The Club’s crest & bulletin name reflect ‘Odin’ (Anglo-Saxon ‘Woden’), the ancient Nordic God of Wisdom.

Odin had two ravens called Hugin and Munin (Thought and Memory) who flew forth every day

and returned at night to tell him what they had seen, so contributing to his wisdom.

able to meet and hear from Antonia in December. She will leave for Japan in mid

Shelter Box at Westfield Woden on Saturday 27 July

We will be putting on a Shelter Box display at the Woden Westfield shopping

centre to promote Shelter Box and our club. We need members to be on the

roster. Please tell Debbie when you will be available for an hour or so between 9

AM and 3 PM: debbie.whitfield@bigpond.com 0447 033 222.

Upcoming Meeting Venues

Due to the low number of members attending our meetings during winter, we

will not be meeting at the Yacht Club on the following nights:

7 th and 21 st August, 4 th and 25 th September 9 th and 23 rd October.

We would like to schedule some alternative activities and opportunities for

fellowship on these nights (such as the viewing of Sarah Brown's art exhibition

last week). If members have a suggestion for a restaurant to visit, a show to see,

a place to visit or simply some home hosting in the weeks that we will not be

meeting at the Yacht Club, please contact Debbie Whitfield:

paintings with 10% of the proceeds of sales going to Western District dialysis at

Kiwirrkurra, WA.

Emily Casey talked about the details of the

aspect and technique of the paintings. A red

wash of the canvas gave the whole painting a

desert atmosphere and also allowed Sarah to be

extremely fast in displaying her desert subject.

Emily does not know any other artist who is as

productive as Sarah. The 45 paintings captured

the heart and soul of the western desert.

Emily also gave us an introduction to the

Gallery which is supported by the ACT

Government and has rooms for practising artists,

for classes and display galleries. Displays are

usually changed every 3 to 4 weeks. As well as Sarah’s paintings at the

moment, there is a display of paintings of Lake Eyre by Patricia Wheatstone and

a showing of short indigenous films as part of NAIDOC Week.

The Griffith Vietnamese Restaurant is a fine example of Saigon cuisine that

blends Vietnamese and French heritage. The chef, Som Nguyen, backed up by

his uncle Tan, the waiter, provided us with a splendid range of tasty food at a

very reasonable rate. Many of us made certain we left with a complete menu for

future reference.

Kiwirrkurra Donation

After reading about our work at Kiwirrkurra, honorary member Frank Macklin

sent us a cheque to help complete the work on the nurses quarters.

Thank you Frank for your very generous donation.

Hospital Wishing Well

Noel Hart and Jeff Ibbotson met with Kim Philpot from the Canberra Hospital

Foundation to discuss the hospital wishing well. The wishing well is operational,

but signage and access are not ideal. We will work with the Foundation to better

promote the wishing well, and Rotary generally.
