The <strong>Census</strong>.<br />
(d) The preliminary enumeration commenced on the 15th <strong>of</strong> January 196 1 and was completed<br />
on the 25th <strong>of</strong> February 1 901. * * *<br />
(e) The final-enumeration.—No difficulty was experienced during the final enumeration,<br />
which commenced at 8 p.m. and was completed about 1 A.M. * * * The <strong>Census</strong><br />
Supervisors and Enumerators worked well, but I specially wish to bring to notice the energy<br />
and zeal <strong>of</strong> Maung San Pe, Head Clerk, Municipal <strong>of</strong>fice, on whom, as Charge Superintendent,<br />
devolved the more arduous part <strong>of</strong> the work.<br />
(f)<br />
The circle summaries were received on the 2nd and 3rd March <strong>1901</strong> by the Charge<br />
Superintendent, and, after check at the Municipal <strong>of</strong>fice, were forwarded with the charge<br />
summary to the <strong>of</strong>fice <strong>of</strong> the Superintendent <strong>of</strong> Land Records on the afternoon <strong>of</strong> the 4th<br />
March <strong>1901</strong>.<br />
(g) Nil.<br />
(k) No prosecution under the <strong>Census</strong> Act was necessary and the attitude <strong>of</strong> the people<br />
was acquiescent and friendly.<br />
ft) The total cost to the Municipality, * * * was Rs. 40-13-0.<br />
ft) Having regard to the intelligence and close supervision <strong>of</strong> the Supervisors and <strong>of</strong> the<br />
Charge Superintendent, who had some experience <strong>of</strong> the work during the last <strong>Census</strong>, the<br />
results <strong>of</strong> the enumeration may be accepted as very approximately correct. * * *<br />
(k) Vital statistics.—There has been no serious epidemic during the decade ending<br />
<strong>1901</strong>. The number <strong>of</strong> births amounted to 7,067 and deaths to 7,082. * * *<br />

Operations, <strong>Burma</strong> (through the Deputy Commissioner, Prome),—No. 461, dated the 21st March <strong>1901</strong>.<br />
With reference to your Circular No. 24 <strong>of</strong> 190!, I have the honour to submit, as belowj<br />
a brief report on the <strong>Census</strong> operations.<br />
(a) The general register <strong>of</strong> villages or towns and <strong>of</strong> the circle list was prepared in the<br />
Deputy Commissioner's <strong>of</strong>fice, Prome.<br />
(6) The numbering <strong>of</strong> houses was commenced on the 22nd October and completed on the<br />
6th November 1900.<br />
(c) The agency employed consisted <strong>of</strong> 1 Charge Superintendent, 9 Supervisors, and 66<br />
Enumerators.<br />
The Charge<br />

Superintendent was the Municipal Secretary, the Supervisors were the headmen<br />
oi wards, and the Enumerators were mostly traders <strong>of</strong> the town. They were all engaged<br />

unpaid.<br />
(d) The preliminary enumeration was commenced on the 31st January and completed on<br />
the 25th February 1 90 1 .<br />
The record <strong>of</strong> the preliminary enumeration was tested by the Supervisors,<br />
who visited every house.<br />

would select the following <strong>of</strong>ficers for special commendation, namely<br />
(1) Maung Sein Da, Municipal Secretary and Charge Superintendent, who took an<br />
intelligent interest in the work and carefully instructed his Supervisors and<br />
Enumerators and finally had it accurately and expeditiously carried out<br />
(2) Maung Po Hlaing, thugyi <strong>of</strong> Kyundawhla circle and Supervisor <strong>of</strong> Okpo ward<br />
(3) Maung<br />

Tha Aung, headmen <strong>of</strong> Hinthagan ward and Supervisor.<br />

The charge and circle summaries were completed and submitted to the Deputy Commissioner,<br />
Prome, on the evening <strong>of</strong> the 3rd March.<br />
(g) Nil.<br />
{h) The attitude <strong>of</strong> the people was good and there were no prosecutions under the Act<br />
(z) The total actual cost <strong>of</strong> the operations was Rs. 27-2-3.<br />
(/) The results obtained Were, I believe, correct.<br />
(k) According to the particulars that can be gathered from the births and deaths returns<br />
<strong>of</strong> the past 10 years (1891 to 1900), the population <strong>of</strong> the town should be 1 1,209 as against the<br />
present figures 1 1 ,044.<br />
But some <strong>of</strong> the inhabitants are said to have gone to the Pegu district, where work is<br />
more plentiful and better paid, and some have temporarily shifted outside the municipal limits<br />
in order to manufacture dilon on the Rangoon-Prome road-sides for the Public Works Department.<br />
