SMEs in Horizon 2020
Why are they important?
• 99% of all European business are SMEs
• 85% of net new jobs in the EU between 2002 and
2010 were created by small and medium sized
enterprises (SMEs)
• SMEs are quick to adapt to and exploit new market
opportunities
• Taking innovative ideas to the market
The Analysis
Research and
Innovation

SME innovation strategy
Strong relationship between innovation and
internationalisation!
SMEs that participate in European projects:
• Increase their R&D an innovation capability due to the possibility
to tap into the best knowledge in the Union
• Get access to international networks
• Get access to new markets and customers
• Have access to qualified staff
• Increase their reputation and visibility on an EU level
Policy Research and
Innovation

Good project results but little
exploitation….
• Need to address this in Horizon 2020
• WP 2013 increased focus on innovative actions closer to
the market activities i.e. demonstration actions, pilots,
etc.
• Calls in line with societal challenges to develop new
markets and tackle citizens' concerns.
