Bartenders bash wrap up
By robert Cvetkovski
contributing writer
Last month I had the pleasure of attending the infamous
“BARTENDERS BASH” now called Hospitality Expo, at the
Holiday Isles Resort and Marina in ISLAMARODA FL.
I drove down with my local celeb
bartender Mike, from my beach bar,
Shaka Jons. Mike and I enjoyed the 2
hour ride down from Ft Lauderdale.
On the way there we stopped off
and picked up some much needed
supplies. Mike invested in a $100
bottle of Grand Marnier and a bottle
of Vodka for me. We were now
ready for our 3 days of fun.
We arrived late Sunday afternoon,
a day before the event started
which allowed us to settle in and
look around the beautiful property.
We checked into our room, which
was a standard typical room for the
area, and immediately went to the
Wreck Bar for some of their famous
island flair, we enjoyed the fresh
conch fritters, which were hand battered
and rolled of course, with an
array of fresh fish. After dinner we
headed to the RUM TIKI BAR located
directly on the resort property. We
heard great local performances and
networked with ITB people from as
far as TAMPA and ORLANDO.
Day two was a great experience
as from 11am to 1pm there was
an array free liquor samples from
a variety of vendors. We tasted an
abundance of flavored vodkas, as
well as tequila, prepackaged shots
and beer. We spent the great part
of the afternoon at the In The Biz
Magazine booth, handing out magazines,
bar towels and networking
with hospitality people.
I noticed the great response
ITB got from people coming to our
booth. There were several thousand
people there by noon on Monday
enjoying the FREE samples of liquor
and beer brought in by the liquor
companies. After the hospitality
tents closed the party moved to
the stage where there were various
events from hot body contests to
flair bartender contests. This is a
must see and do event if you are IN
THE BIZ and I highly recommend it.
I enjoyed it, however, I have lots of
ideas for next year.
I would like see more live performances
from locally grown talent,
after all, we are the home of FLO
RIDA, Casley and many talented musicians
and entertainers. I think we
can better organize this event to be
an exclusive to ITB and their guests,
it should not be an open event for
the average Joe, as this event was
and should be a celebration of our
talented hospitality professionals.
I would like to see some of the
larger companies start a scholarship
fund so that any of the people
attending who are looking to better
their career, can do so.
Basically, what I am saying is,
Hospitality Expo should be 3 days
designated, geared and engineered
to help our hospitality people relax,
have fun and wind down from the
previous season. The event should
also go back to being a way for the
Bar owners/managers to taste the
new products being offered so that
they can promote them to their
clientele.
I enjoyed this event and hats
off to Holiday Isles Resort for hosting
this year’s event again. I look
forward to next year and hope that
we can make some changes to bring
it back to where it was several years
ago.
Summer usually equates with
blockbuster, but June doesn’t quite
fit the bill. While there may not be
a plethora of intelligent cinematic
fare to feast upon, there are a few gems in
the mix from “Super 8’s” mystery and character-driven
storyline to “Bad Teacher’s” irreverent
humor. For action and comic book
antics, see “Green Lantern” and the newest
“X-Men.” For a more heartfelt cultural experience,
choose “Just Like Us” or “A Better
Life.” There are other films out there this
month, but this gives a good range for an
entertaining time at the movies.
June 3
Even mutants need to start somewhere
and “X-Men: First Class” is about just that.
This popular film series goes back in time
to show how some of our favorite mutants,
like Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence), got
their start. Professor Charles Xavier began
a school called Xavier’s School for Gifted
Youngsters to help train those who had
mutant superpowers how to hone and
focus their skills. Ironically, he teamed up
with Erik, who would later become his
arch-enemy Magneto. The backdrop is 1963
(when X-Men was first released as a comic
book) and the Cuban Missile Crisis, adding
an intriguing twist.
June 10
After touring the film festival circuit, the
cultural gem “Just Like Us” is hitting the big
screen. Showcasing some newer freedoms
in the Arab world, focusing on Dubai,
Lebanon, Saudi Arabia and Egypt, this documentary,
directed by Ahmed Ahmed, talks
about how comedy connects us all. Many of
these regions have not been able to enjoy
comedians the way we do here in America,
but new freedom also has led to new forms
of expression. This film opens in NY and LA
June 10 and expands June 17.
Steven Spielberg (as producer) teams
up with J.J. Abrams (as director) for “Super
8,” one of the most-anticipated films of
the summer. By using minimalistic teasers
that leave plenty of questions as to the
content, this team has built up quite an
audience, curious simply to see what the
film is about. It takes place in the summer
of 1979 when a group of young friends set
out to make a super-8 movie and unexpectedly
witness one colossal train wreck. (This
is all built around the fact that something
has been moved from Area 51, supposedly
by train). But what comes next is more
shocking – as people start to disappear and
strange events happen and the local deputy
tries to find out why. Unlike the hurried
pace of most summer action films, this
suspenseful piece seems more characterdriven,
a throwback to films like “E.T” and
“Stand By Me,” rather than a “Transformers.”
June 17
D.C. Comics “Green Lantern” is finally
coming to theaters with Ryan Reynolds
in the helm. His character, Hal Jordan,
reluctantly accepts the green glowing ring
and the power that comes with it
when the purple alien tracks him
down and bestows it upon him.
Little does he know the notso-joyful
ride he is about to
take to the outer limits and
back and the enemies he
will face in an effort to save
his own planet from total
annihilation. Blake Lively
also stars as his girlfriend.
June 24
“A Better Life”
is a poignant
drama about a
father and son
that some
have called
Oscar-worthy.
Produced,
in part, by
Jami Gertz,
best known
for her acting,
this film follows
a father who tries
to give his son a better
life than he has had.
He works to keep his
teenage boy away
from both gangs and
immigration agents
while struggling to
keep himself afloat
by doing gardening
work.
For those who love
sarcasm irreverence and
comedy, “Bad Teacher”
seems to have all the right
moves. The trailer has a
notorious “red band,” meaning
it has inappropriate written all over it,
which means it is oh-so-right for a certain
audience, not so good for kiddies. Cameron
Diaz stars as a teacher who hates her
job and would rather score with the new
substitute, played by Justin Timberlake, not
just for love, but for the money. But she
finds herself competing with a fellow teacher
while dealing with the day-in-day out
struggles of her life by getting high, drinking
and swearing like a sailor. Jason Segal (best
known for “How I Met Your Mother”) also
stars as the gym teacher who tries to win
her over. Phyllis Smith (from “The Office”)
plays off Diaz, with deadpan
humor throughout.
InTheBiz Karaoke
TM Singers & KJs
Happy Spring everyone!
School’s out so you can take
the kiddies to karaoke with
you. Make sure you talk to your
local KJ to find out if a show is family
friendly. Even if it is in a restaurant,
it doesn’t mean that it is a PG
show. I try very hard to make sure
people don’t swear on my mic or sing
questionable songs while there are
families around, but it happens. As
KJs, we try to know the content of
songs, but we can’t know every song.
Unfortunately we don’t have a delay
feature although there are times I
wish I had one....
Liz Bennett is at East Side Pub in
Fort Lauderdale on Wednesday nights
and Lou Laino is there on Saturday
nights. Stop by to see them. You can
also catch Lou at his family friendly
show on Sunday nights from 6-9 at
Perfect Game in Coral Springs.
If you are looking for karaoke
tracks, look no further than Sing a
Song in Hollywood. They will get you
anything you need. 954-927-2880
So, I am getting a lot of feedback
from singers for our “Karaoke Advice”
section, but not a lot from KJs. Let me
hear from you KJs out there!
KJs-Dead air is what I am hearing
bothers singers. Play music or make
sure the next singer knows they are
next.
Singers-If it’s not “the version you
usually sing” and it doesn’t come out
as well as you’d hoped, don’t look at
the KJ like we wronged you. If you are
a regular singer at a show, the KJ will
more than likely get the version you
like OR you can go to Sing a Song (see
above) and buy your favorite version
from them.
Keep the feedback coming.
Keep smiling and keep singing!
Strangest pickup line? Did you grow up on
What’s your favorite part of the service industry?
I love meeting new people and interacting
with them.
What do you look for in a guy? Light eyes,
amazing personality, educated, someone who
supports everything that I do.. Oh wait, I’m describing
my boyfriend.
What’s your craziest work-related story?
One time I was walking around carrying shots
the dance floor. No one noticed and the guy continued
to pee.
Strangest pickup line? I don’t know about
strangest, but the worst is when tons of people
are watching you model and some guy is like oh
hey, so do you model? LOL
What’s your favorite part of the service industry?
EVERYTHING! It’s such a blessing to be
in this industry. From having team dress you
from head to toe and looking beautiful, to the
VIP treatment you receive while working events.
What do you look for in a guy? For me a guy
needs to set himself apart from the rest. There
are tons of handsome men here so for a guy to
attract me his personality must be vibrant, seductive,
and witty.
What’s your craziest work-related story?
Luckily most of my shoots go very smooth and
are carefully planned out. But for some reason
my wardrobe changes always bring surprises,
there’s just never anywhere to change in private
LOL
What is something we would be surprised
to know about you? I am a very deep thinker. I
like to study quantum physics, ancient history,
philosophy, and psychology. That sort of stuff!
My friends always laugh at my random knowledge
of things. BIG THANKS TO ITB :)
Strangest pickup line? While I worked at the
Seminole Casino a man approached me with “If
beauty was a minute, what would you be, an
hour!”
What’s your favorite part of the service industry?
I really enjoy meeting goal oriented
people who are able to also help me achieve my
goals.
What do you look for in a guy? There is nothing
sexier than confidence! I love a bad boy with
a sweet side.
What’s your craziest wok-related story? Several
years ago, I promoted a new swimsuit company
with a real 8 foot long boa on my shoulders.
It was crazy knowing this animal could
really hurt me.
What is something we would be surprised to
know about you? I am a book rat. Reading is my
life. I RUIN myself collecting all sorts of books.
Thank you so much to InThebiz Magazine and
a great time.
What’s the strangest pick-up line you’ve heard while
working?
I really don’t have a chance to get to hear pick up lines, as I
have never felt threatened in anyway.
I would have to say MY JOB! I am a Dancer/Model/Entertainer
for Zhantra Entertainment. Zhantra is known nationally
and internationally for providing the ultimate in talent to venues
that range from corporate parties to the most prestigious
club venues, lounges, restaurants and hotels around the
world. From week to week I never know where I will be working,
I could be here in South Florida or jetting off to some far
off location, some of the places I have been are: Las Vegas,
Koh Samui - Thailand, Bahamas, Marbella (Spain), Cabo San
Luca - Mexico, Trinidad, Bolivia, Guadeloupe Islands, Honduras,
Chicago, and New york. I take great pride in working for
Zhantra because they have a fabulous staff comprised of only
the top individuals in their field. Each and every night I work
is a unique and different experience that leaves me excited to
perform again and again each and every week.
What do you look for in a guy?
Luckily I found him. My boyfriend is very supportive of my career
and a kind and loving man, and that is important to me.
What’s your craziest work-related story?
Wow! Every day I get to work is pretty crazy from the time I
open my costume bag to see what my designers and stylists
have created for me, anything from being body painted to a
light flashing bra and tutu to more refined corporate looks.
Everyday getting to work I feel like a little girl on Christmas
opening presents and it is so exciting watching myself transform
as I have my make up applied and put on my costume.
What do you like to do when you are not working?
When I am not working I enjoy relaxing at home with my
boyfriend Josh and my puppy Kaya.
What is something we would be surprised to know
about you?
There are not many surprises with me, I believe Marilyn
RedCap is Everyone’s
Personal Driver
RedCap is the premier,
membership based, driving
service where members
are able to reserve a driver
to drive them in the member’s
own vehicle. This eliminates
the challenge of being with your
vehicle when you can’t, shouldn’t
or prefer not to drive. Never risk
a DUI, leave your car behind, ride
in a crummy taxi or overpay for
car service. It’s your car, their
driver, on-demand.
According to RedCap, it’s the
only membership that can make
you feel like a million bucks
without actually having to spend
a million bucks. No hoops or
impossible-to-meet terms simply
pay for what you use. And feel
awesome at no extra charge.
RedCap is starting to partner
with bars and restaurants all over
South Florida and currently has
partnerships with Quarterdeck,
Lauderdale Grille, Bonefish Mac’s,
Blue Moon Fish Co., Fort Lauderdale
Country Club and Signature
Grand. Guests of partner venues
are able to enjoy RedCap benefits
specifically from those locations.
RedCap also has a very unique
partnership with Las Olas hotspot
Yolo, O Lounge and Vibe. Guests
of the property will have access
to RedCap directly on-site. As
guests enter the valet area shared
by Yolo, O Lounge and Vibe, a
RedCap CarCierge and brand
ambassador will meet them and
can make reservations right on
the spot or from their table.
The benefit of this program
for Yolo guests is that they can
arrange for a driver at the beginning
of their evening, and do
not have to phone or text their
reservation, as RedCap representatives
are on stand-by. What
is the benefit for other venue
partners? Guests are able to
fully enjoy themselves and not
worry about getting themselves
or their car home safely. Bottom
line; guests stay longer and spend
more money.
RedCap has created a special
offer just for In the Biz - $6 per
month, or $50 for the entire year
(plus usage). This fee includes
access to VIP benefits such as
hourly drivers, as well as ondemand
one-way drivers. For the
best experience when joining,
call 866-937-4837 or visit www.
myredcap.com for more info.
Jon G.
Lucky’s Tavern
By Rachel Galvin
Editor
Jon G. feels lucky to work at
Lucky’s Tavern. Once home to
Coyote Ugly, this locale has been
revamped and now is home to
the 3 Legged Dog.
Jon had this to say about how to
make everyone happy at the bar:
“One of the things that I feel is most
important is making customers happy
by not making them wait for drinks.
After that I just treat people as a new
friend, like we are hanging out at the
bar together”.
There will always be difficult situations
that you have to deal with, Jon
says, “Rough nights with bad customers
comes with the job, the trick is not to
let people get to you. You can’t always
“kill-em with kindness.” unless you
work in the corporate world which we
don’t”.
For those just getting into “the biz”
he offers this advice: “Make the most
of it. Treat bartending as a profession
but don’t plan on doing it forever.
There is no retirement plan for a
bartender”
Sometimes, working with coworkers
can also have its drama. But
Jon knows how to deal with those
situations as well. “The way I deal
with co-workers is come to work to do
work and we’ll get along great. Don’t
let work affect outside friendships
because work is work and is separate
from your social life”.
He enjoys seeing customers coming
in for themed nights week after week
(like Monday – Free Buffet and Poker
Night, Tuesday – 1st Team All Bar Competition,
Wednesday – Ladies Night,
ladies drink free). Patrons also enjoy
the live music on the weekend and
the 35 percent off InTheBiz discount
every day.
Lucky’s Tavern is located at 214 SW
2nd (Himmarshee St.), Ft. Lauderdale,
FL 33301. 954-356-8140.
There will be a column every month in InTheBiz TM Magazine on tricks of the trade. The columns will be
written about those who work in the industry to inform fellow colleagues about the industry.
