ABOUT THE COLLEGE

Sahyadri Arts and Commerce College is

prominent college of Malnad Region. It is

situated on the bank of river Tunga in

Shimoga city which is the gateway of

Malnad. The erstwhile Sahyadri College

was established in 1940 with 105 students

and nine faculty members as an

intermediate college. In 1956-57 the

college was upgraded into First Grade

College with the introduction of B.A. and

B.Sc. programmes. The strength of the

college increased by leaps and bounds at

regular intervals. Therefore, it became

necessary to bifurcate the erstwhile

Sahyadri College into Sahyadri Arts

College and Sahyadri Science College in

December 1984. These two colleges

became constituent colleges of Kuvempu

University in 1991. At present, Sahyadri

Arts and Commerce College has more than

3500 students and nearly 150 teaching

faculty.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The Department of Sociology was started

from the inception of this college. Many

numbers of teachers have been taught in

this department and produced excellent

students who became meritorious

personalities in their life. The department

offers sociology as a core subject at B.A.,

level. M. Phil. and Ph.D. programs offered

since 2006. The department is known for

the distinctive approach to the study of

sociology. The department has three

doctorate holders and rest of the three

faculty members are M. Phil. Degree

holders and passed SLET.

ABOUT THE SEMINAR

Indian society is characterized by a high

degree of stratification based on caste,

creed, color, region and social origin. Caste

is a unique system of stratification found in

India. It is intimately related to social,

economic and religious systems, and in

recent times, to political system as well. It

is due to the prevalence of the caste system

that social justice was denied to a

substantial number of its population,

including backward classes. The term

‘backward classes’ and ‘other backward

classes’ have not been defined in the

Constitution of India, as a result it has

become increasingly difficult to work out a

uniform criteria to measure their

backwardness. However, an attempt on the

part of Indian government to bring about

social justice to the backward classes has

resulted in the reservation policy.

But the reservation policy is only

restricted to get the education and job

facilities. Though backward class people

succeeded to get political reservation, they

are unable to enjoy their rights properly.

On the other hand O.B.C people cannot

even dream the political reservation and

get a chance of political or economic

opportunity except panchayat level. In this

context, social justice is the need of the

hour and empowerment of the backward

classes, other backward classes, minorities

and women is a must. Different backward

social sections of the society can be

uplifted only by the support of the

government, forwarded social groups and

NGOs.
