RATIONALE FOR CHOOSING INDICATOR: Obesity is a preventable<br />

condition that affects their quality and length of life. Over the past<br />

20 years, obesity among adults has risen signifi cantly in the United<br />

States. <strong>The</strong>se increasing rates signify a growing public health threat.<br />

Overweight and obesity substantially raise the risk of illness from high<br />

blood pressure, high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, heart disease,<br />

stroke, gallbladder disease, arthritis, sleep disturbances, breathing<br />

problems, and certain types of cancer. 3<br />

HOW ARE WE DOING? According to the Michigan Behavioral Risk<br />

Factor Survey data, approximately 30% of Calhoun County residents<br />

are overweight and nearly 36% are obese. Approximately 51% of<br />

Calhoun County residents do not meet the recommended levels of<br />

physical activity, a key strategy for maintaining a healthy weight.<br />

Approximately 81% of Calhoun County residents do not consume fruits<br />

and vegetables at least fi ve times per day.<br />
