IoBM commemorates<br />

World Environment Day <strong>2010</strong><br />

UN has declared <strong>2010</strong> as the International Year <strong>of</strong> Biodiversity to stress the value<br />

<strong>of</strong> biodiversity for human well-being, reflect on our achievements to safeguard it<br />

and encourage efforts to reduce the rate <strong>of</strong> biodiversity loss. IoBM organized a<br />

seminar on Environment Day on 5th, June <strong>2010</strong> at its premises. It was attended by<br />

IoBM Executive Directors, Government Executives, Heads <strong>of</strong> Departments,<br />

Faculty members and students. Talks were given by invited environmental experts<br />

and IoBM faculty on the occasion. Mr. Talib Karim, Executive Director<br />

Academics, in his opening remarks welcomed the participants and highlighted the<br />

contributions <strong>of</strong> IoBM in creating an ecologically greener and cleaner environment within the environs <strong>of</strong> the<br />

<strong>Institute</strong>. He underscored the significance <strong>of</strong> environment and informed the audience on an innovative MBA<br />

program being <strong>of</strong>fered by IoBM on Environment and Renewable Energy.<br />

Dr. Akhlaq Ahmed said that World Environment Day (WED) was formed by the UN General Assembly in 1972. WED is hosted<br />

annually by a different city. This year‟s city is Rwanda – a city with unique biodiversity. The theme <strong>of</strong> WED <strong>2010</strong> is “Many Species.<br />

One Planet. One Future.” Dr. Shahid Amjad focused on diverse ecosystems <strong>of</strong> Pakistan<br />

including 668 birds (25 threatened), 198 freshwater fishes (29 endemic, 1 threatened), over 1000<br />

species <strong>of</strong> Marine fish, 177 reptiles (13 endemic, 6 threatened), 174 mammals (6 endemic, 20<br />

threatened). Mr. Izhar Hussain from IBA talked about economic losses sustained by the<br />

health sector due to poorly maintained pharmaceutical drugs transported and stored in<br />

uncontrolled temperature environments. Mr. Parvez Jamil advocated academia and<br />

corporate sector sharing with print and electronic media a common platform with<br />

feedback and follow up on environmental awareness and information that trickles<br />

down from specialized seminars to the common man in common man‟s language.<br />

Mr. Sheikh Abdul Qadir, HinoPak motors spoke on waste water management system devised and fabricated by<br />

HinoPak engineers. He emphasized that the solid waste was sorted at source and recycled by converting them into<br />

vehicle parts being assembled at the plant. Mr. Moin Uddin Ali Khan spoke on Green Economy and Green Supply<br />

Chain <strong>Management</strong>. Organizations that make the difference must have Environmental management systems. Amid<br />

Green energy jobs creation will enhance. IoBM is starting MBA Environment and Energy <strong>Management</strong> program<br />

from fall <strong>2010</strong> to provide specialized human resource. Dr. Mirza Arshad Ali Baig, Ex Director General, PCSIR<br />

highlighted issues in degradation and shirking <strong>of</strong> Indus Delta. As environmental<br />

services that were provided by the Indus delta have been impaired, some amount <strong>of</strong><br />

freshwater must be made available downstream Indus for natural replenishment <strong>of</strong><br />

sediments and mangrove ecosystem and research is carried out on Water Budget <strong>of</strong><br />

Arabian Sea focusing coastal areas <strong>of</strong> Sindh. Mr. Mir Hussain Ali, Secretary<br />

Environment and Alternate Energy, Government <strong>of</strong> Sindh in his capacity as the chief<br />

guest was <strong>of</strong> the view that the proceedings <strong>of</strong> the seminar are circulated and similar<br />

meetings or a follow up seminar be organized to evaluate the action initiated by<br />

different organizations in conserving the environment. He applauded the efforts <strong>of</strong><br />

IoBM in initiating MBA program in Environment and Renewable Energy program. At the concluding session Mr.<br />

Talib Karim presented a memento each to the invited speakers. The concluding session was followed by lunch.<br />

Eco-fest at CHS<br />

Eco-Festival was organized on 22 nd <strong>of</strong> April, <strong>2010</strong><br />

at the Creek High School (CHS), IoBM campus.<br />
