A D i a l o g u e o n „ S E L F R E L I A N C E ‟ A panel discussion session on the topic of „self reliance‟ was held at IoBM. This event was organized by the Egalitarians Economics Society of IoBM, in collaboration with BUSINESS PLUS TV. Some prominent economists of our country shared their views on the basis of their vast experience on the above mentioned topic. The Panel included (1) Dr. Shahid Hassan Siddiqui, chairman, The Research Institute of Islamic Banking and Finance (2) Mr. Ashraf Janjua, Senior Fellow, IoBM. (3) Mr. Muzammil Aslam, Group Economist at KASB and (4) Mr. Saim Ali. The mediator on this session was a very well know media person Mr. Shahzaib Khanzada. =================================================================================================== B r a i n s t o r m i n g o n t h e C a p i t a l G a i n s T a x Egalitarians Economic Society of IoBM organized a speaker session on the topic of “Capital Gains Tax: Implications for Investment and growth” The guest speaker was Mr. Shoaib Ahmed Farid, Financial Advisor, Messrs. Inter Dress (Pvt.) Ltd. He believed that imposing CGT (capital Gains Tax) is currently not justified from either economic or fairness point of view. If imposition is indispensable it must be based on a well designed system of CGT. The CGT must be initiated from the stock market and CGT revenue be applied for debt reduction. The session ended on a positive note with Ms. Rasha thanking the speaker and the audience. Mr. Jamal Zubairi, HOD, Economics Department, presented a memento to the speaker. =================================================================================================== P O N D E R I N G O V E R T H E E C O N O M Y On March 02 2010, a seminar was organized by the “Egalitarians”, the Economics Society of IoBM in collaboration with Business plus, on the topic “Economic Activities in Pakistan”. The show was hosted by Shahzeb Khanzada and the guest speakers were: Dr. Shahida Wizarat, Economist / HoD, Economics Department, IoBM, Mr. Ikhtiar Baig, Economist / Advisor to Prime Minister, Mr. Saleem Ghouri, Chairman, Net-Sol, Mr. Haseeb Khan (Senator), CEO Brookes pharmaceutical. Dr. Shahida Wizarat was asked to give her views on what do we lack in our economy. She replied saying that the main problem we face is that Pakistan‟s policies are not made by us. We just follow what we are asked to do by the IMF or the World Bank and more precisely by the USA. If we formulate our own policies and try to become self reliant and independent it will bring a boost to our economy. Dr. Iftikhar Baig added there are two major obstacles that hamper Pakistan‟s economic growth: the deteriorating law and order situation and power shortage. Mr. Baig further said that even in such tiresome conditions our entrepreneurs are working hard. They have arranged their own resources to overcome these obstacles. Mr. Ghouri added to this that a nation is based upon its entrepreneurs and unfortunately we have very less of them. Our new generation is more jobs oriented. They tend to do jobs rather than starting up their own business. With this answer a new question cropped up that why we are still not able to overcome these obstacles? Mr. Haseeb said the two major root causes of our industrial decline are feudalism and politics in our system. The discussion was further heated up by the questions and comments of audience. A student commented “even after taking loads of loans we are still in such a bad condition; if we Pakistanis can live without sugar, wheat and rice we can also live without foreign aid. At least we would be saved from taking orders from others.” Another student said that we should ask multimillionaires to invest within the country instead of saving their money in Swiss Banks. Mr. Ashraf Janjua, Senior fellow at IoBM and Ex- Deputy Governor SBP, said that unless we do not have a proper infrastructure we cannot bring investment in our country. First we have to support those industries which are already working here. They should be provided with adequate facilities. If our old investors are successful, new investors will automatically get attracted towards our market. 2
IoBM makes the difference at CIMA Global Challenge Out of 50 teams competing in the initial stages from universities from Lahore and Karachi, four teams qualified for CIMA Global Business Challenge (GBC) Pakistan Final 2010 in Karachi out of which two were from the Institute of Business Management (IoBM) and two from LUMS. IoBM won the Country Final with LUMS as the runner-up of this competition. IoBM earned the honors of representing Pakistan in Malaysia with participation from all over the world including from the UK, Ireland, Hong Kong, Sri Lanka, India, China, Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, South Africa, UAE and Australia. IoBM team members comprised Tajdar Ahmed Hashmi (leader), Zaid Imad, Sana Waqar and Hayat Omer Malik with Ms. Shazia Farooq as their guide and mentor. =================================================================================================== Management Society’s Hallmarks PLAN, ORGANIZE, LEAD, CONTROL „Let‟s Polca‟ was the maiden event organized and conducted by the Management Society of IoBM, with This was followed by a series of activities, the first of which was the different ways of sitting Umair Jaliawala as the guest down.
