Following their ‘yes’ to <strong>Islington</strong>’s<br />
housing service becoming an Arms<br />
Length Management Organisation<br />
(ALMO) tenants are looking <strong>for</strong>ward to<br />
£156 million to improve their homes<br />
and estates.<br />
William McGarvie, ALMO shadow board<br />
director said: "This is great news <strong>for</strong><br />
everyone. I'm delighted that everyone has<br />
had the opportunity to have their say and<br />
that tenants have voted <strong>for</strong> what is the best<br />
option on offer to us. We can now work<br />
towards delivering the improvements to<br />
everyone's homes and making a real<br />
difference."<br />
Ann Lucas has now been appointed chair<br />
and Jessie White vice-chair of the ALMO<br />
shadow board.<br />

Tenants evicted<br />
The Carter family have lost their<br />
Highbury home because of their<br />
persistent anti-social behaviour.<br />
Complaints against the family of six<br />
included assault, threats of violence,<br />
criminal damage and racial harassment.<br />
The success of the legal action taken by<br />
<strong>Islington</strong> <strong>Council</strong> was secured because<br />
of the cooperation of local residents.<br />
ALMO facts<br />

the combined knowledge, skills, experience<br />
and dedication of the shadow board<br />

homes and have a much more direct say in<br />

The turnout was 24.17%<br />
the running of their homes. The ALMO will<br />
be a truly local organisation committed to<br />
providing the best possible service to<br />
tenants and leaseholders in <strong>Islington</strong>.<br />
The ALMO will receive £24.9m to spend on<br />
improving council homes in <strong>Islington</strong> <strong>for</strong> the<br />
years 2004-06. In the years 2006-08 tenants<br />
will benefit from around £56 million.<br />
The ALMO must get a two star rating to<br />
receive the cash.<br />

which 80% of tenants said ‘yes’,<br />
Six Acres and Andover Estate<br />
plus Haden and Clifton Courts will<br />
now be included in the ALMO.<br />
