Defensive Notes
rETURN oF THE TAKEAWAY
The New Mexico defense has a long way to go before it can compare to Texas
A&M’s “Wrecking Crew” defense that Coach Bob Davie made famous as defensive
coordinator from 1989-93. However ...
UNM forced four turnovers in the opener, scoring on two of those four. The Lobos
forced 13 turnovers in all of 2011. They had two interceptions against the Jaguars;
that’s one fewer than the defense had in all of ’11 — three interceptions.
On the season, the Lobos rank 24th nationally with an average of plus-1.0 turnovers
per game. They have five takeaways and have committed just two turnovers.
Junior inside linebacker Dallas Bollema had a busy day against Texas Tech on Sept.
15. The Artesia, N.M., native had a career-high 14 tackles against the Red Raiders,
including two tackles for loss and a pass breakup.
Bollema had 13 solo tackles on the evening, which is the third-most in the NCAA this
season and the most by a Lobo since Carmen Messina had 14 solo tackles vs. San
Diego State last season. He leads the team with 24 tackles on the season, which is
No. 10 in the Mountain West.
In high school, Bollema was teammates with current Oklahoma starting quarterback
Landry Jones.
