We are as conscious of this now as we ever have been. We will consider men in warfare – their experience, fighting spirit and individual arms, and reflect upon the nature of warfare and those men and women who are caught in its crossfire. You will reflect upon Wilfred Owen’s accusation: ‘The Old Lie’ – Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori. Literature On the Road: Exploring Travel Literature Denyse Straker MA 8 weeks from 2 February Thursdays 10am – 12 noon Course fee: £100 Course Code: 11-TON-025 This course explores some factual and fictional accounts of journeys including H. G. Wells’ The Time Machine, Harrer’s Seven Years in Tibet, Palin’s Sahara and Gudrun Pausewang’s Final Journey. These are controversial, unforgettable texts which demonstrate the imaginative power of travel literature. Madness and Medicine Jo Collins PhD Study Day: Friday 24 February 10am – 4pm Course fee: £30 Course Code: 11-TON-029 We will consider how authors such as Sylvia Plath, Ken Kesey and Charlotte Perkins Gilman engage with contemporary medical debates and how illness is used as a metaphor to explore larger themes such as gender, identity, conformity and rebellion. ‘What should they know of England?’: Writing the British Empire Phillip Stevenson PhD Study Day: Monday 5 March 10am – 4pm Course fee: £30 Course Code: 11-TON-028 This study day will examine literary representations of the British Empire and explore the ways in which literary narratives have been used to report, legitimise, and criticise the imperial project. Psychology The Seven Ages of Man – Changes Across the Life Span Sarah Hamilton BA (Hons) RN Cert Ed LCH MHMA 8 weeks from 2 February Thursdays 7 – 9pm Course fee: £100 Course Code 11-TON-026 We will study topics and stages beyond adolescence such as relationships, behaviour and life events. Within that we consider whether nature or nurture has the greatest influence. Does a midlife crisis exist? There will be opportunity to learn about conditions such as Depression and Alzheimers.
