SSRU’S MISSION This Annual Report provides an overview of activities in the Social Science Research Unit during 2012. It presents our achievements in conducting research and sharing the findings, and in teaching, and introduces you to the staff who have made these possible. We hope you enjoy reading about our work. Founded in 1990, the Social Science Research Unit (SSRU) is part of the Institute of Education, University of London. The Unit’s mission is to engage in and otherwise promote rigorous, ethical and participative social research, and to support evidence-informed public policy and practice across a range of domains, including education, health and welfare. INTRODUCTION BY THE DIRECTOR Twenty-two years after its founding SSRU continues to thrive as a research unit. We continue to fulfil, as best we can, our founder Ann Oakley’s vision of a centre committed to social justice and undertaking applied social research to make a difference to people’s lives. The Unit is made up of five overlapping streams of work which differ in both topic and methodology. The work ranges from conceptual work in the sociology of childhood, to the studies of process and outcome of the reproductive, evaluation and perspectives and participation streams, as well as the methods of research synthesis and research use of the EPPI-Centre. Please do read all about the fascinating work of these five streams in the pages of this report. In addition, and not included in this report, are two new projects announced at the end of 2012 and not starting until 2013. Both are for the National Institute for Clinical and Health Excellence (NICE). In the first, SSRU is a partner in the creation of the new NICE National Collaborating Centre in Social Care. In the second, SSRU will lead the Research Support Unit, providing methods advice to NICE. One of the biggest changes over the last year has been the further development of our close working collaboration with the Thomas Coram Research Unit (TCRU), which with SSRU forms the Department for Childhood, Families and Health. The units maintain their separate identities and specialist skills and include a total of over 60 staff. Over the last year we have been learning to combine our talents and provide mutual support in our work. As a department we are becoming more aware of our potential for teaching as well as research. SSRU already has an MSc in Research for Public Policy and Practice; an MA in Sociology of Childhood and Children’s Rights; and a large programme of short courses. We are exploring how our teaching can be better linked with the courses provided by TCRU and are exploring new developments in teaching in social policy and evaluation. SSRU has surprisingly low turnover of staff. Over the year we have said goodbye only to Sonja Weirauch, to whom we are extremely grateful for her really excellent research and consultancy and finance support. In her place we have been very pleased to welcome Stuart Duncan into the same role. We have also said goodbye to, but keep in good contact with, Visiting Fellow Elisabeth Buk-Berge from the Norwegian Ministry of Education. We have been pleased to welcome new Visiting Fellow Esther Coren from Canterbury Christ Church University. Despite the low staff turnover, we have lost over the last few years a significant amount of the work time of senior staff as they fully or partially retire or seek new careers. We are pleased to announce that we are in progress of recruiting three new posts in the areas of evaluation, childhood and social policy. These new posts will add to our current expertise and further develop our research and teaching work in 2013. 3 3
