THE BRAVE DEEDS
THE PRINCIPAL'S NEWSLETTER
APRIL 2010
CHRIS CHELIN, PRINCIPAL
chris.chelin@ksd.org
The 2009-2010 school year is flying by! In March we completed two of our most important building
goals with the Reading/Writing HSPE and our fourth year of Student Led Conferences.
The class of 2012 represented Kamiakin well in their HSPE testing. Our Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors
tested March 16 th -18 th for Reading and Writing. Students will continue testing when they take the
Math HSPE on April 13 th and the Science HSPE on April 15th.
To clear up some misconceptions about the Math HSPE, the legislature last year established that students
can earn a diploma if they pass the Reading and Writing HSPE but do not pass the Math assessment
for the classes of 2010-2012. In order to earn a diploma students must take the Math WASL AND
earn 2 Math credits after their sophomore year. These students will not earn a Certificate of Academic
Achievement. Members of the class of 2013 and beyond will have to pass the state math and science assessments
to be diploma eligible.
Students who transferred to Kamiakin from another state and have passed that state’s math test may receive
a waiver on the Math WASL but they will not be eligible to earn a CAA. All waivers are submitted
through the counseling office. If you have a question on your status for a waiver be sure to communicate
with your counselor before the test to ensure that all graduation requirements are met.
We encourage all sophomores, juniors and seniors who have not yet met standard to take the Math
HSPE on April 13 th . This will provide students with important information on their current math skills
as well as make them eligible for their Certificate of Academic Achievement if they pass.
In March, we had our fourth year of Student Led Conferences, and the results were just as outstanding
as prior years. Kamiakin staff appreciated the opportunity to meet with the parents and ensure that all
students have a plan for where they want to go after high school.
March also marked registration for the 2010-2011 school year. We are projecting for what our students
need, and staffing for these classes appropriately. One of our goals is that every student be aware of college,
eligible for college and prepared for college. The choices that students are making in classes
should align with these goals. Our students are exhibiting signs that they are smart educational consumers
by the choices that they are making. Student’s course requests are available for viewing via Parent-
Portal. If you see errors in the course requests, please contact your child’s counselor immediately.
Coming soon, we will be participating in Commencement exercises for the class of 2010. Graduation is
set for June 5 th and will be upon us before we know it! Senior parents, please take time to remind your
children how important it is that they finish strong. Colleges are increasingly holding admission pending
a student’s success in the classes that they are enrolled in their senior year.
Another Kamiakin DECA Virtual Business Team
Qualifies for International Competition
The Kamiakin DECA team, “Artistic Integrity” (Zach En’Wezoh and Nolan Earley), placed
second place in international competition to earn a berth in the Virtual Business Challenge at
the International DECA competition. These students have competed successfully in the
second of two challenges where the students have to make marketing decisions and upload
their scores to compete against others in the region and nation. Each challenge requires students
to manage a different aspect of a retail convenience store. During their challenge, students
managed purchasing, merchandising, and staffing for the store.
The next step will take place at the International DECA Career Development Conference in
Louisville, KY. This team will compete against the best DECA students from the other regions
of the country in a round robin format, they will be given a map of a city that they
have never seen before. They will then need to determine the best location for their company,
what kinds of advertising to do, what prices for their products would be, and even hiring
the best personnel available. In the “Virtual Business Challenge” category, all of the
work is done on computers, allowing the students to view the business climate of their city,
see potential employees who are seeking jobs, watch for special advertising opportunities,
and even see what their competitors are trying to do to beat them!
Congratulations and best of luck!
Career Center
Freshmen/Sophomores
Get involved in activities outside the classroom. Work toward leadership positions in the
activities that you like best. Become involved in community service and other volunteer
activities. (The people who read college applications aren’t just looking for grades.)
Check out careers you think you may be interested in. Use Career Cruising or come to
the career center for information.
Juniors
Start planning on making visits to colleges in which you are interested. Register for the SAT or ACT
exams and prepare before taking the test. Set up a filing system with individual folders for each college’s
correspondence and printed material. If you are planning on attending a military academy you
should apply for admission between April of your junior year in high school and January of your senior
year in high school. The earlier you apply the better.
Seniors
Review your Student Aid Report and make corrections, if necessary. Respond promptly to requests for
additional information from your college or scholarship organization.
Watch your mail box for college acceptance letters and financial aid offers.
Evaluate all financial aid offers carefully. Ask questions!
Consider grants, work-study and other aid you don't have to repay before accepting a student loan.
Decide on a college and send in all forms or deposits by the deadline (May 1 for most colleges).
Let your college know the financial aid awards you're accepting and declining.
Notify the colleges you were accepted to but won't be attending.
Keep checking the scholarship list and applying for those that apply to your career.
Check your school e-mail for updates as well.
Undecided Seniors…where are YOU going? Need some help? Here are some choices…
Career/Technical colleges: You can earn a certificate, degree, or diploma from a career college or
technical school that will train you for a specific career, trade, or profession. This will take 1-2 years of
college and then you’re off to work! These schools train students for a variety of technical positions, including
automotive technician, computer technician, hairstylist, medical assistant, engineering technology,
fire science and many other fields.
Community Colleges: Community colleges are two year post-secondary institutions that offer certificate
programs, Associate of Arts degrees, Associate of Sciences degrees, plus many other programs.
For both of the above go to Career Cruising to find a school that would apply to your interest.
Military: U.S. Armed Forces are made up of the six armed service branches: Air Force, Army, Navy,
Marines, Coast Guard, & National Guard. There are hundreds of careers in the military you can pursue
while earning a degree and serving your country. Check with the local recruiter or on the KAHS career
center web site for more information.
On –the-Job & Apprenticeships: Apprenticeships are a combination of on-the-job training and related
classroom instruction in which workers learn the practical and theoretical aspects of a highly skilled occupation.
Apprenticeship programs are sponsored by joint employer and labor groups, individual employers,
and/or employer associations. These are paid positions. Link to Career Cruising to find information
that would apply to your career interest.
