New Mexico has used 30 first-year players through the first three games of the season,
including 18 true freshman.
New Mexico had 12 true freshmen earn playing time on the trip to Texas, whose crowd
of 100,119 was the most ever to watch a Lobo game.
Twenty-seven Lobos saw the first action of their collegiate careers in the season
opener against Southern.
Freshmen scored five touchdowns in the win. True freshman quarterback Cole
Gautsche scored on TD runs of 7 and 47 yards. Redshirt freshman Jhurell Pressley
scored on a 5-yard run. True freshman cornerback Cranston Jones had a 39-yard
interception return for a TD and true freshman wide receiver Carlos Wiggins found
the end zone on a 7-yard run.
Lobos don’t beat the Lobos
Coach Bob Davie has preached from day one that his program cannot make selfinflicted
mistakes if it wants to be successful in 2012.
UNM is ranked second in the Mountain West and tied for 24th nationally in turnover
margin, averaging plus-1.0 per game. The Lobos also lead the conference and are
10th in the nation in lowest penalty yardage with a 30.7-yard average.
New Mexico had one penalty for 5 yards and zero turnovers against Southern in the
season opener.
Road woes
The Lobos have a 24-game road losing streak heading into Saturday’s game at New
Mexico State, the nation’s longest. UNM has not won a road game since defeating
New Mexico State 35-24 on Sept. 27, 2008. New Mexico hasn’t defeated an opponent
outside New Mexico since a 20-17 triumph at San Diego State on Oct. 20, 2007.
it takes a village to camp
The Lobos again made the 180-mile trek south to the mountain village of Ruidoso
(population 8,010) for two weeks of practice in August. It was the first trip for coach Bob
Bob Davie and his staff, but the program’s third trip overall was significant because of
the wildfires that damaged areas around the village in June.
The football program joined forces with the Albuquerque Isotopes Triple-A baseball
team, Cumulus Media in Albuquerque and The Red Cross of New Mexico for a two-day
“New Mexico Fire Relief” drive on July 6-7. The event produced more than $5,000 in
donations toward those affected by New Mexico wildfires.
Hello, ‘Branch Field at University Stadium’
University Stadium underwent a surface change from natural grass to FieldTurf this
season. The replacement process was completed just more than a week before the
2012 season opener against Southern University.
On July 31, UNM announced that the field would be named “Branch Field,” after
University of New Mexico alumni Margaret and Turner Branch donated $1.5 million to
Lobo Athletics. The naming rights for “Branch Field” are effective for the next 15 years.
on The Prowl
In 2012, the Lobo football team will begin a ritual of walking through the “Howl Zone”
— the northern section of the Stadium West parking lot — on a designated path to
its locker room at the Tow Diehm Complex on the south end of University Stadium.
Lobo fans will get to cheer on their team and show their school spirit and support to
start the team’s pregame routine.
