125 YEARS PADERBORN HORSE CAROUSEL
The anniversary truck
LOTTERY
Text & Photo: Norman Vogt
In France, people do
not necessarily have to
go to an electronics
retailer.
At the Foire St. Romain in
Rouen we have recently
discovered a Continental
Pick Stand offering as
prizes every item of
household electronics
the heart desires, ranging
from high-quality
kitchen appliances to
washing machines. ■
In 2011, the “Paderborn” Galloper celebrated a
remarkable anniversary; its 125 th birthday, no less!
To mark this occasion, its owner Hartmut Nessel
commissioned a model truck of the Galloper’s transport.
For enthusiasts and collectors, it is well worth asking
for a miniature truck from the limited edition at the
ride’s paybox.
In 2012, Jörg and Gabi Spangenberger-Hauck
from Dillingen
(Saarland) will introduce a new
specialities sales booth.
As the name indicates, the
“Genuss in Nuss”, or “Culinary nut
delights” is completely dedicated
to nuts, and offers an impressive
variety of freshly made nutty
morsels. The design of the 6 x 3.50
metre attraction comes from the EK
Atelier firm from Erwitte.
LET’S DANCE
Text & Photos:
Helmut Bresler
Encountering rides at places and occasions
where least expected holds a very special
appeal. A current example is the “Let´s
Dance” Miami from Frank Eschenbacher,
visitors were able to enjoy at the “Lange
Nacht der Wissenschaften”, or Long Night
of Sciences in Nürnberg, Fürth, and Erlangen
/ Franconia in late October.
During the “Lange Nacht der Wissenschaften”
some 300 public buildings
opened their gates and provided visitors with
a look behind the scenes. Siemens is deeply
rooted in this metropolis area and one of the
main sponsors of the event taking place every two
years. The Nürnberg Museum Industriekultur enticed
the public with a special attraction this time. The
history of automation was elaborately compiled at
the museum, and in the entrance area a ride waited
for passengers. Naturally, the controls came from
Siemens. Frank Eschenberg built up his “Let's
Dance” Miami to the very millimetre and with all its
decoration elements and was the perfect promotional
medium for Simatic controls and well-frequented
from 6 p.m. up until well past midnight. A look into
the large electrical control box with technical
explanations of the ride impressed visitors of all
ages.
2011, a minor anniversary could be celebrated in
Rudolstadt: namely, the 50 th “Drehmomente”
episode since the beginning of the online video
production having been shot on August 27 th 2011.
The “Drehmomente” (“pivotal moments”) video
blog is a daily report from the Rudolstadt
Vogelschießen on the website
www.vogelschiessen-rudolstadt.de
On behalf of the town authorities and in close cooperation
with the event consultant and Fairground Director
Frank Grünert, a team of young, enthusiastic
people from the “theatre-spiel-laden” Rudolstadt and
Radio SRB, the radio station in the three-town trio of
Saalfeld, Rudolstadt, and Bad Blankenburg, takes up
the challenge of producing the daily video blog, providing
not only information on, but at the same time
tongue-in-cheek entertainment, from the largest
Volksfest in Thuringia and throughout the event.
Since 2008, 11 episodes, a review of the year’s
events and a special “Outtakes” episode (with the
funniest moments in front of and behind the camera)
have been produced
during the Vogelschießen
every
year. The individual
“Drehmomente”
episodes have been
charmingly presented
by Linn Kleingärtner
from the very beginning.
She is currently
studying drama
in Leipzig and spends
a part of the summer
term holidays working
on the “Drehmomente” team. Even though the young,
pleasant woman already had ample stage experience
as a performer and assistant of the “theatrespiel-land”,
she nonetheless enthusiasticly plunged
in (at the deep end!) as presenter and editor of the
video blog, although acting and speaking in front of
the camera varies significantly from playing at a theatre.
“Thanks to the energetic support from both of
my cameramen, Silvio Müller and Tobias Stößel and
the other team members, I managed to adapt myself
very quickly,” Linn Kleingärtner recalls of the presentation
of the first few episodes. Throughout the event,
each episode - recorded on the fairground the day
before - can be watched on the Vogelschießen website
daily from 10 a.m. Moreover internet users can
click on the individual episodes on networks such as
Facebook, Twitter, Sevenload and YouTube. The
“Drehmomente” team works in shifts on the daily reports:
the videos are recorded every morning, afternoon
and evening and the recorded raw material is
edited the same night.
The important topics for the individual episodes are
discussed by the whole team in advance, and the
moderation texts are updated daily. The strong focus
is on what is happening behind the Vogelschießen
scenes, such as prominent visitors, interviews with
actors, visitors, and VIPs from the local and national
political scenes. Special highlights for presenter Linn
Kleingärtner were the interviews of the former
Thuringia Prime Minister Dieter Althaus and the incumbent
Prime Minister Christine Lieberknecht. To
mark the anniversary spectators were provided with
a brief insight into the production process by introducing
the film makers in front of and behind the
camera. This year, they once again succeeded in accompanying
the Vogelschießen with much creativity
and humour, providing a great deal of information at
the same time.
VIRTUAL 5D
“Virtual 5D” and
its owner Courteaux Steed
Text & Photos: Norman Vogt
Throughout the season 2011, Courteaux
Steed from Troyes has been presenting his
new cinema and simulator attraction “Virtual
5 D”, which celebrated its première at the
Foire du Trone in Paris.
Inside the attraction, visitors are provided a visual
spectacle by means of special glasses, moving
seats, and effects. 14 different films are
available, which are changed several times a
day. The cinema’s front is appealingly decorated
with, among other elements, a huge T-Rex
dinosaur, and pictures affixed to the front area
on printed adhesive foil.
With its space-saving measurements of a 9-metre
front length and 5-metres depth, the attraction
requires only one transport vehicle. ■
After its premiere at the Potsdam Herbstfest, the
new Suspended Swing “Hyper X” from showman
Dieter Rausch from Dabendorf near Berlin appeared
at a major venue: the large Berlin Christmas Market
at the “Alexa” Centre.
The ride, built in the Czech Republic, has the following
measurements: front 15 metres, depth 12 metres,
height 19 metres. The flight height is given as 20
metres, but according to the owner there is also a ride
programme for children elevating to a height of 10 metres.
The arm with 4 gondolas, each accommodating 4
passengers, swings on a back-and forth trajectory; in
other words, above the visitors' heads. Rausch, a 7 th
generation showman, also tours a dodgem track. ■
NEW WORLD
Although it has already been touring
throughout France since mid 2010, it
has not been introduced by the
Kirmes & Park Revue so far. We are referring,
of course, to the “New World”
Looping World by Franck Pfausser.
Text & Photos: Norman Vogt
“New World”
from Franck Pfausser
Following the prototype for the
Spanish Banuls firm, the construction
was the second example
of the “Inversion 40–16” type built
by the Fabbri Group. Pfausser
successfully presented the 40-
metre steel colossus “New World”
for the first time in Montceau-les-
Mines on August 28 th , 2010. This
was the beginning of a long tour
with venues in Epernay, Rouen,
Rennes, Quimper, Tours, Orleans,
and Cap d´Agde. For many
years, Pfausser has been a loyal
Fabbri customer, having already
purchased the “Booster”, “Booster
Maxxx”, and “Crazy Dance”
attractions from the Italian manufacturer.
As is the case with the
prototype for Spain (which, as is
well-known is now under the ownership
of the Ordelmann firm in
the Netherlands), the French example
has been fully equipped
with LEDs, allowing for a continuous
change of
colours. The colour
scheme of the ride is
rather uninspiring: the
supports are painted
blue, orange and
yellow and the arm a
plain white. The station
area and the four
gondolas are dominated
by the colours pink,
lilac and blue - spiced
up with yellow flashes.
NEW JUMP
NEW PRODUCTS
“New Jump”
from Freddy Thinel
Text & Photos:
Norman Vogt
The “Smashing Jump” rides have been announced
to be a big sales hit for the Italian manufacturer BN
Performance Rides. The ride is particularly popular
with French showmen, with the “New Jump”
having already been the fifth example from this
manufacturer to go into operation in France.
Its owner is Freddy Thinel, who has now presented the
ride in Rouen at the end of the season, where Franck
Pfausser’s attraction, identical in construction, was
also presented, and visitors were able to enjoy both
rides at the same time. Both attractions were placed
far apart from each other – and worked to the limits of
their capacity almost every evening. The “New Jump”
is painted in lilac, red, and yellow. Apart from the five
“Smashing Jump” versions from BN Performance
Rides, a number of Fabbri examples are also touring
through France - this ride type has thus been the most
successful novelty of the last few years.
EXOTIC
A true 'exotic',
successfully touring for
14 years: “It’s the Roller”
Due to both its ride pattern
and its construction - which
may well be unique - the “It’s
the Roller”, toured throughout
England under the management
of Henry Chipperfield
and built by the Freddy Mattia
firm in 1997, rightly deserves
to be called “Exotic”.
Text & Photos:
Norman Vogt
Two passengers sitting
back to back in the strange
gondolas
It’s the Roller
the ride. The law of gravity seems to
be suspended and the expressions
on most of the faces suggest some
slight confusion. “Where the hell is up
and down?” is the question that can
To this day, the track ride causes quite a be routinely heard from passengers sitting in one
sensation and incredulous amazement of the gondolas.
among the visitors on fairgrounds throughout A train with five gondolas, each accommodating
England. Pale faces and short-term disorientation
characterise passengers disembarking from oval track. Once the gondolas are occupied, the
4 people sitting back to back, careers along the
lap bar and the hood - a metal construction
with incorporated Plexiglas,
are locked and the two drive motors
at both ends of the train are started.
First, the gondola train runs slowly
back and forth up to the first looping.
Then it picks up speed and the looping
ride is under way. Next, the
gondola rim begins to rotate on its
axis – first slowly, then faster and
faster – at remarkable speed.
The train races through the track rim,
which speedily rotates on its axis.
“The Roller” was built by the Freddy
Mattia firm in July 1997. Its first owner
was Ronnie Bently, who successfully
operated the track construction for
four years. In 2000, Stewart Miller
12

EXOTIC
“It’s the Roller” in
a blaze of light after
sundown
purchased the track, and in 2005 it was taken
over by its current owner, Henry Chipperfield.
The attraction has been and still is presented at
almost all prestigious British events. It is a true
crowd puller, especially for adolescent visitors.
A ride on the “It’s the Roller” is visibly enhanced
by an generous presence of light and smoke
effects. Relocating the “It’s the Roller” requires
only one transport vehicle, which was one of the
main reasons for Chipperfield’s decision to
purchase and tour the attraction – and very
successfully too.
One of two Roller
Coaster at “Tivoli World”
in Benalmadena
The amusement area “Tivoli
World” is located in Benalmadena
on the Spanish coast,
some 20 kilometres from
Malaga. It is a combination of
an amusement park and a fair
event, quite common in
southern coastal towns,
where transportable ride and
funhouse attractions are built
up in addition to permanent
attractions during the peak
holiday season.
Text & Photos:
Norman Vogt
Nostalgic rides
and children attractions
Tivoli World
For the showmen, it is quite a lucrative
source of income as most of the holiday-makers
stay only for a limited period
of time, which results in a permanent rotation
of visitors. “Tivoli World” nestles appealingly
at the foot of an adjoining mountain. The
area is open already from March to May, but only
at the weekends or for occasions. From June,
when the park is joined by the touring attractions,
it is open daily and remains open well into the
night. It provides a beautiful if sometimes slightly
old-fashioned ambience. It features paved thoroughfares
with oases for resting and relaxing,
and many palm trees line the streets of the park.
Snack stalls and booths round off the
gastronomic offering from the local restaurants
and beer gardens. In the centre of the area there
is the “Plaza des España” with a free space for
special events. At the time of our visit, it was a
kind of “Outlet Sale” held in white tents, but the
choice of products on sale was largely junk. In
general, it must be said that in addition to many
14

PORTRAIT
Free Fall Tower
“Caida Libre”, park mascot
and Veteran Car Ride
beautiful sections, there were also a number of
distinctly shabby features within the park area,
such as potholes in thoroughfares, tiles missing
on buildings or faulty lighting elements. Buses
bring the visitors directly to the entrance area
and there are also car parking facilities available.
Once visitors pay the entrance fee - which
actually covers only the “entry”, and not the fares
for any attractions - they come across further
payboxes, where they are able to buy tickets for
the ride and funhouse attractions. Apart from
single tickets, a day ticket was available for all
attractions (in the form of a plastic wristband),
which entitled visitors to unlimited use of all attractions
in the park open up until 1 a.m. during
the summer months. The highest feature in
“Tivoli World” is the “Caida Libre”, a Free Fall
Tower from Mosers Rides, which takes its passengers
up to a height of some 60 metres, providing
them with a magnificent view before they
plunge down. The tower was deliberately built
up at the highest point of the area as an eye
catcher and landmark visible along almost the
whole coast. For visitors preferring a view without
a “free fall effect” a Ferris Wheel is available.
While the front section of the park was mainly
occupied by smaller constructions, the height of
the attractions increased along the course. The
family-friendly “Amor Express” Caterpillar Ride,
which was very well frequented, was followed by
the “Tivoli Aqua” water ride, which is a permanent
park ride very effectively themed. Why the latter
was out of operation during the peak holiday
season though, remains a mystery. As there was
no water at all in the rapids of the ride, it has to
be assumed that routine technical maintenance
work was not the only reason. Another water ride
(“Poseidon”) was also “out of order” at the time
Ride classic for young
and old alike: the “Amor Bahn”
PORTRAIT
Top Spin “Tivoli Dragon”
“Twister”, “Tokaido”
Coaster and nostalgic ride
of our visit – a great pity! There were two track
rides: one of them an older coaster built in Italy,
the other the speedy “Tokaido”. In addition to
various kiddie rides, visitors also encountered a
magnificent train of cars. It provided veteran
cars for a marvellous ride through a green and
well-kept park. On an elevated track, easily
reachable via a number of steps, further ride attractions
were available. In one section visitors
encountered two smaller Ferris Wheels, kiddie
rides and other attractions in a uniform nostalgic
style. Further along there was another small steel
coaster and next to the previously mentioned
tower, the “Tivoli Dragon” (Top Spin) caused
quite a furore.
Further ride attractions available were the “Saltamontes”,
two go-kart tracks, a baroque Chain
Ride, a dodgem rrack,a railway, Twister and a
train group. The “Pasaje del Terror”, a Walkthrough
Haunted House with live actors, provided
the finest “fear factor”. Scary utensils were
placed even in front of this attraction: definitely
16

PORTRAIT
Creepy entertainment and
horror on the “Castillo del
Terror” Ghost Ride
not for the faint-hearted! Two further Ghost Rides
available were a permanent construction and
the travelling attraction “Castillo del Terror”, built
up between the Ferris Wheel and the “Techno
Jump”. Very well incorporated into the park was
the Walkthrough construction “Show Boat”,
where the tale of “Ariel - The Little Mermaid” was
presented after sundown, which was highly popular
with young visitors, just as was a ride in
“Pinocchios-World”. Even in the early evening
hours, long queues formed in front of this attraction,
where visitors were able to ride in 2-seat
gondolas through individual scenes within the
fairytale figure with its 'trademark' long nose. The
only drawback was that the gondolas went along
the track too quickly for passengers to actually
enjoy the magnificent details. A visit to the funhouse
“Jurasico” - a journey through primeval
times - was a great disappointment however, as
the three dimensional figures deployed in a jungle
setting were stiff and without animation. Matching
sound effects could at least have livened up
the course through the “Jurasico”.
In addition to the fairground attractions, a theatre
was also available in the park, offering a dailychanging
programme with various Spanish
artists and comedians. Spanish folklore, including,
among other attractions, flamenco dancers,
was presented in the “Plaza Andalucia”.
Advertising for “Tivoli World” was extended far
beyond the borders of Malaga with banners, huge
advertising boards and flyers attracting attention
to the amusement park. Aeroplanes trailing an
advertising banner, also flew above the heads of
the beach-goers on the Costa del Sol. ■
Czech rural fairground tour circuit
would surely believe that the
physicists have got it wrong!
Certainly for this writer, the
experience of the annual fair in
the historic old Bohemian town
of Horazdovice, as well as the
other often tiny fairs that trawl
the Czech countryside throughout
the Sumava (Bohemian
Forest) region and the adjoining
lands of the Plzensky kraj, is
truly a 'time travel experience'.
Traditionell Fairs (CZ)
An enchanting, magical 'winding back' of the clock;
back to a time when the arrival of the annual
travelling fair was quite simply the highlight of the
calendar in every community - especially for the
young who, as memory seems to recall, did their teenage
courting on the dodgems or the big wheel, gazing
mesmerized into each other’s eyes! Far removed it
seems, from the youth of today, who indulge in bouts
of frenetic 'texting', even if they are sitting no more than
50 metres apart. The Horazdovice fair (12 th - 14 th August),
was built up in the town's pretty public park, and must
actually rate as one of the larger fairs of the rural fairground
circuit. Its compliment of rides and attractions
consisted of “Fantasy” (Twister), the hair-raising twincentrifuge
“Skate Board” with its intriguingly simple drive
system (regular car wheels abutting the central
take-up wheel and those under the two whirling centrifuges
at either end of its single, centrally-pivoted arm),
the “Nessy”-themed “Lochness”, the kiddy ride “Hali
Gali” (which shared the same operator and a common
one of which boasted not only the 'traditional' mounts of
swans, horses and vintage cars, but also – intriguingly
- a giant pumpkin, as well as (rather alarmingly) a
cannon and a tank! The third, sadly, was bereft of a
name. There were also two track rides and two chain
rides (a delightfully simple one for children, and one
as well as the aquaticthemed
slide “Sea Slide”
and a swing. There were
11 confectionery stalls -
many selling the obligatory
candy floss - as well
as 27 others, including
the ubiquitous roasted nut
stall. There was also a
giant, inflatable bouncy
giraffe, two trampolines
and a somewhat 'genreless'
affair, in which its shrieking mini-devotees attempted
to walk on a mass of inflated plastic balls.
Clearly, the kiddies were very much at the centre of
things at this fair. There was, however, just one 'proper'
gastronomic operation, offering delicious Vietnamese
cuisine (the Vietnamese are the Czech Republic's second
largest ethnic minority, behind the Roma). Sensible
enough! This was more than sufficient for a fair of this
scale. Beer operations...well, this is the Czech Republic!
The fair boasted two beer tents; one with a seating
capacity of just 32, and another veritable 'giant'
accommodating 96 guests! Not exactly the Wies'n...!
Well, beer and klobasa - the Czech answer to Bratwurst
- go together, and there were also three beer
stalls with adjoining mini beer gardens offering this
delectable staple, but the one that counted perhaps
as the closest competitor to the excellent Vietnamese
operation in the gastronomic sector, offered not just the
obligatory klobasa and parek boiled sausage, but also
a number of local delicacies. This on top of the
exceptional Svijany beer, one of the country's oldest
brews, was just too much to resist! What a wonderfully
laid-back, uncomplicated, family-friendly fair it was
too! Conspicuous in their absence were lurching and
drunken visitors that blight many a fairground, and on
the Friday only a single, amiable lady police officer was
20

PORTRAIT
Delicious! Boiled
and smoked local sausage
specialities
on duty who stopped to chat with many a visitor as she
patrolled the site. On the Saturday a 'heavier' police
presence was in evidence; two police patrol cars were
deployed on the main road outside, the four police
officers keeping a sharp eye out that the special 30
km/h speed limit was observed. Glancing at the public
notice board on the town square, it was noted that another
fair was scheduled for the nearby village of
Chanovice. The administrative 'capital' of it's of six
neighbouring villages and boasting a total community
population of just 960, this should be a small-scale event
very much in tune with the traditional Czech rural touring
fairground scene. Definitely worth 'Czeching out'! ■
The only alternative to
the sausage booths was a stall
with Vietnamese specialities
MAYEN
In the town centre:
the Lukasmarkt in Mayen
Text & Photo: Michael Petersen
FRom October 15t h to 23 rd , the 606 th Lukasmarkt
was held in the historic town centre all around the
700-year old Genovevaburg.
Due to the beautiful weather there was hardly any
room left to move on the weekends; at times the town
of Mayen was stretched to capacity in accommodating
the visitors. The traditional Lukasmarkt has
become a cult event in Rhineland-Palatinate, and
those having eventually reached the fairground after
a bothersome search for a car park, were able to
enjoy a prominently occupied Lukasmarkt. Already in
December 2010, the market commission headed by
fairground director Horst Krämer, had decided on the
approvals to the Lukasmarkt and had duly chosen a
harmonious mixture of regular participants and newly
approved showman operations from more than 500
applications. In addition to the excellent selection of
fairground attractions, the town offers a magnificent
setting for a large fair. The market square was
dominated by the “Roue Parisienne” (Burghard/Kleuser)
Ferris Wheel, which was presented with both
open and closed gondolas for the first time. Built up
next to the Ferris Wheel, were the dodgem track from
Diebold, and the cult ride of the Lukasmarkt, the
“Breakdance” from Wingender. Schneider’s “Pirates
Adventure” and Langhoff’s “Top Spin” provided the
Obertor area with an appealing new appearance.
The junction opposite the Burggarage in the
Boemundring was also prominently occupied by
Senk’s “Höllentaxi” and Oberschelp’s “High Impress”.
Along the castle wall, Wingender’s “Air Crash”,
Sottile’s Simulator, “Wellenflug” (Barth/Eberhard),
“Südsee-Wellen” (Barth), “Time Factory” (Hartmann),
and the looping swing (Marquis) were built up. Moreover,
a bric-a-brac market was held on the Bäckerstraße,
the connection between the Ring and the
marketsquare, throughout the event. As a result, a
circuit course was laid out within the town. As the
Lukasmarkt was accompanied by numerous special
initiatives and events, high visitor attendance was
guaranteed also during the week. On the first Sunday
the local retailers were open for shopping. On Tuesday
and Wednesday a large bric-a-brac market was
held in the pedestrian precinct from 7 a.m. On Tuesday
there was the indispensable cattle market, on
Wednesday the legendary sheep market, and on
Thursday the designated Family Day with reduced
prices at all showman attractions.
The 606 th Lukasmarkt was closed with a magnificent
fireworks display at the Genovevaburg.
ANRÖCHTE
From October 7 th to 10 th , the Herbstkirmes was held in
the community of Anröchte, which is organised by the
fairground director Ralf Hüls and his deputy Ralf

Schulte from the Anröchte authorities.
Punctually for the opening at 5 p.m. it began to
rain. After a short speech and the tapping of the
keg by Mayor Heinrich Holtkötter, there was half
an hour of free rides for the younger visitors, free
beer for the adults, and the ceremonial stroll
across the fairground for the guests of honour.
This done, the Sparkasse invited all the guests
of honour to the traditional Anröchte fair meal
“Rindfloisk met Mierreuk” at the community
centre. The fairground is built up in the town
centre between the community centre, town hall
and market square, as well as along the main
street. From about 300 applicants some 100
were granted one of the highly coveted sites,
including five larger novelties. For the first time,
the “Burg des Grauens” ghost ride from Werner
Burghard was built up at the sports field, at the
town hall there was the dodgem track from
Hirsch & Heitmann, and as another novelty, the
“Air Crash” from Wingender enticed visitors on the main
street. The “Breakdance” from Michael Schneider was a
popular meeting point and the kiddie ride from Burghard
was also built up on the main street. While the “Shaker”
Miami (Tröger-Foulon) was presented for the first time in
Anröchte on the street towards the Schützenplatz, the
“Star-Club” Miami (Schneider) has been presented at the
Herbstkirmes for 40 years. The “Jetforce” from Dinali enticed
the public on the Bürgerhausplatz. Other ride attractions
presented were the nostalgic chair-o-plane from
Hornig, the kiddie ride, the “Disney Flieger” Jet Ride (Weber),
“Crazy Clown” (Tröger), the dodgem track from
Isken, and the “Big Monster” from Krameyer (for the first
time). Numerous game and snack booths rounded off the
presented attractions. In Anröchte, special importance is
attached to advertising. Accordingly, 1,800 posters were
put up and 100,000 flyers were distributed. Moreover, the
Herbstkirmes was advertised on the internet and in radio
commercials. On Sunday the local retailers were open for
shopping and on Monday morning the traditional
bric-a-brac market was held. For the fifth time, Monday
was the designated Family Day. The Herbstkirmes was
closed by a fireworks display. Despite the changing
weather, participants were satisfied with their results.
According to the organiser, Saturday evening and Sunday
afternoon were particularly well-frequented.
FÜRTH
Text & Photos:
Helmut Bresler
There is hardly any room left in Fürth during the
Michaelis-Kirchweih, and this was again certainly
the case with this year's event from October 1 st to 13 th
2011. Beautiful weather at the opening enticed visitors
from all over the surrounding region to the city
of Nürnberg.
“The beer gardens are fully occupied and so are the ride
attractions. It is a perfect start!”commented Helmut
Dölle, Chairman of the Fürth section of the South
German Showman Association. This year’s attractions
included the “See-Sturm-Bahn” (Sterzenbach), a
dodgem track (Perz), “Krumm & Schief Bau” (Hartmann
& Söhne), Wave-Swinger (Drelischek), “G-Force” (Kollmann),
“Horror-World” ghost ride (Distel), Ferris Wheel
(Drliczek), “Twister” Coaster (Kaiser), “Domino”
(Michel), “Simulator” (Kunze), and “Breakdance” (Wolf).
On the main fairground, the Fürther Freiheit, the
“G-Force” swing enjoyed a huge success, working to
the limits of its capacity every evening. With the “See-
Sturm-Bahn” once belonging to the Fürth showman
Günter Perz, visitors encountered an attraction that was
a regular participant for a long time, but this is now very
much a thing of the past. These days, the attraction is
At the Fürth Freiheit:
“Horror World” ghost ride
23

Very popular at Fürth: the
“Domino”. Right: the Kärwa
motif on a banner
lacking that special touch of thrill and appeal, which
used to typify this racy trip – and the large name sign is
no longer illuminated after sundown either.
All in all, the largest street Kirchweih event in Bavaria
has once again proved its appeal, attracting even more
visitors than the Erlangen Bergkirchweih event. Among
the crowd pullers there are renowned travelling
gastronomic operations, the two largest of them being
the “Altes Brathaus” (Dölle) and the “Südtiroler
Bergdorf” (Grauberger). 120,000 Kärwa coins had been
sold-out already before the opening of the event and
demand did not drop. The supporting programme offered
once again an ample variety, including two open
shopping Sundays, two fireworks displays, open-air
concerts, Kärwa-Gwerch, a Frankish Heimatabend, or local
folklore evening, a seniors' day in the Fürth civic centre,
and a family day. Not to forget the Frankish Harvest
Festival Procession, which enticed some 100,000 visitors
into the streets, and was broadcast live on TV to
roughly 1 million viewers. Positively worth mentioning
were also the new texts in the programme, while many
a reader missed the background information about the
daily life of the showman that was briefly introduced a
few years ago. A competition has been announced for
the Kärwa poster motif 2012 again. A good idea – but
the heavy and dark night motifs from the last two years
should not be repeated. A bright, friendly, and inviting
picture would represent the joys of Kärwa much more
effectively. In the final analysis, the Fürth Michaelis-
Kirchweih was yet again a big success for the 270
marketers and showmen. The fire at a site, where the
showmen parked their caravans in the heart of the event
however, was a severe shock. Due to a technical fault,
one of the caravans caught fire, and two others also fell
victim to the fire. Thanks to the speedy response taken by
the fire brigade, more serious damage was prevented.
During the BLV morning beer event at “Trixis Ochsenbraterei”,
fairground director André Holliter and Eduard
Wentzl, Chairman of the BLV Fürth district, honoured three
showmen for their long-term participation; namely Gunda
Müller (a proud 60 years) as well as Ingo Henz and Aribert
Hepke (40 years each). In 2012, the organising Fürth
city authorities plan to offer Kirchweih tours for the first time
in order to further increase the event’s appeal. With its
Michaelis-Kirchweih, Fürth is and remains a true gem on
the German Volksfest map.
MÜHLHAUSEN
“High Explosive” Coaster
in Mühlhausen
Text & Photo: Rolf Orschel
Despite its long tradition of more than 100 years,
the largest German town-centre fair in Mühlhausen
has lost nothing of its magical attraction.
The 134 th edition of the town’s greatest event
was celebrated by the locals and many guests
from throughout the surrounding region in 31
fair communities, from August 26 th to September
4 th .
24

In the past decades, the town-centre fair has
evolved into a festival with a unique flair, offering a
number of special peculiarities. It is one of the few
fair events this size without a central organizer, but is
largely organised by the individual fair communities
themselves. Varied programmes and events within
these communities invite the public to a stroll
across the fairgrounds spread right across the town
centre. As is tradition, an amusement area is built
up on the Blobach festival area, where this year the
showmen presented several novelties once again.
In addition to the novelty attractions “Shake & Roll”
from Schäfer, the “High Explosive” Coaster (Vorlop)
and Hamberger‘s “Fantastic World” Funhouse, visitors
were able to enjoy the “Breakdance” from Hentrich,
the “Cortina Jet” (Sachs-Schmitgen), Meyer‘s
Simulator, the Chain Ride from Kirchner and Hedt’s
Dodgem Track. Four Kiddie Rides, a Bungee-
Trampoline, Waterballs, Continental Pick Stands,
Hook-a-Duck, crossbow shooting, a shooting
gallery, as well as a number of snack, sweets and
beverage stalls rounded off the selection of fairground
attractions. For the fair event, the festival
area is formed from three different fairgrounds
separated by streets closed to road traffic throughout
the event. This time, there were several drawbacks in
the layout of the fairgrounds, as the concept had to
be changed due to the large ground measurements
of the coaster. As a result, not all the attractions
could be appealingly placed, such as two Kiddie
Rides, which were built up back to back in close
proximity to one another. Moreover, the “Breakdance”
was at a disadvantage due to its placement
on the smallest site at the Hirschgraben, whereas
there were large gaps in the entrance area at the
Bastmarkt. Even though these blemishes somewhat
marred the otherwise harmonious overall
image, young and old visitors happily enjoyed the
event, bringing most of the participating showmen
good to very good results. Positively noticeable
were the improved quality and the reduced sound
levels of the varied entertainment programmes and
music bands, as well as the peaceful atmosphere
inside the fairground tents.
High visitor attendance
the Fairground Queen
WERNE
Text & Photos:
Nils Benthien
For 649 years, the Simon-Juda-Markt – called “Sim-
Jü” by most visitors – has been celebrated in Werne
/ Lippe. Every year, it is held on the 4 th weekend in
October, this year from October 22 nd to 25 th .
All in all, more than 200 showman operations were
approved, including 16 large attractions, which
according to tradition, are built up throughout the
whole town centre. The “Petersburger Schlittenfahrt”
from Burgdorf was built up on the market square, while
Distel’s “Lach+Freu-Haus” stood at the Griesetorn. On
the Kurt-Schuhmacher-Platz, the over-the-top swing
“Flash” from Weber was presented as a novelty attraction
for Werne, along with Bonner’s “Breakdance”, the
walkthrough construction “Ghost” (Burghard), the
dodgem track from Isken, and the “Truck Stop” kiddie
track (Hirsch). Built up on the Kurt-Schuhmacher-Straße
were Schäfer’s “Shake”, the Transformer from Schmidt,
and the “Mäuse-Spektakel” (Landwermann-Henschel).
As usual, Wendler’s Wave-Swinger occupied the
middle of the roundabout. On the Hagen visitors
encountered the Twister from Berghaus, the Musik
Express (Wendler), Barth’s “Wilde Maus”, “Booster
Maxxx” (Denie-Hoefnagels), the Simulator “Fantastical
Trip” from Kunze, Schütze’s large Ghost Ride, the
“Columbia Rad” from Burghard-Kleuser, Petter’s
dodgem track and the “Jump Street” Miami (Klaasen).
Children could enjoy the kiddie dodgem track from
Fellerhoff, the “Piraten Trip” (Schulze), the pony ride
from Röper, and six kiddie rides. In the gastronomic
sector, visitors were provided with candy floss and roasted
almonds, fried sausages and baked mushrooms.
Games booths, concession stalls and the trade show
rounded off this year’s Sim-Jü programme. In the week
of build up, the “39 th Otto-Wendler-Gedenkfußballspiel”,
or Commemorative Football Match between the Werner
“Allstars” and the showmen was held at the Freiherrvom-Stein
stadium on Thursday afternoon. This time,
the Allstars with Mayor Lothar Christ won the match
4:0. On Saturday afternoon, the Mayor opened the market,
accompanied by the “1st NRW Kirmeskönigin”, or
fairground Queen, Angelique I. According to tradition,
the ceremony included the hoisting of the flag on the
market square, in memory of the right to have a market
granted in 1362, the “birth” of today’s Sim-Jü-Markt.
25

A LOOK BACK
Sim-Jü impressions
Moreover, gingerbread hearts were distributed and the
Guggemusik Schnoogesurrer accompanied the opening
with music. On Sunday morning the ecumenical
church service was held in the beer tent, and in the
afternoon the shops in the town centre were open for
business. On Monday evening a magnificent fireworks
display enticed many visitors. On Tuesday the bric-abrac
and cattle markets were held. Moreover, the
showmen also provided the special offer, “pay once –
ride twice”. The Simon-Juda-Markt was closed on Tuesday
evening. Preparations for the 650 th anniversary,
which is to be appropriately celebrated next year, are
already underway.
From October 15 th to 19 th 2011,
the district town located in the
north of North-Rhine Westphalia
celebrated the 354 th
edition of the Fettmarkt.
While the original event was a
cattle and bric-a-brac market,
today’s Fettmarkt is a colourful
mixture of a flea market, horse
show, traction engine rally, and
fair event, with the fairground
spreading from the Lohwall to
the Wilhelmplatz. Due to a staff
shortage at the town authorities,
the former fairground director,
Peter Wittek, was contracted to
organise the event, supported
by Mertin Bieckmann. Although
it was annoying that a walkthrough
construction cancelled
26

A LOOK BACK
The Fettmarkt from the
Ferris Wheel perspective
its contract in the run-up to the event, it was
possible to engage the “Taboga” slide from Oberschelp
as a replacement at short notice. Built up
at the Lohwall were the “Star of Berlin” Ferris Wheel
(Lorenz) Krause’s “Musik Express”, die Film Rocket
“Astroliner” from Esser, Welte’s Family Coaster
“Speedy Gonzales”, the dodgem track from Tovar,
the “X-treme Spinner” (Kleuser), and the chain ride
from Keuter. Moreover, younger visitors were able
to enjoy two kiddie rides, a Jet Ride, pony ride, the
“Aqua Balls”, a track ride, a Huckelpiste, and a
bungee-trampoline and a Climbing Garden. A
number of snack booths, games stalls and
concession booths rounded off the selection of
attractions. The Deputy Mayor, Doris Kaiser,
opened the fair at 3 p.m. on Saturday. The open
shopping Sunday, the Family Day with reduced
prices on Monday, and the fireworks display on
Tuesday evening enticed many visitors to the fairground
once again. The actual Fettmarkt with a
large flea market spreading through the whole
town centre, the traction engine rally in the rear
section of the Lohwall, a historic tractor show,
handicraft market, and a horse show were held on
Wednesday. This year, the event was
conspicuously advertised on new large billboards
put up in the neighbouring towns. Moreover, the
spectacle was heralded on posters, in local newspapers
and on the WAF radio station. Coupons
(pay once – ride twice), which could be exchanged
at the ride attractions on Saturday afternoon,
were distributed at the weekly market and during
the opening of the fair by a bell ringer, but could
also be cut out of daily newspapers. This year, the
event had to do without a real crowd puller. Most
of the rides available to the visitors appear regularly
in Warendorf, almost always occupying the
same site. Relocating a number of rides would be
well worth considering, in order to provide a new
overall image and prevent monotony.
Just as the other attractions, the beer wagon in front
of the dodgem track should be placed in the front
line, as there was hardly any room left in this location
on Sunday afternoon. Moreover, the clearly
noticeable excess in supply of kiddie rides requires
urgent action. Another issue to be dealt with is the
opening hours – instead of 11 p.m. many operations
closed already before 10 p.m. The Fettmarkt
certainly has a lot of potential, which should be
used to pep up the event.
Thanks to pleasant spring type of temperatures,
visitor attendance to the 976 th Bremen Freimarkt,
held from October 14 th to 30t h 2011, hit a
record high: 4.4 million visitors enjoyed the this
year's large Volksfest event on the Bürgerweidefairground.
Among the novelties on the fairground, the “Big
Bamboo” (Hempen) and the “Euro-Coaster”
(Fackler) were the most prominent crowd pullers,
but attractions returning to the Freimarkt, such as
Schneider’s “Power Tower” or the giant Propeller
“Booster Maxxx” (Denies-Hoefnagels) also
numbered among the Freimarkt 2011 winners.
(this time the “Alpina-Bahn” from Bruch), the section
between the Klangbogen and the first ride site
is still too “quiet”. The “Schunkler”, for example,
might well have livened up this area. While
Howey’s “Happy Sailor” was (apparently) very well
frequented on its new venue as the first ride in the
circuit course this time, the “Wellenflug” built up on
the former regular site of the Seesturmbahn was
not really convincing – meaning not simply the
attraction itself, but rather the fact that the lofty ride
(without backflash) offered an open view of the rear
side of the Freimarkt novelty “Big Bamboo” in this
location.
This positioning was far from ideal, and regrettably
28

A LOOK BACK
Unfortunate placing of
three show- and funhouse
attractions, one after the other
on the circuit course
also reflected the fairground director’s “unfortunate”
decision already mentioned in the preview of the
Bremen Freimarkt to place the show and funhouse
constructions “Rotor”, “Show der Sensationen”,
“Big Bamboo”, and “Toboggan” next to each other
or one after the other in the second half of the
circuit course. This unnecessary competition was
particularly hard on the Wall of Death, while the
“Big Bamboo” enjoyed many visitors due to its
novelty status. In the evening visitors coming to see
the fortune teller often found themselves in front of
a locked door – on several consecutive days even
the stairs were removed in the early evening hours.
Apparently, this went unnoticed by the organisers
on their patrol of the fairground. Also noticeable was
the fact that at the Freimarkt – in contrast to Düsseldorf
or Stuttgart, for example – the organisers had
not overdone the (excessively large) signposts for
escape routes. This time, many visitors took the
the national media due to an
accident on the “Krake”, casting
a shadow over the otherwise
successful event, the issue of
“minimum wage at the Freimarkt”
as well as discussions
about the pending renovation of
the power supply system at the
which is to be borne by the
showmen, was covered only by
the local press.
BOCHOLT
“Salto Mortale” and Ferris
Wheel in Bocholt
Even in the afternoon of the
opening of the Bocholt Fair
(October 14 th to 17 th ) there was
hardly any room left to move on
the spacious fairground, where
all the attractions offered
reduced prices for a “Happy
Hour”.
Due to the most beautiful weather,
with October showing its sunny
side, the showmen achieved
good to very good results.
Throughout the event, the Berliner
Platz, Meckenemstraße, as well
as all the streets and squares in
the city centre were filled with
pushing crowds. It was clearly
noticeable however that the Gasthausplatz was much
less frequented than the rest of the fairground. Without
any direct connections, this square is located
slightly off the circuit course and therefore it simply
goes entirely unnoticed by many visitors. Most of the
ride attractions are always placed on the Berliner
Platz, the layout of which was entirely convincing
again this year, with a particularly interesting
combination of both the latest and classic rides. The
chain ride (Baese) for example made its appealing
rounds, with the “Booster Maxxx” Propeller (Hoefnagels/Denies),
a high-tech ride, being presented
directly opposite. The “Salto Mortale” (Gusowski/
Langenberg), which appeared in Bocholt for the first
time, was also very well placed. Even though the two
dodgem tracks were built up opposite each other,
they were visually separated by the centre row.
Further along, in the direction of the city centre, the
“Venezianischen Pferdekarussell” (Langenberg) and
the chain ride (Fuhrmann) offered family-friendly ride
fun. It is true that the horse carousel was well-frequented
by the public, but it would have made an even more
magnificent visual impression if it had been built up
slightly more “detached” from surrounding attractions.
Hartmann’s “Krumm & Schief Bau” provided visitors
with fun and laughter on the Meckenemstraße, and
next to the beer tent Markmann’s “Nessy” offered its
passengers swinging fun this year. Moreover, visitors
encountered the “Octopussy” (Markmann) on its traditional
site, where it was able to underscore its cult
status once again. The sunny autumn weather with
pleasant temperatures and strong visitor attendance
on the weekend brought the participating showmen
good to very good turnover.
WEERT (NL)
Text & Photos: Ton Koppei
Together with the events in Leiden and Tilbourg,
one of the largest fair events in Holland is
celebrated in Weert. Even though the top attractions
from the Dutch showman industry presented
at these events are mostly the same, there are
major differences in the allocation of sites and in
the formulation of fares.
While sites in Tilburg and Leiden are publicly
allocated according to the highest bid, appealing
"known and successful” attractions play an
important role in the non-public allocations of sites
in Weert. The allocation in Tilburg and Leiden thus
leads to relatively high fares for visitors. In Weert
however, there is a system with maximum fares,
agreed upon with the participating showmen in
advance. As a result, every opening day in Weert
is like a family day with high visitor attendance and
attractions operating at full capacity; especially
this year when, due to late summer temperatures,
there was often hardly any room left on the fairground.
It goes without saying that fare limits are
not always popular with the showmen. In Weert the
fair is not "sold off” though.
Thanks to appealing attractions
and modest fare prices
visitor numbers are kept at a
very high level. Moreover,
the city authorities extensively
advertise the event
throughout the region. The
Weert Fair spreads over
several sites within the town
centre, with every venue
offering one or more crowd
pullers. Among the major attractions presented
this year, there were the "Spinning Coaster” from
Buwalda, the "Diamond” Ferris Wheel from Arend
Harms, Kriek‘s "River Rafting”, Kroon‘s "Mission
Space”, and the "Spuk” Ghost Ride from Sipkema.
Not to forget the "Fire Department Funhouse” from
the Ordelman family, which has been extended by a
brand new annexe this summer to an imposing total
front length of 32 metres. Apart from good effects,
even a simulated fire brigade was built into the
annexe. According to well-established tradition,
visitors also encountered showman attractions
from abroad which included, among others, the
"Montgolfiere” (Finke-Zarnikau), "Take Off”, (Ruppert),
the snack booths from Klaus Mittler, as well
as the Derby from the Severeyns family this year.
The Weert Fair 2011 offered a balanced mixture of
fairground attractions for all age groups, including
the "Rock It”, "Sound Machine”, "Breakdance”,
"Booster”, and the "Discovery”, which provided the
visitors with racy ride fun. They were joined by the
family-friendly attractions "Snow Jet”, Caterpillar
Ride, "Polyp”, "Magic”, "Beach Party”, "Adventure-
Show”, Slide, "Swing Mill”, and a labyrinth. As is
the case on all fairgrounds, numerous smaller
game containers (without any staff) were highly
noticeable also in Weert. Stacker, Point, Barbercut,
Discoround, or Trapdoor – indeed, all the current
game novelties are currently being presented in
container form.
HASSELT (B)
Top event in Belgium:
the fair in Hasselt
Text & Photos:
Patrick Vanstipelen
The official opening
The Hasselt Fair, one of the most appealing
fair events in Belgium, was held from
September 17 th to 25 th .
With 175 attractions it is also the largest Belgian
event. In comparison to the events in Antwerp,
Brussels, or Liège with a duration of six weeks,
the event in Hassel lasts only 9 days and offers
a number of highlights. This year’s list of major
attractions was long again, and included among
others the “Rock & Roll”, “Tagada”, “Delta Plane”,
“Challenger”, “Mad House”, “Drop Zone”, “Deca
Dance”, “Shake Off”, “African Jungle”, “Shaker”,
“Katapult”, “Big Apple”, “Wilde Maus”, “XXLl”,
“Devils Manor”, “Tokio Express”, “Dragon”,
“G-Force” (Booster), as well as Dodgem Tracks.
A novelty for children was the “Waterballs”.
Supporting programme: The official opening of
the fair on Saturday at 3 p.m. was followed by a
stroll of the city counsellors across the fairground,
and at 9 p.m. a 30–minute firework display
attracted many visitors. On Thursday the
showmen and organizers had invited some 1,400
handicapped people to the fairground and free
entry and rides on all the attractions. The Family
Day was held at the same time. The probably
unique “Frit & Ride” service is still very popular:
there are two parking bays where visitors can park
free of charge for 30 minutes in order to be able to
buy culinary fairground specialities without having
to search for a car park. In the end, some 300,000
visitors had attended the fair in Hasselt. ■
SALZBURG (A)
Text & Photos:
Ralf Schmitt
An “Autumn Market” first documented in city’s
archives in 1331 may well have been the origin
of today’s “Rupertikirtag” in Salzburg.
In 2011, a minor anniversary was celebrated;
namely the 35 th Rupertikirtag since the event has
been revived on the squares and streets all
around the Salzburg cathedral in 1977. Nostalgic
ride and funhouse attractions, almost forgotten
handicrafts, as well as an ample choice of food
and drink characterized the ambience of the
event, held from September 21 st to 25 th this year.
In beautiful late summer weather throughout the
event (at least by day) there were only cheerful
visitors, many of them clad in local costumes.
Almost all the showman attractions – many of them
enjoying cult status – were very well frequented.
Rides presented were, among others, the Bobbahn
from Helmut Karner (simply called “Schneemann”
at this event), Deisenhammer‘s “Sturmsegler”,
Avi‘s “Lachkanone”, Ratkowski‘s
“Teufelsmühle” Ghost Ride, as well as the chain
ride, “Hex’n Wippn”, Swing Boat, and many kiddie
rides. The fireworks display at the Festung
Hohensalzburg was held on Thursday evening
this time and was particularly well worth seeing.■

SHOW
“Moulin Rouge” at the
“Jahrmarkt anno Dazumal”
in Kommern 2011
The show booth “Moulin
Rouge” is evidence of the
fact that many a former artist
and comedian family has
eventually joined the tour circuit
of showman trade for
many decades now. This
year, the very attraction with
which Johannes Heinen had
bid his farewell from life as an
artiste, has been awakened
from its 20-year beauty sleep
by the young illusionist and
part-time history student Dominik
Schmitz from Bedburg.
It has celebrated its revival at
two historic markets: the
“Jahrmarkt anno Dazumal”
in the open air museum in
Kommern in April, and at the
historic market organised by
Roncalli in Aachen-Kornelimünster
during Pentecost.
as “Hell Drivers’ Original
Teufelskerle’ just two years ago.
Johannes Heinen has had enough. In September
1977, he presented his “Hollywood Stunt ed over a line of stunt cars. He will not sign any
his bike through burning hoops or be catapult-
further contracts as a stuntman for movie or TV
productions (he came to fame with roles in Diamonds
Are Forever and Herbie Fully Loaded),
scenes in
episodes of the popular
German TV crime series
Tatort and Der Alte.
“Most of the time, we
presented our car show
‘privately’, somewhere in
a city on a hired site, with
only the occasional appearance
at a fair event.
As a result, we seldom
met other showmen or
touring relatives. My
family lived somewhat isolated from friends and
acquaintances. At home, our children had hardly
any playmates as we spent only the winter in
Cologne, and during the season they had nobody
to play with at all,” Johannes Heinen explained
his giving up the Stunt Cars Show in an
interview in 1981. Moreover, life as an artist had
simply got too dangerous for the father of several
small children.
Johannes Heinen wants to join the showman
trade. In winter 1977 he built a show booth according
to his own drafts. Only the paintwork on
the booth front was done by an artists' studio
specialised in decorating showmen attractions.
Johannes Heinen wants to tour as a “real showman”
even during this current season, but with
an attraction that keeps alive his artistic tradition.
After all, he values his life within an artist family
with all his heart. Indeed, his grandfather Georg
Golz, the father of his mother Elisabeth, had
toured with a high-wire troupe. Elisabeth’s mother
came from the Rosenberg family from the
artists’ town of Alsenborn in Palatinate, who
toured as high-wire and trapeze artists and ran
their own arena from time to time. In 1939, Elisabeth
Golz married Franz Heinen from an artists
and dressage family of Großmaischeid / Westerwald
and had had their son Johannes the
same year.
After the Second World War, Franz Heinen had
already passed away, and Elisabeth and her son
Johannes toured with the “Roselli” Circus, which
had been newly founded by her relatives Johannes
Rüwe and Johannes Rosenberg. Although
Elisabeth worked as a ladder acrobat at the
Roselli Circus, her main task was to train the
Rüwe and Rosenberg children – as well as her
son – as artists. As a result, Johannes Heinen also
presented acrobatic tricks in the Roselli arena.
However, the two-mast circus had to close down
just six years later. The now grown-up Rüwe and
Rosenberg children had left the family circus
and founded small showman operations. While
Johannes Rüwe had settled down in the Lower
Rhine area and begun to tour the fairgrounds in
the Aachen and Cologne region with a pony ride,
the Rosenberg family tried to make a living from
dart throwing and Continental Pick Stands. The
post war years, with their promise of 'new
beginnings', were one of the first phases in which
the so-called “comedians” joined the showman
trade. For Elisabeth Heinen and her son, it was
the beginning of a ‘static’ life as private persons.
At the age of 16 however, Johannes Heinen went
back on tour. Around 1960, he toured as the partner
of the Caterpillar Ride owner, Rudolf Bauer,
before taking up his artist tradition again with a
contract at the then famous “Traber-Renz-
Truppe” in 1963. In Peter Traber’s high-wire
troupe, Johannes Heinen performed daredevil
stunts on the high-wire stretched to the top of the
44-metre mast, together with his boss and Peter
Rosenberger, who came from a Rhineland family
– not to be confused with the comedian family
Rosenberg. “I went up the wire to the masthead
first, followed by Peter Traber who, with a
hood slipped over his head groped his way up
the wire blindly step by step. When he had arrived
at the top, I – and this was highly dangerous
– went down the wire again, with Peter
Rosenberger coming up towards me and climbing
over me,” recalls Johannes Heinen. In 1966,
Heinen and the Traber-Renz-Truppe toured
Scandinavia, where they took a fling at car acrobatics
modelled on the American “Hell Drivers”.
Two years later, Johannes got engaged to
Ramona and joined the high-wire and car acrobatics
show of her father Michael Lemoine,
which was touring through France at that time,
for one season. At the end of the season Jo-
Twelve years later, Ramona, Johannes and their
now five children toured the show booth. While
Ramona drove the kitchen lorry, including a
sleeping cabin for an assistant, towing a spacious
caravan, Johannes drove the larger lorry
loaded with the “Moulin Rouge” and all the
props, and towing the small “Camping” mini caravan
from Walter Just-Kasita.
Walter Just-Kasita, who was just 75 years old
when he joined the show booth enterprise, is the
pearl among the troupe. He not only makes the
announcements over the microphone during the
parade, he also cuts a young lady from the staff
into three pieces in front of an amazed audience
inside the booth, has a guest from the audience
lay eggs and moderates the whole programme.
Walter Just-Kasita, well-groomed, wearing a
vest under the sports jacket, a white bow tie and
freshly pressed trousers, also comes from an
artist family. His father had performed as a “contortionist”
at all the well-known variety shows,
and his mother had presented chimpanzees.
Before the war, Walter had been engaged as a
The show booth features this
paintwork to this day
he had a serious accident during one of his performances.
After his recovery, Just-Kasita dedicated himself
to magic. Tours abroad as a magician took him
and his wife as far away as Japan. “One of the
highlights in my career was making dance orchestras
and elephants vanish into thin air,” the
grand seignior of the “Moulin Rouge” once said
in an interview. Later on,
Ramona and Johannes
Heine, who have long
since moved home from
Cologne to Düsseldorf,
applied to a fairground director
with their “Moulin
the Moulin Rouge offers a
special programme: In
the “International Night-
“Fatima” reveals the “Secrets of the Chiva Temple”,
followed by an “Oriental Comedy Show”,
which will “turn into a Fata Morgana for a young
man, stretching every last laugh-muscle, fraying
every last laugh-nerve”. Last but not least, “enchanting
women of various nationalities to reveal
their beauty in the 'Schönheitstänze aus 1001
Nacht', or Exotic Dances from Arabian Nights”.
All “subject to change” however.
The Front is “De-eroticized” in 1985
So, up until 1989, the Heinen family had succeeded
in enticing the public with the “Moulin
Rouge”. Around 1985 they renewed the front, as
the old one purportedly displayed “promiscuity”
from the variety programme, and had caused
them repeated problems applying for contracts.
Furthermore, since 1985 it has not been possible
to completely fill the show booth. However,
this also applied to the other touring variety
shows of that time; their days seemed to be over.
The Heinen family took over the “Hai-Show”, or
Shark Show, from Johnny and Dominik Barber,
and from 1994 on, they toured with other attractions.
Today, the “Heinen & Söhne” firm, based
in Titz near Düren and Cologne, operates the
SHOW
Classic job advertisement,
Kommern 2011
“Fantasy Drive” Ghost Ride. The “Moulin Rouge”
remained in storage until the spring of 2011,
when it was purchased by a young history student.
Dominik Schmitz from Bedburg had already distinguished
himself as an illusionist a couple of
years ago at the “Jahrmarkt anno Dazumal”, and
at the LVR open air museum in Kommern. In the
supporting act for the traditional “beheading of
a guest from the audience on the guillotine” he
had kept “Ilonka, das Mädchen ohne Kopf” (Illonka,
the headless girl) alive by food injections.
Later on, the fairground enthusiast was able to
purchase the legendary “Mister Miller Show”
from Benno Miller (deceased in 1996), which he
presented only a couple of times at German and
Dutch Volksfest events.
Today, the young show booth owner concedes,
“It was simply too much of an effort to operate
the Miller-Show”. Illonka, the headless girl, which
has now found a new home in the “Moulin
Rouge”, was presented to the public at this
year’s Museum Market in Kommern for the first
time. Together with the “Half-Lady” and Miss or
Mister “Volta” – depending on who has joined the
show and can light up light bulbs or fluorescent
tubes with his or her own body – he/she carries
the 8-minute programme, which although still
quite short, nonetheless brings back memories
of the classic show booth. It appeared last at the
Historic Market in Aachen-Kornelimünster organized
by Roncalli. Dominik Schmitz has much
more to offer though. His expert application flyer
“Paradox Sideshows” written in several languages
– referring to the show booth culture in
English-speaking countries – also offers “Suleika,
the Tattooed Lady”, “Ramona, the living Gasometer”,
“Jula, the Gorilla-Girl”, burlesque
dances, and much more. There is still a hitch in
realizing not only these attractions, but also in the
general “build up management” of the show
booth, as could be seen in Kommern and
Kornelimünster.
What is much more important however, is that
Dominik Schmitz is an idealist, who wants to revive
the ancient exposition in a literal sense. This
may well be good for an industry that has not yet
reacted to the demographic changes in our society,
and still offers too little to the ageing audience.
Even though it does not yet provide a professional
impression, the “Moulin Rouge” from
Dominik Schmitz definitely arouses memories. ■
from the Hirschfeld family
The 11 th exhibition of fairground and circus models
was held almost as a private function at the Stimbergpark-Hotel
in Oer-Erkenschwick on the last
weekend in October 2011, as the organiser had
once again consistently waived advertising
measures for the exhibition – for reasons that
remain entirely obscure.
Announcements in fairground forums are simply not
enough to attract new visitors to Oer-Erkenschwick.
Moreover, this year’s event was held one week earlier
than usual. As a result, the Saturday was virtually a
“family reunion” of fairground and circus model
builders, while there was only the occasional new face,
not to mention the dismal visitor attendance on the
Sunday.
This year, construction kits and fully assembled models
were available at a number of sales stalls once again.
Thomas Kind presented new handmade single
examples of Circus Barum - which unfortunately is no
longer on tour - built to the imposing 1:43 scale, and
Dennis Lux exhibited authentic H0-scale static
models. Most impressive were the large swings “Flash”
and “Rocket” from Thomas Weber, and the “Crazy
Coaster” which was only recently completed. However,
regrettably, none of his models are for sale. Photos of
these and many others can be found on Dennis Lux’s
website www.dl-kirmesmodelle.de.vu The Hirschfeld
family once again presented a fantastic diorama full of
light and movement, and Werner Meinhardt contributed
the Booster Maxxx G4, which was fully illuminated by
Rolf Sommer presented two novelties, with the
EXHIBITION
The frog king has been
kissed to life again: after a
number of years of recession,
the amusement industry
is picking up strongly
Around 15,000 trade visitors
were counted during the four
day exhibition, which means a
plus of almost five percent
when compared to the previous
year. And the number of
exhibitors also increased to
1,106 – among them 852 from
the USA, 101 from Europe, 83
from Asia, eight from South
America, four from Australia,
and one exhibitor from Africa.
All these numbers speak for
themselves: the worldwide
amusement branch has picked
up.
The German manufacturer delivered three of
its popular cable control towers to Legoland
Florida, which were completely newly constructed.
Because the park is located in a vulnera-
Almost every IAAPA Expo scores its own individual
marks – less for the reason of always the ble hurricane area, each tower had first to be designed
to withstand a wind load of up to 170 kilo-
same exhibition conditions because as is known
the event will continue to take place at the Orlando metres per hour. This improvement brought about
Convention Centre until 2019, but much more due a number of interested potential customers from
to the novelties in the surrounding parks. Last year Germany and the USA, whose parks are also located
in vulnerable areas such as for example in-
it was naturally the new Harry-Potter-theme area at
Universal Studios, and this year’s IAAPA event was shore areas. And there were also many enquiries
characterised by the recently opened Legoland about the available interactive adaption for all
Florida, which is located not far from Orlando. No Heege-towers (from smart rides and Lagotronics).
wonder then that a number of suppliers also presented
their products at the exhibition that they had Bertazzon / Sally
manufactured for the new park.
The American animatronics specialist and Italian
manufacturer Bertazzon delivered together the
grandiose Darkride and black light attraction “Lost
Kingdom Adventure”, which can be described as
a type of Lego-interpretation of the Indiana Jones
adventure. Ten theme rooms are located on 650
square metres next to each other, in which up to
1,000 passengers per hour can aim at various targets.
Bertazzon delivered 17 four-seat cars that
were designed as Lego-jeeps. For the occasion of
the IAAPA event, Sally engaged three morbid Legopersons,
who gave their best musically.
new units went into operation at Legoland Florida:
at the entrance, and at the attractions “Driving
School”, “Coastersaurus”, “The Dragon” ‚“Test
Track”, “Flying School” and “Lost Kingdom Adventure”.
No wonder then that a large figure from Legobricks
was presented at the IAAPA stand, with
which visitors could be photographed.
SB International
The Swedish manufacturer of kiddie driving
schools also supplied the new Legoland with a
number of new attractions. As new project announcement
for 2012, there are to be five driving
schools delivered to Germany believe it or not, and
a large example with 90 vehicles for Universal Studios
Japan.
Vekoma
Following the first suspended simulation ride that is
called “I-Ride” at Vekoma and opened at the E-DA
World Taiwan, there are four new orders for such an
attraction type where passengers hang in front of a
curved screen in hanging gondolas: one goes to
the Chinese park Guei Yang, and the three others
to unnamed customers.
A classic “Boomerang” will go to Fanta Wild in
Zhengzhou and also to Fanta Wild in Xiamen in
2012, which are two new parks in China, whilst a
new “Giant Inverted Boomerang” will be delivered
to the Jin Jian Park, also in China.
As it is, the People’s Republic of China appears to
be developing into the main sales market for Vekoma
as well: the Chinese Berjaya Park near Peking
has already ordered a 610 metre long, one train
At long last there was a
larger outside area with operational
attractions, here a view of
Further along, the new Yas Island Water Park that
is to open in a few months directly next to Ferrari
World has contracted a Suspended Coaster that
Vekoma operates under the name of “Splash Party”.
Each of the four passengers in the individual
gondolas is able to throw a water bomb at viewers
standing under the course
during the actual ride –
dripping wet fun seems to
be pre-programmed on this
attraction.
Gosetto
Etnaland Park in Sicily will
already have installed the
interactive Darkride “Haunted
School” from Italian
manufacturer Gosetto by
the end of 2011, which will
be one of the first hardware attractions at the water
park that doesn’t offer water fun directly. With that,
the park in Sicily is taking steps to develop into an
overall theme park, and not just a pure sliding park
(and will also receive a coaster from Mack Rides).
The new indoor attraction (30 by 20 metres) will be
punctually available to visitors at the start of the
2012 season in a soft-opening-phase. The official
opening will most probably follow with other novelties
first in the year 2013. Until then however, the
“Haunted School” with its innovative and different
theming (leading through ten school classes) will
without a doubt cause lots of goose bumps.
Further along Gosetto is also building two new
Darkrides, one of which will have rotating cars. Both
attractions will be delivered out of Europe. Two
“Magic Tree” constructions will also be delivered:
one to Switzerland (with customised targets in and
outside the vehicles), and another to an unnamed
EU country. Two travelling funhouses will also be
delivered in 2012 – one to Spain and one to Portugal.
Zierer
There is to be a new huge slide for the coming
season at the Northern German Serengeti Park.
The attraction named “Savannah” will reach a
maximum height of 23 metres during a sideway
swing-out of 120°.
The 24 seats facing outwards will be covered
over by a large straw hat – an unusual theming
that fits in well with the overall African park design.
The Finnish Tikkimaki Park will receive a new
“Loop Fighter” from Technical Park, the arm accommodating
16 passengers who will be able to
enjoy complete rollover movements.
Additionally, the Italian firm will be erecting a
most unusual Ferris Wheel construction in a new
theme park in the second largest Ukrainian city
of Kharkov. The 55 metre high attraction with its
20 spokes will not only carry 40 cabins, but will
be integrated into a theatre stage as background
setting.
In addition to the already reported coasters for
Busch Gardens Williamsburg (Launch Coaster with
additional drop-element) and for Legoland Billund
(coaster with a vertical drop), Zierer will also be
making delivery to the new Central Park Gorky in
the Ukrainian city of Kharkov. In this case an Elevated
Seating Coaster will open on the 1 st June
2012. The Indonesian Jungleland will also receive
an Elevated Coaster from Zierer of the same type.
Both constructions are 535 metres long and have
an identical layout as the coaster opened at
Germany’s Schwabenpark in 2010.
In autumn 2012 Legoland Malaysia will open and
EXHIBITION
The new project from
abc rides is called “Flying
Games” and can be
equipped with water cannons
or softball cannons
The beautiful illustrations
show the interactivity between
passengers and viewers
rotates at up to eight r.p.m. The maximum lifting
height is almost six metres.
SBF Visa
Polin introduced a new
project in the water slides
segment: “Magic Spheres”
abc rides
The Swiss manufacturer presented an interesting
interactive ride in Orlando. In “Flying Games” that
can be equipped with water cannons or also with
softball cannons, two passengers are seated in one
of the twelve gondolas. Additionally there is also a
joystick in the middle with which the gondola can
be individually steered up or down or rotated horizontally
at 360°, whilst the complete gondola cross
The Italian manufacturer presented a new ride construction
by the name of “Aquaplane” in Orlando.
Each of the eight gondolas offers place for two
passengers, and the attraction is equipped with two
water cannons. After the maximum height of four
metres is reached, the targets in the centre have to
be hit. The floor space requirement of the attraction
is ten metres.
Additionally, the Italian firm has reworked its doublearmed
major ride “Sky Glider”: the “Time Machine”
now offers four instead of two seats per gondola,
but the interaction between both passenger carriers
remains, which can be brought up to a 12 metre
high airspeed.
KMG
Additionally to the already reported projects for
20012/13 in our recent December edition, the
Dutch manufacturer KMG was also able to reveal
the following sales: in 2012 an “X-Factory” will be
delivered to an American park. And after there is already
a French showman for the new “Sicko” project,
an unrevealed operator in the USA has also
decided on this compact swing that side-swings on
both sides up to 120°. At the end of 2012, punctually
for the 2013 season, a British theme park will be
delivered a 21 metre high “Freak Out” construction.
The first major ride type “XLR8” will by the way be
delivered soon to Dutch showman Jarno Otten.
The new attractions
“Time Machine” from SBF Visa
Polin
Polin – in the meantime Europe’s leading water slide
manufacturer with its head office in Turkey – has
developed a very interesting water slide. The “Magic
Sphere” has a diameter of 20 metres in which fourseat
rubber boats slide around at a 32° angle, completing
horizontal rotations as well as vertical experiences,
before travelling into another slide
course through an opening. Special effects as well
as lighting elements (that at Polin would be sensibly
brought about by ecological incidence of light)
can be adapted as a part of, or the complete opening
of the spherical orb. The ground area of a “Magic
Sphere” is 48 by 48 metres.
A smaller variation for two-seat tubes is the
“Spheres”. This attraction has the same features,
but only has a diameter of six metres, which
reduces the ground space to eleven by seven
metres. Additionally, a number of “Spheres” can be
put in a row and be combined with other slide
elements.
These and all other slides from Polin – in 2011 there
were 150 newly installed attractions – have been
completed in 48 brilliant PAL-colours, which due to
the special RTM fabrication, can withstand strong
Wiggling stereo pictures are decades old,
but they were never so quickly and simply
produced as by the system from 3D Me
The “Deep Sea” model
from KaGo & Hammerschmidt
As usual there was
nothing to be gleaned from the
Swiss coaster manufacturer
B&M; here in photo are Sophie
and Walter Bolliger in front of a
photo of Heide-Park’s “Krake”
sunrays for many years.
3D Me
Wiggling stereo pictures have been in existence for
many decades. However there has been a new development
by 3D Me, that provides 3D-prints within
minutes to all park operators with the aid of a
compact stereo camera and necessary software.
Swiss Rides
After the KaGo & Hammerschmidt firm introduced
its underwater ride project for the first time at the
EAS 2010, the Swiss manufacturer found a competent
partner for the realisation
of the hardware, the chairlift
principle of a roller, which
was already used at the Swiss
pavilion at the Expo 2010 in
Shanghai not long ago. In this
case however there is no open
ski lift-gondola but watertight
passenger carriers for – according
to size – from ten to
twenty passengers. These
move on the 200 metre long
tracks over the water, and can
also ascend and descend
vertically. The costs for this type
of attraction including animatronics,
design, and a 50 by 26
metre sized water basin would come at around ten
million Euro, however this system could also be
erected outdoors or even in the ocean (for example
travelling past protected coral reefs).
Intamin
Unsurprisingly Intamin will be erecting quite a number
of attractions worldwide in the upcoming season,
among them naturally also first class coasters.
Outstanding among them is without a doubt the
new “Half Wing Coaster” for Hersheypark, which
apparently will go into operation in May 2012 under
the name of “SkyRush”. The 32-seat trains with only
the outside laying over the tracks will speed at up
to 120 kilometres per hour over the 61 metre high
and 1,100 metre long course.
Intamin is considered as the developer of freefall
attractions, after all the first generation of this type
of construction was already in existence in 1982,
followed by special constructions such as the “Reverse
Freefall Coaster”. So it’s no wonder that the
Swiss firm is working on a completely new form of
freefall pleasure. There was not much revealed, but
it apparently will be a track bound construction with
magnetic brakes.
SplashTacular
IAAPA to install a water park on his grounds. Up
former years there was also an intense dragster
park is located not far from Wet ’n Wild, but John
Arie sees enough potential due to his annual
500,000 visitors. He has contracted Water Technology
with the design of the water park that will
contain products from SplashTacular exclusively,
among them the most spectacular slides that the
American manufacturer currently has in its programme,
and with that will create a type of showcase
on a lucrative location. In detail the attractions
will be the “Rally Racing Channel”, a “Splash Rally”,
a “360Rush”, a “Double BowlsEye”, a “Twisted Racers”,
a “Rush City” water playground, a wave pool
the Austrian firm Funtime announced
Zamperla’s novelties
KuKa Roboter was represented
for the first time under
its own name at Orlando
On the S&S stand: one of
the new vehicles for the XXL “El
Loco” presented at the Australian
Movie World
Zamperla
The Italian manufacturer was quite astounded
when the Indian Walk Water Theme Park approached
the company and wanted exactly the
same coaster as the “Mine Train” erected in 1999
at Ocean Park Hong Kong, however for level
grounds. And so Zamperla developed a 710 metre
long, 21 metre high family attraction with a speed
of up to 76 kilometres on the basis of the same layout.
The Italian miniature park Leolandia will receive an
attraction similar to a “Splash Battle” that Zamperla
has named “Water Fight” in 2012. A 145 metre
long water canal will be travelled over by eight pirates
in eight wonderfully designed (as sailing
ships) boats.
After Zamperla’s new development “Air Race” was
installed at the amusement park on Coney Island
for the first time in 2010 and a further
construction of this type at the
Portuguese Aquashow Park, the
manufacturer received five further
orders for 2012: an “Air Race” will
go to North Korea, China, the USA,
Indonesia, and the Ukraine. In addition,
a smaller version was introduced
that offers eight arms for 32
passengers.
Further along Zamperla is erecting
an electrical racing track in China.
40 two-seat automobile cars will travel at up to 10
kilometres per hour over the double 450 metre long
course.
S&S
In recent times the innovative manufacturer endeavours
strongly to extend its thrill ride range with
family attractions. Already last year there were a
number of kiddies rides introduced, with the “Mini
Hu” addition this year, on which the two five metre
long arms move leisurely from one side to the other.
With that, the four passengers per gondola experience
comfortable and light airtime feelings (0.2
g). The ride requires floor space of 8.5 by 6.5 metres.
In addition to this portable attraction there is
also a park version available, in which case four
arms are arranged on an additional rotating platform.
Dotto Trains
The Italian manufacturer of road trains has full order
books. The so called ecological “Green Express”
is in demand in particular, with locomotives
Muson River and Sirius being equipped with new
Euro-5-motors.
lagotronics
The first water slide with a photo system will be
opened in February 2012 together with manufacturer
Van Egdom, also from the Netherlands. The
attraction is a 75 metre long funnel slide into which
a water resistant camera system from Lagotronics
will be built, in order to take action snaps in an exposed
spots. The location of the “De Crazy Cone”
will be the Dutch holiday park Marveld Rekreatie
near Zwolle, which is not far from the German border.
The British-French manufacturer presented a model
of a transportable viewing tower at IAAPA, with a
double-level passenger carrier (upper level 60
seats, lower level with an open aisle). Heights between
50 and 120 metres can be ordered, and
space requirement is 20 metres in diameter.
Mack Rides
In addition to the large number of constructions for
2012 and 2013 about which we have already reported
in our EAS revue (see KPR 11/2011), further
projects were announced during the IAAPA event:
instead of the initially thought of water coaster, the
indoor and outdoor park Toverland from the Netherlands
has ordered a Spinning Coaster from Mack.
The layout is identical to that of the “Le Twist” at the
French Parc Le Pal.
The eat firm has a Zip-Line
construction in its programme
where muscle power is still
required (the first construction
of this type is at Eco Safari
Tours near Orlando
A new park is to be erected by the beginning of the
Olympic Games in the Russian city of Sochi. Many
suppliers are involved, among them also Mack with
three attractions: a Launch Coaster, a Wild Mouse
and a Teacup ride.
Large Omni-Movers have been erected in a Chinese
park until now, that reach a ride time of over
ten minutes with 120 three-seat gondolas.
Maurer Rides
Maurer was able to realize a Racing Coaster
“Fiorano GT Challenge” for Ferrari World in Abu
Dhabi that opened in 2010, with a number of
LSM-motors to create an authentic racing feeling.
Maurer wants to change this experience now in
order to give the possibility also to smaller parks
to choose various layouts that are smaller and
more compact, but which still have the proven
Ferrari World features: low height but intensive
acceleration with realistic vehicles, modelled by
a BMW-subcontractor.
For example, the 260 metre short and with
launch section equipped layout, could offer with
two thoroughfares and with that twice the acceleration,
completely different experiences – one
with a more moderate speed (40 km/h), and the
second at high speed (65 km/h). Very interesting
also is the 400 metre long “Möbius Track”-
layout where two trains undertake a race, and
where acceleration takes place again during the
route through the station, in order to arrive at the
same platform.
Two possible track layouts for a coaster with LSM-motors
and flying starts were presented by Maurer Rides
The “Mammoth” slide has
been erected directly next to
last year’s “Wilde Beest”
ProSlide
Following the opening of the 520 metre long water
slide attraction “Wilde Beest” at the American
Holiday World in the past season, a second very
similar construction has been ordered from the
same manufacturer.
The “Hydro Magnetic”-technology (LIM) is also
in use on the “Mammoth”, in order to make sliding
uphill sequences possible, as on a coaster.
However 6-seat round tubes with backrests will be
used on the 537 metre long course instead of fourseat
boats, with which the capacity will be increased
to 1,000 persons per hour. Further water slides will
be delivered to: OCT Shanghai (China), Alottawata
Water Park (Canada), White Sphere (Russia), Beijing
Happy Magic (China), Pulau Poh Water Park
(Thailand) and Genting Indahpura (Malaysia).
With so much cooling
can become a little hotter again,
is typical for every
Legoland Park
A wooden coaster, a suspended
coaster, a waterskiing
show, and a botanical garden –
none of these features have
ever existed in a Legoland park
before. And it’s exactly these
elements that make the second
Legoland in North America,
which opened in the middle of
October 2011, to the largest,
most extensive, and perhaps
also the best of all times.
Legoland Florida
Text & Photos: Frank Lanfer
The combination of wooden
coaster/Statue of Liberty is
already in existence – however
a couple of sizes larger – at
Germany’s Heide-Park
The reason for this is obvious: Legoland Florida
is not a completely new park, but is located on
the area of the earlier Cypress-Gardens near
Orlando. When this park opened in 1936, it was
the first, and for a long time the only one in Florida,
initially being only a pure botanical garden, with
additional elements being added step by step, for
example the already mentioned waterskiing show
that became famous worldwide. Very soon acrobatic
show elements were added such as high
diving and water ballet, as well as a petting zoo,
a number of aviaries, an unusual viewing tower
for those days, and later in the 1990s, the ride
attractions and coasters also increased. Nevertheless
the increasing competition from Disney,
Universal & co caused gradually increasing
financial difficulties for the historic park. During
the past three decades there were a number of
owner changes before Cypress Gardens Adventure
Park had to close its gates permanently at the
end of 2009 (an in depth portrait in KPR 3/2008).
An idea from a new owner to “enrich” the historic
Cypress Gardens with recuperation and residential
premises also had to be abandoned due to the
developed real estate crisis, so the future looked
bleak for the park.
60

Long Search for Property
However, the English Merlin Entertainments
Group didn’t consider too long and took advantage
of the unique possibility to get a foothold in
the greater tourist destination area of Orlando.
The new Park Manager Adrian Jones came right
to the point: “Central Florida is a Mecca for theme
parks. Since Disney World opened in 1971, if you
have a credible theme park brand, you have to be
there.” Already since 1992, the Danish Lego
Group had acquired an ideal property in Central
Florida and had in the meantime opened
Legoland California and announced the opening
of another park of the same type in 2009 in Kansas
City (US-State of Missouri). However when at the
beginning of 2010 a valuation of 25 million USdollars
was established for the complete Cypress
Gardens area including stock, it was the end of
the well advanced plans for Kansas, where a
“replacement” Lego Discovery Cove will open in
2012.
The Rebuilding
The conditions in the centre of the lake landscape
of Winter Haven, approximately three quarters of
an hour by car from Orlando were ideal, due to
the already existing park: political support from
the local government could be counted on
(during the first 10 years, the local authorities will
contribute 500,000 dollars annually towards new
employment opportunities) in the building of an
entertainment and recreational area (no time
consuming changes in zoning plans were
necessary) as well as an improved infrastructure
(the construction of a direct fast
road between Orlando and
Legoland was seriously in view).
Due to the already available facilities
of an existing park, not only the
realisation phase of the usual ten
years could be reduced to two, but
the costs were also reduced from
an approximately 300 million Dollars
for a complete new park (like
in Malaysia), to only nearly 100
million Dollars, as the primary
infrastructure outside (traffic area)
as well as inside the park area
(supply line and facilities) were already
available and were even in
an excellent condition due to a
general overhaul a few years earlier
with the assistance of public
subsidies of an amount of 15 million
Dollars.
Speedy ride fun on Zierer’s
every Legoland Park,
Beautyful Landscape
And something good was also done in retaining
the strong vegetation on the shores of Lake
Eloise: “With its lakefront setting and botanical
gardens, it was probably the most beautiful site
we’ve ever looked at,” explained John Ussher,
Legolands Director of Development, enthusiastically.
Actually the mature garden area is most
unusual for a newly opened park, so that the
completed project, even though cut back and
thinned out, looks different to plants at most other
new parks, which in the first years of operation
look like a desert landscape due to the half dried
out plants. Legoland Florida however looks completed
due to the lush vegetation, although this is
actually not the case. During the next few months
further attractions will be added, and from the
middle of 2012 the already available water park
will be renewed, and following Legoland California,
will be only the second Lego-water park to
reopen worldwide. And if the visitor numbers are
positive, a Legoland hotel will open in 2013
(following England, California and Malaysia, it will
be the fourth worldwide). This building project has
also been approved by the local authorities, due
to the promise of the additional so called “bed tax”
rate of currently five percent.
DiFficulties in the Beginning
There was however one or the other difficulty to
overcome in the beginning, in particular how the
long stretched out property could fit best to the
new requirements. Whilst all Legolands until now
have been erected “on green fields” with very
compact park areas, which is a benefit especially
for small children who easily get tired feet, the
active area of the new Legoland has a length of
almost 800 metres (plus 200 metres for the future
water park), and a width of maximum 400 metres
and a minimum of 170 metres. In comparison,
Legoland Germany has an area of 300 by 480
metres (not including the holiday village). The
opening up of the park is by way of circuit paths;
only the entrance area “The Beginning” and the
back area “Lego City” are joined together shortly
by the centrally located “Miniland USA” that on a
scale of 1:20 presents Florida themes such as
Miami, Daytona Beach and Cape Canaveral. A
62

similar circuit already existed in the predecessor
park, and the paths have only been changed a
little here and there: straight paths lead around
trees partially, the topographic height difference
has been partly levelled, and simple concrete
slabs have been replaced by coloured concrete
slabs, the so called “stamped concrete”.
New and Old Attractions
Almost all buildings have been retained with
changed facades, and a number of available and
first in 2004 produced ride constructions could be
incorporated into the new Legoland. And it’s for
this reason that the first and only wooden coaster
can be found in a Legoland park. The Suspended
Coaster is also unique in the Lego-world.
Also the keeping of the
“mother of all waterskiing
shows” in the park is remarkable.
And not least,
the eager integration of
the park area and the under
conservation Cypress
Gardens in the new
theme park is worthy of a
tribute. However, other attractions
could not be
worked into the park: the
petting zoo was closed;
the elaborate sculptors
were put aside, the landing
pier for the park’s own
paddle steamer was permanently removed,
and many ride constructions that were believed
not to fit to the attraction portfolio were also
removed. Among them unfortunately and with
no disrespect, the historic wooden coaster
“Starliner” from the old master John Allen
(built: 1963), which was saved from the chainsaw
by Cypress-Gardens previous owner Kent
Buescher in 2005 from the closed Miracle Strip in
Panama City (Florida), and was reinstalled after
an ambitious renovation in 2007 only one year
before the insolvency of the park. There is no reliable
information available regarding the whereabouts
of the attraction by the way; officially a thirdparty
contractor was contracted to dismantle and
sell the ride. Apparently individual parts were
stored temporarily in a hall at Busch Gardens
Tampa, and contrary to other announcements that
the new owner of the reanimated Miracle Strip
wants to reopen the coaster on its old location in
2012, no contracts have been entered into.
The earlier Spinning Coaster “Galaxy Spin” from
Zamperla was sold to the Fun Spot USA Park in
Orlando, being replaced by a not mildly rough
playground and “Technicycle”
MORE PARKS
The opening of the sixth
Legoland in Malaysia will
take place shortly, following
the parks in Denmark, England,
Germany, California and
Florida. Additionally an announcement
has been made a
few weeks ago that the seventh
Legoland is to open in
2015 in Japan. And the plans
for another park in Dubai have
not been given up either, according
to official announcement.
Further along Korea and
two other new markets are
under discussion. ■
The “Wild Mouse
“Test Track” from Mack
The waterpark with Lego
design to open in 2012 earlier
(down, right)
and used construction from Mack Rides that previously
operated at Legoland Windsor, where a
new hotel there had to make way.
The Family Coaster “Okeechobee Rampage”
from Vekoma Rides has been retained, but
relocated a number of metres to the approximate
previous location of the station and lift area of the
“Starliner”. In addition, the attraction has not only
received a new paintjob, but also a grandiose
station building designed as a castle, and is now
presented as “The Dragon”. The Vekoma Inverted
Coaster “Swamp Thing” has also stayed at the
park and is now called “Flying School” with a new
processing building designed as an airport building
including a tower. The location and the
brusque ride characteristics remain the same.
Not Everything is a Success
Completely new attractions can be met up with in
the three back areas: “Lego Technic“ offers the
Wild Mouse “Test Track” from Mack, the lively “Jet
Skies”-double attraction by the name of “Aquazone
Wave Racers” from Zierer, and the small
major ride “Technicycle”, a “Magic Bike” from
Zamperla that has been set aside for the moment.
The “Imagination Zone” is dominated by the very
colourful “Kid Power Towers” from Heege. And in
the “Lego City” area, in addition to the Family
Suspended Coaster “Flying School” from Vekoma,
there is also the “Boating School” von SB International,
both Ford sponsored attractions “Driving
School” and “Jr. Driving School” from SB International,
as well as the fire brigade race “Rescue
Academy” from Zamperla are on offer.
Other new attractions in the ten theme areas at
Legoland Florida are the Caterpillar Ride “Merlin’s
Challenge” from Mack, the “Royal Joust” from
Metallbau Emmeln, both froghopper towers
“Beetel Bounce” from Zamperla, the large climbing
and sliding playground “The Forestmen’s
Hideout”, and the “Wells Fargo Film Town 4D
Theatre”.
There are however areas that really don’t fit to the
64

PORTRAIT
From left to right: The new
station building for the “Flying
School”, the theme area “Land
of Adventure” and the entrance
to the “Imagination Zone”
Lego-design or to the gardens, for example the
new “Land of Adventure”, where the retained
kiddie wooden coaster “Coastersaurus” (earlier
“Triple Hurricane”) from Martin & Vleminckx is not
at fault, but more the cheap gunned concrete
facades on the interesting Darkride attraction
“Lost Kingdom Adventure” from Sally Corp.
(theming, animatronics) and Bertazzon (transport
system) and the play out, which by the way is
operated by an English licence holder. Regrettable
also is the completely misfired new production
of the best waterskiing show in the world for
decades, which is only a shadow of its former self:
instead of art and acrobatics there is now only a
clumsy third-class show, which however appears
to be well accepted by the main target group.
Interestingly all passengers on the “Island in the
Sky” are advised that the 30 metre high Intamin
viewing tower was the first of its kind when erected
in the year 1971. And against all expectations,
there are no attempts to keep quiet about the past
history of the park, and why should there be?
After all, Florida’s oldest park had over 1.5 million
visitors annually in its heyday. This of course was
long ago, in the 1980s, when Cypress Gardens
belonged to the Busch-Gardens- and SeaWorld
Groups. Naturally the Merlin Entertainments
Group, which since 2005 has The Blackstone
Group as parent company is glad to be
connected. And so the circle closed when in 2009
it became known that SeaWorld Parks &
Entertainment also came under ownership. And it
all appears to be hugely successful, as the
enthusiasm for the small and educational plastic
bricks of which over 50 million pieces were used
in the new park, appears to have no have no
bounds in the USA as well. Although Legoland
Florida, which is located geographically exactly
between SeaWorld in the tourist metropolis of
Orlando and Busch Gardens Tampa on the Golf
of Mexico, has refrained from an official joint
marketing platform, shuttle buses are already
travelling between the related parks.
MERLIN
The coffers of the British company
Merlin Entertainments
Group are full: in the fiscal year
2010, the company could
book revenue of 1,250 US-
Dollars. This is another reason
for wanting to have another
mainstay in Orlando. The
group plans to erect an
entertainment complex with
opening date in 2013 with a
130 m high Ferris Wheel
(“Orlando Eye”), a Madame
Tussauds Wax Museum, and a
SeaLife aquarium on the earlier
property of the Mercado shopping
centre on International
Drive, the heart of the tourist
metropolis.
The new version of the
“Southern Bells” is undisputedly
less attractive: coloured plastic
bricks instead of the pretty
ladies in traditional Southern
State outfits
The former world famous
waterskiing show has also been
retained however with
completely different focus
(down, right the actual scene)
Steep Admittance Prices
The fact that Legoland Florida not only has to, but
wants to compete with the mega-parks in the
amusement stronghold of Orlando, which with
over 40 million annual guests is the most visited
city in the USA, has been proved by the pricing
policy: with a day ticket of 75 Dollars for adults
and 65 Dollars for children (plus approximatey 5
Dollars tax), one is orientating on the theme parks
of Disney and Universal.
Additionally to these prices come the almost
impertinently high parking fees even for American
proportions of between 12 and 20 Dollars. One
third of the complete parking area is reserved for
the luxurious “Valet Parking”, and from that one
must presume that it’s still all just a simple parking
procedure. From 2012 an additional 12 Dollars
nett is to be added to the price for the visit to
the neighbouring water park. Whether or not there
will be enough families in the long-term that are
willing to pay out so much money for a day visit
remains to be seen. Although the Lego bricks
have educational attributes that Disney has had
to deal with over the past years, it’s doubtful that
the little Lego-people have the same magical pull
as the mouse family. This is reflected in the obviously
reserved prognosis of 1.5 million visitors
in the first year of operation, which leans towards
the real visitor number of other Legoland parks,
and is an estimation, in view of the location and
the all-year-round opening (Thursdays to Mondays),
which may well be a little pessimistic.
The Preliminary Summary
With Legoland Florida, Merlin Entertainments has
finally managed to tap into a highly sensitive but
also very profitable market, that won’t come about
a second time in the world’s amusement industry.
The danger of failure should be – despite the total
loss of the operator of the predecessor park) –
very minimal, when at the same time the closeness
to Orlando alone gives no guarantees, as the
past has shown.
The courage to retain historic elements and available
ride constructions is commendable, and
make this Legoland Park into something very
special. Through this action this park, in comparison
to others with stringent theming, offers inter-
66

esting contrasts between Lego and garden,
between colourful and green, between plastic and
nature.
Due to the variety on offer, Legoland Florida is without
a doubt the most exciting Legoland Park for
adults, but due to the long paths within the park area
also more of an exhausting adventure for the main
target group of 3 to 12 years of age. And as at all
Legoland Parks, there is almost nothing attractive
on offer for the young adolescent. And for sure the
park admittance price of 80 or alternatively 70 Dollars
in relation to the opening times of a minimum of
five hours (in low season between 10:00 a.m. and
5 p.m.) is by far the highest in Orlando and even the
whole of North America, which, particularly when
taking the background into consideration that it’s
not a newly erected park, cannot be justified. The
new Legoland Florida is the most varied Legoland
ever, but at the same time most probably the most
expensive theme park in the world. If it all works out
in this aspect remains to be seen.
The Extended Price Comparison
During the last EAS event in London, Nick Varney,
Chief Executive of
Merlin Entertainments
called attention
to the fact
that a visit to a
theme park is not
as expensive as
often thought.
According to his
opinion they are in fact even underpriced in
Europe, but there are continued complaints
particularly in Germany. As is known, this trade
we can align with the views of the likeable
Nick Varney without fuss or quibble, we would just
the same like to present his list from London of
exemplary amusement activities, and at the same
time extend it. It remains to be noted that the
calculated hourly price for Legoland Florida is
based on low season opening times, and is only
marginally higher than that of a Universal ticket at
the same time of the year, and that the determined
average daily price of the most visited theme
parks were referred to. (All rates of exchange from
TECHNOLOGY
The “Flyboard” in test
operation shortly before
TÜV inspection
DyMoRides have exclusively
unveiled a working demonstrator
of their new larger “Flyboard
Flying Theatre” to
Kirmes & Park Revue. The 40
passenger ride builds on the
success of the first “Flyboard”,
developed under the
direction of David Vatcher,
located at Vienna’s Prater Park
in more ways than just its size.
hour. They’re also marketing the option to
have a single pre-show area, but with 2 motion
platforms to get closer to the 1100 p.p.h
desired at larger facilities.
Over the first 3 years of operation “Vienna
Built in 2008, “Vienna Airlines” at Prater Park is a Airlines” required only around 500 Euro of spare
33 passenger ride where riders board a motion parts. Learning from this, DyMoRides CEO of
platform and take flight over Vienna, experiencing a Technology and Projects, David Vatcher, says they
wide range of motion and sensory effects such as aim to achieve “zero spare parts over 10 years” for
wind and scent whilst watching a CGI movie. the new “Flyboard” system. While this has an obvious
When building the original “Flyboard” the plan was cost advantage it will maximise customer satisfaction
as the rides will experience minimal downtime.
always to go bigger and today’s 40 passenger
model isn’t the limit. Testing has gone better than In addition to having a low maintenance cost the
expected and DyMoRides are already marketing “Flyboards” utilise regenerative energy capture to
the option of a 47 passenger version. The need for the maximum extent, helping further reduce operating
costs and improve a park’s “green” credentials.
higher capacity was the driving force behind building
larger versions as many parks target 550 or 1100 The motors that are used to move the platform require
energy to raise it, but when the platform lowers
passengers per hour as critical points for capacity.
Running with a 3 minute film and a 2 minute simple it does so under gravity and this allows the motors
load/unload cycle means a single 47 passenger to generate electricity. This electricity can either be
model can realistically achieve 560 passengers per used to instantly power any other motor that requires
it, or can be fed back into the parks general electricity
supply.
DyMoRides Director of Engineering, Simon James,
has made crucial enhancements in the new control
system so it operates at 100Hz, more than 3 times
faster than traditional motion systems. The benefit
of this is that the motion data on the ride updates
quicker and more often, which leads to a smoother
and more precise experience. The vibration effects
can also now run at up to 100Hz offering riders much
more realistic to real world scenarios, for example
simulating complex engine vibrations from aeroplanes
and turbulence.
Despite all these changes many innovative aspects
of the original version remain. Passengers still stand
unrestrained throughout the ride, something that is
crucial to the experience. Standing allows riders to

shift their body weight during the ride cycle, linking
the human motor system with the human sensory
system. This helps add to the realism of flying that
in turn reduces the risk of motion sickness. In fact
there have been no reported cases of motion sickness
for riders of “Vienna Airlines” in 3 years of
operation.
The projector remains mounted on board the ride
platform, so moves with it. An on board projector
means the ride motion is always in perfect sync with
the film. Simulators with an off board set up will often
need to have the ride platform and projector resynced
regularly to minimise the onset of motion
sickness. The new larger projection screen remains
curved as it keeps a fixed focal length for the projector
during movement ensuring the image never
goes out of focus; out of focus films are known to
contribute to the onset of motion sickness.
The combination of tried and tested technology and
these latest enhancements has lead to the creation
of one of the most realistic and pleasurable motion
simulators on offer. It makes a change to ride a
simulator where there's no fear of suffering from motion
sickness. Anyone who isn't a fan of simulators is
likely to be converted by the “Flyboard”.
David Vatcher reports that the 2011 IAAPA Expo was
his most successful
show in the last 10
years. His company
made several positive
leads, with park
reps and owners
lined up to visit their
site in Wales to take
a test flight on the
demonstrator.
Vatcher is hopeful of
announcing half a
dozen installations
in Asia and North
America for 2013
very soon. ■
10 YEARS DISNEY SEA AND UNIVERSAL STUDIOS JAPAN
Following the havoc causing
earthquake, tsunami, and the
still not resolved atomic catastrophe
at the beginning of the
year, the Japanese amusement
branch naturally couldn’t make a
good start for the season. However,
two of Japan's most visited
theme parks in the world
celebrated their 10 th anniversaries
during the past months.
Universal Studios Japan opened
in March 2001, followed by
Tokyo Disney Sea in September.
Text & Photos: Marcus Gaines
Photos on this page:
Universal Studios Japan
Universal Studios Japan, situated in Osaka,
was the first Universal Studios theme park
erected outside North America. Its opening season
broke attendance records, becoming the
fastest growing new park welcoming 11 million
guests. A short lived claim, as Tokyo Disney Sea
beat that record just a few months later by
welcoming the same number in a shorter period.
Universal Studios Japan is the most attended of
the 4 Universal parks around the world, attracting
8 million visitors in the region, which ranks it
number 9 in the Global Attractions Attendance
Report.
Universal Studios Japan
To celebrate the park’s anniversary, Senior Vice
President Mike Davis wanted to focus on the
guest experience, and the atmosphere at the
park. “We didn't want to add a new ride for our
anniversary season, as it's just another ride the
following year.” To that end, a unique multimillion
dollar show was created, the biggest in the park’s
history. “Dreams Are Universal” combines a live
stage show with a parade, and tells the story of
a typical Japanese family’s perfect day in the
park. Artistic interludes and characters from the
famous Universal cinema success combined
with a heartfelt song bring tears to the visitor’s
eyes. The show ends with the revealing of a giant
glittering birthday cake, with all 90 cast members
joining the family and characters on stage. A
fabulous fireworks display is launched from
around the centre and surrounding buildings during
the show.
The Japanese pop group “GreeeeN” produced
a special celebratory song for the park called
“GOOD LUCKY!!!!!” which is featured in many of
72

the shows at the park. And there are also smaller
shows, for example the new “Hello Kitty
Anniversary Concert -Dancing Forever” and
surprise interactions that are not listed on the
show schedule and are intended to be spontaneous
surprises. One example is a dance party in
the street linking in the guests. Before the audience
knows what's happening, a live musical dance
party is underway. As soon as the event is over,
performers disappear into the crowd as if nothing
has happened.
Work is also well underway on a new area that will
replace the “Land of Oz” section, closed in early
2011. “Universal Wonderland” will be home to
characters from “Hello Kitty”, “Sesame Street”
and “Snoopy”. And when the Japanese economy
has recovered, construction will at long last
begin on one of the longest in planning second
park.
Disneyland Tokyo
Meanwhile the 10 th anniversary celebrations of
Tokyo Disney Sea, under the slogan “Be Magical”,
have been scheduled to run from September
4 th to March 19 th 2012. Originally due to
commence on April 23 rd , celebrations were delayed
due to the earthquake and tsunami that hit
north east Japan on March 11 th .
Following Disneyland in California and Walt Disney
World in Florida, Tokyo Disney Resort now
has its own “Fantasmic”-show. Based on the concept
of the 15 year old US version, the technically
impressive Tokyo show has been completely reimagined
through the use of water fountains,
projections, lasers, fireworks and live performers,
recreating Mickey's dreams, and takes place on
the waters of Mediterranean harbour.
July also saw the opening of a new ride:
“Jasmine's Flying Carpets” opened in the
“Arabian Coast” area of the park. It's the
same ride as those opened as “The Magic
Carpet of Aladdin” at Magic Kingdom
Florida, and “Flying Carpets Over
Agrabah” at Walt Disney Studios Park
Paris. However this ride is more intricately
themed than the earlier versions, and
has a spectacular lighting package.
Although the attention is very much on
Tokyo Disney Sea this year, Tokyo
Disneyland hasn't been forgotten. Two
new attractions have been added for
2011. “PhilharMagic” opened in January,
while “Cinderella’s Fairy Tale Hall”, which
has also been opened, is a unique Walkthrough.
“Toy Story Midway Mania” is
also due to open in Tokyo Disney Sea in
2012. ■
