A MESSAGE TO OUR
Community
As I look back over the past fiscal year I find it amazing what Janus Developmental
Services, Inc. was able to accomplish in the face of a painfully slow
recovery from the worst recession since WWII. The programmatic numbers
are in and looking better than any time in our past.
Through our CARF accredited programs and services we enable our consumers
to turn the corner from risk to resiliency, from adversity to opportunity.
Indeed, we are one of the few agencies in the state of Indiana and the only
corporate based agency in Hamilton County that offers a comprehensive
menu of services that reaches out to all those with disabilities.
Our Indiana First Steps Program served 258 children from birth to 36
months of age last fiscal (half of the year incorporated the new state program
model). 72% of those served will not need to enroll in special education
programs and for every child who does not enter that program the
state saves $13,000. Janus saved the state of Indiana $2,414,880 last year
through our early intervention program. Janus was the first in the state to
secure Network Provider status and we have implemented the new state
mandated program model in which Janus will serve as a Network Provider
for Hamilton County and will be responsible for securing the therapist
required to deliver services to children of Hamilton County. We have been
invited to sit on the Local Planning and Coordination Council of Central Indiana
and we continue to partner with Riverview Hospital in serving Hamilton
County children.
The Community Employment Program partnered with 42 area employers
serving 83 individuals this past fiscal year. 92% of persons served remained
on their job after 4 years of employment; an incredible achievement given
these economic times. Janus facilitated the payment of over $48,000 to
federal, state and local governments in tax dollars through the efforts of our
Community Employment Program.
Our Work Experience Program provides 3 program options:
1. Through our on-site work experience Janus partnered with 47 area
businesses last fiscal year to secure manufacturing work for 78 individuals
with disabilities. This partnership helps local businesses maintain a
competitive edge but what it does for those who come to work at Janus
is immeasurable as this work provides individuals the opportunity to experience
an enormous sense of achievement and a greater quality of life.
2. Hidden Talents, this is an awesome activity as it allows individuals to nurture
their entrepreneurial spirits as participates learn to create products
and learn the general skills needed to start a business. We have partnered
with the Department of Natural Resources and our Hidden Talents
signature items: our bird houses and walking sticks are displayed in six
state park gift shops.
3. We also look forward to the expansion of our Community Garden. Last
year we partnered with 22 businesses and organizations to create a
wonderful space complete with a sensory garden, hummingbird and
butterfly gardens, a produce garden, a waterfall, pond and gazebo.
Individuals with disabilities are able to enjoy gardening as we have incorporated
raised beds and the produce is harvested and sold at the local
Hamilton County Farmer’s Markets. We also will enjoy our continued
partnership with the Hamilton County Master Gardeners for the life of
the garden.
Our Capabilities Catering and Café Program provides specific training
that can be translated into community employment and success. Janus
operates a Café on site to serve as a training ground and we have partnered
with the County Commissioners and Council placing a Cafe at the Hamilton
County Judicial Building which provides a real-life, real-employment opportunity
for individuals. Janus served 18,531 lunches last fiscal year providing a
service to many county departments including the Hamilton County Sheriff’s
Department, the Hamilton County Department of Health and the Hamilton
County Probation Department.
The Habilitation Training Program focuses on helping individuals both
enhance existing skills and learn new ones with the goal to help individuals
live as independently as possible. But just as important, this program encourages
community awareness and involvement. Through this program consumer
community projects this past fiscal year included a Meals on Wheels
route, stocking both the food and baby pantries at Bethel Lutheran Church
and park clean-up for Hamilton County Parks and Recreation; community
service hours totaled 128 hours last fiscal year. We look forward to using
our new constructed space to expand our Group Habilitation Program,
Doorways: A Program of Choice; activities include light fitness, sports, communication
enhancement, community service, culinary skill development,
arts and culture, outdoor nature experiences, gardening, woodworking in
partnership with the Kiwanis and Aktion Club activities.
464,422 miles were logged last fiscal year by our transportation department.
Hamilton County Express employs 21 staff to manage and operate a fleet
of 18 vehicles in providing a curb to curb on demand service; ridership this
past fiscal year totaled 45,329.
41% of total ridership was to and from work thus Janus and HCE facilitated
payment of over $26,000,000 in tax revenue last fiscal year. With the County
Commissioner’s and County Council’s approval we crossed the county
line July 1, 2010. While the cross over from 96 to 86 street is only a half mile
this was a huge leap for Hamilton County. When I first arrived at Janus I was
told that no matter what we can’t cross 96 street and wondered why, is
there some great abyss, do we fall off the face of the earth, well no, across
96 street lies Marion County. There is opportunity in Marion County for
Hamilton County residents and we have had a demand to cross and connect
with Marion County’s IndyGo every day since implementing the service. Last
fiscal year HCE experienced an unusual visit from the “men in black”. James
English, Office of Transit Program Manager informed us that the federal
government needed to do a state transportation audit and believed that we
were the best in the state therefore recommending HCE out of the 58 Indiana
rural transit providers for the federal audit. The “men in black” audited
the entire transportation department, its staff records, books, procedures,
buses and equipment and after two intense days one minor recommendation
was made. Later at a meeting for rural transit providers Mr. English
shared that we did an excellent job representing our state and INDOT. The
group agreed that HCE could host those “men in black” anytime.
In partnership with the Carmel Golden K Kiwanis the Aktion Club was
formed this past fiscal year. This is a service club whose members live with
disabilities. But a disability in no obstacle when it comes to community
service and the JDS Aktion Club is proof that abilities abound and service
makes a difference!
We have enjoyed numerous partnerships over the past fiscal year:
• We have partnered with the Arc of Indiana supporting their campaign
Building Pathways to Empowerment which requires all of us to take a
sincere look at Indiana’s system of programs and services for individuals
with disabilities.
• We have partnered with INARF supporting their campaign: INquietCrisis,
this grassroots campaign seeks to raise awareness about issues facing
Hoosiers with disabilities and the organization that support them. For
more information visit INquietCrisis.org.
• Janus partnered with the Carmel Ambassadors and Accents in which the
Carmel High School competition choir performed and Janus received the
proceeds from the March 16, 2011 A Concert for the Community. Many
thanks to the Carmel Ambassadors and Accents.
• Janus also partnered with the town of Fishers and was the recipient of
proceeds from the Fishers Freedom Festival, the Fishers summer concert
series and the town employee’s maiden golf outing event. We have
indeed found a friend in Fishers and we are grateful.
• We partnered with Duke Energy and KeyBank hosting our volunteer day
at Janus on Tuesday May 24th. We estimate that we completed about
four weeks of work on that day and we thank both Duke Energy and
KeyBank for their efforts.
Janus has established an Advisory Council to work with me and the Board
of Directors in accomplishing our mission/vision driven goals. While retiring
board members are invited to serve on the council, this opportunity for community
service is open to the public. If you are interested in becoming an
Advisory Council member please contact me: conniefsanders@janus-inc.org,
phone: (317) 773-8781, ext. 107.
Again I want to congratulate both Elaine McGuire and Kathie Bowman in receiving
the Mayor of Noblesville’s Proclamation recognizing 31 and 30 years
of service respectfully.
We hosted our third annual Create Connect Commit Ask Event on March
25th and it was our most successful in terms of individual attendees and
money raised—Thank you to all who attended and support our efforts!
As you can see we have been very busy and the Janus team has accomplished
much over the past fiscal year. Ross Perot said that when building
a team, he always searches for people who like to win. If he can’t find any
of those he looks for people who hate to lose. But rather you like to win or
hate to lose teamwork is the ability to work toward a common vision and
represents the ability to direct individual accomplishments toward organizational
objectives. It is the fuel that allows common people to attain uncommon
results and I am thankful for the Janus team, a group finding a way to
be better than their individual parts!
Our appreciation to all who support Janus Developmental Services, Inc. We
invite you to visit us and see the difference we are making.
THE CHAIRMAN’S
Update
I am pleased to report that Janus had an outstanding year despite a difficult
economic climate. This was made possible by our dedicated staff and support
from our Board of Directors. It has been my pleasure to be part of this
effort and I feel very optimistic about our future. The following is a list of
highlights from our last fiscal year.
• We participated with twenty-two local business organizations and the
Hamilton County Master Gardeners to build a beautiful community garden
at our office.
• A program to lease advertising space on our Hamilton County Express buses
has been successfully implemented which provides a new income stream.
• We have contracted with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources
to sell our Hidden Talents products at six state parks with great success.
• Presented our largest “Ask Event” last March which continues to grow
every year.
• Completed the renovation of a significant portion of our office space
and workshop to house our Habilitation Program.
• We received a bequest from the Estate of Mrs. Romana Smith.
• Became the first agency in the state to secure Network Provider Status
for our First Steps Program.
• Established the Janus Advisory Council which is comprised of some past
board members and other interested citizens.
• Assisted the Federal Government in an audit of our transportation program
and received only one minor recommendation.
• Established the Janus Aktion Club which is a service club run by our
consumers.
With your continued support and the guidance of our great staff and Board
of Directors, I am confident that we will continue to provide superior services
to our consumers.
Thank you for your continued interest in Janus.
Sincerely,
Hayes T. O’Brien
and the services offered. The luncheons begin with a tour of the facility and
individuals participating in the Janus Café and Catering program.
Numerous community businesses and individuals support Janus throughout
the year and are involved with services and activities focused on enhancing
the lives of individuals with disabilities.
PROGRAMS &
Services
Janus began in 1979 through a merger of the Hamilton
County Association of Special Citizens and the
Tipton County Association for Retarded Citizens.
Parents of children born with physical and developmental
disabilities came together to form an organization
that would create new opportunities, connect
to the community, and commit to providing a better
quality of life for individuals with disabilities. For over
32 years, Janus has been dedicated to making their
dreams become reality, providing essential services
like transportation, work experience training, and
community employment. Join us in making a difference
in the lives of those individuals with disabilities
in Central Indiana!
INDIANA FIRST STEPS
Serving children from birth to 36 months of age and
directed by Joanne McDonough, a Registered Nurse
who has been with Janus for 22 years. Last fiscal year
we served 258 children.
WORK EXPERIENCE
Providing a workforce to fulfill contracted manufacturing
services. What a partnership, we provide the
venue and a productive workforce of 78 individuals
and area businesses provide the materials and pay
our consumers for a good day’s work. This partnership
results in 47 area businesses being very competitive
and involved in their community, but what
it does for our consumers is immeasurable. This
partnership results in our consumers feeling an enormous
sense of achievement, experiencing a greater
quality of life and allows them to also experience the
joy of giving back to their community.
HIDDEN TALENTS
Hidden Talent participants learn to create products
and learn the general skills needed to start a
business. Three of our Hidden Talents signature
items are the bird houses, walking sticks and
greeting cards.
HABILITATION TRAINING
42 community employers this past fiscal year. 92% of
persons served remain on their job after 4 years
of employment.
HAMILTON COUNTY EXPRESS
the efforts of our transportation services and is our
longest tenured staff of 32 years and every single day
spent in transportation.
Stepping outside the boundaries of traditional services,
we have developed and implemented our Capabilities
Catering and Café and our Hidden Talents
Programs. These programs are all about awakening
ambitions and fulfilling dreams as they provide the
foundation for life altering independence and growth
as individuals nurture their entrepreneurial sprits.
CAPABILITIES CATERING
& CAFÉ
Capabilities Catering and Café provides specific
training that translates into community employment
