O my God, I believe that you
created my soul united to a body
that is not made to do great
physical feats but to be a sacred
dwelling for your Holy presence,
especially when I receive you in
the Holy Eucharist. I want to
thank you for the dignity of my
body, which is the temple of the
Holy Spirit. I am sorry that I forget
your presence at times.
Whatever fun I may have in
sports, I promise that I will try to
set aside time to pray every day.
Thank you, God, for the gift of my
body. Amen.
My Vocation Story
Dear brothers and sisters
in Christ,
I am asked to introduce
myself to the readers of
this newsletter. My name
is Brother Joseph, and I
am a religious Brother
belonging to the
Congregation of Brothers
of St. Patrick also known
as Patrician Brothers. At
present, I reside in Orange
County, California
undergoing formation.
Many of you may not be familiar with
religious Brothers. St. Francis of Assisi,
the beloved saint of our Church was a
Brother. Professing the vows of poverty,
obedience, and chastity, Brothers live
in community, and give witness to Christ
through various ministries such as
teaching, social work, health care,
counseling, and so on. I was blessed
to discover this unique vocation in our
Church and now, I will share briefly my
vocation story.
I was born in India to Joy and Molly
Akkelkottaram. Typical of most Knanaya
families in Kerala, my family attended
mass every Sunday, prayed daily at
home, and actively participated in parish
activities. As a child, I was a member of
Mission League, a mission society in
Zero Malabar Church under the
patronage of St. Therese of Little Child.
My parents also send me to a Catholic
school. Thus I was brought up in a
spiritual climate which helped to
embrace faith and Christian values.
The first inspiration to enter religious life
came to me when I was thirteen. I felt
God’s calling to follow Jesus in a special
way. At the time I knew little about religious
life and wasn’t mature enough to take any
serious steps. So I continued my studies.
However, the spark of vocation was
growing within me. After I completed the
12 th grade, my father sent me to Chicago
to study Computer Engineering. During
my university studies I was active in
campus ministry (a youth group akin to
Jesus Youth) which helped me to grow
spiritually. Upon graduation, I started
working for IBM in Minnesota. I enjoyed
my work very much but at a deeper level I
was longing for true happiness which I
knew only Jesus can give. So I decided
to consider religious life seriously and
providently I met Br. Benedict Mavelil, FSP
during a visit to Florida. Thus I came to
know about the life and work of Brothers
of St. Patrick. After visiting several of their
communities in California and India, it was
clear to me that God was calling me to
this institute. I joined the Patrician Brothers
as an aspirant in 2008, and made my first
profession in 2010. I request your prayers
for my spiritual growth and ministry. As our
Church celebrates the ‘Year of Mission’ let
us pray that God may grant many more
missionary vocations from our community.
I am also asked to
share about my
novitiate
experience.
Novitiate is a time
set aside by the
Church to train the
new candidates
entering religious
life. Usually, it lasts
two years and for
me it was a grace
filled time. I felt the
presence of the
Lord in many ways especially in prayer,
sacraments, and community life. After
the completion of novitiate, I made the
first vows which, if God willing, I will
renew every year until my final
profession. This stage of formation is
known as scholasticate and can last from
four to six years. Currently, I am a
second year scholastic and my main
responsibility now is to study theology
and education.
Finally, I would like to share a Scripture
verse with our young people. It comes
from Jeremiah 1:5: “Before I formed
you in the womb I knew you, before
you were born I dedicated you..” Dear
youth, God loves you and has a great
plan for your life. Make every effort to
know Him. Personal prayer, attending
mass, and volunteering in various
Church ministries are some excellent
ways to get closer to Him. When you
take one step He will run towards you
and will reveal your life vocation! May
we all have the grace to say “yes” to God
like Mary, our heavenly Mother. God
bless.
Br. Joseph, FSP

Bishop Makil
B ishop
Mathew
Makil was
the first
vicar
apostolic of kottayam diocese.
The post of vicar apostolic is similar
to a Bishop. He was the first
knanaya to become a Bishop.
He was born on 27th March 1851
at Manjoor in Kottayam District. At
the age of 23 he was ordained as
a priest. He became the vicar
general of knanaites under Bishop
Lavinge. On 11th June 1896 he
was appointed as the first bishop
of changanacherry. Most of the
knanaya people were also part of
changanacherry then. As bishop
of changanacherry he encountered lot
of difficulties since he belonged a
minority community . But he patiently
suffered all the difficulties. He was
able to convince the pope about
having a separate diocese for
knanaya people.
Pope transferred Mar Makil from
changanacherry and appointed him
as the first vicar apostolic of kottayam
on 29th august 1911 established
specially for the knanaya people.
Bishop makil died on 26th January
1914.
Bishop makil lead a holy life and was
well known as a devout Bishop. He
worked hard for the well being of
Knanaya people by establishing
churches, schools, convents etc.
The process to recognize Bishop
Makil as a saint has been started in
Kottayam . so bishop makil is known
as Servant of God Bishop Makil.
Let us pray that Bishop Makil be
made a saint one day .
We too are called to lead a holy life
like Bishop Makil and work for the
progress of our people by being
active in our church and community.
Remebember what Jesus will say
at the last judgement . when you
do something to the least of your
brothers you do that to me .
(This is a supplement paper
discussed by all the classes at
sacred heart religious education
school as part of the Sunday
carriculam)
