1. Manufacturing date and expiry date:<br />

Not only the expired drug is less<br />

effective but can also be Toxic<br />

Some medicaments contain only mfg.<br />

SHELF LIFE/ EXPIRY<br />

Expiry date of Cosmetics is written<br />

as “ Best within 24 months from date<br />

of mfg...”<br />

Verify from the pharmacist – Expiry<br />

date of medical devices also !<br />

Nutraceuticals also have SHELF life –<br />

Ensure from your pharmacist


2. Storage of medicines<br />

• Some drugs are temperature sensitive<br />

• Exposure to day light may degrade it<br />

Hence, ask your pharmacist:<br />

Where to store it . . . . In cool place<br />

. . . . In dark place


3. Dose<br />

As per prescription . . .<br />

• What is the dose? : Refer to Dr.<br />

prescription<br />

• b. i. d. ? 1----1? : both/ two times a day<br />

• If it is missed, then: DONOT take 2 doses<br />

at one time only


4. OTC drugs<br />

• Take appropriate suggestions from the<br />

pharmacist before taking OTC drugs<br />

• Ascertain whether the product contain<br />

appropriate ingredients to avoid side<br />

effects<br />

• Avoid Self Medication<br />

• Prevent OTC Drug Abuse


5. In Pregnancy<br />

• Ensure that the medicinal<br />

product that is SAFE for the<br />

mother and her foetus<br />

• Inform the pharmacist and<br />

• Inform the pharmacist and<br />

physician about your pregnancy<br />

status (First 8 weeks, etc.)<br />

• Ask the chemist about the safety status<br />

(non-teratogenic) of the prescribed drug


6. Pediatrics medication<br />

• Ensure the dose to be given to the<br />

infants as per their age<br />

• If not, ask the pharmacist to calculate<br />

the dose and then dispense the<br />

medication<br />

• Demand for special devices like<br />

droppers for comfortable administration<br />

of medicament to the infants<br />

• Verify the vaccination schedule


7. Geriatrics<br />

• Dose adjustment as per their age and other<br />

complications with advise of a pharmacist<br />

• Ageing factor is considered by pharmacist<br />

• Frequently, the senior citizens forget their<br />

schedule; either miss a dose / take double<br />

dose<br />

• A pharmacist can help by training them to<br />

use calendars<br />

• Can consult pharmacist regarding dietary<br />

modifications, exercise regimes<br />

• A chemist can provide home delivery of<br />

medicine in chronic cases, if requested.


8. Parenterals<br />

As these come directly in contact of blood,<br />

pharmacist consultation in following regards can be helpful:<br />

• Needle, syringe and vials/ampoules containing drug<br />

should be sterile<br />

• Disposable Syringes and needles must be used<br />

single time and thrown.<br />

DO NOT RE-USE IT!<br />

• Eye drops must also be STERILE<br />

• While taking parenterals, they should be taken under<br />

medical supervision, by physician or nurse or clinical<br />

pharmacist<br />

• Check out the vials and syringes for leakage,<br />

microbial growth and expiry dating<br />

• Open it just before administration


9. Vaccines<br />

• Vaccines are non-pathogenic viruses/<br />

micro-organism/ their toxic products<br />

• Help to build immunity: PREVENTION<br />

• But the killed microbes may get activated and become<br />

PATHOGENIC<br />

• So, consult the pharmacist for care to be taken with<br />

respect to any vaccine<br />

• Also ask the chemist for detailed information and<br />

leaflet<br />

• Take Receipt from both physician and pharmacist as a<br />

proof that you have been vaccinated<br />

• Report the chemists of any history of allergies


10. Obese or weak people<br />

• Dose is prescribed for an<br />

average 60- 65 kg weight human<br />

being<br />

• In obese people: dose need to<br />

be increased to improve the<br />

efficacy<br />

• In under weight patients: dose<br />

need to be reduced to avoid over<br />

dose reactions<br />

11. Contraceptives<br />

• Don’t feel SHY. Feel free to ask any queries to<br />

your own pharmacist<br />

• Both ladies and gents should take advice from<br />

1. Domestic use of Medical devices like saline<br />

solutions, ORS, glucometer, thermometer: HOW<br />

TO USE?<br />

2. Precautions to be taken by Asthmatics,<br />

Diabetics, Hypertensive, HIV +ve like patients<br />

with respect to other type of medicines<br />

3. Regarding type of dosage form:<br />

e.g. Enteric coated tablets should not be<br />

consume by breaking into half (CROCIN<br />

FAST RELIEF)

4. Proper guidance & training for selfmedication<br />

e.g. Use of insulin injectables, inhalers<br />

5. Take suggestions from pharmacist on<br />

cross use of allopathic & homeopathic/<br />

unani/ ayurvedic medicines<br />

6. Food-drug interactions are common. Take<br />

guidance from pharmacist<br />

e.g. medicine taken with egg/ milk forms a<br />

complex, thereby reducing its absorption<br />

and efficacy


7. Knowledge of dosing time<br />

e.g. Aspirin should be taken after food to avoid<br />

stomach irritation (FED CONDITION)<br />

Amoxicillin should be taken before food to improve its<br />

absorption from small intestine (FASTED STATE)<br />

8. Some medicines are to be taken in day time. WHY?<br />

. . . . Because body is more active during day<br />

9. Consumption of heavy food will delay the effect of<br />

medicines. WHY?<br />

. . . . Slower digestion of heavy foodstuffs like fish,<br />

meat, etc.<br />

10. After consumption, certain precautions are to be<br />

taken<br />

. . . . .Do not drive if you have consumed Cough<br />

Syrup
