness coaching. They have
access to training and an onsite
computer lab.
These resources, along with a lowcost
living arrangement and daily
meals, enable each woman to
achieve her goals.
Homebase participants contribute to
the community by volunteering two
hours of their time each week.
“What
happened
to me can
happen to
anyone. I
lost a lot this
year—my
job, my
apartment,
my car and
my grandfather. I never
thought I would be in this
situation. Homebase gave
me a place to live, an
opportunity to look for a job
and a source of support. I feel
like I am going uphill—slowly
but surely.
I even got to attend the
YWCA regional conference
this fall in Kaua‘i. Learning
what other people do to help
others inspired me. I love our
mission and hope to do more
work to eliminate racism. It
just feels good to be part of
the YW family and I feel lucky
when I come here to work.”
Impact of the YWCA
“We have
different
needs [from
men]. It will
be nice to
be in the
company
of other
women who understand
exactly what you are going
through. I will do whatever
it takes to see my daughter
again.”
— Kariann Lubin, formerly
homeless
“Our women
veterans
are an
underserved
population,
partly due to
not having
a facility
and services
specifically
targeted to reach them.
But the reality is that there
is a increasing number of
homeless veterans that
are women and this much
needed project will provide
us an opportunity to address
the needs of the women
who served our country so
unselfishly.”
Fernhurst Residence
for Female Veterans
(new in 2012)
As our soldiers return from
war, re-entry into civilian
life is often difficult. Post
traumatic stress, depression,
substance abuse and other
barriers may add to the
challenges.
Exacerbating their situation,
many female soldiers return
home having been sexually
assaulted while serving our
country. The combination
of these factors can result
in homelessness for female
veterans.
In partnership with U.S.VETS,
the YWCA of O‘ahu is able
to guarantee housing for
homeless female veterans
and their children at
Fernhurst Residence.
U.S.VETS conducts the outreach and
case management; the YWCA of O‘ahu
provides the housing and economic
advancement training. It is a perfect
partnership that was launched in
October 2012.
Approximately 1,100 veterans experienced
homelessness in the state of Hawai‘i last year.
Dress for Success®
Honolulu
Dress for Success® Honolulu is a
signature program that promotes
the economic independence
of women in their various
life transitions by providing
professional attire, a network
of support and the careerdevelopment
tools to help them
thrive in work and in life.
Dress for Success® Honolulu
is more than monthly benefit
sales of gently used women’s
businesswear -- we empower
women, one by one, from the
inside out.
The program, which celebrates
its 10th anniversary in 2012,
serves clients through referrals
from partner organizations –
government agencies and
non-profits – that specialize in
job training programs or serve
women who are homeless,
domestic violence survivors, or
those who are reentering the
community from treatment or
incarceration.
Dress for Success®
is “Going Places”!
In response to the increasing
demand from the community,
new and expanded program
space will open in 2013. Under
the expanded “Going Places
Network” module, several
additional program offerings
will be available to our clients,
representing an expansion of our
local program to mirror the Dress
for Success® national offerings.
Wāhine Moving Forward
(new in 2012)
Financial dependence is
one of the main reasons
that survivors of domestic
violence return to or remain
in abusive relationships. The
YWCA of O‘ahu added
a new component to its
economic advancement
programs in June 2012 to
address this issue.
2012 was a pilot year for
Wāhine Moving Forward. The
program trained 40 potential
volunteers on how to mentor
domestic violence survivors.
21 of the 40 participants
decided to become
financial mentors for the
program. Each completed
the YWCA volunteer
application process,
including an additional
financial training session, background
checks and individual interviews.
Three financial series sessions were
delivered to 34 survivors.
The program addressed the subjects
of financial abuse, safety planning,
financial goal setting, budgeting,
saving, debt management and
credit.
Advocacy
(new in 2012)
For more than 100 years, the
YWCA of O‘ahu has worked to
improve the lives of women,
girls and people of all races. We
continue our efforts in economic
empowerment, health and
wellness, racial justice and
civil rights through advocacy
efforts which include dialogue,
education, and organized
action.
In 2012, advocacy by the YWCA
included: community education
and outreach on women’s issues
and racial justice; monitoring
and testifying on bills at the state
and federal level; suggested
‘take- action’ items to our
members; OpEds to our local
papers; and strong partnerships
with other women’s and
advocating organizations.
March marked Women’s History
Month. In celebration of the
monumental advances that
have been made to empower
women in our country, the
YWCA of O‘ahu launched its
2012 Women’s History Month
Series. The topics covered
included:
Women’s Reproductive Rights
Women’s Voting Rights
Title IX Access for Women
Women in the Workplace
Women in the Military
In late spring, members of
the YWCA of O‘ahu, YWCA
Kaua‘i and YWCA Hawai‘i
Island were in Washington DC
for our annual conference and
“Capitol Hill Day.” As a statewide
coalition, we met with our
U.S. Senators and Representatives
to advocate for the importance
of the Community Development
Block Grant (CDBG), Child
Care Development Block Grant
(CCDBG), Victims of Crime Act
(VOCA), and Violence Against
Women Act (VAWA).
In the fall, we participated in
‘Get Out the Vote’ by holding
voter registration drives. We also
held a voter-registration training
for the Young Women’s Network
who also registered voters.
The YWCA of O‘ahu will continue
to build on this momentum and
strengthen its advocacy efforts to
eliminate racism and empower
women.
Fitness
Impact of the YWCA
“I thoroughly enjoyed taking
swim lessons at the YWCA
of O‘ahu! At my age,
learning how to swim was
a milestone for me—my
happiest moment, my
greatest accomplishment.
Now I can practice every
day in Aqua class.”
— Sophie Adversalo,
Member
“When you learn to swim at
the YWCA our instructors
customize their teaching
to fit your individual
needs whether you take
a group or private class.
Our program is flexible so
you can schedule classes
around a busy schedule.
We teach with heart
because we care.”
— Alexis Moon, Aquatics
Program Manager and
Swim Instructor
“Alexis is a very good
teacher. She knows how
to see what level you
are, or how comfortable
and confident you are in
the water, and get you
to a place where you
feel comfortable. I really
enjoyed it and plan to sign
up again to continue to
improve. It’s never too late
to learn how to swim!”
— Rosemarie Ramos,
Member
Aquatics
In 1912, the YWCA of O‘ahu
began offering swimming
lessons at a member’s
private residence.
Our own swimming pool
was built in 1927, when
Laniākea, designed by Julia
Morgan was built.
In 2012 we celebrated the
100th anniversary of swim
lessons at the YWCA of
O‘ahu! We continue to
offer a comprehensive swim
instruction program. Hawai‘i
is surrounded by water and,
for their safety, our keiki
need to learn how to swim!
The YWCA at Kokokahi has been home
to the Adaptive Swim for the Hawai‘i
State Department of Education for
20 years. It provides swimming lessons
to students with severe impairments.
The accomplishments made by each
student are amazing.
Alexis Moon, Aquatics Manager at
YWCA Kokokahi says, “We feel that
everyone should have an opportunity
to participate in water activities
regardless of ability.”
Coach Erin Hisatake has been
running the program for the last seven
years. She says, “This is why I teach
swimming—there is so much joy in
seeing these students blossom in the
water.”
Health & Wellness
The YWCA of O‘ahu
continues its legacy
of providing exercise,
dance and other fitness
opportunities for its
members at all three of
its locations, through the
“Balance Plan” fitness
program. We encourage
individuals to tailor a path
to a healthier lifestyle by
setting health and wellness
goals. It means choices,
options, and support as
you choose your path to a
healthier lifestyle.
In 2012, the YWCA of O‘ahu began
offering Corporate Wellness classes
to groups. A customized program is
developed for each group.
We also began offering of Egan
Inoue’s Fit Body Bootcamp at
YWCA Laniākea on October 1,
2012, to keep pace with current
trends and demands in fitness.
The best thing I did this year
Leadership Development
Young Women’s Network
(new in 2012)
To cultivate the next
generation of women
leaders, the YWCA of O‘ahu
launched the Young Women’s
Network in July, The program
provides opportunities for high
school girls to network with
women leaders, advance
their leadership potential
and advocate for womenfriendly
policies in a culturally
appropriate way.
The 2012 Young Women’s
Network Board, comprised
of 13 high school juniors
and seniors, was selected
from local high schools. The
board members develop skills
such as critical thinking and
relationship building as they
experience the leadership
training and collaborate to
plan events for the Network
which involves an additional
100 - 200 high school girls from
across the island.
This new program was
designed to develop high
school girls’ leadership and
advocacy skills, using real life
examples and mentors from the
business and professional world.
Topics range from public speaking
and networking to meeting
coordination and advocacy.
One advocacy exercise involved
registering their peers to vote.
Impact of the YWCA
“I feel like
we started
conversations
among our
friends and
classmates
about what
is going on in
this election
year. We can make a
difference through voting.
Our impact through voting
can affect not only the
candidates but our lives. This
activity at Young Women’s
Network made me a lot
more aware of issues and
topics that are
important to us.”
— Lauren Aratani, high
school junior, Young
Women’s Network Board of
Directors
“When I saw
the slogan
for the Young
Women’s
Network at
the YWCA—
‘eliminate
racism,
empower
women’—it just really hit
me. After learning about
the injustices in the world, it
made me want to act. And
what better way than with
people who share my drive
and my passion to help.”
— Connie Lee, high school
junior, Young Women’s
Network Board of Directors
