Marketing & Development Manager, Shannon Erne Waterway, 1997 - 2001<br />

The flagship cross border multi-agency project of the 1990’s. It’s legacy still<br />

obvious in the economy for the western border region. His responsibilities<br />

included devising and delivering a global marketing/communications strategy<br />

for the islands inland waterways together with managing the IFI / UK-RoI<br />

Government Capital Development Programme for the corridor region. Given<br />

the cross border nature of the territory peace building was an important pillar<br />

of the role.<br />

Marketing Manager / Director, Armagh Regional Tourism Consortium,<br />

1993 - 1997<br />

A local government post responsible for building and branding the tourism<br />

offering of NI third city and district. The multi faceted role was largely<br />

focused on heritage while empowering the five major built heritage attraction<br />

of the area. As part of his Armagh City & District Council experience he<br />

was co-opted for two years as Director of Armagh Together 1994/’95 the<br />

largest ever cross community festival in NI. The festival received extensive<br />

worldwide recognition for its peace building legacy.<br />

Experience Summary<br />

Tom has worked in senior operational and general management positions in<br />

a multinational where he was responsible for the engineering, R&D, capital<br />

expenditure, technical development and continuous improvement functions<br />

of a group of manufacturing companies operating in both the domestic<br />

and export markets. Tom has extensive experience in the development<br />

and commercialisation of products in the Telecommunications, Data, OEM,<br />

Energy Utilities and Automotive sectors.<br />

With both national and international work experience Tom has significant<br />

technical experience in mechanical, electrical, machine and product design<br />

and material development across multiple industry sectors, technologies and<br />

processes in large, medium and small companies.<br />

• Tom has led and managed several raw material and polymer<br />

development programmes, working on innovative and technically<br />

challenging developments with international suppliers and technical<br />

specialists. These projects largely led to technical performance<br />

improvements for industrial, telecommunications, automotive and energy<br />

distribution products as well as improved manufacturing metrics and a<br />

reduction in manufacturing costs.<br />

• Tom has worked closely with large Utility Companies in developing new<br />

product specifications and running extensive prototyping programmes<br />

that have ultimately led to significant changes in product offerings and<br />

installed service performance.<br />

• Through his years of industrial experience Tom has led multiple<br />

Innovation & R&D projects, introducing several new product ranges,<br />

from initial innovation requirements through to full manufacturing and<br />

commercialisation for both the domestic and export markets, including<br />

UK, Mainland Europe and the US.<br />

• Working in the Data sector, Tom led the establishment of an R&D centre<br />

which led to the establishment of a new export sales channel and further<br />

In the years spanning my career I was associated with successful launches<br />

of such well known brands in Ireland as Tefal, Sodastream, Milupa(Aptamil),<br />

Bob Martin and Richard Burbidge DIY Mouldings.<br />

In my last role as sales and marketing director of a major DIY distributor a<br />

very large portion of my responsibilities was focused on driving the business<br />

as a credible player in the DIY sector. In a fifteen year period I drove sales<br />

from €2m to €20m by mid 2007. A major contribution to this growth came<br />

as a direct result of strategically planned export sales to both the UK and<br />

Northern Ireland. Each year an average of 20% of incremental sales was<br />

generated from this export strategy.<br />

In that same period over 80% of my customer base were family run<br />

businesses, some second generation, partnerships, sole traders and new<br />

start-ups. This gave me a good insight into the operations of SME’s and the<br />

challenges they meet on a day to day basis.<br />

Since I retired in 2007 I have acted as a business mentor to clients wishing<br />

to devise a route to market or identify and develop new markets and share<br />

with them real life experience of what is involved.<br />

Confectionery, Household/DIY and Food.
