Introduction

The Professional Certificate / Professional Diploma Programmes in Cardiothoracic Nursing are designed to provide students

with the essential knowledge and skills to practise cardiothoracic nursing; to create a learning environment for nuturing nurse

competency to provide high quality patient care; and to instill the confidence and skills needed to take up extended roles and

responsibilities in the cardiothoracic surgical unit.

Expected Learning Outcomes

Upon completion, students will be able to:

1. Apply knowledge in cardiac and thoracic surgical nursing to tailor optimum care for cardiothoracic patients;

2. Appreciate the range and types of cardiothoracic surgical procedures and related specialized nursing requirements;

3. Implement quality holistic nursing care for cardiothoracic patients at different stages of the perioperative period; and

4. Demonstrate active role in multi-disciplinary care for cardiothoracic patients.

The Professional Diploma Programme will have the following additional learning outcomes:

1. Justify and evaluate appropriate perioperative nursing care and intraoperative nursing care for cardiothoracic patients;

2. Construct a care plan for cardiothoracic patient with different types of cardiothoracic surgeries; and

3. Demonstrate competence in the advanced roles and responsibility of cardiothoracic nursing.

Programme

Modules

Professional Diploma Programme

Professional Certificate

Programme

I. Fundamental Thoracic Surgical Nursing

• Contact hours: 42 hours

• Seven whole lecture days on every Friday

II. Fundamental Cardiac Surgical Nursing

• Contact hours: 42 hours

• Seven whole lecture days on every Friday

III. Advanced cardiothoracic nursing

• Contact hours: 36 hours

• Seven whole lecture days on every Friday

IV. Practicum

• Contact hours: 264 hours

• 2 weeks continuous practicum (5 days / week) and

1 day per week for 20 weeks

* Some lectures are combined classes with other nursing programmes.

All lectures will normally take place in Prince of Wales Hospital.

Practicum will be in Prince of Wales Hospital or Queen Elizabeth Hospital.


Professional Certificate Professional Diploma Programmes in Cardiothoracic Nursing


Duration

Professional Certificate Programme: around 6 months

Professional Diploma Programme: around 1 year

Programme Requirements

Students have to achieve at least a passing mark of 50 in EVERY assessment which may be

written examination, group project, case study, presentation and log book completion. In

addition, students should attain at least 80% attendance for EACH module including lectures

and practicum.

Award

Upon successful completion of the programme, students will be awarded the Professional

Certificate or Professional Diploma in Cardiothoracic Nursing.

Admission Requirements

Professional Certificate Programme

1. Registered Nurse who has registered with the Nursing Board of Hong Kong or Enrolled

Nurse who has enrolled with the Nursing Board of Hong Kong; and

2. has at least 2 years clinical experience, preferably in surgical ward, intensive care unit or

critical care unit.

Professional Diploma Programme

1. Registered Nurse who has registered with the Nursing Board of Hong Kong; and

2. possesses a bachelor degree; and

3. has at least 3 years clinical experience, preferably in surgical ward, intensive care unit or

critical care unit

N.B.: If graduate of the Professional Certificate Programme wishes to convert to the Professional

Diploma Programme, he/she needs to complete that course within the following two years, and he/she

must fulfill the admission requirements of Professional Diploma Programme. Difference in tuition fee

will be charged and the amount varies according to the enrolment of course.

Medium of Instruction

Both English and Cantonese will be used as medium of instruction. All assessments will be

conducted in English.
