I was looking after my fouryear-old
granddaughter, Stella,
one day last year, and after
watching some television -
Knowledge Kids, naturally - she
asked me to set her up on my
computer. She was interested
in a particular game site where
she could point and click on a
set of clothes and play dress up.
Today, at five years of age,
Stella zips around the web
on her own - watching Swan
Lake and Nutcracker videos on
YouTube, and playing all sorts
of games. She’s even recorded
herself eating (and wearing)
chocolate cupcake icing and
singing a sugar-fuelled song.
Her mom, Kiki, uploaded it to
Facebook so family and friends
could share the experience.
When we launched our
children’s website this past
winter, I asked Stella to test our
newly commissioned games
that feature the Knowledge
Kids characters Chip, Inkie
and Luna. Her response was
positive, but she complained
that one of our point and
click games called “Decorate
the Dam” was too fast and
Thank You
frustrating. (The game was
eventually slowed down.)
All this to say how much
children’s television has fundamentally
changed since my
own days of sitting passively
in front of a neighbour’s TV set
watching The Lone Ranger and
Roy Rogers. Today, children
are bombarded by content and
many different ways of consuming
and interacting with media.
What hasn’t changed is the
need for parents and caregivers
to be involved in young children’s
viewing choices. As options
expand beyond television
to computers, mobile phones
and now tablets, it becomes
increasingly important for young
children’s viewing to be supervised.
Realistically, though, that’s
not always possible. That’s why
families depend on Knowledge
Kids to serve as a trusted source
of quality content: offering
programs, games and activities
that promote literacy and
learning, that pass on positive
social values such as caring and
sharing, and that are free from
the influence of commercial
advertising.
Knowledge Kids is a place
where kids can explore the
world in a safe and positive
environment. As Stella’s
grandfather, that gives me
great comfort.
Great Stories are Meant to Be Shared
With summer here, it’s a great time to catch up on some reading.
Not just the bestsellers stacked up on your own wish list, but
books you’ve been longing to share with the kids: old favourites
from your childhood, or new treasures you’ve come to love.
One way to foster interest in reading – particularly if a little
encouragement is needed – is through books with familiar
characters, like the favourite friends on Knowledge Kids. After all,
whether in print or on the screen, imaginative storylines, engaging
characters and delightful visuals are the hallmarks of great stories
for kids.
Many of our shows are based on much-loved children’s books,
among them classics such as Arthur and The Berenstain Bears,
and newcomers like Harry and His Bucket Full of Dinosaurs.
We’ve selected these shows for Knowledge Kids because their
creators have shown the same loving attention to detail and quality
as the original authors, and because they spark young viewers’
imaginations and expose them to new ideas.
Coming this September to Knowledge Kids are two new
animated series based on books. Anyone who’s been in charge
of bedtime stories will know the heartwarming bestseller Guess
How Much I Love You. This beautiful story – about a bunny and his
father expressing their love for each other – takes on new life as
time passes and the seasons change in the meadow. Poppy Cat, the
main character in a British book series, is about a little cat with a big
imagination who gets into all sorts of adventures with her friends.
And later this year, look for The Little Prince, based on the
classic novel about a little prince who leaves his home planet to
see what the rest of the universe is like.
Look out for some great reading recommendations for preschoolers on KnowledgeKids.ca in the activities section.
What the Stars are Reading…
The stars, of course,
are our hosts on
Knowledge Kids:
Luna the owl, Chip
the beaver and Inkie
the octopus. And
they love books! Just
don’t tell Chip where
paper comes from…
Luna:
Martha Speaks
Susan Meddaugh’s books, and
the TV series based on them,
star an otherwise ordinary dog
– Martha – whose fondness
for alphabet soup gives her the
ability to speak. A talking dog is
funny enough, but the wordplay
also gets kids (and owls) hooting
with laughter. Besides, Luna
loves learning new things, so it’s
no wonder she feels a certain
kinship with Martha. Watch
it weekdays at 5:30pm and
weekends at 10:30am.
Chip:
George Shrinks
Industrious beaver Chip likes to
see what new gadgets the pintsized
George and his inventor
father come up. Now he’s reading
the original picture book
by Canadian author William
Joyce. Beautifully illustrated,
it tells the story of a boy who
wakes up to discover he has
shrunk to the size of a mouse,
and the adventures that follow.
Watch it weekdays at 9:30am
and 4:30pm and weekends at
7:30am.
Inkie:
Charlie and Lola
Just like Inkie, Charlie’s little
sister Lola is outgoing and funny
and full of surprises. Her antics
– like refusing to go to bed on
time and taking over Charlie’s
birthday party – are rendered
ever-so-charming by author
Lauren Child’s funky artwork.
As a bonus, there are enough
books about the irresistible
siblings to keep Inkie reading all
summer long. Watch it weekdays
What do I want to express?
The subject means little. The
arrangement, the design, colour,
shape, depth, light, space, mood,
movement, balance, not one or all of
these fills the bill. There is something
additional, a breath that draws your
breath into its breathing, a heartbeat
that pounds on yours, a recognition of
the oneness of all things.
Emily Carr: Winds of Heaven
Monday, August 1 at 9pm
Repeats at midnight
Michael Ostroff’s acclaimed film is an impressionistic exploration
of the spirit that informed the solitary life of one
of BC’s – and Canada’s – most celebrated and irrepressible
painters. Emily Carr began painting in an era when women
didn’t, traveling to remote locations that few professional
adventurers chose to go. Not only did she adopt the
painting techniques of modernism, when such ideas were
considered dangerous, Carr chronicled the extraordinary
art and culture of native peoples, who were invisible to
the dominant culture. Working from first-hand accounts,
letters, diaries and her published writings, the film dispels
the myth of “Emily the eccentric” to present a portrait of a
living, breathing, tough, vulnerable, smart and ultimately
sympathetic Carr.
“Ambitious, impressionistic, and endowed with a stunning
wealth of archival imagery, Winds of Heaven stands as the
definitive, critical film portrait of Emily Carr.”
The Rape of Europa
Tuesdays at 8pm, beginning July 26
Repeats Thursdays at midnight
Based on Lynn H. Nicholas’ groundbreaking book, The Rape of Europa tells the
epic story of the systematic theft, deliberate destruction and miraculous survival of
Europe’s art treasures during Hitler’s Third Reich. Today, more than sixty years later,
the legacy of this tragic history continues to play out as families and nations fight
over the fate of ill-gotten spoils of war. Narrated by actress Joan Allen, this two-part
series is a fascinating chronicle of the battle over the very survival of centuries of
western culture.
Captain James Rorimer supervises the safeguarding
of art stolen from French Jews and
stored during the war at Schloss Neuschwanstein
in southern Bavaria.
Stolen Treasure
According to US estimates, the Nazis stole one-fifth of the known artworks in Europe,
among them Gustav Klimt’s sensuous gold-flecked Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I
(detail from painting, above). Bloch-Bauer was a wealthy Viennese society woman
and hostess of a popular salon. The painting was commissioned by her husband, a
wealthy Jewish sugar magnate, and took Klimt three years to complete. It was seized
by the Nazis in 1938 along with much of the contents of the Bloch-Bauers’ home.
After years of legal battles, the painting was finally returned to her great-niece, Maria
Altmann, in 2006. She subsequently sold it to cosmetics heir Ronald Lauder for a
record $135 million. It is now displayed in Lauder’s Neue Galerie in New York City.
Gareth Malone Goes to Glyndebourne
Thursdays at 8pm, beginning July 14
Repeats Saturdays at 5pm
Gareth Malone, star of The Choir, takes on one of his biggest
challenges yet – to incorporate a youth chorus into a new opera
being staged at the prestigious Glyndebourne Opera House.
In this three-part series, choirmaster Gareth joins the creative and production
teams at Glyndebourne to help put on Knight Crew, a modern retelling
of the King Arthur legend. Gareth’s role is to incorporate a large-scale
chorus into the opera, recruiting young people from the local community.
A talent search across East Sussex’s schools, colleges and youth groups
brings in a host of teen hopefuls, most with no experience beyond the odd
school show. As opening night draws nearer, will Gareth be able to transform
his chorus into opera singers in time?
Opera Appeal
What better way to get young people interested in opera than to give
them a story they can relate to? Knight Crew, based on a novel of the same
name by Nicky Singer, contains themes that resonate with teens: gang culture,
social exclusion, young love, and the ‘Holy Grail’ of something beyond
oneself. It also places a group of young people at the core of its story – the
Knight Crew chorus, onstage throughout.
NEW SEASON
Born and Bred
Sundays at 8pm, beginning August 14
Just what the doctor ordered…a heartwarming dose of cozy British
cheer! Born and Bred, a nostalgic family drama set in the 1950s in the
picture-perfect village of Ormston, is back with new episodes, and
changes are afoot for the quirky villagers. With the cottage hospital
now fully established, local doctor Arthur Gilder is beginning to think
seriously about retirement. Meanwhile, there’s an engagement to
celebrate and trouble for pub landlady, Phyllis, when her ex-husband
walks back into her life. Turmoil aside, the show is a good-humoured,
gentle tonic – best taken with a spot of tea and biscuits.
A Likeable Lad
Actor James Bolam, who plays Dr. Arthur Gilder in Born and Bred, is a familiar face on
Knowledge. He stars as retired detective Jack Halford in the hit series New Tricks (Fridays
at 8pm and 9pm), was “Grandpa” in the kids’ series Grandpa in My Pocket, and had the
lead role in the popular miniseries, The Missing Postman.
Bolam first made his name on British television in the 1960s, when he played loveable
rogue Terry Collier in the sitcom The Likely Lads, about two best mates from northeast England.
It was a massive hit, watched by half the population of Britain at the time. A second
series and feature film followed in the 1970s, but Bolam and his co-star Rodney Bewes had
a falling out and haven’t spoken to each other since. The rift allegedly came about when
Bewes revealed, in an interview, Bolam’s shocked reaction when he found out his wife was
pregnant.
A multitude of TV roles followed for Bolam, among them Only When I Laugh, When
the Boat Comes In, and The Beiderbecke Trilogy. He also played notorious serial killer Harold
Shipman in the drama Shipman.
Bolam is known for being guarded about his privacy, reflecting on this in a rare interview
with The Independent: “One should be judged not by what one is, but by what one
does,” he mused. “Also, the media encourage the notion that you are like your parts. Does
that mean that you can’t play Macbeth unless you go out and murder someone, or that you
can only play Hamlet if you don’t like your mother? It’s just acting.”
All That Jazz
Feisty and flamboyant, jazz
singer Anita O’Day could
swing with the best onstage,
belting out bebop rhythms
with passion and precision.
Offstage, she survived 20
years of addiction, four failed
marriages and time in jail, as
chronicled in the documentary
Anita O’Day: The Life of a Jazz
Singer (Thursday at 9pm). But
the film is more a portrait of
an artist and her genius than
a salacious biography of drug
and alcohol addiction. “As
filmmakers we aspired to show
someone who, despite the life
that she led, lived through her
artistry,” says co-director Ian
McCrudden. “And that was
the first and most lasting thing
that she left behind.”
His name may not be familiar,
but the movies he worked
on are Hollywood classics.
German-born composer Franz
Waxman created the scores for
hundreds of films, among them
Rear Window, Sunset Boulevard
and Philadelphia Story. Waxman
was one of the many talented
people who fled Germany
after Hitler banned Jews from
working in its movie industry, a
story chronicled in the two-part
series Cinema’s Exiles: From
Hitler to Hollywood (Tuesday
at 8pm). In fact, it was his
grandson, John Waxman, who
approached producer Karen
Thomas with the idea for the
documentary – a tribute to
exiles who helped make American
system, which provides
over 350,000 impoverished
Not only has El Sistema created
great social change, it has
produced musicians that are
among the world’s best. With
such success, other countries
are looking to replicate it. In
Canada, the New Brunswick
Every time I sit down to Knowledge Network I’m so glad we found each other! Through the winter I’ve been
entranced as I watch Billy Connolly travel through the Northwest Passage and the lovely piece on Russia.
Every week is a new and exciting adventure. Elizabeth, 100 Mile House What would we do without you?
Too many programs that we enjoy to list – what a lifesaver you are. Anne, Courtenay Thank you again
for introducing thought-provoking documentaries and programs that feed my mind and soul! Richard,
Victoria I appreciate the quality of the programming, which has only seemed to improve year by year.
Thank you for the programs and even all those intriguing little fillers, with their local and Canadian
content. Elaine, Vancouver I’m so glad to finally be able to join the Knowledge family. To have a worldclass
television station right here in BC is such a privilege. Thank you so much for bringing us wonderful
programs that teach us, instead of commercial television that seems bent on demoralizing the public
– catering to the worst in us instead of the best. Thank you for always having something wonderful on
around dinner time for families to watch together and for the intelligent shows we can always count on
for evening viewing. Diane, Vernon I want to tell you what a marvelous collection of programming you
have put together. I am most impressed with its variety and high caliber and am looking forward to being
educated and entertained. Rosemary, Delta Thank you for another year of excellence in programming.
I enjoyed too many programs to list… Kimberley, West Vancouver In the evenings I decide which station
to tune into and that is most of the time your network. As a senior it is great to keep using your brain with
good programs and to stay alert about many things in this world. Beatrix, Vancouver Concerts? Yes!
Opera? Yes! Thank you so much for keeping us intelligently entertained! Duanne, Maple Ridge We
still watch your station far more than any other. Why? Because you have the programs we enjoy such as
Heartbeat, Doc Martin, Midsomer Murders, Poirot…Thanks for being there for us. Susan, Kelowna
Both my mom and I love your programming. Thanks so much for bringing something great and unique to
our television. Heather, Prince George I can’t believe how often it happens that I refer to something
I’ve watched during a program broadcast on Knowledge. Friends will say, “Where was that program playing?”
And over and over again I hear myself saying “I saw it on Knowledge.” Sharon, Vancouver To me,
Knowledge Network is worth more than a weekly trip to the movies, with programs on many subjects and
all in the comfort of my own armchair. My very best wishes to you for continuing success. June, Penticton
My thanks to you for bringing such wonders into my living room. Bertl, Pitt Meadows Thank you for
keeping us so well entertained throughout the years. Gordon, Kelowna Rare is the day that I don’t
find some amazing documentary on Knowledge Network… That we have access to these magnificent
programs showcasing the amazingly beautiful world in which we live is something to be treasured and
preserved. Ida, Kamloops
