Directions for American
flag graphic organizer.
• Each student will be given an American Flag graphic organizer for recording visually and
chronologically significant events and reasons leading to the American Revolution.
• You will need to create an American flag graphic organizer for each student. This will be done in the
form of a flip chart so that each stripe can be lifted as a flap. Students will write an event on each stripe, flip it
up, and during the course of the unit, use the underside for writing and recording pertinent information about
each event. These will be replicas of the large wall flag you created for the classroom.
• You will need a good set of volunteers to make the flag graphic organizers. If you demonstrate the
procedure for them, they should be able to crank these out in not too much time. Even if you end up
doing them all yourself, I think it is well worth the time and effort.
For each flag graphic organizer:
Materials:
-Four (4) pieces of red construction paper (12 x 18 inch size)
-Three (3) pieces of white construction paper (12 x 18 inch size)
-Enough blue construction paper to cut a canton for each flag
-Enough white to cut 13 stars for each.
Directions: Beginning with red, overlap the four red and three white pieces so as to create stripes of desired
width (about ¾”). You should end with the fourth red piece on top. Fold this piece in half, length wise, and cut
along the fold. Lay one half aside and the other half on the alternating stack. Hold securely and fold over all
sheets along the cut line, creating the rest of the 13 strips of the flag. You will have a white stripe on top. Now
take the half sheet of red that you set aside, and lay it behind the others so that enough is sticking out at the top
to create the final top red stripe. While holding securely, unfold to the center and staple through all sheets as
close to the cut edge of the inside red half sheet as possible. To add the canton, follow the same directions used
to create the canton for the wall flag given in Lesson 1.
These are worth the effort. The kids think these are cool! Nifty and definitely captivating and mesmerizing for
students to work with!
