ENERGY SAVING LIGHTING SOLUTIONS

Sarlam has been working towards this goal for many years now, notably

by including all technologies that help to reduce energy consumption in our

lighting. At Sarlam we are proud that we have shown the path for others to

follow by recommending the use of electronic ballast fluorescent lamps, by

featuring motion sensor detectors into our lighting and in developing specific

applications such as dual power sources.

Thanks to our know-how and our status as the leader in our field, Sarlam

provides information to everyone involved in the lighting sector through specialist

documents such as the Lighting and Sustainable Development Guide.

OPTIMISING LIGHTING SOLUTIONS

Sarlam has developed a lighting calculation software package to help design

offices, architects and consultants to define structure and optimise their indoor

and outdoor lighting installations.

This specific tool enables all the calculations necessary in drafting a project

to be carried out quickly. It contains regularly updated databases of all Sarlam

references, along with their photometric curves and takes account of the lighting

levels recommended by European indoor lighting standard EN 12 464.

This software application, which we have called Sarlux, is an effective aid to

optimising lighting and in saving energy.

CERTIFIED QUALITY!

Our know-how, professionalism and quality are assets that enable us

to design safe, robust and reliable products, that scrupulously respect

customer requirements. The NF or ENEC label awarded by independent

laboratories placed on our products is a proof of this conformity.

CE MARKING: COMPULSORY

European Community Directives demand CE marking on all products. This

marking relates to safety for people and electro-magnetic compatibility.

Product standard EN 60 598 relates to safety for people. This series of texts

applies to luminaires whose light source is lower than 1 000 Volts. They

define the requirements that these luminaires must satisfy and describe the

corresponding verification tests. The standard itself refers to other standards,

notably those relating to resistance to impact (IK index) and protection (IP

index).

Electro-Magnetic Compatibility is defined as the ability of a luminaire to work

satisfactorily within its electromagnetic environment. It must not produce any

electromagnetic interference itself likely to create operating problems for an

electric or electronic system.

Electromagnetic compatibility is measured by standardised tests after which

an Electro-Magnetic Compatiblity Certificate is awarded.

All Sarlam luminaires comply with these standards and are tested by external

accredited laboratories, both in terms of respect for standard EN 60 598 and

for the measurement of their Electro-Magnetic Compatibility.

VOLUNTARY NF AND ENEC MARKING

The NF Luminaires label placed on an appliance is a sign of conformity.

It is awarded at the conclusion of a voluntary approach by the manufacture,

which involves submitting their product to the highest level of requirements

that apply to luminaires and accepting that checks will be carried out in their

workshops and depots by an independent external laboratory. It is a higher

level of requirement than CE marking as it includes a quality inspection of

the luminaire production lines (by sampling over the year).

This is also true of the ENEC label (European conformity mark). ENEC stamped

products must be manufactured in a factory that has a Quality Assurance

system. To this end, Sarlam is certified ISO 9000 version 2000.

HIGH TECHNICAL COMPLEXITY

A Sarlam light is the end product of a long and delicate technical development process:

designing and producing lights must take some serious constraints into account.

For example, all the vital parts of a bulkhead light are designed to withstand

all weather conditions and are contained inside a highly protected “casing”

through which no foreign body can pass: no water or dust can get in.

These requirements mean that we must meet another technical

challenge: keeping the heat produced at a tolerable and standardised

level. The main technical difficulty to be resolved is how to

evacuate the heat generated mainly by the lamp and the ballast.

When we produce our bulkhead luminaires, Sarlam tests and uses manufacturing

materials whose characteristics meet the most rigorous performance

demands. These products are also characterised by optimum component

involvement, know-how which is the product of over 60 years’ experience.

EVEN MORE FEATURES

Complexity increases with the integration of new components or features. Standard

use of fluorescent sources and electronic ballast and the arrival of built-in detection

and dual power sources bring with them a wide range of constraints that need

to be dealt with. To meet these constraints, Sarlam has joined forces with major

light source and electronic component manufacturers to design, test and release

innovative and reliable solutions that meet every current standard to the letter.

QUICK AND EFFECTIVE INSTALLATION

Sarlam products are designed to be easy to install and are built to last. They

feature numerous handy features, the result of tests carried out under real life

conditions with our partner installers.

Among a few we could mention:

The pre-cabled technical base: only the network connection is required – all

components and functions are already powered,

The cable space on all our products: this provides installers with greater

comfort while working,

Level and flush settings: these allow installers to easily smooth over any

imperfections on areas where the products are to be installed, and even correct

any drilling problems.

Captive screws: installers can handle luminaire components without worrying

about leaving any screws behind,

Pre-positioning elements: these enable a luminaire front or skirt to be installed

without needing to touch it,

Diffuser self-attachment: these allow installers to keep their hands free to

install the luminaire skirt or front.

GUARANTEEING REDUCED AND PRACTICAL MAINTENANCE

As for mechanical elements, the design quality and the materials we use

guarantee that products will last. Vandal proof versions enable increased

resistance to external attacks and require fewer interventions by maintenance

services.

For light sources, Sarlam recommends using fluorescent lamps at all times.

These have a lifetime of 10 000 hours, which is ten times more than incandescent

lamps: this divides relamping frequency by a factor of 10.

When maintenance interventions are required, these can be carried out with

the same ease as installation operations. The different handy features, such

as self-attachment for diffusers or captive screws make the job easier and

quicker. Brass inserts mean that screws can be tightened and loosened as

often as necessary without damaging the bodywork.

Finally, Sarlam has developed an « Operating guarantee » option which provides

a clear plus for maintenance. The luminaire has two independent ballast sources:

if one source fails, the other can keep up a minimum lighting level, meaning

that maintenance is less urgent.

We do recommend that both sources are changed at the same time.

Over and above its products, this commitment is highlighted by a real environmental

approach which is deployed around 4 axis:

Integration of environmental management into manufacturing sites,

Acknowledgement of the environment in product design (Eco-Design),

Development of innovative and energy saving lighting solutions,

Publication of precise information about products’ environmental impact.

SARLAM PROVIDES INFORMATION ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENTAL

IMPACT OF ITS PRODUCTS

Our customers can access Product Environmental Profiles (PEP): these profiles

contain data about the composition, consumption and end of life of the vast

majority of our products. PEPs are intended to control three major indicators

for their environmental impact: the exhaustion of natural resources (RMD),

total energy consumed (ED) and contribution to the Greenhouse effect (GW).

The values of these indicators are calculated using the EIME (Environmental

Information and Management Explorer) software application which models

the product design and measures its impact at each stage in its life cycle:

raw materials, manufacture, distribution, use, end of life.

THE SARLAM OFFER FAVOURS FLUORESCENT LAMPS

Fluorescent lamps represent over 70% of lighting applications in the tertiary

sector but only 50% of the energy consumed. Sarlam offers versions with

fluorescent sources in all its ranges.

At an equal luminous flux, a fluorescent lamp consumes up to 4 times less

energy and lasts up to 15 times longer than an incandescent lamp.

The T5 electronic ballast tubes (used in the Prelium Bandeau) provide excellent

luminous efficiency (over 100 Lumens per Watt) and have a lifetime of around

16 000 hours.

In their professional version, fluocompact lamps are characterised by high

power levels and lifetimes of up to 15 000 hours. Some hot cathode electronic

ballast versions can work with a dimmer.

DEVELOPING ELECTRONIC BALLAST SOLUTIONS

Sarlam uses electronic ballasts with its fluorescent sources each time technology

permits it.

A Lamp + Electronic ballast combination enables a 25% reduction in consumption

compared with a Lamp + Ferromagnetic ballast combination, for the same

luminous flux. An 18W fluorescent tube consumes 29.5W with ferromagnetic

ballast, compared with just 19 W with electronic ballast.

Electronic ballast provides many advantages over and above the energy

aspects: lights that come on almost instantly, electrode protection by a hot

cathode system that enables operation with a timer or dimmer and lights that

switch off automatically when they reach the end of their lifetime (instead of

flickering).

TO SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

THE DETECTION SOLUTION

As a specialist in indoor and outdoor pathway lighting, Sarlam has a

duty to provide ever-more advanced responses to current environmental

issues. Today, we are proud to do this with Presence Detection and

Movement Detection triggered lighting management.

PRESENCE DETECTION OR MOVEMENT DETECTION?

Whichever technology is chosen, these systems enable lighting to be switched

on and off either by detecting a human presence or by sensing movement.

This is an efficient way to ensure that lights are switched off in premises at

night and to manage comings and goings during the day.

The Infrared detector reacts to the heat given off by individuals and so detects

when someone is present in the room. The Hyper Frequency detector itself

reacts to changes sent back from the wave it emits if there is any movement

within its coverage range.

In both cases, the signal is sent to the luminaires which switch on straight

away. The lights are switched off automatically in the premises as soon as

they are empty, after a programmable timer.

When used with fluorescent sources, «hot start» or «hot cathode» type electronic

ballasts are required to protect the electrodes from the source.

AN AMAZING RADAR

YOU’LL BE SURPRISED

SPECIFIC ADVANTAGES OF BUILT-IN MOTION SENSORS

Sarlam offers a movement detection system produced by integrating a fully

hidden module: the sensor is installed inside the bulkhead light and so is

completely out of site once the light is installed.

The mechanical (IK 4 to 10 depending on the ranges) and waterproofing

properties are maintained.

Sarlam has developed a miniature detection module that operates with high

frequency (5.8 GHz) electromagnetic waves. Including this sensor in the

bulkhead light reduces installation time, lowers energy consumption and

reduces maintenance operations still further.

THE DUAL POWER SUPPLY SOLUTION

When it comes to managing lighting as part of a sustainable development

approach, a dual power supply is one promising innovation which

combines safety, savings and energy management for communal and

outdoor areas.

THE DUAL POWER SUPPLY CONCEPT

A recent Sarlam research development, the dual power supply enables two

light sources to be managed independently of each other. It also enables

lighting levels to vary to suit the circumstances. It is now possible to have

low standby lighting to guarantee safety within premises and also provide

more powerful general lighting only when necessary. To optimise lighting

still further, a dual power supply system can be combined with a movement

detection system.

The advantage here is that energy consumption can be adapted to suit the

way each building is used.

HOW THE DUAL POWER SUPPLY WORKS

Standby and safety lighting is provided by the less powerful source (including

a LED) and general lighting is provided by the more powerful source, or

even both sources at the same time.

The light contains both sources which are controlled by two different

systems:

A clock or night detection switch for standby lighting (permanent),

A switch or movement detector for general lighting (intermittent).

POSSIBLE APPLICATIONS

The dual power supply can be used to guarantee safety in dark corridors by

providing constant power to a LED which is lit constantly (low consumption,

long lifetime) and more powerful lighting when the corridor is used thanks to

a fluorescent source connected to a motion sensor.

Outdoors, such as in car parks, safety lighting can be provided by a fluorescent

source controlled by a night time detector. A second fluorescent source,

piloted by a time switch or a motion sensor, doubles lighting power during

busy periods.

TO SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

LIGHT SOURCES

If you want to save energy, it is vital to choose the right light source.

This choice must take several factors into account: the level of lighting

required, the quality of lighting desires, the conditions under which

the light will be used and, of course, the source’s energy efficiency.

INCREASED POPULARITY FOR SUBSTITUTION LAMPS

Fluocompact lamps with a built-in power supply generally have an E27 base

which enables them to be installed instead of incandescent lamps. This is why

they are called substitution lamps. Note that they have a small electronic ballast

integrated into their base. This means that they are subject to electromagnetic

compatibility problems (interaction possible with a High Frequency motion

sensor, for example).

Sarlam recommends that you take care when using substitution lamps in

lights for reasons of current non-qualification of sources, the interchangeability

of substitution lamps (all power levels possible for the same E27 base) and

differences in quality levels between the products present on the market.

DEDICATED LIGHT SOURCES FOR LUMINAIRES: A NECESSITY

Sarlam recommends the use of fluorescent sources with separate ballast for

professional applications: these are sources that are dedicated to specific

base, which are qualified by Sarlam, which anticipate and guarantee their

proper operation when used intensively, notably when it comes to heating

(something which is very important in bulkhead lights) and electromagnetic

compatibility.

FLUORESCENCE FOR GREATER ENERGY EFFICIENCY

Fluorescent lights provide 4 to 5 times more light than incandescent lamps. In

other words, the luminous flux from a 100 W incandescent lamp can be achieved

with a 20 W fluorescent source, which means that 5 times the energy can be

saved with fluorescence to achieve the same luminous flux. Fluorescent lamps

are more costly than incandescent lamps. However, they are more profitable

in terms of overall cost over several years.

In the housing sector lights are frequently damaged (both intentionally and

accidentally). This causes a problem which is not always easy to solve...

Entrance halls, car parks and cellars are just three of the areas where the

maximum level of protection must be guaranteed for these products. Sarlam

has taken this into account and has developed a tailor-made solution.

Sarlam’s vandal proof products are both attractive and hard-wearing. Their

ability to stand up to impact and bad weather alike mean that they can be

installed both indoors and outdoors. Conscious of the need to keep the aesthetic

qualities of our products, we have taken care to maintain the same design for

our vandal proof products as for their standard versions.

Available throughout almost the entire range (Chartres, Kalank, Prelium, H.P. to

name but a few), Sarlam’s vandal proof functions meet the safety and solidity

requirements dictated by the environment in which they are installed, with

high degrees of protection (IP from 7 to 10 and IK from 43 to 65 depending

on the models).

A vandal proof bollard with an innovative design which enhances the outside

of modern tertiary buildings.

It is made up of a belted steel tube structure which contains a round light

from the Kalank recessed range.

Applications

The Kalank bollard is well-adapted between urban furniture and lighting and so is

Kalankosol takes care of its appearance: ground or semi-ground diffusers,

stainless steel trim and functional: special care and attention has been taken

with the seals around the diffuser and cable glands in particular.

The 4 diameters are available in a wide range of sources, including LEDs and

power levels, making them vital elements for lighting up pedestrian areas

A recessed decorative LED luminaire for walls and ceilings. It can be installed

as easily as a switch and cables directly to the 230 V source.

Kalank DP (Dry Partition) has been specially designed to be recessed in dry

partitions thanks to its small size: it can fit into a 28 mm housing behind

the partition.

It is ideally suited to standby lighting in rooms in hospitals, retirement homes

The shape and material of the white or black clippable polycarbonate front

provide a modern touch. The cast aluminium front to be screwed in combines

the performance of metal with a modern design.

A top of the range architectural bulkhead light. It is both

highly attractive and extremely resistant to vandalism.

It maintains its own particular curves while being fitted

with an anti-pull skirt which prevents anything being

levered between the wall and the light. It can only be

removed with the Sarlam tool (unique oval recess). Its

diffuser benefits from the increased resistance provided

by polycarbonate.
