T E L E V I S I O N A N D V I D E O

austria came late to television – the first broadcasts were not until 1956; private television didn’t launch until 2003 – and remains dominated by its big neighbour to the northwest. Indeed, the

basic structure of austrian television can be seen as a reduced version of the German model dominated by a national tV company, OrF (Österreichischer rundfunk, with three channels, plus an

additional one for sports) and another national channel (3Sat) drawing on German, Swiss and austrian programmes.

OrF still has the biggest market share – around 40% for OrF1 and OrF2. there are also seven commercial channels, led by atV, with around 25% of the market; regional channels based in Innsbruck,

Salzburg and Graz; and affiliates of major German channels ProSieben Sat1, kabel eins, MtV, rtL, Viva and Vox, many of which broadcast the same programmes as their German equivalents,

with just the advertisements distinguishing the austrian service from the German one. Like its German equivalents, OrF has a commitment to providing financial support for feature films, as

well as commissioning tV films from up-and-coming filmmakers (Michael Haneke’s early films were made for the broadcaster).

national broadcaster OrF and leading private company atV occasionally show films in mid-afternoon and late at night, but less frequently than they used to; and the full Sky range of movie

channels (Sky Cinema, Sky Cinema Hd, Sky Comedy, Sky emotion, Sky nostalgie, Sky Select, etc) supply their German schedules via cable or satellite, as does ProSieben via Sat1 or kabel eins.

Most of which adds up to the fact that German films are no better or worse served on austrian pay-television than they are in Germany.

according to figures collected by media research organisation Gfk International in 2011, dVd and Blu-ray sales have fared better per head of the population in austria than they have in Germany,

and the country’s overall video turnover amounted to €186.29 million – considerably more than the overall theatrical box-office figure – with €29 million accounted for by Blu-ray. Since then,

while dVd sales and rentals are dropping, Blu-ray still seems to be a growth market: Blu-ray retail turnover has more than doubled since 2009 and rental transactions have more than trebled,

while prices have come down by 25%.

detailed figures are not available in other categories for those years, but a 2010 report by the austrian Film Institute reckons that, in terms of dVd business, austria may have exceeded the much

prized threshold of 10% of the German market. the Institute also claims that “a small market like austria offers special opportunities for films outside the mainstream in the dVd sector [and

that] dVds play a decisive role as a cultural medium for regionally specific austrian content”. thus while austrian films account for only 0.1% of the available dVds, they account for as much as

6% of the dVd rental and retail market. this, of course, is not especially good news for German films, many of which are in the rare position, on the austrian market, of being part of the mainstream.

G E N E R A L N O T E S

It is difficult if not impossible to distinguish statistically between austria as a discreet territory and austria as part of the German-speaking market as supplied by major German-based distributors.

Hollywood movies are generally released day-and-date with Germany, or if not within a month of German release, by the same majors who open them there (Sony, Warner Bros., Walt disney

Studios and Centfox, the austrian affiliate of the Hollywood studio). the independent market is dominated at the commercial end by Constantin, which had 49 films (11.6% of the total number released)

in 2012. Constantin is a separate company from its German sister but handles much the same range of commercial German-language titles. Its market share in 2012 was 15.2% – larger

than that of disney, Fox, Sony or Warner.

In terms of successful German arthouse films, the austrian market leaders are Filmladen (40 titles, or 9.5% of the total released in 2012), Polyfilm (39/9.3%) and Stadtkino (24/5.7%), with relative

newcomer thimfilm (43/10.2%) overhauling them in 2012. austria is a vibrant market for arthouse cinema and has a good record of acquiring independent German titles – which is, of course,

hardly surprising, given the shared language. On the other hand, the market is small, at only around 12% of the German one, and many of the German films play in only a handful of cinemas –

sometimes just one – and may not travel outside the cosmopolitan capital, Vienna. this accounts for the large number of titles listed in each of the years above for which admission figures are

not available.

Overall, the average box office for a German film in austria over the period surveyed is around €230,000, with much of the combined total (between 10% and 15% of austrian box office) accounted

for by films that also did well in Germany: popular titles such as dIe WILden kerLe, the WICkIe films ZWeIOHrkÜken, kOnFerenZ der tIere, kOkOWaaH, tHe tHree MuSketeerS,

turkISCH FÜr anFÄnGer and CLOud atLaS. Only eight of the German films released over the past three years have sold over 100,000 tickets, however.

television is likewise dominated by the major German independent chains, especially in the movies-on-tV market, which seems to be unusually slim in austria. However, the home entertainment

business is holding up better than in most european countries – dVd sales were pretty much steady over the three-year period surveyed, while Blu-ray sales continued to increase.
