A MESSAGE TO OUR
Community
Greetings Friends. Yes, it is all about change and Janus Developmental Services
has come a long way in delivering on our mission to provide individuals
with disabilities the opportunity to participate and contribute within the
community. I want to share with you a little about our history, our name and
share with you of our accomplishments over the past year.
Janus Developmental Services is the result of a 1950’s grassroots movement
of parents who decided to ignore the experts and not institutionalize their
children born with disabilities. These parents boldly asked their neighbors to
look with better eyes and we found that when we change the way we see,
the things we see change.
On April 4, 1979 the Hamilton County Association for Special Citizens and
the Tipton County Association for Retarded Citizens merged to form Janus
Developmental Services.
In 1993 Janus centralized operations on state route 32 in Noblesville and in
1994 two things happened that set us on our current course:
First, Janus secured its first three-year accreditation from the Commission on
Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilitates, known as CARF. CARF accreditation
serves as a standard of excellence and I am so pleased to share that our
accreditation has been renewed every three years since that time with excellent
reviews.
The second, Governor Bayh closed state institutions, and with these closings
came an influx of consumers seeking meaningful, productive services.
About our name, I am often asked what does Janus stand for. Well thank
goodness Janus is not another acronym; Janus is the Roman god of doorways,
gates and avenues; the keeper, if you will, of the past and future.
Depicted with two faces, one looking to the past, ever mindful of lessons
learned, the other looking forward to the future, controlling innovation and
progress. And somewhere in the middle lies the aggregate of all human
experiences and dreams.
Janus is one of the few agencies in the state of Indiana and the only facilitybased
agency in Hamilton County that offers a comprehensive menu of
services that reaches out to all those with disabilities regardless of age or
severity of the disability.
We have come a long way!
But we are not without challenge: with Medicaid Waiver programmatic
changes, funding cutbacks, unfunded mandates and increasing regulatory
oversight we are truly being pushed “to the max.”
A SAFE
Investment
LONGEVITY
We have been around for 30
years, and we are here to stay.
And while it is all about change, we never forget that this is not a dash, it
is a marathon and I am absolutely convinced that we have what it takes to
navigate through these difficult times. No doubt, though, the work ahead
requires equal parts of vision and audacity.
We have come a long way and we’ve learned that where there is no vision
people parish! But we have a long way to go. Janus has a vision that talks
about being a partner of choice, about consumer’s abilities, confidence and
choice. When considering vision we have a responsibility to act locally but
think globally. So for a moment I want to talk about a global vision with one
word: Janteloven: a Danish word emphasizing that no person is better than
another. When that philosophy is widely accepted, then we will truly have
cause to celebrate.
I have faith in our board, I have faith in our staff, I have faith in our principles,
practices and priorities and I have faith in you, our community. I do
believe that hope is the hybrid of desire and expectation. But perhaps more
now than ever, it is not a matter having hope, but a matter that we are the
hope.
Please join us for a free community luncheon every third Tuesday, see the
difference, experience the hope!
Kind Regards,
Connie Sanders
WHAT HAPPENED
During 2009?
Ask Event – Create, Connect and Commit!
On Friday, April 17, 2009, Janus had its first annual “Ask” breakfast. This
invite-only event took place at the Fountains in Carmel. The program consisted
of testimonials from consumers and parents of the consumers, a
special musical presentation from two consumers, and the “Janus story.”
Virginia Hall
Janus was recently the recipient of an $118,000 check; the check was a
donation from the late Mrs. Virgina Hall of Noblesville.
For years Mrs. Hall watched the Janus transportation vehicles transport her
disabled neighbor on a daily basis; she knew how much it meant to her
neighbor, and witnessed first hand the difference Janus made in the life of
her neighbor.
Client Appreciation Day!
An all day event that allows the consumers to kick back, relax, and have
some fun on a sunny, summer day.
We had a Hawaiian Lau theme with games and prizes, and a highly anticipated
dunk tank with lunch and karaoke to follow!
Shake Down the Stars!
Janus had its signature Fundraising Event, “Shake Down the Stars” on
Saturday, August 1, 2009 at the Fountains in Carmel. Cocktails and hors
d’oeuvres were served at 6pm with dinner to follow at 7pm.
The 40’s and 50’s swanky, nightclub atmosphere was re-enacted with entertainment
from the Starry Knights Band as well as Frank and Dean “Once
More.” The night was full of eating, dancing, and mingling along with a
silent and live auction.
PROGRAMS &
Services
Janus began in 1979 through a merger of the Hamilton
County Association of Special Citizens and the
Tipton County Association for Retarded Citizens. Parents
of children born with physical and developmental
disabilities came together to form an organization
that would create new opportunities, connect to the
community, and commit to providing a better quality
of life for individuals with disabilities. For nearly
30 years, Janus has been dedicated to making their
dreams become reality, providing essential services
like transportation, pre-vocational training, and community
employment. Join us in making a difference
in the lives of those individuals with disabilities in
Central Indiana!
INDIANA FIRST STEPS
Serving children from birth to 36 months of age and
directed by Joanne McDonough, a Registered Nurse
who has been with Janus for 20 years. Last fiscal
year we served 474 children.
PRE-VOCATIONAL
Providing a workforce to fulfill contracted manufacturing
services. What a partnership, we provide the
venue and a productive workforce of 72 individuals
and area businesses provide the materials and pay
our consumers for a good day’s work. This partnership
results in 25 area businesses being very competitive
and involved in their community, but what
it does for our consumers is immeasurable. This
partnership results in our consumers feeling an enormous
sense of achievement, experiencing a greater
quality of life and allows them to also experience the
joy of giving back to their community.
HABILITATION TRAINING
Focuses on building: daily independent living skills,
social skills academic skills.
COMMUNITY EMPLOYMENT
Directed by Kathie Bowman who has been with
the agency for 28 years and has been instrumental
in expanding this program into a six-county-wide
program serving 87 individuals and partnering with
41 community employers this past fiscal year. 92% of
persons served remain on their job after 3 years
of employment.
HAMILTON COUNTY EXPRESS
Our Transportation Department provides two types
of services; our Janus transportation service is offered
to our consumers who work in our pre-vocational
training program and we manage the Hamilton
County Express (HCE). Yes, we manage that entire
county transportation fleet of 28 buses and vans
employing 18 staff to manage and operate this curb
to curb service. Ridership this past fiscal year for
both services totaled 40,158, and we logged nearly
403,000 miles in 2008. Elaine McGuire directs the
efforts of our transportation services and is our longest
tenured staff of 29 years and every single day
spent in transportation.
Stepping outside the boundaries of traditional services,
we have developed and implemented our Capabilities
Catering and Café and our Hidden Talents
Programs. These programs are all about awakening
ambitions and fulfilling dreams as they provide the
foundation for life altering independence and growth
as individuals nurture their entrepreneurial sprits.
CAPABILITIES CATERING
& CAFÉ
Capabilities Catering and Café provides specific
training that translates into community employment
and success. Janus operates a Café at the Hamilton
County Judicial Building and operates a Café on
site at Janus.
HIDDEN TALENTS
Hidden Talent participants learn to create products
and learn the general skills needed to start a
business. Three of our Hidden Talents signature
items are the bird houses, walking sticks and
greeting cards.
