From the Board of Trustees Dear Parents Another year and what a year! Thank you for attending the Senior Academic Prize giving to celebrate the successes of our young women. In sport , culture and academia, our girls have excelled themselves this year. Music Scholarships The Board Music Scholarships are available again for next year. Two are available for year 8 students who will attend our school next year and two are available for Year 10 students who is moving into Year 11 next year. Applicants are asked to write to the Principal outlining their music experience. A condition of the Scholarship is that the student joins the Kelston Girls’ College Chamber Group. Fundraising There has been frequent mention in the media this year of the financial difficulties schools face in this time of recession. Many parents at our school have struggled to pay the school donation and the swine flu epidemic meant we had fewer international students studying at Kelston Girls’ College. Interest rates have also been down. This has meant that although we have managed to stay within budget, we are struggling to find enough money to cover sport and ICT expenses in 2010. We wish to start a Fund raising Committee of parents and Board members. It you are interested in joining the committee please ring me, James Prescott or the Principal Mrs Fox on 827 9622 or email ppa@kelstongirls.school.nz with your name and contact details. We will call our first meeting early in the New Year. Board Elections If you are thinking about volunteering to be on the Board next year, please ring me on 09 827 9622 Or email on ppa@kelstongirls.school.nz. We are looking for new Board members. Elections are on 7th May 2010. I wish to thank my Board for their commitment and support this year. I thank Principal Fox for her continued focus on learning success for every young woman. I thank the teachers and support staff for their energy and support for Kelston Girls. I wish you all a happy festive season and a safe summer vacation. James Prescott BOT Chairman Kelston Girls’ College BOT Design a Flag Competition Students are asked to design a flag for Kelston Girls’ College that reflects what our school represents. The winning design will be flown at the front of the school. Closing date: 19 February 2010 TSUNAMI TYPHOON APPEAL – $2,380.50 RAISED! Talofa lava! When Samoa and Tonga was hit by the Tsunami, and the Philippines and Indonesia suffered a typhoon, there was an overwhelming response from the staff and students of Kelston Girls’ College to help. The Student Council were unanimous in their support for the appeal. There have been a number of fundraising events organised and run by our school. We have sold cakes, island food, bracelets and drinks at lunchtime; we have held a lunchtime concert featuring our own students and outside guests like Matt Luatua and SaraJane Elika; the Indians and Muslims helped out by donating all the proceeds for their Diwali concert to the Tsunami Appeal; Whaea Parehuia Nepe, the Auhia Kia Mohio Kia Rangatira class and the Marae Committee generously gave proceeds of the mufti day; we held our own mufti day and a junior social and a walkathon. Our goal was to reach $2,000.00. Under the leadership of our junior student volunteers, we managed to raise a Grand Total of $2,380.50!! Robin Greig, Red Cross President of the Howick and Bucklands Beach branches will be joining us at our assembly on Friday 20 November 2009 to receive our donation. We are pleased to report that Red Cross will be using 100% of our donation for the appeal fund. A sincere thanks to all the staff, students and our wider community for donating generously to help rebuild the countries affected by natural disasters this year.
