CATHETERS, Urethral, Urinary 

1. Catheter sizes are designated by the Charriere (ch) gauge system –even 

numbers only. (The equivalent metric sizes for Charriere gauges 6-30 are 

2.0mm – 10mm, rising in 0.66mm). Where the prescriber does not state size, 

size 14 or 16 should be supplied. 

2. If the prescriber when ordering a Foley Catheter does not state a balloon size, 

a 10ml balloon catheter should be supplied or a 5ml balloon in the case of a 

paediatric catheter. 

NB BS1695: 1990 defines the balloon size as that amount of fluid required to 

inflate fully the balloon, including the volume of the lumen. Care should be taken 

to distinguish between an adult catheter formerly labelled as “5ml” but requiring 

10ml for full inflation and a paediatric catheter labelled “5ml” in accordance with 

the BS. 

3. Each sealed unit pack (i.e. one, five, six, ten or twenty-five for Nelaton pack 

as appropriate, five units only for Scott, one unit only for Foley packs) to be 

supplied in an outer protective pack as received from the wholesaler or 

manufacturer. 

4. The average period that a Foley catheter is kept in place is given as a guide 

and may vary considerably with individual patients. All patients should be 

assessed on an individual basis and their optimum time for catheter change 

established.

ADDITIONAL NOTES ON PEAK FLOW METERS 

1 Peak Flow Meters (PFMs), for patients with reversible obstructive airway disease, enable 

regular home monitoring of peak expiratory flow rate (PFR). They are primarily intended to 

assist in the management of asthma through regular objective measurement of peak flow 

rate. Such measurements are of value in the long term monitoring of treatment and 

compliance, and provide warning of a deteriorating function and the onset of an acute attack. 

Meters for short-term purposes should normally be provided on loan through the hospital 

clinic or GP’s surgery. 

2 The prescribable equipment consists of non-powered, hand-held meters for patient use. 

There are two ranges: standard range for adult and child use; low range for adults and 

children with severely restricted peak flow. The meters are provided with detachable 

mouthpiece (s) of durable plastic suitable for both sizes. Replacement mouthpieces are 

separately prescribable. Detailed user instructions and a purpose-designed record chart are 

provided with each meter. Replacement charts (FP1010) are available to patients from GP’s, 

also pharmacists, via PCTS. 

3 Prescribers should ensure that patients have received adequate training when a meter is 

supplied. This should include advice on recording and interpretation of results, adjustment of 

personally administered medication and when to seek urgent medical advice in the event of 

abnormal readings. Instructions in the use of peak flow meters may be given by GP’s or other 

healthcare professionals trained in PEFR monitoring techniques. 

4 With careful use, the prescribable meters are expected to last about three years. Patients 

should be advised to pay due regard to the manufacturer’s use instructions (Including 

maintenance and cleaning of the meter and the plastic mouthpiece), and to seek professional 

advice on the need to replace the meters over three years old and where damage is 

suspected. 

5 The prescribable meters are designed to provide for PEFR measurement with in the following 

ranges:

Jet nebulisers are utilised in the delivery of aerosol medication to the 

tracheobronchial tract 

A jet nebuliser is an aerosol chamber that consists of a Venturi jet and a reservoir. An aerosol 

of aqueous medication is produced when a stream of gas under pressure passes through the 

jet. To provide an optimum aerosol for most nebulisers, a minimum airflow rate of 6 to 8 L/min
