APPENDICES.<br />

(/) The preparation <strong>of</strong> the district, charge, and circle summaries.—The charge and<br />

circle summaries were prepared under the direct supervision <strong>of</strong> the Charge Superintendents,<br />

who distributed themselves at appointed centres to receive them from the Supervisors.<br />

The Myatsawnyinaung Pagoda, 7 miles south-east <strong>of</strong> Toungoo, has its annual Pagoda<br />

festival which attracts some 1,273 visitors to it. This year the big day happened to fall on<br />

the 1st March. Mr. Field and myself (the Subdivisional Officer) had a preliminary survey<br />

<strong>of</strong> the pagoda, its surroundings and approaches and made arrangements accordingly to<br />

cope with the expected crowd by enlisting' 88 Enumerators from amongst the pagoda lugyis,<br />

trustees, and <strong>of</strong>fice clerks. These were allotted their respective blocks and Supervisors their<br />

circles round about the pagoda armed with passes. The Deputy Commissioner and myself<br />

visited the pagoda on the morning <strong>of</strong> the 1st March and satisfied ourselves as to the arrangements<br />

made.<br />

Myself, Myooks Maung Gyi and Maung Kyaw, together with Mr. Molloy, the District<br />

Superintendent <strong>of</strong> Police, remained throughout that day and night at the pagoda and its<br />

neighbourhood, inspecting and checking the work done.<br />

(a) The preparation <strong>of</strong> the general register <strong>of</strong> villages (Appendix A) was conducted<br />

under the direct supervision <strong>of</strong> the Deputy Commissioner. * * *<br />

(6) The numbering <strong>of</strong> the houses began from the 15th January <strong>1901</strong> and was not completed<br />

in some parts <strong>of</strong> the Kyaukkyi township till the 15th February <strong>1901</strong>. * * *<br />

(c) There were two Charge Superintendents, one for each township. * * *<br />

(d) The* preliminary enumeration commenced from the 15th January and was for the<br />

greater part completed by the end <strong>of</strong> that month.<br />

[f) The charge and circle summaries were prepared under the direct supervision <strong>of</strong><br />

the Charge Superintendents.<br />

Karen Hills.<br />

(a) The preparation <strong>of</strong> the general register and circle list was done personally by the<br />

Deputy Commissioner. * * *<br />

(b) The numbering <strong>of</strong> houses was commenced at different periods in the Karen Hills<br />

during November and December 1900. * * *<br />

(c) There were two Charge Superintendents. * * *<br />

The Supervisors and Enumerators employed were chiefly village headmen, sayas or<br />

pastors <strong>of</strong> villagers, and ten-house gaungs <strong>of</strong> villages in the plains.<br />

{d) The preliminary enumeration was commenced on or about the 15th January and<br />

was completed<br />

(e) The final enumeration was well done by both the Charge Superintendents, but the<br />

Leiktho Myook showed the most zeal and was the first man in the Toungoo district to<br />

submit his returns.<br />

(/) The charge and circle summaries were prepared by the Charge Superintendents<br />

or under their direct supervision.<br />
