welcome

and news

Welcome to Imperial War Museum

North, a museum about people and

their stories, about how lives have

been and still are shaped by war and

conflict.

This May (and until January 2010), we

offer you an exciting opportunity to

discover Captured: The Extraordinary

Life of Prisoners of War. With real-life

stories and hands-on displays, there’s

plenty for all the family (see page 05).

Front Cover IMAGE: THE SNAKE

Items made of beads by prisoners of war were popular souvenirs

with soldiers. The snake, made from glass beads by Turkish POWs

in 1918-19, can be seen on display in Silo 1: Experience of War in

the Main Exhibition Space. There were over 500 Turkish and German

POW camps in Britain by the end of the First World War.

In July, we open our first outdoor

display, showcasing Alastair Thain’s

intriguing large scale photographic

portraits of British Marines (see

page 08).

We come together in August to mark

the 70th anniversary of the outbreak

of the Second World War through

song, tours and talks (see page 11).

CAPTURED:

THE EXTRAORDINARY

LIFE OF PRISONERS

OF WAR

MAJOR EXHIBITION

Special Exhibitions Gallery

Saturday 23 May - Sunday 3 January 2010

Uncover the truth behind stories that

have since become legends such as

The Great Escape, Colditz and The

Bridge Over The River Kwai and find

out what everyday life was really like

as a prisoner of war. Discover the

qualities and endurance called upon to

survive in the often harsh conditions,

explored through the themes of

capture, food, welfare, work, recreation

and attempts at escape.

This is the first major exhibition

held by the Imperial War Museum to

examine the experiences of prisoners

of war during the Second World War.

Captured will reveal the personal

stories of men and women, service

and civilian, during periods of captivity

in Britain, Europe and the Far East.

05

Imperial War Museum

Hands-on displays throughout the

exhibition will allow children and

adults alike to discover the realities

of camp rules and regulations, crawl

through an escape tunnel, try on

disguises and send and listen to secret

messages. Collect your own POW

“identity card” on arrival and discover

the stories of six real-life prisoners as

you explore the exhibition.

From the first

moment of captivity

there began in every

prisoners mind a

conflict which lasted

often until the day

of liberation. Should

he, or should he not,

try to escape?

The WaterWay

Until Sunday 6 September

Every day since October 2006

Ghislaine Howard has produced

paintings inspired by news images

featured in The Guardian newspaper

as it arrives through her door.

365 represents a year’s worth of daily

paintings and questions whether we

are over exposed to images of conflict,

and if the way images are produced

and published changes our way of

looking at them.

Throughout the duration of the display

Ghislaine will add paintings of the

daily images she continues to be

inspired by.

ALASTAIR THAIN

Alastair Thain will be at Imperial

War Museum North on Saturday 19

September to talk about his work, visit

www.iwm.org.uk/north nearer the time

for more details.

Exhibitions

and displays

External Spaces

Saturday 18 July - Sunday 18 October

Thain’s intriguing photographic

portraits depict the anguish and

emotions of unknown British Marines,

taken seconds after a gruelling

training exercise at a Commando

Training Centre.

The large scale portraits, reaching

over 5 metres in height, show detail

beyond what the eye can usually see.

This creates an incredible intimacy

between the viewer and the subject.

These portraits were created using

the same format camera as NASA

used to photograph the Earth from

the space shuttle.

This display will be the first in the

Reactions series at Imperial War

Museum North exhibiting the work

of artists in and around the museum.

Exhibition frames kindly donated by Land Rover

My aim was to

make the viewer

think about the

nature of conflict,

mortality, and the

preciousness of

these young lives.
