Awards, honours, projects, significant lectures<br />
Fellows<br />
Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Jean Bacon has been awarded an Honorary Doctorate by the Open <strong>University</strong>.<br />
She has also been awarded an EPSRC Research Grant for her project CloudSafetyNet.<br />
Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Jeremy Baumberg has been awarded the <strong>2013</strong> ERC Advanced Investigator<br />
grant. He was also given the <strong>2013</strong> Young Medal and Prize by the Institute <strong>of</strong> Physics for<br />
his pioneering contributions to nanophotonics.<br />
Dr Natalia Berl<strong>of</strong>f has been awarded a Pr<strong>of</strong>essorship in the Department <strong>of</strong> Applied<br />
Mathematics and Theoretical Physics.<br />
Dr James Clackson has been awarded Readership in the Faculty <strong>of</strong> Classics. He also<br />
delivered the Margaret Heavey Memorial lecture at NUI Galway in March <strong>2013</strong>.<br />
Dr Stuart Clarke has been awarded a Pr<strong>of</strong>essorship in the Department <strong>of</strong> Chemistry.<br />
Pr<strong>of</strong>essor James Crawford has been awarded a Companion <strong>of</strong> the Order <strong>of</strong> Australia for<br />
eminent service to the law through his significant contributions to international and<br />
constitutional legal practice, reform and arbitration.<br />
Dr Pau Figueras has been elected a “Stephen Hawking Advanced Research Fellow” at the<br />
Department <strong>of</strong> Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics (DAMTP).<br />
Dr Mary Laven has been appointed Reader in the Faculty <strong>of</strong> History. She has also (along<br />
with two colleagues) been awarded ¤2.3m in ERC Synergy funding to launch the<br />
interdisciplinary project “Domestic Devotions: The Place <strong>of</strong> Piety in the Renaissance<br />
Italian Home”.<br />
Dr David Leith has been elected an Advanced Research Fellow at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Exeter.<br />
Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Robert Mair delivered the <strong>Cambridge</strong> <strong>Annual</strong> Red Cross Lecture in April <strong>2013</strong><br />
‘What’s going on underground? Tunnelling into the future for our cities’. He was<br />
interviewed on the BBC Radio 4 ‘The Life Scientific’ programme in January <strong>2013</strong> and on<br />
their Frontiers programme on ‘Crossrail Tunnelling’ in July <strong>2013</strong>. He was appointed a<br />
member <strong>of</strong> the UK Government’s Construction Industry Strategy Advisory Council; its<br />
report was published in July <strong>2013</strong>.<br />
Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Juliet Mitchell has been elected the Leverhulme Emeritus Fellow in the<br />
Department <strong>of</strong> Politics, Psychology, Sociology and International Studies. She has also<br />
been awarded a two-year grant for a research project and book on ‘Siblings in<br />
Psychoanalysis and in the Plays <strong>of</strong> Shakespeare’. She has been elected a Pr<strong>of</strong>essorial<br />
Research Associate in Theoretical Psychoanalysis at UCL, and is currently the Mellon<br />
Visiting Scholar at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Witwatersrand, South Africa.<br />
Dr Véronique Mottier was appointed Director <strong>of</strong> the Laboratoire de Sociologie <strong>of</strong> the<br />
<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Lausanne, a research unit <strong>of</strong> 6 pr<strong>of</strong>essors and 29 research staff, where she<br />
also holds a part-time Pr<strong>of</strong>essorship in Sociology. She also organised (with Robbie<br />
Duschinsky) a conference titled ‘Classifying Sex: Debating DSM-5’ on 4 & 5 July <strong>2013</strong>,
