The CASA Project
(Court Appointed Special Advocates for Children)
Each year, over 750 children in Worcester County seek protection
from the juvenile court because of abuse and neglect. Can you spare
a couple of hours per week to help? The CASA Project needs you! In
2008, CASA volunteers assisted over 300 children in the Worcester
County Juvenile Court to find safe, permanent homes as quickly as
possible.
CASA provides all the training you need to participate in this unique
volunteer activity. Your role is to work for one child or sibling group at
a time. You find and report information to the juvenile court, with guidance
from CASA experts. Your hours on a case are flexible, and we
have two volunteer training classes coming up in the Spring.
Abused and neglected children in the juvenile justice system deserve
a consistent advocate focused on their best interests. Judge Luis G.
Perez of the Worcester County Juvenile Court, says, “I sleep better at
night knowing that a CASA is on the case. I wish we had a CASA on
every case.”
To find our more about CASA or how you can help,
According to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Reverse Mortgages are becoming
very popular in America. HUD’s Reverse Mortgage is a federally-insured private loan, and it’s a safe plan that can
give older Americans greater financial security. Many seniors use it to supplement Social Security, meet unexpected
medical expenses, make home improvements, and more. If you’re 62 years of age or older and have equity in
your home, a reverse mortgage can turn that equity into monthly income for life, a lump sum of cash, a line of credit
or a combination thereof. Unlike a traditional mortgage, there are no monthly payments, the proceeds are tax free
and do no affect Social Security or Medicare. There are no income or credit qualifications and you retain title to your
home. The desire to “Age in Place” - to remain in one’s home for as long as possible - is a personal goal consistently
expressed by older Americans. This 90-minute workshop will cover the truths and misconceptions of reverse mortgages
and help you determine if a reverse mortgage is right for you. The questions below and more will be
answered:
• What is a reverse mortgage and how does it work?
• How much money can I get from my home?
• Does the bank own my home?
• I’m having trouble making my mortgage payment; can a reverse mortgage help me?
• Can the bank take my home away if I outlive the loan?
• Will I have an estate that I can leave to my heirs?
When the Conficker virus was first identified in early 2009 it was learned that 30% of all home and office computers
using MicroSoft operating systems could be infected simply because the owners had not enabled automatic updates
to their system. Not sure what an Operating system is? Unsure if you enabled the automatic update? This course is
for you. If you own a computer, or use one in an office, and are puzzled by the phrase, automatic updates, you
should take this class. Managing your computer is not unlike learning what steps you need to take to keep your car
running. Did you learn how to put air in your tires, check the oil and other fluid levels? Most of us did this. Now
you can go take a simple course that can guide you through the process of learning what ordinary things you need
to know to keep your computer secure. This hands-on course will be led by Neil Spellman, a Network Security
Analyst at WPI, who has been teaching people how to effect security practices in their lives. The instruction is aimed
at people who use their computers regularly but have only a small degree of knowledge what software they own
and how it can be used to keep their personal information secure. You could spend $100 or $200 or you can learn
how to manage, configure and secure it yourself. (If you have a laptop computer, please bring it with you. If you
don’t have a laptop, please call the Night Life office one week before the class so we can arrange to have one available
for your use.) The class will be held in the WPI Campus Center, Chairman’s Room.
PERSONAL COMPUTER LITERACY - PART 1 (Introduction to the Personal Computer)
6:30-9:30 p.m.
Worcester Resident $200.00
Non-Worcester Resident $215.00
This course is a mix of lecture, exploration, and “hands on” exercise for the complete novice (we start with locating the
“On/Off” button). You will learn what all those intimidating techie terms are all about so you can feel at home in front
of your computer’s monitor - that’s the screen. (See what I mean?). No prior computer knowledge or experience is
necessary; however students will be better off if they:
1. are armed with a basic knowledge of the keyboard layout (as opposed to actual typing skill), and
2. have, or have regular access to, a personal computer to practice classroom lessons.
The course material includes the following subject areas:
• Hardware - the various boxes, buttons, cables/wires and connections that define the personal computer, and what
part they play in the operation of this marvelous machine
• MicroSoft Windows - the essential piece of software, the Operating System (O/S), which is akin to a traffic cop,
enabling the hardware parts to “talk” to each other and manage the other pieces of software such that they operate
without getting in each other’s way.
• Windows Explorer - the manager of the Operating System that enables you to maintain a well organized system for
saving and finding (and much more) the various documents (files) that you create (or download to) your computer’s
storage version of a basic file cabinet.
• The Internet (aka WWW, the World Wide Web) - the “Browser” software (i.e. Internet Explorer) you use to navigate
the information and entertainment world that resides outside of your computer with the help of your ISP (Internet
Service Provider).
• E-mail - the wonderful new way to “stay in touch” around the world within seconds, how to use it safely and avoid
the dangers you may be exposed to, sending attachments, and more.
This course is the first of a 2-part Computer Literacy sequence. There is a $10 cash materials fee due on the first night
of class. Part 2 starts at the conclusion of this course and picks up where this one leaves off.
If you’re using your computer for e-mail and surfing the net, and you’re in “fat city,” then this course is not for you. If,
on the other hand, you understand that e-mail and web surfing, as wonderful tech-tools as they are, are not skills that
make you “computer literate,” then you’ve come to the right place This course is the second of a 2-part Computer
Literacy sequence, and picks up where Part 1 ended. Students who have completed Part 1, or who have attained an
equivalent level of literacy/knowledge elsewhere, will be prepared for this course. This course covers the basics of the
three primary software products that comprise Microsoft Office - MS Word, MS Excel, and MS PowerPoint. In:
• MicroSoft Word, you will learn how to create, edit and print documents. We’ll start by providing you with a simple
document to replicate, then learn to use many of the vast arrays of editing and formatting tools to re-shape it into a
dramatically different document. You’ll see how we take a plain “vanilla” document filled with typos, spelling errors
and worse, and easily correct and turn it into a spell-perfect, impressive looking business letter, event flyer, stationery
letterhead, employment résumé, or creative multi-column newsletter with graphic images.
• MicroSoft Excel, you will discover the wonderful versatility of this spreadsheet tool, from simple list management
with sorting and filtering, to various business management documents, including the use of formulas (and even a
basic function or two) that can turn mere numbers into sophisticated what-if scenarios to help with important decision-making,
and more.
• MicroSoft PowerPoint, you will learn how to create impressive slide presentations with motion and sound effects. You
will see how you can parlay the skills you learned in the other MS Office software tools to come up to speed quickly
22
with PowerPoint. In the last class, we will put much of these newly learned skills to use in a fun project creating a
computer-based slide show that you will present to the class and then take home with you.
You will also see how these three independently-powerful pieces of software can be used in various combinations to
augment the final product proving that the “whole is greater than the sum of its parts.” Note: There is a $10 cash
materials fee due on the first night of class.
The advantages of learning an African language this New Year are just overwhelming! For its rich culture and
friendliness of the people, coupled with other economic, educational and social reasons, you may want to consider
joining this introductory Twi learning course. The class promises to be fun and eye-opening to know Africans better
in their music, dance and other cultural practices. Expect to greet and be able to converse with friends and students
in basic Twi during and after the course. Several teaching and learning resources would be employed to ensure proficiency
and understanding of the course. Some of the topics to be covered include greetings, simple
questions/requests and responses, counting, names of people and reasons behind and days of the week, and some
cultural practices. Twi is spoken by several thousands of immigrants in Worcester County and other parts of the
Commonwealth. In other states and Canada, you would encounter Ghanaians and engage them in an exciting conversation
to the surprise and envy of your friends and colleagues. In addition to English, Twi is spoken and understood
by about sixty percent of the twenty-two million Ghanaians in Ghana, and could be safely referred to as the
emerging lingua franca of the country. Learning Twi would open you up to life-long friendship and untapped
business opportunities beyond the borders of the country. Take advantage of this new Twi language class and
enhance your life in 2010.
“strong muscles enhance weight control and help to prevent or control osteoporosis and Type 2 Diabetes.” Be strong.
group classes. At the same time, dancers and long-time exercisers thoroughly enjoy the pace — exercising in a
healthy, fun, party-like environment. Finally, it’s fun, it’s different, it’s easy and it’s effective. Bring your sneakers,
wear your athletic clothes and prepare to sweat the best dance party around! Note: Non-tread dance shoes/sneakers
are best, but not required. We can talk about this at the first meeting! Register early, class size limited to 25.
This course is for people who want to write dynamic, effective letters (personal or business) that really get results.
As consumers living in a world where customer service is doing a disappearing act, we have at one time or another
had problems with faulty products, service or workmanship. Students will learn how to set the right tone, build
paragraphs, and use the active voice to achieve positive results. Most people believe that if a person takes the time
to actually sit down, write a letter, and then mail it, a real problem needs to be addressed and hopefully resolved.
Some work will be done in class, other letters will be written at home. Students will be expected to bring any
receipts, proofs of purchase, contracts, or letters they have retained and sent to merchants; or be willing to talk about
an experience they have had, and whether the incident is still unresolved. Knowing how to gather receipts, photos,
dates and other evidence is critical to getting results. Locating the right contact person and corporate address is also
important. Should you write or call? Students will also learn when to call, write, or send an e-mail. Basic personal
computer knowledge (in Word) is required.
• Have you been told that you are Pre-Diabetic?
• Are you having problems controlling your numbers?
• Do you truly want to become healthy and achieve control?
If you answered yes to any of the above then this 6-week valuable class is for you because it is geared towards type
II and pre-diabetics. If you are type II diabetic or have been diagnosed as pre-diabetic and want to get rid of the
extra weight and connect with what’s really going on within you, then this interactive class will be of great benefit
to you! Here you will learn about acceptance and how to have a better outlook with diabetes and learn how to balance
your body, mind, and spirit through hypnosis. You will learn how to take control of your weight. You will learn
how to do self-hypnosis and learn about your calm button. You will learn to connect with your emotions as we go
through the ups and downs of diabetes. You will learn about other conditions associated with diabetes and how
they can affect your life. You will learn how to teach others about what you are now living with and how to get on
track with exercise. We will go over how anyone can live on a diabetic eating program. And most important you
will learn about how important you are. Type II Diabetes is not a death sentence and it’s not a disease. Most type II
diabetes is known as a preventable condition and if you have pre-diabetes, all of the above is very valuable to you
because you still have a choice. In each class there will be a guided hypnosis session and there will be a handout kit
with CDs at the beginning of this class. Even though we know that hypnosis is a highly effective tool that can
change and alter lifelong patterns and it was approved by the AMA in 1958 for use in medicine and dentistry and
has helped many people improve their lives and their well-being. Hypnosis is not meant to, nor could it ever
replace, standard medical treatment. In fact, hypnosis is most effective when used in conjunction with traditional
health care. Geraldine is a Certified Hypnotist through the National Guild of Hypnotism. She runs a self-healing
practice in Worcester that teaches people how to re-connect with the body, mind and soul through hypnosis, meditation
and coaching sessions. She is also a Certified Motivational Coach for Diabetes, Weight Loss and Life. To find
very useful information on physical strengths and weaknesses that can be enhanced using a pitch pipe. Registration
In the United States, 80% of all public drinking water systems serve 500 or fewer people and are classified as “Very
Small Systems.” Certified water operators are required by most public water systems in the country, from complex
municipal drinking water supplies to restaurants and mobile home parks with their own water sources and distribution
for people seeking a profession with a wide range of responsibilities related to the delivery of safe drinking water.
This 18-hour course will prepare students to sit for the Massachusetts Drinking Water Operator VSS exam. Scores
of at least 70 on the exam will allow students to qualify for an operator-in-training license, the first step toward
receiving a full license. Course material will introduce students to the water supply field and the responsibilities of
certified drinking water operators. Topics covered will include water quality sampling, wells and source protection,
water distribution (pipes, storage tanks, hydrants, valves, meters), safety, water treatment, reporting, and drinking
water regulations. Students will learn to use basic math formulas for calculating water storage, pressure, flow, and
water usage. Three optional day-time field trips will also be scheduled to give students more exposure to water
operations and potential career opportunities. Coordinated by the Massachusetts Department of Environmental
Protection (MassDEP) and the Massachusetts Coalition for Small Systems Assistance, this course will be taught by
