Shaping Your Child’s Future

Shaping Your Child’s Future
“There are too many good choices!”—That’s what
I hope you will say when you see the range of new
elementary magnet programs and schools that are
available for your children. More than a dozen compelling,
new programs have joined the existing array
of offerings to enhance our students’ academic, artistic,
and leadership talents. Among them, Cane Run
and Portland will offer an environmental program.
Rangeland and Wellington will offer a health and
fitness for accelerated learning program. Mill Creek is
the district’s Leadership Academy, Lincoln Elementary
is now a performing arts magnet school, and Young
Elementary is Kentucky’s only International Baccalaureate
Candidate School.
Created as the centerpiece of the district’s new student
assignment plan, the new magnets were de-
veloped to pique students’ interests in a variety of
academic disciplines they may never have considered
and to reinforce the value and need of continuing their
education beyond high school graduation. By virtue
of their design, the new programs set high expectations
for students, explore new educational terrain,
serve as models for other schools, integrate innovative
teaching strategies developed by faculty and school
administrators who are talented in their magnet
areas, and are expected to build long-lasting relationships
with local businesses and community organizations.
We believe that enabling students to learn the
core curriculum through exciting thematic experiences
will have a life-long impact on their attitude toward
learning and their performance in school.
The phrase shaping the future is much more than the
tag line of the Jefferson County Public School (JCPS)

The JCPS Elementary Magnet Programs
District. The phrase underscores the belief that education
is the catalyst that will enhance the quality of
every student’s life and, in doing so, help make Louisville
a more competitive, innovative, and vibrant hub
for economic development.
We don’t expect every student who attends the performing
arts magnet to pursue a career in show
business, but a student may develop such a strong
interest and skill in music, for example, that he or
she earns a college scholarship. Not every student in
the environmental studies program will become an
environmentalist, but participation could result in
higher scores in science on college entrance exams.
Or students may simply acquire and sustain a strong
interest in learning by having the opportunity to learn
the academic curriculum in a way that interests and
engages them and motivates them to work harder and
achieve at higher levels. What these programs offer
students is the opportunity to explore their interests,
learn new skills, pursue an emerging talent, view their
world from a new perspective, and develop respect for
and understanding of diverse ideas and people.
This brochure provides a brief overview of the magnet
programs available to elementary students. Once you
have reviewed it, I encourage you to call the schools
with programs that interest you and schedule a visit.
I am confident you will like what you see. Then your
dilemma will be “too many good choices!”
characterized by more individual attention on students’ needs, smaller class
sizes, and support for staff within a culture of professional growth. Supported
by challenging inquiry-based curricular materials, teachers customize
the curriculum for each student. The small class sizes enable the schools
to focus on creating caring and nurturing classroom and school communities.
Additional highlights of the program include a full-time nurse, an
instructional coach to support high-quality instruction, and a partnership
with the University of Louisville to ensure a rigorous academic and social
curriculum.
Fairdale
Coral Ridge
Visual Arts Program—Price and Rutherford
schools’ student art galleries, what do they see, what are they thinking, and
how do they interpret the art in front of them? Students develop an understanding
artists. Collaborative partnerships with leading arts groups, such as the
Louisville Visual Art Association, Speed Museum, and the Kentucky Museum
of Art and Craft, help ensure that rich connections between art and the
Help your child excel by choosing an environment that offers more individual
attention and smaller class sizes. With class sizes averaging 20 students,
teachers are able to individually tailor instruction so that each child is
